What is up with iWork install DVD's?

First one, bad, gave install error at 98%. Drive could not read past that point. Tried twice, failed both times, scanned disk and it failed to even get through the scan. Took it out and noticed deep scratch on outer edge. Exchanged for new iWork, took it home (mistake) and immediately opened and observed two dimples in reflective layer on the outer edge. Tried install same results. See for yourself -

So, am I that unlucky? I've never had trouble with any Apple software. Anyone else finding it hard to get a good disc?

I used Toast, it's a great app and honestly worth getting either way.
Otherwise:
For Mac OS X 10.3 or later
Insert the DVD-R disc into the SuperDrive.
Open the Disk Utility application. It's in the Utilities folder, which is in your Applications folder (or choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu).
Select the disc (not just the disc session) you want to copy from the listing.
From the Images menu, choose New and the choose Image from "your disk name". (Mac OS X 10.4 and later: From the File menu, choose New and the choose Image from "your disk name").
Type a file name and choose "DVD/CD Master" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
Click the Create button. After the image has been created you should see it in the disk listing in the Disk Utility window.
Eject the DVD-R video disc.
Select the disk image you created from the listing.
Click the Burn icon in the toolbar.
Later versions of Disk Utility will use the ".cdr" extension instead of ".dmg"
When prompted, insert a blank DVD-R disc.
Click the Burn button.

  • What's up with "Downloading, Installing, Setting Up"?

    Hello,
what's up with "Downloading, Installing, Setting Up"? It is striking how often this problem confronts us again and again in recent times. How is it possible that Adobe does not notice that. I wish that they would take action and forward it to the places of developing.
    Hans-Günter

    Guten Morgen Pat,
Hierzu musst Du allerdings die Funktion "Show 5 more" und danach "See all content results" benutzen.
"hans cleaner tool" sehen kannst.
    usw.
Also dann, vielleicht kommen wir jetzt ein bisschen weiter.
    Danke
    Hans-Günter

  • My iMac keeps restarting forever when I try to reboot it with the install DVD.

Whenever I insert the install disc and restart the computer, it just keeps on restarting forever. Nothing seems to work, be it pressing on the "C" key as it starts up, or the option key (this would actually make the hard drive and install DVD icons appear, but whenever I select the DVD icon, the computer would still just restart..).
There seems to be no problem with the DVD when I insert it in the running computer. The finder window would appear, telling me to restart the computer to start the installation, but then the problem would persist as I start it up.
Should I just order a copy of Snow Leopard or is the problem coming from the computer?

First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.

  • New HD, problem with Leopard install DVD, How to reinstall OS?

    Hi,
My hard drive crashed. I'm travelling and am in a small village in rural India. No Mac shops around. I've managed to get a new HD (WD 80GB), now I'm having trouble with the installation of the OS.
Although I have my data backed up onto an external HD, I don't have the OS itself backed up. I have my Mac OSX Leopard installation disk with me. I thought this would cover me for exactly this sort of problem. But it doesn't seem to.
I've got the new HD in and it seems to be working. It's been formatted and it shows up ok when I boot up with the Leopard disk. I get past the question about language and accepting the licence terms.
Then it goes into checking source disk mode. When it gets to about half way I get a message saying it can't continue, Disk is dirty and it needs to be cleaned.
Well, I've taken it out and it looks ok. I don't see any deep scratches. Still, this has now happened twice.
I tried to copy the disk on another PC but it returned a message saying 'corrupt files'. So it seems as though something is wrong with the disk, even though it's not apparent when you look at it.
Now I'm stuck. My very original 10.4 disks that came with the machine are thousands of miles away, and inaccessible for all practical purposes.
The Powerbook has been registered with Apple since I bought it years ago, although it's not eligible for support any more.
    1. Is there a way I can download the OS X I need to get the show back on the road, whether from Apple or from a third party?
    2. Which version of the OS do I actually need for a complete new installation?
    3. What can I do about my apparently damaged Leopard dvd? Although I'd prefer to continue with Leopard, it wouldn't really worry me going back to Tiger for the next few months till I'm back in Apple-Mac-land. The main thing is to get the computer running.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Elle

In order to use a correct install disc, it would have to be either the
version that shipped with the computer (when new) or a retail
version newer than that which shipped with it, in order for the disc
    to function in the computer.
In some cities, there are companies who resell CDs and DVDs
and they have a machine or tool that helps polish out scratches
so they can still make use of those discs; or at least not toss
away a potential profit. There may be a company or computer
user with the kit to polish scratches out of the readable side
of a DVD or CD disc. (They sell these, in many countries, too.)
+In the middle of nowhere, you may have to improvise; or find+
+someone with basic skills and simple tools. If only a lightly+
+scratched Installer disc is the problem, simple polishing skills+
+would probably make it more readable to the laser in the Mac.+
    • How to fix a scratched DVD with items you may have at home:

