What is up with my iMac?

So here is what is happening to my iMac, (by the way its a power g5 non iSight leopard OS)It began to freeze and slow down , got the grey screen and would not boot up again. Tried all of the combination of command + keys available, nothing. Tried target mode, etc, pretty much tried it all, moved to beleiving that my hard drive had fried, I replaced it.
Placed the original dvd and booted into it, after a very long time, and I do mean long time, I was able to get into disk utilities, also the old hard drive, the one I thought was dead, I put into a slay and pluged it into the mac.
Disk utilities saw my newly installed drive, and saw my old drive, I proceeded to do a scan and fix on the old drive and thought it would all be okay. Went back installed my old drive and removed my new drive, since I thought that the problem had been solved, but nope. I was unable to boot into the mac again, so I went into it again and replaced the hard drive again, with the new one, and booted with the original dvd.
Once inside the installation I did the disk utilities, and tried to format the drive, erase the drive , but nothing it gave me an error and was unable to install the os.
Does anyone one have any idea what is going on? I am pretty certain that the hard drive is not the cause, but what can it be?
Anyhelp appreciated!!

You can't format it before putting it in the Mac, I just wondered if you had bought one which came already Windows formatted, many drives do. Did Disk Utilities from the install disk come up with any errors? Do you have DiskWarrior or TechToolPro?
It could be that your logic board had failed, but give resetting both your PRAM and SMU a go.

What's wrong with my iMac G3?
Ok. I'm going to attempt to be as thorough as possible on this one. When I first got my iMac G3, it was stated to be non working. I got it from freecycle. The lady who provided my with the machine said that "one day it just wouldn't turn on". So, I still took it home. After I set it up, it turned on and booted into Mac OS 8.6 no problem. After about two days of using it, I turned it on again and it said something about "finder could not be started because draglib-setdragimage (or something like that) could not be found." It gave me a restart button, which I clicked. After about a day of messing around with it, I found that holding the shift key to disable extensions would allow it to boot properly. I decided to re-install 8.6. However, the cd was not recognized (perhaps because it was an ISO, not DMG). So, I proceeded to install panther. The first time it booted with the panther cd (and ever since), there has been no startup chime. It also will only get to the apple logo, without the spinning thing, where it freezes. Only the button on the keyboard works to start it up. And, occasionally it will boot into open firmware. I don't know what to do from here. I can still boot into os 8.6 with extensions off.
    Help?
    Thanks so much in advance,
    -Don

And, occasionally it will boot into open firmware.
Seems odd to me. All by itself? Did you press any keys?
I don't know what to do from here. I can still boot into os 8.6 with extensions off.
Most likely, you have a bad extension. They are in a folder called extensions What you need to do is create a new folder and move extensions to this folder. Move extensions to the folder in groups. try 1/2 first. Move back & forth between folders. See which extension is causing the problem. command + n to create a new folder
verify that you have the correct firmware.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
    Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
    click on Hardware
    read the Boot ROM Version
    3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
The 4.1.9f1 will be different on a 333 machine.
    What firmware do you need?

    Hello
I'd really appreciate some help and advice with by iMac !
I'm having a really strange issue and I've no idea whats casuing it.
After using it for a while whichever window is open starts to black out - you can shut the window down but it remains there - if you click you mouse onto the screen you can pull a square out and it reveals the desktop wall paper underneath !
You cant force quit the open screens, the only way to stop it is to restart.
I have posted some photos for you to see - I hope someone can help !

Just to state again I blew a heck of a lot of dust out (with a compressor) - really amazed at how much there was
I probably blew too hard though as some dust has gone behind the screen but luckily you cant see it when the screen is on..

  • What software comes with the iMac ??

was going thru the ordering online screen and I can't find what software comes already loaded. Can someone point me to a link or give me a list?
I have heard that Apple offers something besides appleworks for wordprocessing? Is that true. I've never used anything but Apple word processing. Is MSWord offered now?
    thx - Craig

    Hi.
This is the iMac (Flat Panel) forum for G4 iMacs but I'm assuming that you will be purchasing a brand new Intel iMac so will provide details for those instead.
The following list is taken from this page (link)
Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger (includes Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat AV, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Xcode Developer Tools)
iLife ’06 (includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand),
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive*,
    iWork (30-day trial)*,
    Big Bang Board Games,
    Comic Life,
    Omni Outliner,
    Apple Hardware Test
    Front Row
    Photo Booth
    * despite Apple's TV Adverts both Microsoft Office and iWorks are both limited time trials. AppleWorks is still available for sale separately but is not optimized for Intel processors so has a limited life span. Therefore a proper word processor is no longer bundled with the iMac at all. Only the very basic TextEdit will allow you to type letters etc. You'll have to pay extra if you want more; so you could buy Word or Pages. Personally I'd recommend NeoOffice (link) which is a free download and unlike Microsoft Office is Intel native and compatible with Office2007.
    Hope that helps.

