What is the yellow section in the storage info?

Half of my storage is filled up with yellow "other", what is that? And how can i get that space?

You do not necessarily want in light of the fact that many of the files in the OTHER  category are essential:

If you wish to delete or transfer data to an external HDD, I suggest that you download OmniDiskSweeper (free) from the Internet and open it.  It will show all of your files and the respective sizes.

  • I moved my entire iPhoto Library to an external hard drive, which seems to have worked. But now my Mac Pro shows a backup of the same size in the storage info and has not freed up any space. help!

I moved my entire Iphoto Library from my Macbook Pro to an external hard drive. (Prior to this, I also copied the entire library to a different ehd, plus I have 2 other ehdrives with backups). I was trying to get more space on my hd. It has a capacity of 500GB, but was down to 70GB usable, with about 300GB used up by photos. I moved the library by going to Finder, using Command+Drag+Drop onto the new Seagate ext hard drive icon. The move seems to have worked, as the library shows up on the ehd, plus will open from there. My problem is that now my Macbook Pro shows that I STILL have only 70GB available out of the 500, and that 300GB is used up by "Backups", which it did not indicate before.
I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
Thanks for any and all help!

You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • What is the storage allowance for CC/Photography Plan?

    Hi,
I signed up for the Creative Cloud/Photography deal last week. I'm really pleased with it generally, so far.
Adobe don't make it terribly clear what the storage allowance is with this plan. To be honest I was sure I had seen 20gb mentioned 'somewhere' so I was a little surprised when it turned out to be 2gb. I queried this with Adobe through the web chat support facility. One Adobe help person said they would get back to me and didn't. When I tried again a few days later I was told that the storage allowance was 2gb.
I can't find the specification of what storage allocation is provided with this plan anywhere. Does anyone know anything about this? Have you come across a description of what is provided anywhere? Obviously its not a deal breaker - its a great plan for me - and there are plenty of other storage options online and offline. I'm just curious as to why I was expecting it to be 20gb when it was 2gb.
    Thanks
    Mark

With the plan going from a limited time special offer to permanent,
new users get 2 gb, older users are grandfathered in at 20 gb.

    Dear All,
I stored many large XML documents in 9i XML TYPE, now I want to using extract() function to XPath search the stored document.

    How can I solve it??
Beside, I try to search some smaller XML documents, I can get the XML data using extract() in SELECT clause, but I still have ORA-19011 error if I using extract() in WHERE clause.

By default in Firefox 4, a site can use up to 50MB of IndexedDB storage. If it tries to use more than 50MB, Firefox will ask the user for permission:

  • What are the storage limits for LR Mobile Sync?

I'm trying to find a definitive answer on whether there are limits to the amount of data that can be synced to Lightroom Mobile. I know my CC subscription gets me 20GB but I have also heard suggestions that LR Mobile sync data is outside of that.
I have a 128GB iPad, so it wouldn't be terribly hard for me to blow a 20GB limit.
    Thanks,
    Fraser

Fraser, Mobile only has lossy Smart Previews and camera roll files so you can have plenty of files on your iPad from Lightroom. They are outside the 20GB of CC AFAIK.

I off loaded IPhoto pictures, deleted them from my Macbook Air and trash bin. The storage info under about this Mac still shows 47GB of photos, why? Where are they if I can't locate them. Thanks

The storage yellow bar is pretty full.  How can I lower this storage part in my computer.

  • What is the yellow "other" in storage

I've deleted my iPhotos Trash, my Computer Trash and all items in my downloads folder.  What else could make up the yellow "other" in storage?

If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Ipod touch 4th gen - what is the yellow bar know as "other" in storage on itunes?

ipod touch 4th gen - what is the yellow bar known as "other" in storage on itunes?  It is using all the space and not allowing me to download anything else.  Is there a way of getting rid of it?

It includes arwor, mail. messages and some app date. Basically, what is not icluded in the other categories. If over about 1 1/2 GB that usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • What is the yellow, "other" category which is taking up 1.90gb of space?

    Hi there,
    I have a 6g nano, 16gb.
In iTunes I can see that out of the 14.98gb capacity, 12.4gb is audio, 0.75gb is free, and 1.90gb is "other". It shows up as yellow in the bar down the bottom in the capacity window.
My question is: what does "other" consist of?
I don't sync any photos, I don't sync any iTunes U. I don't have "enable disk use" checked, and I never have.
Anything I try to transfer off the ipod (eg podcasts, music, even audio books) decreases the audio content, but not the "other". So, what IS taking up 1.90gb of space on my nano?

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • How do I get my i4 to show in the USB device section instead of storage device when trying 2 sync?

I am trying to sync with iphone 4. I think I have found the problem. I can get my iPad to sync with my Vista computer just fine. My iPhone won't. It is showing up in under my device section under "storage devices" and not under "USB" like my iPad is. Do you think that could be the problem why my iTunes is not recognizing it the proper way?  If so, what is the fix?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes a dozen times. taken down the windows and my additional firewall, spyware, and antivirus software. I am in need of additional suggestions. I just don't know how to get my computer recognize my phone as a USB, or give it a different driver letter. Your assistance is appreciated.
