What is trex?

Hi all,
Can ayone plz tell me what trex is?? I searched many of the queries posted regarding this..But stil cant understand it properly, bt i know tat its a search engine like google.. My questions are like this...
Is TREX a software to be installed or is it a component to be deployed in portal?
what are the pre-requisites for installing TREX and also steps for installation ?
Currently im working on SAP Netweaver 2004 and EP 7.0
can trex be configured in EP portal?
If so,what are the steps for configuration of TREX in EP Portal?
plz help me out..

Hi,
SAP NetWeaver 2004s TREX text retrieval and classification is the underlying engine for the BI accelerator.A TREX aggregation engine for processing structured business data is powering these capabilities. The data of the BI InfoCubes are replicated to the TREX engine and are stored as TREX indices. The BI accelerator clearly reduces the response time, specially for large data volumes.TREX is a separate installation from the SAP BW installation. TREX is an indexed search engine for SAP applications and is most helpful for SAP Knowledge Management (KM). For SAP BW, the two big uses are for Metadata Repository and portal searches.
TREX and BWA (formerly BIA) are mutually exclusive. As state above, TREX is an indexed search engine, much like Google. BIA, however, is a series of blade servers where InfoCubes are loaded onto, so that those InfoCubes are cached and therefore "RAM resident" to queries, making data access times faster.

TREX Indexed information by document type

Hi,
Where can i find documentation about what properties TREX indexes for each document type?
For example:
- Each word document has the following properties (Title, Subject, Author, Manager, Company, Category, Comments Keywords, ). The PDF documents have similar properties. Is this information indexed by TREX?
My question is related with AutoCAD documents. These documents contain legend information, and need to know if this information is indexed by TREX and can be used to search?

Hi Jasmine,
1.In the EP 6.0 you can create index System Administration -> System Configuration -> Knowledge Management -> Index Administration
2.TREX is search engine that will proccess the documents that you have specified in the index Data sources when you have created the index.
The status of TREX you can see in System Administration -> Monitoring -> Knowledge Management -> TREX Monitor or Index Monitor for indexing monitoring.
If you don't have connected any TREX engine to J2EE, just start the visual administrator and configure the TREX service.
To install the TREX you can follow the instguides for TREX service.sap.com/instguides SAP Netweaver->Release 04 or 2004s -> Installation -> Cross-NW

Hi EP is just a wrapper portal whcih has very strong integrating capabilities with SAP or any non SAP systems.
when you intall portal in that KM (knowledge management) & Colloborastion features comes by default.
what is KMC :
In KM you have features like you can store Documents in any form in the portal it may be word, excel, pdg, music files, videos, html ...etc etc etc...
now these files can be shown using the help of diffrn diffrnt ivews, you can use KM upload ivew to upload these documents or use KM document ivew to display these ivews.
in KM you have many std. features such as News, Discussions, Polls etc etc.
Using colloaboration you can get fetures like, collaboration launch pad, interactive chat, desktop sharing etc etc... for more info refer the links below.

Hi,
The meaning of TREX is Search and Classification.
TREX is a search engine used for searching the KM documents in a classified way.
You can use taxonimies(query based or example based) for classifying the documents.
TREx needs to be configured before using the search functionality.

I installed trex 6.1 on my machine for testing
How do i know if its running?
What all to configure? The folders are all created .
I am using WIndows XP and IIS is enabled But if i go to IIS and see Trex_04 it shows error there? Is it because ints not configured?
Please help ,the install guide points to STart-Programs--Trex Instance But it doesnt get created here

One TREX server for multiple Portals?

I have the same requirement as that contained in this thread:

I wonder if anyone can technically elaborate a bit what the procedure for this configuration.
I would have to install a TREX and create a TREX instance for each Portal that I want to give TREX service?
Each instance points to a different host?
My requirement is to use the same TREX to both DEV and QA Portal hosts.

TREX - Configuring Distributed Slave with Decentralized Data Storage

I am creating a distributed TREX environment with decentralized data storage with 3 hosts. The environment is running TREX 7.10 Rev 14 on Windows 2003 x64. These are the hosts:
Server 01p: 1st Master NameServer, Master Index Server, Master Queue Server
Server 02p: 2nd Master NameServer, Slave Index Server
Server 03p: Slave NameServer, Slave Index Server (GOAL; Not there yet)
The first and second hosts are properly set up, with the first host creating the index and replicating the snapshot to the slave index server for searching. The third host is added to the landscape. When I attempt to change the role of the third host to be a slave for the Master IS and run a check on the landscape, I receive the following errors:

slaves: select 'Use Central Storage' for shared slaves on central storage or change base path to non shared location
The installs were all performed in the same with, with storage on the "E:" drive using a local install on the stand-alone installation as described in the TREX71InstallMultipleHosts and TREX71INstallSingleHosts guides provided.
Does anybody know what I should try to do to resolve this issue to add the third host to my TREX distributed landscape? There really weren't any documents that gave more information besides the install documents.

A ticket was opened with SAP customer support. The response to that ticket is below:
Many thanks for the connection. We found out, that the error message is wrong. It can be ignored, if you press 'Shift' and button 'Deploy' (TREXAdmin tool -> Landscape Configuration). We will fix this error in the next Revision (Revision 25) for TREX 7.1.

Basic Search functionality for KM documents folder without TREX

Hi Knowldge Management Guru's,
I am using default KM content management repository no external repository i have folders and sub folders and documents ( word, html, pdf, excel).I have enabled search button in tool area.
What are the prerequisites to search documents in Content management /documents folder
1. Do we need TREX is it must and mandatory for searching
Does enterprise portal provide basic/default search functionality without integrating TREX or external/third party search engines.