  • What's happening with my iMac hard drive?

I was on Disk Utility the other day, and a message was displayed on my screen. It said... "This drive has a hardware problem and cannot be repaired. Back up as much data as possible and replace the disk. See an authorised Apple dealer for more information." This message was referring to my 1TB ST31000528AS internal iMac hard drive. What is causing this problem? Does this have something to do with the fact that BOOTCAMP was installed on my computer? What should I do?
    Thanks in advance.

  • What's wrong with my iMac screen?

It just happened this morning when I woke up, this iMac is only few months old. And I did nothing last night, just edited some photos and watch The Walking Dead with VLC app as usual. Then I fell asleep and these lines just came up in the morning. What is this, is there anything I can do to fix this without bringing it to apple service? If I have to bring it to apple service, is it covered by the warranty?
    Please help.
    Thank you.

If your 90 day free AppleCare telephone support hasn't expired or you have purchase AppleCare then give them a call. If you don't have AppleCare (HIGHLY recommended) then you will need to schlep the machine into an Apple Store to have it looked at by a professional, it is covered by the 1 year warranty. The lines our describing are not visible in your screen shoot so I'll assume they are very fine.
Before you do anything though do some basics such as restarting the machine and resetting the PRAM.

  • What to do with G5 iMac that can't boot

I have a G5 iMac running MacOS 10.5.8, with 1.5GB of RAM. When I turned on the iMac after one week of its being powered down (via Shut Down), it did not reboot, stopping part of the way through the boot sequence. I have since run the Apple Hardware Tests (on the original MacOS 10.4) install DVD, and all hardware tests passed. The iMac came with 10.4 and has since been updated to 10.5.8. I also ran applejack, the hardware tests from DiskWarrior (loaded on the iMac) and TechTool Deluxe, and the iMac passed all hardware tests. However, I can only boot up the iMac in Safe Boot mode. I have tried to boot up from DiskWarrior but get a spinning ball. I have been backing up the iMac with a LaCie external hard drive controlled by Time Machine.
Can I run Restore from Backup from my 10.4 install disk (does that capability exist in 10.4)?
What do you recommend as a way to clean up the problem that is limiting my ability to do a normal start?

Appologies ... I wasn't aware of the 'answering' of posts. (I can now see that stars and other symbols have meaning and noticed the wording at the top of the post).
As there was no response to your sugguestion I assumed that the problem persisted... and it seemed to me to be a suitable place to ask a 'what if that doesn't work' question.
I have previously posted about my problem but didn't really get anywhere (although I have tried a number of things). I have a back injury at the moment that unfortunately regularly limits my mobility and my ability to use a computer... therefore the momentum of my previous post on the subject was lost.

If within 14 days of delivery, exchange it or return it for a refund. Otherwise take it in for warranty service.

  • What's wrong with my iMac??

I recently downloaded Mountain Lion on my late 2009 iMac. Now it is incredibly slow! I have heard that it may have something to do with the age of my computer and not being able to handle the load. Is this the case and how do I fix it? I love the new features of Mountain Lion but can stand the speed. (I had Snow Leopard before the upgrade.)

  • HT204364 What printers work with the iMac?

Hi I am trying to find a printer that has print, copy, scan and fax that is compatiable with my I mac?

