What is "wheel" in Sharing & Permissions?

In the Sharing & Permissions section of the info dialogue on my Lightroom 4 application, "admin" has been replaced by "wheel" in the names list. This isn't the case in any other application, including an earlier version of Lightroom. What is "wheel", why is Admin missing and is it wise to add it?
I'm not sure if this is connected, but I am also unable to select a label for the same application. Can someone explain what is going on here?

Yes, if the installer set wheel to read only then it is fine. Actually, the executable bit is also set. You don't see that under Sharing and Permissions.
Should I change the permissions to read & write?
No
The only name listed for read & write is "system". I am the owner and sole user of my Mac.
Well, the operating system has many users that run different processes. You may be the sole login user but you are not alone.

This is a *NIX thing, by the way.
When I started fooling around with Linux back in the late 1990s as a hobbyist, I took my old i486 box and put Red Hat 7 on it. I've always spent a lot of time in the command line when using Linux (it's BASH, just like OS X) and that's one of the first things I remember thinking: "*** is WHEEL???"
Luckily there was this Internet thing. I asked, they answered.
*NIX-nerds are notoriously ironic - my favorite example is the "recursive naming" tradition like GNU ("GNU's Not Unix") - and you find little acerbic witticisms all through their userspace.
WHEEL is a group that provides higher admin privileges on the *NIX system.
There is this sacrilegious attitude toward EVER logging on directly as ROOT, and so they invent all sorts of sub-superuser privileged classes like that.
(CONFESSION: I've fooled around with running a personal Linux server for 15 years now, and have probably spent 80% of the time logged on as ROOT. I have yet to screw anything up that couldn't be fixed. Knock on silicon).

Help required -- deleted system/wheel from sharing and permissions

So I just did a big clean up on my hard drive of old files, and wanted to see how much space I now have left on my HD - I right-clicked on Macintosh HD > Get Info.
Under Sharing & Permissions I noticed a strange User listed named "wheels". Afraid that someone had accessed my computer or was somehow sharing on my network, I went ahead like an idiot and deleted the "wheels" user without first researching what it was all about.
Now I cannot boot, nor can I reinstall my OS because it says permission is denied.
I really don't know what to do at this point, I am hoping that there is a command in terminal that can undo deleting wheel/system.
I would very much appreciate the assistance, i'm starting to go a little batty.

I just did the same thing and went to the Apple store to talk to the geniuses. I don't see any updates to your post but hopefully you were able to figure it out. Just in case and for future people who do the same thing, force power off the computer. Power back on while holding down the option key. In Mountain Lion, this should now give you a screen with your main hard drive and a small partition that contains a backup of the OS. There is also a network dropdown and you should log in so you have internet access. Then select the OS backup partition and essentially reinstall the operating system. The reinstall should keep everything on your hard drive intact just like if you were upgrading the OS from an old version.

Sharing, Permissions, and the Spinning Wheel of Death

Yesterday, I goofed when changing Sharing & Permissions on folders in another Profile's Home folder. My account is an admin account. I clicked "Apply to Enclosed Items..." and while I thought I had selected the correct Profile, I must have in fact selected "Users", so soon I began to get permissions errors in my Profile for iTunes, Mail, etc.
I could still log in to all accounts, but each got permission errors.
I was able to resolve the permissions issue for my Profile, but it persists for other Profiles.
When I open the "Info" editor and unlock the padlock, I get the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) when I click the "+" to pull up the Users list.
It does not matter which Profile I am in.
I am running OS X Mavericks v10.9.1 on a 27" iMac.
How can I deal with this problem so that I will get the Users list instead of the SWOD when i click the "+" so that i can add my admin User account and give it Read & Write control?

What are 'Wheel' and Everyone' accounts?

