What is the sign of an External Drive Gone Bad?

I tried to copy a folder from my external LaCie backup drive to my Mac. The copy operation stalled about halfway through. After 10 minutes a 40 MB folder was still not copied. So I clicked the Stop button in the copy dialogue, and then I got the spinning beachball. One by one, I got the spinning beachball on every program I was working in ... first the Finder, then the menu bar, then my Web browser, and even the Dock. I couldn't even force quit anything. I finally had to do a hard restart of my eMac.
After restarting, I tried to run Disk Utility on the external drive partition that had stalled out. Repair Permissions went OK, but when I tried Repair Disk, I got the message in the Disk Utility window: "Operation stopped because of error" and the dialog box:
"Unmount failed
The disk "Backup drive" fail to unmount because it is in use. The operation has been cancelled. "
Is this a sure sign that the external hard drive is failing? If not, what is? Can I rule out a software or formatting problem?

The "external database" is one of the primary components of a Rapid Mart.
Actually it's a data mart model - which must be created on a database.
A Rapid mart will also include one or more Data Integrator jobs to load the data mart.   And one or more universes and sample reports to query the data mart.

  • External drive gone bad...how to mount it?

Power went out last night. When I got up this morning, one of my Lacie 160 GB FW (800) drives was making a horrible clicking/beeping noise. I shut everything down and booted back up. Error message said disk(the external drive) needed to be initialized. It won't mount so I can't run Disk Utility or Disk Warrior on it.
How can I get it to mount?
    thanks...Nancy

You may need a replacement drive case. Even more important, a UPS to protect you better for outages.

I am not sure, but I can warn you not to buy the Rosewill enclosure with the Oxford 922 Chip...
    http://www.rosewill.com/product/product.aspx?productId=81
That is what I have with a Seagate 160GB, 8MB Cache, 7200RPM, Ultra-IDE hard drive. It's fast, but it has A.D.D. It will fall asleep, even after playing with the hard drive sleep times... Also, it has a slow response time in Logic... I click record, and it takes 3-5 seconds for it to start recording. I get the spinning beach ball of death for that 3-5 seconds... shrugs
    My friend bought this drive...

And it works perfectly on my computer. No crappy A.D.D... Hope that helps.

*Note a few of my best friends have A.D.D. and I hope no one takes offense to that reference... it just seemed VERY fitting in my situation.

  • Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation it gives me an input/output error and stops. Any tips?

Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

    ibodnano:
You will find internal optical drivers from OWC here. You will find external DVD burners from OWC here.
For the external drives, almost any Firewire burner will be supported by your PowerBook. Here are a few. You can further refine the filters.
    Good luck.

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:

That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

Hi, likely the easiest is to just poll the drive & get something like this...
    Get MacScan...

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/
But if you have a good external drive already, just clone it.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

  • What is the largest and fastest Hard Drive I can install in a 17" I-7 Mac Book Pro running Final Cut Pro7 7

What is the Largest and Fastest Hard drive that can be installed in my 17" Mac Book Pro i7 duo core 2.8 I need it to be compatible with Final Cut Pro 7

    One of these SSDs:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDMX6G480/
An SSD is always a faster storage solution. A regular hard drive will almost ALWAYS be the bottleneck in a system, because it's the only part in a computer that has physical, moving parts. The SSD has no moving parts, so there's much less latency when reading and writing. That particular SSD is designed with professionals in mind, meaning that it will right at home rendering video in Final Cut. Hope that helps!

  • Is there a way to install the server on an external drive connected to an airport extreme?

Is there a way to install the server on an external drive connected to an airport extreme?

If you want a small (comparatively) cheap server along the lines of the AirPort Extreme the nearest thing is a Mac mini.
You can use the AirPort Extreme as a very basic file server, and (unofficially) a Time Machine server. A Time Capsule has a built-in hard disk and officially supports being a Time Machine server.

    Orientation lock.  From http://www.apple.com/iphone/tips/
    Lock the screen orientation.
Double-click the Home button to bring up the multitasking interface, then swipe from left to right. Now tap the portrait orientation lock once to turn it on and again to turn it off.

new user...how do you drag or move or copy a file or folder from the desktop to an external drive?  I have tried dragging and copy/pasting.

My guess the problem you are running into is the drive is formatted for a PC as NTFS. OS X can read files from NTFS however it cannot write to it. Check the formatting on the drive, if it's NTFS then it should be reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), you can use Disk Utility to do this.
If you still have a PC and want to share the EHD with the PC and Mac please read MacWorld's Share an external drive between a Mac and a PC article.

what are the Processor, Operating system, hard drive device, Total Memory, Network card, System Graphics of the Silver ipad air?

"Memory" in this case means RAM, the working space for the processor in the iPad. It is different from storage space, the latter being what is referred to by the "32GB", "64GB" etc. specification.
