What is this: Where is GrowlHelperApp

Hi,
just few weeks ago, this dialog appears sometime when I turn on/restart my macbook (it also happend ONCE to my wife's macbook). It is not every time, lets say once a week, so it's very strange.
I have OS X Mountain Lion and I've never had a Growl installed, so why is this appearing on my Mac? What can I do with it?

Well, appearently an application uses Growl to send notifications.
There are different applications running silently in the background of the MacOS X System, like the helper apps and certain support apps.
So the first step is to move to the System Preferences - Users and check the startup applications. Well, if there are some old remains or an application which uses growl to send notifications - we need to move to the preferences of the application and disable notifications in the application preferences. GeekerTool is a very well known applications, as well as dropbox is.
Both can work without growl - so we need to change the application preferences.
Also some old dashboard widgets might use growl as notification help. We need to check those also.
Check for old dashbard widgets by removing those, and check if the widow reappears... if not, we've found the widget - and can look if there is an update...
In my case it was an old alam clock dashboard widget - which sends out notifications. I removed it, and the window disappeared forever....
Hope this helps you

  • Where is GrowlHelperApp.app? box pops up and closes after a few seconds. I don't have Growl installed - what can I do?

Whenever I open my recently Mavericks booted mac, a pop up box appears asking me
    "Where is GrowlHelperApp.app?"
I have never used nor heard of Growl before.
I spent around an hour googling for a soultion, but the only ones I can find all relate to having Growl installed.
The worst part is that clicking "Cancel" immediately brings the box back up again, whilst moving it or just leaving the box open results in it closing itself after ~15 seconds just to re-open again.
    It's extremely frustrating.
Does anyone know what to do to get rid of this without having to buy Grow
    Cheers in advance!

    Thank you for your help!
I disabled them all one by one and it seems like it was the GeekTool Helper that was causing this..
Which is a shame because it added life to my desktop
You have yourself a good day Mr. Tony!

When my wife tries to update one of her apps a strange Apple ID pops up. Her Apple ID is correct in settings and in the apple store. What does this mean? Where did the other one come from?

There is something on your iPhone (a music file, iBook, document or video) that belongs to another Apple ID.  Only your wife would know how that file arrived there.  Your iPhone is asking for the correct Apple ID for all of the files that are resident on the iPhone.

  • What is this noise and where is it coming from?

MBP 13", just over two weeks old, and it's making this high-pitched static-y crackling/buzzing noise. It's fairly constant, although it cuts in and out slightly at times. Sounds a little like a very faint radio stuck between stations, but more metallic and at a higher pitch. What is this, and how do I get it to stop? It doesn't seem to be related to speakers or volume settings at all, and audio is working fine. It sounds like it's the machine itself.

Try running the Apple Hardware test first. If it is the fan, you should get an error code with "MOT" in it. If you do, you should probably plan to replace both fans.
Also, check out your hard drive with S.M.A.R.T. Utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. If you have the original hard drive, be aware that most hard drives have a useful life of 3-5 years, and yours is getting into this category. If you find you need to open up the Mac to replace a fan, it would be a good time to consider replacing the hard drive with a bigger and faster one. Especially if S.M.A.R.T. Utility shows errors, even if the drive is not yet failing.
If you need take apart instructions, you can find them here:

    Good luck!

  • "where is GrowlHelperApp?" box popping up

Hi, I am running itunes 8.0.2 on a macbook running 10.4.11 and all of sudden everytime i open itunes and frequently when I change songs a choose application menu pops up and says "where is GrowlHelperApp?" I do not have any file by that name on my computer nor have I ever had Growl (that i know of). If i select something else from the menu nothing happens and the box continues to pop up. This is very annoying and I was wondering if anyone knew of a solution for this.
    Thank you very much.

    https://www.dropbox.com/help/48
What is Growl? How does Dropbox use it?
From Growl's website: "Growl is a notification system for Mac OS X: It allows applications that support Growl to send you notifications." In other words, Growl lets Dropbox notify you of any Dropbox activity right on your desktop. If Dropbox detects Growl is installed on your Mac, it will use it to display all Dropbox notifications.
Growl notifications appear at the top right corner of the screen. A Growl notification will appear whenever new changes are made to the contents of your Dropbox, such as a newly added file or a change to a shared folder.
    Note from David:
Therefore, "growlhelperapp" is a support file of Growl, which is placed on your system if you use Dropbox — that is, if you have enabled the Dropbox App.

