It looks like a speaker almost. I put my ears next to the speakers in the back of my MB and they sound too tinny to make the "fuller" (I say that relatively) than what I hear. Thanks!

actually, i may have answered my own question. It appears to be a midrange-enhancing speaker...

can anyone confirm this?
neat. i never knew that! i was wondering why my speaker volume sounded ever-so-slightly off center to the right (that speaker is to the right of the fan)

Then when you updated/restored your phone it locked back up to the original carrier.
Only the carrier that the phone is locked to can unlock it.

  • What's this thing called?

I want to buy this "thing", but I've no idea what it's called! I've tried Googling any number of search terms, but no luck:)
It's basically similar to a surge protector, but it retains a few minutes charge, so in the event of a power cut your computer doesn't suddenly switch off, and you've got a few minutes to save your work and shut down properly. I've seen them, so I know they exist, but I just don't know what the proper name for them is.
    Anybody know?

  • What is this thing that came with my iMac?

I just got a new iMac (quad core, i5). There is a curious object in the packaging that I don't know what it is, and it isn't discussed in the instructions. It's a thin piece of black felt-like material, square shaped, with the 4 corners folded inward. I have no idea what this thing does, or what I should do with it. What is it? It's way too thin to be a mousepad, I think.

  • What is this thing?

    Hello
I've just bought my Z1 and when unboxed, I wonder what is this little thingy is for. I've browsed through the quick guide and also user guide on Sony's website but fail to find a clue at all.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's for the charging dock DK-31 (the one in the plastic bag). You can change the spacer on the charging dock to a wider/bigger one to be able to dock the phone when you have it in a protective case.

  • Can't locate a replacement part - what is this thing called exactly?

Well, my laptop started refusing to accept a charge, and so as the last remaining battery life died out I quick turned it off and handed it to my father in law to diagnose - he's good with computers and electronics. After a few days he narrowed the problem down to what resembles a dc-in board - it wouldn't carry electricity anymore.
Basically, I need to find a replacement for this part so I can start using my laptop again. I've scoured the internet using as many keywords as I can think of, but strangely can only find things that vaguely resemble what I need.
Can anybody help pinpoint what this board is, so I can find a replacement? Thank you so much.
Here is a link to a photo my husband took.

    Hello Marissa,
From my research, I have come to the conclusion that the part in the picture is called a "DC-In Board". I believe that this is what it is officially called, but I am not 100% positive. I gave it my best shot considering you didn't specify the exact PowerBook model in your post. I assume that this part differers from model to model. I will be able to be more exact when I know the exact model. I hope this helps and gets you a step closer to being up and running again.

  • What are this things in my document and how can I get rid oth them

    Hi,
I'm a happy recent switcher, I'm migrating my .doc documents to pages '08 but sometimes I'm getting weird vertical lines and triangles in the pages document.
What are they and how can I get rid of it, cause they get printed. There is no way to affect it using the mouse.
    Thank you

OK I found out by myself... it was the track changes thing.
    Thanks anyway

  • What is this thing?  how do I make it not useless?

    Greetings.
    OS 10.4.8
    macbook (et al)
I used to be able to simply type something in the finder window and it would return files that actually contained what I typed.
Now, now matter what I type, I end up with hundreds of completely unrelated items that aren't even close.
I could ask my 3 year old nephew and get as many useless, waste of time replies.
I've looked through the archives here and found many philisophical discussions of who said what, why designers make what choices, who likes what and why, etc.....
None of that helps me figure out (not that I was able to find - maybe the group search engine is also using spotlight!!!) how to actually find stuff that I need to locate NOW (like I used to be able to do), and NOT have to reset the window view to get rid of the groups, extra unneeded tool bars, etc......
Please help me regain my former efficiency.
    Much appreciated.
    ht

I'll give you a head start since I know you have a lot of reading from the last post...
When you type something into the search oval of a Finder window, it looks for that term in the metadata (filename, keywords, file type, supplementary data, etc) and content (for files seen as containing searchable text content).
This is what accounts for your seemingly unrelated hits.
You could narrow the search to look only at metadata, which in many-but not all-cases will effectively limit it to the name, by preceding the search term with "
For example to find files with the term house in the metadata, you would enter "house. Conversely, you could limit the search to content only by using ' . This works in both the Spotlight window at the top right of your screen (the magnifying glass) and in the Cmd-F window.
For more directed queries-like when you really only want to search for filename-you can use the criteria lines in the Cmd-F window (alone or in conjunction with a term in the search oval)
    EDIT:
It is possible to change the search defaults to Name:Contains in Cmd-F.
You do it by editing the default_smart.plist file:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/default_smart.plist
When you get to Finder.app, rt/cmd-click and choose Show Package Contents to gain access to the Contents folder.
In TextEdit (or the Property List Editor if you installed the Developer Tools package from the OSX DVD) add the following section within the <array> area:
    <dict>
    <key>FXSliceKind</key>
    <string>Snam</string>
    </dict>

  • Ssoooo... what's this thing good for anyway?

So I just bought my powerbook used. This is my first mac. I may have under researched this decision. i'm now finding all sorts of guff about the powerbook g4s being "too slow" and "outdated". did I just waste a bunch of money on and obsolete machine. or is it possible to upgrade the hardware enough to salvage it for a few years?

I think it depends on what you paid whether you wasted money or not, and what your intended use is. Certainly the Powerbook series and G4 PowerPC processor has not been used for many years now, and support for programs, security updates, and so on is waning.
Assuming the hardware is in good condition, the only logical upgrades for this machine is to max the RAM and install a larger hard drive (both depend on which Powerbook you have).
While I would not be happy trying to edit video or do extensive Photoshop work (too slow), I still use my PB as a secondary machine for light duty tasks such as email, web surfing (except web video -too slow), photo viewing, iTunes playback, word processing, and so on.
Computers get better. I don't think Pentium 3 machines satisfy many PC users anymore either.

  • What's this thing made of?

Hello again - I'm getting back into photography after about 35 years of letting life get in the way.  I've purchased an F1N on Ebay, and a murder (the correct term for the group) of FD lenses. I want to get an 85mm FD f/1.8 next.  While all of my other FD lenses have been very reasonable, the used 85s on Ebay are going tor $180+. What the hey??!!!  I mean I bought a 100mm for aroung $50; so why so much for the 85? THanx.  Michael

Do or don't do what? I don't understand.
OP has an F1N. He's gonna need FD/FL mount lenses to use on it. No adapters needed for that.
All I was attempting to do was clarify that there are Canon FD/FL lenses other than just the "big white" that are adaptable with Ed Mika's replacement bayonet mounts, that may be worth doing if wanting to use them on EF mount EOS cameras (film or digital). I know folks who have adapted 55/1.2 SSC and Aspherical, 14/2.8L, 85/1.2L, for example. Those ain't "white" but many people consider them worth adapting... and the Ed Mika replacement bayonet mounts are the best way to do that. At around $100 per lens, it's rather high priced. And in some cases with full frame/film cameras the adapted lenses will have some limitations due to mirror interference. So it's going to come down to personal decision whether or not to adapt. See Ed Mika's website for more info.
But... again... adapters aren't needed for what Michael is doing... Shooting film with an F1N, which requires FD/FL lenses anyway.
So I don't see where there are conflicting opinions, correct or incorrect answers, or where there will be anything to report back about.

  • What does this thing do??

Ok stupid question. what is that white piece of plastic that comes with your iPod. It looks like it connects to a dock or something... im stumped

That's practical, but not nearly as useful as using it to throw at your mother when she locks the car door with your school books inside; the bus is about to leave.
