What is with all the Flash updates?

Is Flash so buggy it needs to be patched every couple of weeks? Every time I boot my system (about once every week or so) there seems to be a Flash update needed!

Flash Player isn't your typical piece of software.  There are very few programs on your computer that process inherently untrusted content.  It's basically Flash Player and your web browser.  They run code that other people write, and due to the nature of the web, run code that may be constructed by a malicious attacker.
Like the major browsers, Flash Player in on a pretty fast, regular update cadence.  This ensures that new security work and functional fixes get to you quickly, and that when a vulnerability is discovered in the wild, that it's fixed and patched in the shortest possible amount of time.  Most current browsers are on a 6-week major release cycle, and Internet Explorer is on a 4-week cycle for alignment with Microsoft Patch Tuesday.  Because we ship everywhere in tandem, we're also aligned with the fastest player, which in this case is Microsoft.
Adobe works with industry, academic and government intelligence and research to proactively identify potential vulnerabilities and harden the player based on emerging research and intelligence.  Both Flash Player and JavaScript are powered by purpose-built virtual machines and just-in-time compilers.  There's a tremendous amount of investment being made on offensive research in this area, and Adobe works closely with the small cadre of experts in the industry (Microsoft, Google, Mozilla, etc) to both share intelligence and deploy emerging best practices to the extent possible.  They're very complex and challenging computer science problems.  Flash Player source is regularly reviewed and audited by the best researchers in the field, and we're continually finding new ways to harden the player against new attacks while balancing performance and real-world requirements.
So, you get a monthly Flash Player update which includes functional patches and security changes, and in the event that we or our extensive network of industry partners discovers something being abused in the field, we'll release additional out-of-cycle patches to address those issues quickly and responsibly.
If you don't want to deal with Flash Player updates, there are a couple options available to you:
1.) Enable Automatic Updates - Go to Control Panel > Flash Player > Advanced > Allow Adobe to install updatesYou'll still get a quarterly update that requires manual installation, but all of the intermediate updates, including any emergency patches will get downloaded and applied automatically
2.) Use Google Chrome (on any platform) or Internet Explorer on Win8+
Both browsers include Flash Player as a built-in component of the browser, and Flash updates are distributed automatically through the browser's update system (or Windows Update, respectively)
There's nothing separate that you ever need to download or manage.  It's just handled by the browser's pipeline.

Sorry to say your installation must have been unsuccessful.
A normal installation would not do this.
Uninstall, run the cleanscript* and try again (maybe your AV is too agressive).

  • What's with all the indie games

so lately ive noticed that most all the free games on ps+ have become indie games while they used to be high quality shooters like crysis and they had theif but now they had a game called unfinished swan and it was terrible they should have called it unfinished game but i think the reason for this is because ps4 users have to have ps+ to play online and while thats fine because they have to pay for servers and other stuff like that and its only fair to give back. i feel lucky i bought a ps3 instead of an xbox because the online was free. but i mean we pay millions to ps+ now, weve done our part now sony needs to stop holding us hostage to ps+ or pay us back in some other way than these crappy indie games there giving us now

Excellent, a new "what's with all the indie games" thread!

My Mac book pro keeps saying "connection time out occurred" I have a 2011 pro with all the latest updates. It keeps doing it and it really annoys me! Please help!

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts.
    Step 4
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 5
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

  • What's with all the --force-ing?

The recent and somehow-still-ongoing glibc debacle has revealed more than ever that a good number of users actually use Pacman's --force flag even though it's repeatedly advised against pretty much everywhere on the archlinux.org domain. I'm just curious...are there other common Linux package managers (or other software) that encourage the use of --force such that they might lull new Pacman users into a false sense of security in performing it? Other systems with which it is not uncommon to use --force? I just find the whole situation a bit surprising.
Is there any other way to convince these users that --force is *not* ok unless the devs recommend it, without resorting to hand-holding?
(sorry, not sure if this belongs in Arch or GNU/Linux Discussion, feel free to move it mods)

It reminds me of an old joke:
A young executive was leaving the office late one evening when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.
"Listen," said the CEO, "this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?"
"Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.
"Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine.
    "I just need one copy."

  • IPod Not being recognized with all the software updates

I've been without my iPod for a few weeks now and I desperately want it back. I dropped it a while back, and have come online to look up stuff to restore it, but none of that is working for me. I reset it by pressing "menu" and "Play" at the same time, then put it into disk mode by pressing the "ff" and "rwd" buttons together, but even in disk mode my computer is not recognizing it at all. The iPod screen says that it is in disk mode, and says it's okay to disconnect, but its not giving me the option to restore when I connect it to my computer and open the iPod updater.
It also gives me the file folder w/ an exclamation point whenever i don't put it into disk mode. And the few times that my computer does pick up something the iPod updater flashes a message that says "Can't Mount iPod" and then the updater manually closes itself. Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
20GB with Dock Connector   Windows XP

For "Cant mount iPod" - please try the following first
    Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
If still cant solve it then
The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • ICS - what's with all the backward stuff?

In the email app, the trash can switches from left to right depending whether you're looking at a message list or an individual message.
If you start to compose an email and abandon it, "OK" is on the right and "Cancel" is on the left - the opposite of how it used to be, and of every other software I've ever seen.
When answering the phone, the position of red and green buttons is reversed depending whether the screen is locked when the call comes in.
No consistency at all. What gives?

Yes, but my question is why? I'm hoping someone intelligent from Verizon reads these boards and will realize how stupid these particular changes were before the next update.
You have to remember that the main OS functions DO NOT come from Verizon, they come from Google. They setup the OS, so these "Gesture Changes" came from them. They are trying to align it with their Tablet market so there is 1 build of an OS for phone and tablet.
I'm sorry that you do not like these changes, but it makes it interesting learning the subtle differences....

