What is this "autoupdate" in my dock?

hi, I just noticed this icon in my dock and was unsure of what it is and what its doing.
It is named "autoupdate" and the drop down menu, next to the apple icon, has no items.
Also, over the last few weeks a popup has been appearing from time to time. The popup is "autoupdate" asking for a password to make changes to the computer. As I'm not sure which program it belongs to I have just canceled the password requests so far.
Does anyone know what this is and what I should do?
BTW, I'm running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Thanks, Daniel

I don't recognise that icon, it is not the icon for AutoUpdate from Microsoft Office 2008 or 2011 for example.
You could try right-clicking on the icon in the dock and selecting 'Show in Finder' from the resulting menu. The name/location of that folder might give clues as to what application this AutoUpdater is for.

Also experiencing some funky issues with my wireless keyboard. With new batteries, it will just stop functioning. Certain keys intermittently won't work. Also the fans go on as soon as I turn the computer on - some times they stay on and sometimes they don't. Ever since upgrading the operating system - I've been having many issues with this iMac. Not happy. Any answers out there?

Thanks for your reply LexSchellings, There is no disc in the drive and I went through the suggestions you put forward on the phone with Apple support without any luck. I can put a disc in but it pops straight back out again without registering on finder.
The idea of using an external drive was to enable me to avoid the cost and loss of productivity whilst machine in repair... if I have to take it in to get the old drive removed than I might as well have a new internal drive put in, although I do worry about the reliability of these apple drives given my experience with this one coupled with my limited online research ... on line forums seem to be full of people with the same problem (although perhaps searching such forums is bound to make it seem a common problem as users with perfectly working machines are less likely to post (?)) Your reply suggests that no external drive will work whilst the existing drive is in place.
As a postscript: I do realise that this is a user forum ...my secondary question was asking if anyone knows how to put forward a case/complaint to Apple... I can't find a link on the support page that would enable me to do so and I was wondering if anyone on this user forum had any ideas/experience..

It's strange. The problem apparently resolved itself after I ran TechTool on it. When I clicked on Firefox last night, I had no problem opening a window. Thanks for your help. (As to your previous post, the focus was on Firefox and neither the speed keys nor the menu bar would open a window or tab of allow me to enter a URL to open a window. Strange!)

    Thanks for any help.

The icon in the dock is a shortcut to the app itself.....for some reason the icon has lost contact with the app.......go to your Applications folder and drag Picasa back to the dock....a new alias (shortcut) will be created.....

  • Launching Photoshop CC from dock asks for serial number [was:what is this?]

What is this? I just want to use photoshop on my laptop using the same license I use for my desktop. Please help

    Hi.
    photoshop CC
    Laptop = OSX 10.8.5
    Desktop = OSX 10.8.5
Launching photoshop from dock. It asks for serial number. I enter serial number copied directly form my account with adobe.
Error says "This serial number is not valid for Adobe Photoshop CC."
I'm confused as to why Photoshop worked before on my laptop but now it does not. Did something expire? Do I need a separate serial number for a different computer (ie. my laptop). I don't understand.
    Thanks.

  • What is TERMINAL and BASH ? and why this shows in my Dock ?

What is TERMINAL and BASH ? and why this shows in my Dock ?

    "What is Terminal and Bash?"
Terminal is an application allowing access to the Mac's UNIX-based sub-system. If you like another operating system ticking away beneath OS X's shiny GUI. BASH (Bourne Again Shell) is one of many command line interpreters for that sub-system.
". . . why does this show in my Dock"
Either because you put it there or you launched the application.

  • What does this message mean Charging is not supported with this device?

What does this message mean Charging is not supported with this device?

You've gotten 2 good answers already, but there's a key assumption in both that you got the message when connecting the iPhone to some other device. If this is the case you can get an adapter in the Apple online store that will allow charging from older devices.
If, however, this message appears when you are not connected to anything the problem is dirt or moisture in the dock connector at the bottom of the phone. Clean it with a dry toothbrush or air blast.

  • What's this 'Zoom' feature in Safari?

I was wondering what exactly do you do with this 'Zoom' feature in Safari 3.1.1. When I hit 'Zoom' the window just resizes. But I don't think anything gets zoomed in. So, what's this feature for? How to get this thing working?

    Hi,
Oddly enough, I just tried that, and all it did was to make the page bigger, but it also 'zoomed' in to your posting, in much the same way as clicking on the green button does. I suspect that it's tool that enables us to go to a particular part of a page (such as the postings in these forums) rather than have to scroll through them. I've also discovered, that to click on minimise sends the page to the dock, so you would do better to click on the green button to restore the page to a more workable size, or to the window size before you clicked on Zoom.

  • What's this in the box?

I have a lovely new iPod. Just one stupid question so far: What is this thing in the box? The little white thing, looks like it's some sort of protector for the dock port? What am I to do with this?
    Thanks in advance!
ibook g3 now cadidate MBP owner plus a new color ipod!   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thanks Jeff but I don't think that's it.
It's not like a plug for a hole, it's about 4" x 3/4" and has a long hole in the middle. Looks like the ipod is meant to sit inside of it and have the cord plugged in but the ipod cannot stand up or lie flat in it. Perhaps it's some sort of adaptor, clicks into something, maybe that the old thicker ipod sat in but it does not fit in the dock of the old ipod, the new one sits in there just fine.
I'm stumped as to what it could be that Apple thought we were all going to need it.

  • What is this extra peice

What is this extra peice that kind of looks like a dock and comes with every iPod? What is it, and how does it work? What product can you use it on?

It's a dock adapter for use with the Universal Dock.

  • I bought the iPhone 4s and my battery used to reach 32% and then the phone would shut off. Then it reached 46% and the same thing happens, and now it shuts off at 53%. And it start recharging from the percentage it shut off at. What does this mean?

    What does this mean?

My iphone 4s just developed a similar problem.  Ultimately, after a visit to the Genius Bar at which I was offered a replacement phone for $149, I took the phone to a non-Apple repair shop which diagnosed the problem as tarnished pins in the docking connector and replaced the connector for $49.
The symptoms I experienced were that the phone would not pull a charge.  I tried different cables, wall outlet versus computer USB connection, etc.  The screen stayed black until I depressed the sleep button, at which time the red battery / lightening bolt symbol would flash three times and then the screen would go black.
If your battery is dead, that icon will not show up at all.  If you get the icon, it means your battery is run down and needs to recharge, but the defective docking connector is preventing the battery from taking the charge.

  • What is this thing?

    Hello
I've just bought my Z1 and when unboxed, I wonder what is this little thingy is for. I've browsed through the quick guide and also user guide on Sony's website but fail to find a clue at all.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's for the charging dock DK-31 (the one in the plastic bag). You can change the spacer on the charging dock to a wider/bigger one to be able to dock the phone when you have it in a protective case.