Nearly all "all-in-one" or multifunction devices will work with a Mac, but I recommend purchasing one from a company that visibly supports OS X.
Brother, Canon, and Epson are all good choices.
Wireless all-in-one devices are convenient and cost about the same as USB-only ones. Consider AirPrint compatibility for future needs.
Recently I have grown to favor Brother printers over the others. They are inexpensive, their OS X integration is well-implemented, their consumables are reasonably priced, and their technical support is free forever. If you need to call them and explain that you have a Mac, you will immediately receive competent assistance.
I have grown to dislike HP printers, for all the above reasons.
Read user reviews from vendor websites - Amazon is a good place to start, since Amazon lets people write almost anything they want... right, wrong, or completely idiotic.
Read the reviews on the respective manufacturers' websites as well, but consider the likelihood of them deleting negative reviews.
Process all those user reviews employing your own common sense, and draw your own conclusions.

  • Need help with my iMac ... it keeps freezing up on me no matter what I do.

    Hello all,
I need help to figure out why my iMac keeps on freezing up on me. I used to have Norton SystemWorks installed but I recently uninstalled it because I found out it was poison to Mac OS X. I've used Memtest to check the memory in my iMac. The result of the test came up fine.
You can go to 'Cooling fans for iMac?' (one of my post) to read all of the solutions I have tries out. This post is the original post to try to fix the problem but it FAILED.
In the last week, I've backed up all of my data to my external hard drive. Then I totally erase my internal hard drive and made sure to zero out the drive. After, I proceeded to install Mac OS 9. I had some problems installing the system at first. I finally installed Mac OS 9 and upgraded it to the latest version of 9. Next, I tried to install Mac OS X 10.3 with difficulty. I then finally installed it. I notice during and after installing the both OSs, my iMac keep on freezing. After I installed Mac OS X 10.3, I updated the OS. And yes, while updating the OS, I've experience the same problem as before. I now have my system back to where it was before I did a fresh install of both Mac OS 9 and X.
You guest it, my iMac is still freezing up on me no matter what I do. Can someone please help me with this problem? Can he/she tell me what is going on with my iMac and how to fix it? All the help I can get would be appreciated. Thanks for you time and effort.
P.S. After trying all of the previous suggestions from other users, I came to an conclusion that one of the hardware in my iMac my be failing. I know for curtain it is NOT my memory. It my be something else inside my iMac.

    Rainbow -
I've read the thread you linked to above and the only thing I find missing in the saga is any mention of the PRAM battery. If it is depleted (and it would be getting close to depletion if it has never been replaced) it could be causing your problem.
Do you see any strangeness in the time or date displays? That would be a sure sign that the battery is dying. I haven't run into the problem of a bad battery causing constant freezing but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
As far as temperature effects, the usual pattern of overheating would be a shutdown of the whole computer, a designed-in precaution.
Forgive the battery tutorial if you've already dealt with that possibility.

  • I want to get my parents setup with an imac and iPad.  They are elderly and we live in different countries.  I want to know what solution exists so I can be the remote administrator to maintain and keep them up and running .. I dont want anything fancy.

I would like to setup my eldery parents with an imac and ipad which I know will greatly help them in their daily life.  The technology they love to play with whenever I visit, but they can never keep anything running or sync'ed unless I am around.  Medical and other issues make this a real challenge for them.  Unfortunately, I live in a different country and see them maybe once per year.  I'm surrounded my apple products but never tried remote administration and wondered what I would need (software and hardware) to make this noble venture sucessful.  Anyone out there has some experience or recommendations?  I'm looking for something that is simple and reliable to implement ...

    JokerGirl,
This is Scott J, I work for Intel and wanted to try and help you out. Sorry to hear about your current PC and your knee!
I agree with the bigger screen. I have the Samsung ATIV Smart PC with a screen 11.6" which is great to watch shows/movies!  anything bigger is almost too big for a tablet (personal opinion).
Yes, most if not all tablets will have speakers and a headphone jack
    You can watch YouTube
Only certain models have keyboards, you will want to specify this when making a purchase. Note: most keyboards are sold separately.
Covers are usually pretty easy to come buy, as well as screen protectors (clear plastic that covers and protects your screen from scratches, etc.)
Depending on the Operating System (Windows, Android, etc.) you will have access to an app store where you can buy and download content. Alternatively you can access your favorite sites to read news, get books, magazines, etc.
Hooking things to your tablet - different tablets will have different ports (USB, HDMI, etc.) Question to ask prior to making a purchase as some do not have ports (iPad). Back to my Samsung, I have several ports and do hook it to my TV
Tablets can run anywhere from $150-$1,000.  The mid-range $400-$700 should fulfill all of your needs above and more!