The loading bar at the bottom of my Firefox browser has suddenly disappeared and I want to reinstall or reactivate it. How do I do this please and what is this bar called? I use the latest version of Firefox 3.6.3 and Windows XP. I have many add ons and I usually automatically install the recommended updates. This problem has never happened before and switching my browser on and off again does not solve the issue.

I have a Windows 7 laptop using I tunes 64 and all my music files are
on an external disc. I rarely use I tunes and at one point moved all my files
(including the music files) from one external disc to another without
considering what affect this would have on the I tunes library. When I eventually
attempted to use I tunes, every selected a song from the library resulted in a
message stating that the file couldn't be located. After following some of the procedures
explained in this community I was able to reconnect the library back to where
the associated music files are presently stored. However, there are still 2
problems that need to be corrected. 1) Every song file now has a duplicate. One
file works and the other file will result in the same message stating that the
file couldn't be located. Before there were 4,000 songs in the library, now
there are 8,000 songs. I need to eliminate the 4,000 dead song files. 2) All
the playlists are still associated with the dead song files which makes the
playlists unusable. Can the playlists be reconnected to the usable files
without manually having to recreate them? Thanks in advance for the help.

    So am I understanding correctly?
You used your iPod as a hard drive (drag and drop) instead of having iTunes install the music?
If you used drag and drop your choices are different than if you used iTunes to transfer.
    Good luck!

  • I just bought a Mac today and have never had one, my Itunes shows to have all of my music on it but it won't allow me to play it out loud, it says my computer is not authorized? what does this mean?

I'm a first time Mac user and I went to play my music on Itunes out loud and all the music I previously purchased will not play and then a pop up appears saying my computer is not authorized? what does this mean and how can I fix it?

You need to authorize the new computer that youre working with. First hover over the store button at the top of the screen and then select the authorize this computer button then a popup will appear where you have to put in your Apple ID and Password. Hopefully this works for you

  • What is this Symbol called and what does it mean?

What is this symbol/icon called and what does it mean?  It goes away with it's "notification" and I would have no idea where to find it should I need to.
    Please.  And thank you.

It did come from Apple as I had to deal with this.  But in speaking with another "Genius" I was trying to describe the symbol to him and never got an answer.

  • Images have ? symbol on the top right corner of the thumbnail  what does this mean and how do I remove it?

    Q - My images have a
? symbol on the top right corner of the thumbnail what does this mean and how do I remove it?
    A - The
? symbol is used to identify a file that Lightroom can no longer access; probably because it has been moved using OS drag/drop or Move command rather than Lightroom.
    Click the
? symbol will cause a small dialog will appear. This dialog will provide information as to where the file was originally located along with an option to find (Locate) it again.
As you'll quickly realise, clicking the
? symbol is fine for finding individual files that may have been relocated, but not for large numbers. There must be a better way
Look at the Folder panel (left side of Library module) and you should find that the folder/subfolder containing the files that Lightroom can no longer find are shown in Red text. It is the red text that Lightroom uses to help you identify a folder/subfolder that contains files that it has lost track off.
    On the Mac you should
Ctrl-click (right-click when using two button mouse) the folder/subfolder, a pop-up menu will appear. From the pop-up menu choose the command
Locate Missing Folder, a dialog should appear. The dialog gives you access to every hard disk connected to your computer or CD/DVDs if they're in the tray. Use this dialog to navigate to the location where the folder is now located, then select this folder (not the files). Finally, press the
Choose button and allow Lightroom to do its stuff.
The method described above also applies to the PC version although the dialog is called
    Browse for Folder and the
    Choose button is replaced by
    OK.
You can avoid getting into a situation were Lightroom looses track of your folders/subfolders by using a variation of above.