Following an upgrade to leopard from panther, I used the "Reset Password" item on the "Utilities" menu of the Leopard install disk to reset all my ACLs to their default values. I did this to (successfully) resolve an issue with not being able to trash anything without using a password.
I now have two pseudo-accounts (meaning that they don't appear in the Accounts control panel) in the Info pane Sharing and Permissions section for my Home folder and sub-folders. These are "Wheel" and "Everyone". What are these? All I want is Read/Write access for myself and Read Only permission for my network connected laptop (for which I have created a Sharing account). Nobody else should be on my computer, but if they are I don't want them to have any access at all.
Can I remove these two entities from the Sharing & Permissions, or should I just set them to No Access? What are the implications of these two alternatives?

interesting. I wonder how you managed to loose those "deny delete" ACLs on your home folder.
As to whether or not it will cause problems... Those ACls weren't there prior to leopard and were put in to make sure users didn't delete their vital folders by accident. However, this was done rather badly because this particular ACE is invisible from Finder and people clicking the "apply to enclosed items" button unwittingly propagate it with unpleasant results.
It's up to you if you want those ACLs or not. The system will function perfectly well without them but there will remain a chance that you can accidentally delete your desktop or documents folder for example.
To restore the ACLs follow these instructions:
run the following commands (they are in bold) in terminal to set things right.
*chmod -R -N ~*
this removes all ACLs from files in your home directory.
The following two commands put the necessary ACLs back where they belong.
*chmod +a "everyone deny delete" ~/ ~/Desktop ~/Documents ~/Downloads ~/Library ~/Movies ~/Music ~/Pictures ~/Public ~/Sites*
*chmod +a "`id -un` allow list,addfile,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr, writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,chown,file_inherit,directoryinherit" ~/Public/Drop\ Box*

I deleted "Staff" from "Sharing & Permissions"....

I tried searching around but was unable to find an answer. It seemed most other similar problems related to a migrated account from Tiger to Leopard which was not the case for me. Not only that but most of those posts seemed really complicated and hard to read.
When I right click on the folder and "get info" the "staff" option is missing from the "sharing & Permissions" section.
If I go to the system preferences pane under shaing on this particular folder the missing item is called "Users". I know I deleted it, just wondering how to put it back. Clicking on the little + sign under Users does not work.
This seems to be the reason that I can not see this folder in SMB shares because all my other shared folders have the "staff" / "Users" and show up on my PC SMB shares just fine. Please help me correct this permission.

Deleting User/Groups in Info/Sharing&Permissions

Recently duplicated original start-up drive using CarbonCopyCloner. Hadn't noticed before but a "wheel" group showed up under Sharing & Permissions in the Get Info window with "Read only" permissions. Also have (unknown) user with "Read & Write" permissions. Only myself and guest shows in Accounts pref pane. Have repaired permissions in Disk Utility on all my drives. Obviously, I'd like only myself to have permissions on my Mac. Can I just delete the names in the Get Info window without any consequences? Is there a more appropriate way to make myself the only user on account?

OK, I think I have this figured out. My terminal skills aren't all that, but using man dscl I figured out how to manipulate this database to do what I want...
First used this to see what was in the database of usernames/groups:
sudo dscl . list /groups
Found offending entries not wanted (username, _unknown, etc) and removed like so:
sudo dscl . delete /groups/(name to remove)
Did same for user accounts:
sudo dscl . list /users
sudo dscl . delete /users/(names)
Seems to have worked to get rid of weird entries like _unknown and "nobody".. BUT Finder still includes this weird "(unknown)" with read permissions on every new file... What gives?
So what I see in the database for users right now is thus:

Where is (nobody) coming from then and why can't I delete it in file permissions (or even change its permissions to "NoAccess")... This is really problematic for me. I definitely am not understanding something here about permissions and where they come from..

Sharing & Permissions broken?

I've seen a few posts claiming the Sharing & Permissions box in the Info window in Finder is a mess, but I couldn't see anything matching my exact problem...
I've logged into a network account on an OS X (Leopard) Server with a Snow Leopard client. (The problem also occurs with a Leopard client.)
Then I create a new folder in my home folder and open the Info window for the new folder.
In Sharing & Permissions, I select the 'group' row and try to remove it. I get an error saying the operation can't be completed because I don't have the necessary permission. (Leopard tells me it's error -50, whatever that is.)
However, if I just do "chmod go= the-folder" in a Terminal window to remove group and other permissions (with the Info window still open), the group line disappears! And "chmod go=rx" brings it back.
So it would seem I do have permission for what I want to do!
I'm trying to write some instructions for users in the office as to how to change their file permissions. Some people aren't command line oriented so using the Finder would have been nice.
Should I just chalk this one down to the broken Sharing & Permissions window again?

