What is time machine?

How do I partition an external hard drive to use for time time?

As I remember, when I purchased my LaCie HD, I simply plugged it in, clicked on the Time Machine icon in Systems Preferences and followed the on-screen instructions to do the initial backup.  I don't remember having to partition anything.  After that, Time Machine backs up every hour.

  • What is Time Machine really Backing Up?

I have two internal HD's one 750gig that has Leopard on it, & a second HD that is 500gigs.
I have Time Machine backing up everything. I have noticed this for some time now, & have watched it
very carefully what is new on my system this month, beside a few texted emails, I have nothing new, no new programs, no new photos or no new music or videos. So what is Time Machine backing up?
I plugged in my external HD & let Time Machine start backing up, it stated it was backing up 5.2gigs of WHAT! is my question.
    Thanks

If you have photos, then editing any photos will also require an update. You didn't mention which email client you are using. Are you using VMWare or Parallels? To see what folders/files are being updated, you can try:

I have iOS 10.7.5 and if i update to Mountain lion 10.8.2 will i lose all my old applications i've purchased and other software i've downloaded? and what is time machine ?

No. You will not lose any of the applications and data will be safe.
But make sure that you have working backup. This is very important.
Time Machine is the built-in backup software/application.
    Best.

  • Can anyone tell me what this Time Machine error means? The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features?

Can anyone tell me what this Time Machine error means? The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features?

    AFP - Apple Filing Protocol
The Network Attached Storage (NAS) that you are pointing Time Machine at does not have the features needed by Time Machine in order to do its Thing.  Time Machine needs some specific features that are not typically available on generic networked storage devices.
There are manufactures that support the Mac OS X HFS+ file system formats and implement all the needed AFP protocol packets necessary so that they can be used with Time Machine, but apparently yours does not.
If you are not using a networked mounted volume for Time Machine, then more information will be needed about your Time Machine setup.

  • HT201250 What does time Machine back-up?

I would like to use Time Machine as a back-up on an external USB hard drive.  However, I am not sure what it actually backs up.  I want it to back up only the main Mac hard drive and not all the files and folders on the external drive which I will also use as the destination for the TimeMachine back-up.  Is there a way to do this or does Time Machine only back-up the main MacHD and not connected "data" drives like the external one I will use for TimeMachine.  Also, how do I make a bootable "rescue" drive or disk if my hard drive fails and I want to install a new one?  Will a "rescue USB flash drive" -- bootable  with the operating system (Mountain Lion) in it -- in conjunction with Time Machine on the external drive restore a new hard drive (MacHD) to what was on the old one?  Finally, how does one make a rescue (bootable) USB flash drive with OSX 10.8.2 on it?

Try going system preferences>time machine.select disk>highlight the disk, click use for back up (make sure the padlock is unlocked.  If this has already been done there might be a problem with the disk.  Go to utililites>disk utilities highlight the disk click verify disk.

  • What Is Time Machine? What does it Do?

I've heard of time machine backup before, what does it do? How does it work? Is it avalible for Windows 7?

It does not backup iPhones. iTunes backs up iPhones. If you backup your computer with Time Machine, then the iTunes backup will itself be backed up.
However, none of this will help you recover an old iPhone backup you now want. None of that would work until after you started using Time Machine. And only from the date forward.

  • What is Time Machine on my Imac cleaning up?

Did a full back on 1 TB Imac Hard drive.  Now Time Machine is "cleaning up"? what is it cleaning - old backups?  If so, what happens if I cancell it prematurely?
    Thank you.

That usually is updating changes to all the files, after looking through to see what has changed. So if you cancel that, you probably won't really be updating any files that were 'untouched' by new info at that point. Maybe not a good idea.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What is Time Machine actually doing?

During Time Machine backups, I always get curious as to what Time Machine is actually doing.
For example, towards the end of a backup, TM is "Cleaning up...". What does that mean? I didn't realise TM made a mess to begin with. And also, when I click "Stop Backing Up" whilst TM is cleaning up, the backup finishes a lot quicker, yet is considered a successful backup. Makes me think that "Cleaning up..." is an unnecessary part of the whole process.
Additionally, there is also this "Finalising backup..." message. What does that even mean? Once your finished cleaning up, surely there's nothing more to be done?
Just curious as to whether or not anybody has figured out what TM is actually doing.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
The main things are converting the "in.Progress" package into an actual backup folder; deleting "expired" backups, if necessary; and finishing up the (hidden) log in each backup folder, updating the status, date of last backup, in various places.
If you cancel while it's deleting expired backups, it just skips that step, as it will get them the next time, so yes, that's considered a successful backup.
See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget to display the backup messages from your logs.

  • What is time machine backing up?

I noticed today thought that Time Machine had run out of space and needed to clear some up. It was the first time I'd seem this message, so I figure after having backups since November, I was due for the delete message, but I got a couple of them throughout the day today which concerned me.
I installed Aperture 2 yesterday and have been doing some website changes in iWeb. From what I understand, Aperture 2 works with Time Machine and shouldn't need to copy the entire library over if there is just a small change within it. My iWeb domain file is only 40'ish megs.
It seems like Time Machine is doing some weird stuff. I just checked the time machine logs and it's suddenly trying to backup 46GB of stuff when there certainly haven't been 40GB of changes.
I'd like to try to figure out what Time Machine is actually doing.
    I followed this hint: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071201084525895
But I was unable to get Instruments to show anything. All I get is a "Could not load DTrace server" - whatever that means.
    Anyone have any magic bullets?

  • What will Time Machine/T.C. actually backup?