  • I can't log in to my computer- when it turns on it has a white/gray screen with a flashing folder with a question mark in it.  What does this mean and how can I get it to stop to log in?

    Hi
I dropped my macbook yesterday and it turned itself off. When I tried to turn it back on all I got was a white/gray screen with a flash folder with a ? in the middle of it?  What does this mean and how do I get it to stop so I can log onto my laptop?

    Deev
Normally the question mark on the gray screen means it can't find the operating system. Have you tried booting up from the installation DVD? Do that, and when you come to the screen where it wants to begin a system installation you'll notice in the menubar where it say's utilites. Click on that and choose disk utility. from there choose your disk and try to verify and repair the disk. If you can you may want to also try and new install of the system. I don't know how much critical data you have, but reinstalling is an option. did you purcahse you from an Apple store? If you did you may want them to look at it. Hope this helps.

  • Confirming, indexing, creating peak file. What's this all about?

Althought I'm new to PrPro (see my very first post, it was the that I just started using this app), premiere already ate me that anywhere I go, when it comes to video editing, I am in its belly. But still I want an explanation regarding (again) about this message that's appearing in the status bar: 'conforming ?????.mpg". I don't really understand what's this all about. A little explanation is a lot to me. But what I am concerning about this thing is, it seems to be endless. PrPro had done already on all of my assets, conforming, creating peak files, indexing, but it still keeps on doing it again and again. Is there a problem with my audio/video files?
During the first time of my use, I didn't mind. I didn't even notice it. But now I started to be concerned with it since I my pc really slows down when PrPro starts this seemingly perpetual activity. If there's a problem somewhere else please help me.

Did you notice that you make the same mistake as one of our regulars here, the_wine_snob, otherwise known as Bill Hunt, in leaving out one 'a' in my last name? I'm not offended but wonder if that is a human trait to not overdo it and two 'a'-s may be too much?
I resemble that comment! Harm, you have to realize that I am from Mississippi, and everyone is known as Billy Bob, Joe Bob, or Bubba. We had no Harm Millaards - too many double vowels and consonants for us. At least this helped, when I signed up for a bunch of X-rated sites, as Harm Millard...
OK, where were we? LameTiger (check that spelling, as I think I got it wrong again and apologize profusely), when one has non-standard footage, three thing need to happen: the files need to be indexed, the Audio must be Conformed (CFA files) and the Waveform Display (PEK) files must be created. Depending on the number of files, their Duration and one's computer's speed this can take from moments, to maybe 20 mins.
If you have not just loaded up this Project, then gone for a cup of coffee, or tea, I urge you to do so. There is a tiny progress bar in the very lower-right of the GUI, that traces this. Let it happen, and be patient. I know that this sounds like a scene from the Karate Kid, but it's important. Many systems will crash, if one tried to do anything, before this process completes. I can work (albeit slowly), during the process. Many cannot.
Now, if you HAVE patiently waited this process out, and it has completed, AND the next session yields the exact same thing, then something is not quite right. Could be files getting moved, deleted, or otherwise not available to PrPro, or some setting in one's Scratch Disks, or some other problem.
Hope that a bit of patience, and a cup of Darjelling helps. Please let us know.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know some details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • -XXdisablefatspin in 1.4.2_04...what does this mean ?

I am not able to find any doc on this vm option. We are having a issue with this VM ( without the disablefatspin option set ) running weblogic, where after a few hundred requests ( on a SMP machine ), the VM does not respond. We are forced to restart. Thread dumps show a "lock chain" although no deadlocks.
Somebody in this newsgroup ( archive ) had suggested setting the "-XXdisablefatspin option. What does this option do ? Any docs related to this for 1.4.2_04 VM ?