this is a bug (I reported it a while back) but not many people have noticed it. try this. unlock the lock at the bottom in the permissions panel with an admin password and THEN remove the group. it will let you. however, now try
ls -lae the-folder
look at the group. it has changed to wheel!! so what happens when you try to remove the group via GUI is that it does not only try to change the group permissions to 0 it also tries to change the group to wheel (GID=0).
that's why it barfs originally. you don't belong to wheel and you need an admin password to do chgrp.
this is of course absurd and is clearly a bug. it has been around since leopard.
so don't use GUI to remove group access. use terminal.

Problem with File Sharing-Permissions throughout Folders

I'm having an odd problem when setting up a Mac Pro with File Sharing. I have a second Hard Drive in it which is a Server Drive to be shared as a networked Hard Drive for both my MBP and my Fiancee's MBP. Here is the problem I have.
I set up File Sharing and set up both her ID and my ID. Since this is done she is able to get to drive from my MBP and she is able to get to the drive from her MBP. I am able to read or write to those folders. She is able to view them but is unable to write to them.
I went to the Server Drive icon on the Mac Pro's Desktop. When I right click and do "Get Info" and select Sharing I can tell her ID is not listed on any of the Folders. She is listed as Read and Write for the entire Hard Drive (which is an internal drive). I am also listed as Read and WRite and then it lists Everyone and says No Access. The same is listed in System Preferences in File Sharing. I have heard this Everyone 'No Access' can cause problems but I prefer not to give access to everyone. The only other option is Read Only and Read and Write. Also, when I have Everyone selected the - sign is greyed out so I'm unable to remove Everyone.
To continue, what is strange is I thought with it saying on the Server Drive itself for my Fiancee, read & write, that it would say this on every Folder inside. Yet when I select any Folder inside on the Server Drive and select Get Info it says for me "Read & Write" and for Staff "Read Only" and for Everyone "Read only" I'm not even sure where Staff comes fro and of course Everyone is Read Only and my Fiancee not even listed. It just seems that these file sharing permissions are not replicated througout all the Folders when I select it for the Hard Drive itself. What could be causing this and how can I get the same to go throughout the Folders? I know manually I could change them all but this would take a long time and likely still be a problem when any additional Folders are added.

1. I have turned logged into it from my MBP while at Home and if I'm logged in as Guest I only see the Server Drive which is good. My concern is that if I log in with my login I then sell all Folders including the Main 'Macintosh HD' At least as a guest I can only see the Server Drive but is it any way I can stop it from showing all the other folders on the computer since I have no reason to do that?
When you login to a mac as an administrator it is normal to see all the contents of the volumes connected to that mac.
2. Also, I would like to disable all access for Guest. Yet I have it list Everyone or Guest in the file sharing and I have no way of deleting this. I don't want a Guest to be able to connect to this computer or share any files at all on it. Is there any way to disable this?
Goto system preferernces-->accounts
click on the lock to and enter your password to unlock the preference pane.
Then select the guest account. Then uncheck the 2 check boxes. The account should now have 'disabled' underneath it.
3. Security: How secure is this? I am using it on a Home Wi-Fi network with an Airport Base Station 1GB. I have the Leopard filewall set to "Set Access for Specific Services" since it won't work with "Allow only essential services" I hope my home network is more security but with Back to my Mac how hard would it be for someone to be able to find this computer on the network? I don't do any filesharing on my MBP but do have it set up for File Sharing but only with my login ID.
If you have your base station set to distribute ip addresses then it is acting as a NAT router and will firewall you.
I have not setup back to my mac yet so can't comment on its security. Although I would suggest a strong password.

My method of remote access is to use SSH and run screen sharing over an SSH tunnel.

