What is this software?
I get that it's a desktop environment but is there somewhere I can see screenshots or video of it? I'm wondering in which areas it's most limited in and where the major restrictions are.
Originally it was a complete Linux distro. Nowadays it only refers to the desktop part, and is only available for Solaris. It ships with Solaris 10 as an alternative to CDE, and a more recent version is available in Solaris Express (the developer preview of the next version of Solaris).
It's based on the GNOME desktop, so most things you read or watch about GNOME will also apply to JDS. JDS also includes a few commercial apps like StarOffice, RealPlayer, and Adobe's Acrobat Reader and Flash plugin.
If you have an x86 machine, a good introduction might be to download the Project Indiana Live CD from http://opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/. It's a free binary distro of OpenSolaris that includes most of JDS (but not all of it-- some apps have been removed so it fits on the CD, and some because they are non-free software). And since it's a Live CD, you obviously don't need to install anything to try it out.

I need to know what PostalSoft is used for. I am working with databases that have fields such as "PostalSoftState", "PostalSoftZipCode" etc.

DeeAs far as I know, there are no known security risks with it (at least no widely reported cases). I've used it for about three years, and have had no security problems with it. The UNIX programmer folks on here will have more specific technical information, but from a user standpoint it's perfectly safe to use. In fact, if you add other user accounts to your own computer, the other users can't even attempt to access it. It's pretty neat...

If you are unsure whether your computer needs a particular update, simply download and open the update installer. The installer will alert you if the firmware update is already installed or not needed."
and instead of a message telling me of the proper update
"This software is not supported on your system."
So, why would the manual updater not tell me I already have the proper SMC and EFI updates?
What is the reason I get the message that the software I downloaded from Apple Support is not supported on my system?

why were you trying to reïnstall the Boot ROM and SMC versions that were already installed on your MacBook Pro?
I agree that a “not supported” message is certainly less clear than an “already installed” message would have been. -

"This software is not supported on YOUR SYSTEM" seems to be a recurring theme in Apple Support site offerings for MacBook Pros and I suspect that Apple didn't really work this issue thoroughly enough to make their hardware updates viable.
You are not alone, Raigbow. Many MacBook Pro users are finding the Apple Support update packages are not doing what their support instructions indicate should be happening.
I believe this is a bigger issue of Apple not thinking of previously sold units as worthy of solid support. After the one year warranty, unless you buy more warranty - and I have - the half-hearted but very thorough documentation of non-working "fixes" shows they aren't all that concerned with your happiness as a user.... Only as a potential buyer of the next Apple showcase item.
After that, they will be on to the next big thing. Kind of like the Japanese model, in which old things are discarded.
But save your work, your data, as the only fix the manufacturer will offer is to wipe your drive and reinstall the original software.
Or use the iCloud to save everything you do and value, since the device you use to access it is short-term.. Don't get too attached to your MAC, because it is terminal in nature. -

The easiest and cheapest way is to use HandBrake to convert your DVDs to H.264 that FCP X can use.
Download Handbrake free here http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Put your DVD in the Mac, launch HandBrake and let it rip your DVD to H.264
You can then import the files into FCP X.
Professional editors will be apoplectic about me recommending HandBrake but for what you are doing the quality will be fine. -

You need to contact Canon - or read the software specs - it sounds like the software you got form them is not supported by your computer

Probably - if you are shooting JPEG - launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto preferences set action when a camera is connected to launch iPhoto and connect your camera - iPhoto should launch and you should be able to import
Some cameras need to be set to mass storage mode - read your camera manual for details and procedures
If you are using RAW then your camera needs to be on this list and you need the versions of software noted - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757 - for older OS versions you can use google to find the list of supported cameras