    • To fix a scratched DVD... (avoid toothpaste, etc.)
    http://www.yelp.com/topic/new-york-to-fix-a-scratched-dvd
{a google of the topic may help, if you can access outside
    of just one region, and if google isn't blocked, etc.}
Perhaps if the issue is only with the Leopard DVD install disc
you have, it may be cleaned professionally. IF you go there,
ask if there is a reduced fee for this (they polish the surface)
if for some reason, it still won't work after they are done.
In the states some shops that bought & sold DVDs & CDs
would pay much less for scratched-up ones, & clean them.
This would include the device or careful hand-power, to
get the surface layer of plastic as unscratched as possible
so the laser-beam reader can pass through the bad places.
    The idea of getting a downloaded version would be an illegal item;
and also those methods often get you malware or virus laden junk.
You could probably use the serial number of your computer and
visit one of the 'info by serial number' online services, to see what
version OS X your computer (and its original specs, build date, etc)
would have shipped with; so as to get a newer OS X retail disc.
That, if no other option were available.
An unused (not currently being run in a computer) official OS X
install disc, not one from a different computer model, and not
one too old, since older or equal (ie: 10.4.2, for a mid-2005 iBook
would require a newer than 10.4.2 retail installer for Tiger, etc.)
So, you see there is some kind of logic to getting a disc newer
than the one you don't have; or an exact replacement.
Someone who no longer has need for or uses the correct version
Installer could give or sell you their disc. But, a download is certainly
not something we'll go further into, since it would be illegal.
Sorry for the longish reply, it is going on 1AM here in the farther
north western northern hemisphere; and I should be asleep.
Maybe someone else will post a timely reply, given your location
and time differences. A real city may have authorized Apple sellers
with a service department or customer relations who may offer
some advice in regard to other services available. But almost
any place that can polish scratches out of a CD may be of help.
And try to not act too anxious about it; that may add to the cost.
Or a piece of fine chamois cloth (fine suede) and light rouge may work.
Polish in a spoke-wheel pattern from the center; not all in one direction.
And hope the optical drive isn't also dirty; as they eventually get that way.
Some places that rent movies on DVD may be able to clean/polish DVDs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What's Up With My Tiger DVDs?

I bought a refurbished Core Dual 2gHz MBP from the Apple store some time back. The DVD drive does not support DL recording and no reference is made to DL read capability. Two MacBook Pro System 10.4.6 Install DVDs were included. The OS was already installed in the MBP and it has since been upgraded to 10.4.11.
I tried to make a backup copy of Disc 1 and found the disc contained 4.8 g of data. The blank single layer DVDs I have, or found available, have a capacity of 4.7g so the backup fails.
Disc 2 of the set seems to be double layered since it contains 7.75g of data. In the MBP this Disc only opens a brief note about using Disc 1 to install the system.
Can anyone offer any insight to what all this mish-mash is about?
Do full retail versions of Tiger contain program versions suitable for both Intel and PowerPC platforms?
    Thanks,
    Don Rieg

Do full retail versions of Tiger contain program versions suitable for both Intel and PowerPC platforms?
No. With the exception of a server release, retail DVDs of Tiger are only designed to install on PPCs. All early Intel Macs already came with their own version of Tiger and it was not deemed necessary to supply retail Tiger for them. All later Macs came with Leopard and could not run Tiger anyway.
I would hope something as recent as your computer would support reading DL even though it doesn't support burning. There are a number of DVD drives out there that were around quite a while before DL became common and many, though not all, can read DL.

Do the iMac come installed with iwork

No. You have to buy the iWork apps separately if you want them. You can see what does come with a new iMac here:

  • Installing 10.6 on a formatted drive with no install DVD

    Hi,
I have an intel 2006 core duo iMac which has a formatted drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)). I want to instal Snow Leopard on this iMac, the latest version of OS X I can I believe, but I do not have the install DVD.
I have a Snow Leopard DVD which came with my MacBook Pro, but when I tried to use that an error told me that Snow Leopard could not be installed on the iMac. I know it can as I have seen it running.
Is this because I am trying to use the DVD that came with my MacBook Pro? If so, what are the options available to me to get a copy of the OS that I can install from?
    Many thanks,
    Ian

You cannot use an installer DVD for another model. They are usually incompatible and it's illegal.
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Depending upon the actual model you have you may be able to install Lion on it. You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
    Snow Leopard General requirements

      2. 1GB of memory
      3. 5GB of available disk space

  • Can't install OS 10.4.6 on my imac 5.1 with the install dvd.