  • What's with all the Data?

Hello everyone, my Dell Inspirion 1521 laptop with 136gigs of disk space seems to only have 25.3 gigs free. This is strange because all the programs that show up under "Programs and Features" only add up to about 7gigs and all the folders in my OS (C disk only add up to a few gigabites of data! Somewhere on my computer there must be something taking up all that space but it seems that Microsoft doesn't want me to know about it xD. Any advice on how to get rid of useless files and needless windows "updates" would be great, thanks!

This question was asked before several times on Dell's community with that model , try searching the Dell Community Forums for the answer, otherwise what do spyware and antivirus scans produce?

  • What happened to all the Android update doc pages?

Toshiba had some great pages with software update histories for all the important tablet devices, such as the Thrives and Excites. As of today they're all gone.
Will there be replacements for them, or perhaps a forum post we could subscribe to with per-device updates?
    Here are some examples:
    Thrive 7: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletinDetail.jsp?pf=true&soid=3312005
    Thrive: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletinDetail.jsp?pf=true&soid=3217256
    Excite 10: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletinDetail.jsp?pf=true&soid=3420308
    and others.

I'll bookmark this to come back and put them in this thread later. However, I'll explain how to get to them as well.
From the support site, you now type a model name in the box, select it from the list (or continue typing the whole number and click GO).
For example, type "Thrive AT1S5-T16" in the box and click GO to see the Thrive 7". On that page, click "Knowledge Base" to view what used to be called "support bulletins." You can filter using the terms on the left and see results on the right. In fact, I see the system updates article there now. "Thrive 7 Tablet System Image Updates" is listed on the right. Click it to view the article.
Now, what's a little trickier. If you copy the URL from the address bar and then use it later, it'll just take you to the landing page for that Thrive, not the particular article.
Here's one direct link to an article:
Thrive™ 7” Tablet System Image Updates
I'll return with the others when I have the links. They all seem to be up on the site right now, but I'm waiting to find the direct links.

No: Firmware Updates are rather unusual and operate differently to the normal software updates. They require a special procedure which is documented with the update. But even the normal software updates require the Installer to run: however Software Update will take care of that for you if you let it. You certainly won't need to go looking for the normal Installer.
In your specific case, the page for MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1 tells you:
To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update.app). The updater will launch automatically when the Installer closes.

Your posts do not warrant any response. You probably work for Verizon....   There are numerous posts out there about people standing up for what they want, and carriers have listened to them and delivered. Other phones that were not scheduled to get the Froyo update were given the update because they complained to their provider. The American way is about people standing up for what they believe in, to question the people in charge, and to take a stand when it is necessary. It is also the American way if they choose not to, but they would have no complaint either way. People are just tired of being lied to. I was in a Verizon store just the other day and the salesman are STILL TELLING PEOPLE THAT FROYO FOR THE FASCINATE WILL BE OUT SOON, just to make the sale.  Should they not be held to their words?
You need not go around posting that people are gutless fools for doing something that they belive in. Where would we be today if this type of activity was not taken in our past?

  • What's with all the "name"s-short, long, user, computer?

I'm a long time Mac user but not lots of experience with multiple user accounts.
Trying to migrate from MB with one account to MBA; on about the 7th or 10th erase & install. Various methods of getting the data over are not working.
I'd like to have a new "home" account name, but the more I read the more confused I'm getting-there are so many different "name"s in the sharing/accounts windows I'm not sure if they are variations of each other or all different. Is there a table somewhere that tells the meaning of/difference among
    short name
    long name
    home folder name
    computer name
    user name
    account name
    etc?
Apparently I can't migrate MB=MBA into a new short name, so have to do some trickery with advanced settings, or migrate then make a new account, drag/copy/from then delete the old account. What junk!
You'd a thunk Apple would know people would want to migrate a home folder to new machine and change the name of it along the way.
Phew. Not impressed so far with the ease of transition to MBA. 3 days in the works now.

Please look over http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html towards the bottom where he discusses that. Once you have the data moved into the account you want you can remove the account you don't want by using the System Preferences - Users & Account. The remaining account must be an administrators account though.

  • If Macs "just work"...what's with all the posts??

I've been thinking of making the switch to a 24inch imac...I've been doing alot of research and stumbled across the forums here. I gotta say I was pretty shocked to see the amount of issues people are having and also the amount of people viewing some of these problems. I'm by no means naive enough to think that ALL Macs are perfect and I realize this forum only represents a portion of Mac users, but its making me a little hesitent. I'd hate to spend all that money and end up with a great looking machine that doesn't work...if that were the case, would'nt I just get another PC? Should I be worried about making the switch??
    Thanks in advance

Coming here to get an opinion about issues people are having with their Macs is kind of like going to a hospital to concluding that the entire human race is sick.
I have been using Macs a long time and have also am using a Dell PC and have used some other PC"s in the past. I have to say that the Mac operating system just seems to not get in my way as much as Windows, which is what most PC's use. I have also, based on my experiences and not on any empirical data, found that it seems to be much easier for the end user to troubleshoot problems on a Mac, compared to a PC. The Macs do seem to "just work".
I don't know of anyone who has made the switch and regretted it, but I guess it could and probably has happened.
Think about the type of things you do with your computer and the software you use and like and then make sure that whichever type you choose, it meets your needs.
Where I work I have both a Mac and a PC. I have to have the PC to do two things. First to run my security cameras. I could not find a Mac program that would do what I want with the cameras. Second, to run our fueling system. There simply was no Mac equivalent for that function. I do everything else, databases, spreadsheets, etc. on my Mac.