    1. A firewire drive mounted.
    2. a NAS drive mounted.
    3. Of the mac's files, will it take everything, OS included, or just the documents/movies/music it finds? What about the desktop junk? Can you specify what?
    4. Can you tell T.M. when to do the backups? or does it interrupt you all the time?
I have a time capsule, it's working, but I have yet to delve into using it as a backup. I can't decide if I should use the drive in the TC as it's intended purpose, a backup (which I would then backup again to a USB attached drive), or keep using my Lacie NAS as my main backup, and then backup everything to the T.C. and only use an external for a 3rd level of backup that I take off-site once a month.
    Thoughts?

The general rule of thumb is that you need about twice as much space on the backup drive for Time Machine as you are using on your computer. In other words, if your files use 250 GB on your computer, ideally you would want to have 500 GB available for Time Machine backups. This will allow Time Machine to build a long history of backups. If you don't need to go back in time more than a few weeks or months, you can get by with less storage space.

  • What will Time machine do after a complete uninstal of OSX?

If I completly remove OSX from the machine, format the drive, then do a brand new install of OSX, on the new install, if I hook up my Time Machine HDD and run time machine I can re-load specific folders from my old (1st) install?
Also I used bootcamp to create a second partion that runs windows.  Will that partition remain intacted if I re-install OSX?  Will only the OSX partition be formatted?

What you want to do is make yourself a "hold the option key" bootable clone.
1: Get yourself another external powered hard drive.
Disconnect any other drive, don't want to format them by accident.
2: Open Disk Utility in your Applications > Utilities folder
3: Select the new external drive makers name and click Erase > Format HFS+ Journaled (default setting) click Security Option > Zero all Data from the drop down menu that appears. Now wait, it could take a hour or so.
The "Zero" is a extra step to map off potential bad sectors on the drive before data is laid, I do this to all my new drives once, makes the data more reliable, after that a regular Erase is sufficient unless you want to scrub the drive of any trace of data.
4: Once finished you'll have a ready HFS+Journaled external hard drive to clone to.
5: Download the free to use (donations accepted) Carbon Copy Cloner here:
    http://www.bombich.com/
6: The default setting to clone one drive to another should be fine for cloning to a blank drive the first time (it takes awhile), it's just later on that CCC offers a high amount of customized backup features when you update the clone. You will need to learn to understand what will happen when you update your clone. (files that changed will be archived on the same drive for instance) For now you can just leave things be and clone A to B.
7: Once that's finished, open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on both drives, there will be a long list of things fixed and if you do it again the same list, it's ok to ignore it.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448
8: Now you can experiment and hold the option key and boot from the external drive. You will notice you can access the files on your internal drive.
Check out your clone and make sure your happy because later on when you erase your internal drive from Disk Utility (either option booted from the clone or hold c booted off the OS X installer disk) it's going to contain your old system in it's entirety.
9: Now hold c and boot off the OS X installer disk and use Disk Utility to erase your OS X partition and reinstall OS X like you want. When you go through setup use the same hard drive name and user name as before (different password) this way when you reboot and drag & drop copy the contents of your user folders from the old clone into the user folders of your new boot configuration your iTunes playlists and other "references" (pathnames) to your files remains intact
You can cherry pick user files from the clone this way, cleaning house essentially, with only what you want on the new internal boot drive configuration. But before you do that, make sure you Software Update fully and install your program from fresh sources to make sure they are pristine. Doing Software Update and installing programs first before returning files optimizes OS and programs so they are placed on the faster part of the drive near the front.
10: Once your up on your new drive good, clone that to yet another hard drive, using the same methods above and you'll have a bootable backup.
Note: TimeMachine + Migration or Setup Assistant for restoring is indiscriminate, it just copies. And TimeMachine drives are not bootable.

  • Exactly What Does Time Machine Back Up?

I have four mounted volumes on my desktop. One is the vanilla MacintoshHD system volume. Two are external hard drives with lots of photo image files. And one is my Time Machine destination volume.
Am I correct that Time Machine will back up all of the mounted volumes except the destination volume and any other specific exclusions that were specified in Time Machine setup?
    Thanks.

It backs up everything on Mac-formatted local volumes except the backup volumes themselves and what ever else is excluded in the Time Machine preference pane. External drives (except Thunderbolt drives) are automatically added to the exclusion list, so you have to remove them if you want them to be backed up. Cache and log files are always excluded.

  • How can I tell what files Time Machine is currently backing up?

When I check the size of the current backup that Time Machine is performing, I frequently see a large number of GBs being backed up.  I would like to stop Time Machine and see what is in the current backup list so I can have the option of deleting them from my Mac Pro running Lion which would save space in my TM backup drive.  I assume I might have to consider to 3rd party software.  Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In fact, Linc, you answered my question.  The problem was I did not word my question properly.  What I meant to ask is can I stop a current backup of TM and look at a list of files that it is attempting to back up for this next backup?
Oh, and thanks for the heads up about BackupLoupe.  I bought it.

  • What was time machine backing up?

This morning I have been working on my address-book; importing, deleting, importing, etc, incl. sync with mobile-me.
All of a sudden I saw backups of 3-4 Gb being performed.
Can I find out what data was backed up? I'm sure I can delete most of it!

    HI,
Try here. Mac 101 - Time Machine
Removing a file from your backup disk
You can delete all copies of a backed-up file or folder from your Time Machine backup disk.
IMPORTANT:Do not open the Backups.backupdb folder on your Time Machine backup disk and remove items from it. To remove a file or folder and all its copies from the Time Machine backup disk, follow the instructions below.
To remove a backed-up file or folder:
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.
If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the Dock, look for Time Machine in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through the backups Time Machine has created.
The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to delete, select it, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose Delete All Backups for the item.