I borrowed the install disk from a friend and tried to format the HD and start up from the new OS but it doesn't work. Is the disk specific to my friend's computer or is my computer too old to support the new OS? How can I format and start up my computer without having to use my older OS version install dvds?

I just wanted to start it from Leopard again instead of my Tiger disks, but I no longer have the retail Leopard dvd.
Well, what was really confusing about your post was its title (Can't install OS 10.4.6...) where you implied you wanted to (re)install a version of Tiger!
I was going to question you why you wanted to do that but I figured you knew what you wanted.  If you don't have your original installer disks then you need to acquire the retail installer.

  • NetInstall with Applications Install DVD packages

Trying to re-image machines and NetInstall is a lot of trial and error, so hopefully someone will have some suggestions. I have learned from trial and error that I can re-image machines with the OS from the original install images and iLife by showing invisible files and selecting the separate installer packages from the iLife disk images. If I try to just select the installer package from the image/disk, i breaks the install image NetInstall. Now... on to the next questions.
If I try the same trick, but instead of using the iLife image/disk and use the Applications Install DVD/image, this "trick" does not work. It will break the install because some package is not being included (I think it's an iMovie file). Of course, just selecting the main package from the installer on the Applications Install breaks it as well. Anyone have any insight into this issue?
    thanks

For a nominal fee you can always see if Apple has a replacement disc.  It usually runs about $20 a disc, though prices may change.    If your system is functioning a clone backup will ensure you'll always have copies of your data.   See my FAQ*:

  • Problems with iWork install after free trial

Download free trial of iWork.  Liked it, decided to purchase family pack as I have several iMacs.  On the computer with the free trial, it keeps asking for serial number and will not open any iWork app.  Wants me to purchase iWork, which I have HELP!

You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

  • What to do with iWork licence if reinstalling Snow Leopard

I need to reformat my disk and reinstall Snow Leopard. I have a Family pack iWorks 09. What do I need to do to reinstall iWorks after I reinstall SL? Any issues about the licence that I should be aware of? Also what do I need to do to recover any of the templates I have created in Pages?
    Thanks.
    Stephen

    Hi Stephen
If you have the DVDs and had no serial number just reinstall.
If you had a DL and a serial just use that serial number when you reinstall.
Your personal templates are stored in:
~/Library/Application Support/iWork/Pages/My Templates unless you put them somewhere else.
Just back them up and drag them back to the same location after the reinstall.
I suggest you use *Carbon Copy* to make a compressed back up of your entire HD and mount and use that to get all your old stuff back after the reinstall. OSX has succeeded in becoming as complex if not more so than Windows (and the crowds cheered for more!), so I would not count on you having manually located everything you are going to miss after the reinstall.

  • What will happen with my installed softwares?

Hi I am using MacBook Pro with C2D and having latest version of SL. But I have installed lots of software useful for my business including virtual machine and I am using Windows 7 ultimate on it. So I am wondering what will happen if I upgrade this to Lion? Do I need to install everything again or it will be as it is like on my snow leopard?

I don't know about VMware, but I can tell you that when I opened Windows XP the first time in Parallels after upgrading to Lion, I had to re-setup the virtual machine. Other than this, no problems. CS3 and older WILL NOT run in Lion, but CS4 and newer run without problems.
Go to About this Mac > applications, and here you can see which of your applications are PowerPC, thus not compatible with Lion.
    Cheers

  • Failed burn after failed burn - What is up with the new DVD+R DL burner???

I burn a lot of DVD-R single layer DVDs at work on my G5. Both from TS folders and from disk images.
But my new Intel iMac 20 inch, has yet to burn a dual layer DVD+R disk and fails half the time with DVD-r single layer disks.
Using both Disk Utility and Popcorn.
Is this a bug, anybody else having problems?

Hold on to your hats ... I've burned about 300 DVDs on a variety of DVD media. I'm always copying stuff off to DVDRW or CDRW from movies (often video TS) to 4.4gig of data saved to DVDRW (geez, I LOVE that). Now have a great library of movies, TV shows, specials, sports. I use EyeTV to capture TV stuff then Toast 7.0.2 to burn to DVD, with and without chapters. I make backups of Movie DVDs from originals as well as old VHS fed through EyeTV and/or a Canon GL2 camcorder. No problems at all. I use genric media from Staples and it works great. Every now and then I get a coaster and recopy without problems.
I also have an external LaCie Slim DVDRW/CDRW and it is not officially supported by Apple (most other LaCies are fully supported) yet it works like a champ!.
    I truly love my iMac.

If I have Lion 10.7.4, does the installer DVD still work? I have and iWork 904 installer DVD and don't want to have to spend extra money on the App store.

I was waiting to try until I posted the question here. I figured if it wouldn't work, then I wouldn't waste the time and just repurchase via the app store.. thanks for the info!