File Sharing permissions

I have 2 iBooks in the same office. They are set for file sharing. I have trouble moving files from one computer to the other. Always get the message that I don't have the proper permissions. How does one resolve this problem - so that all files can be easily moved from one computer to the other?

Not sure what folders you['re trying to copy/move from/to.
Go get SharePoints from , http://www.hornware.com
Install on both macs.
Configure shared folders & permissions using this fine utility.
(sharepoints app manages the samba server files that regulate sharing permissions. It's a GUI view into the smb.conf setup)

Having Problems With Sharing & Permissions in Finder

I am using a Mac Mini (mid-2011) running Lion Server 10.7.4.
I have noticed lately that when I check files the Sharing & Permissions portion using Get Info on my files I find that there are two lines for each user on my compuer. The first set of lines says Read & Write which I actually selected. The second set of lines says Custom. When I check I have the list Read & Write, Read, Custom. When I try to change Custom I cam select new option No Privileges Info. For the other users I am able to delete the extra line once I select No Privileges Info. However even though I have more than one line I cannot delete the extra line for the main user. I will try and delete the extra line for the main user logged in as someone else that has what I have defined as admin privileges (reason I have more than one user).
This really concerns me because this issue is causing problems with me adding or removing files as needed in the terminal. When I try I get this funky error:
Dubious permissions on file (skipping): filename with duplicate entries for a user.
This is happening more and more even though I am not changing the file permissions that I am aware of.
Any help would be appreciated.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the Recovery screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

Admin username and Home Sharing & Permissions name don't match

When I originally installed the OS on my iMac and MacBook, since I entered my full first and last names, that became my Admin user name. While attempting to address a 10.5.6 upgrade problem [below fyi], I used Accounts Preference on both to change to Jim (Me). This didn't solve the problem and, wanting to type less, I changed both to just Me. However, now when I Get Info on my Home directory and examine Sharing & Permissions, it still lists Jim (Me). Why didn't that change? Can I change it? Does it matter?
My problem: After "upgrading" to 10.5.6, I can't "see" my Home directory on either Mac when connecting via AirPort or Firewire. On both machines, I have set prefs so the Home directory is shared. I select the Shared file server in the Finder. (Oddly enough, the default name that appears when I attempt to connect is just Jim and, no matter what I enter, the next time I try to connect, it defaults to Jim.) Anyway, I enter my username and password. I see the home directory of that Mac as well as the other Mac. I select the other Mac but the only User directory that appears is the Shared directory -- my Home directory doesn't appear. (It did under 10.5.5 so I'm stymied.)

To fix this (so my files would show) I used NetInfo Manager to change the admin and user values.
If you change the name(not home) property of an administrator account without updating the membership of the admin group, that account will lose administrator access to the machine; it is possible to create a situation where there are no administrator accounts on the machine through this method. In this case, follow these instructions on one of the accounts which previously had administrator access.

Sharing & permissions won't unlock

After updating my wife's Mini to 10.9, I created a shared folder on the hard drive. I ported over 40 GB of image files across the local network to the new folder, then tried to open them. No luck -- permissions problem. So I tried changing permissions on the folder, but for the first time ever, the system wouldn't unlock the sharing & permissions pane. Clicking the lock icon does nothing -- no authentication window, nada.
Has anyone else experienced this?

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-C, or select
Go ▹ Computer
from the menu bar. A window will open showing all mounted volumes. Select the one in question and open the Info window. What is shown as the Format in the General section?

GLOBAL editing for Sharing & Permissions

I have a 1.5TB Volume (Data Only - non startup) that contains hundreds of folders, that contain thousands of files - some to many of which have Permissions set to "READ ONLY".
I want to copy the contents of this 1.5TB HD to a 2TB HD - as I have run out of space....however - I get countless errors due to what I believe are those permissions being set to READ ONLY.
Is there a way - globally - to set the Sharing & Permissions of every single file, in a folder - and/or every single folder in a volume - ALL at once?

Do a Finder -> Get Info on one of those top-level folders, unlock the lock at the bottom of the "Get Info" window, then set the "sharing * Permissions" to what you want. Then pull down on the "gear" menu at the bottom, and select the option to "Apply to enclosed items".
