What is X11, and why does it now appear when I launch a window in Terminal?

I just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. I use Terminal to log-in via SSH to my website etc. What is this X11 thing that launches now every time I try to connect via SSH? I never saw this before in Tiger...

Stephen,
From the terminal do:
*mkdir -p ~/.ssh*
*vi ~/.ssh/config*
In that file put
<pre>
Host *
Protocol 2
ForwardX11 no
ForwardAgent no
UseRsh no
FallBackToRsh no
</pre>
This defensive ssh client configuration (*man ssh_config* if you want to learn more) says that I will connect using only SSH v2 (recommended), I will not forward an X11 session or my SSH agent. I will not use RSH under any circumstances.
Of course command line options override the config all the time.

  • What is X11 and Why does GIMP require it

    Hello all,
I use GIMP at work on a Windows workstation, and love it.  I have just downloaded the mac version but on boot up it prompts me to locate the 'X11'.
    What is X11?
    where is it located?
    and
Why does GIMP need it so badly?
    Thanking you all in advance

If I recall X11 is an optional install on your installer dvd's.  I don't remember if it's a option on the main install or an addition on the second dvd.
When it gets installed the X11 app will be in your /Applications/Utilities folder.  There is also additional stuff the app needs in other directories on your boot drive as well.
As for what X11 is, here's a wiki reference.  Basically the mac version of gimp needs x11 as it's windowing layer (probably the easiest way to port gimp to the mac).

  • Android.process.acore?  What is this and why does it keep not working?

Help: I've had my Lucid 3 phone since May and this phone has been the most confusing thing to operate.  I'm currently having three (3) issues:
The Wi-Fi is not working...I keep getting the symbol refreshing.  I can't turn the Wi-Fi on or off.  I read "Turning Wi-Fi on..." when I go to the setting for Wi-Fi but this has been going on for 3 hours.  C'mon!  My Wi-Fi at home is working great; that's how I'm writing this post. Help!
To add to the misery: I keep getting a pop-up notification that reads: "Unfortunately, the android.process.acore has stopped."  What is this and why does it not work. The phone's been getting this message for a week now...help!
Last concern: I'm still not getting multimedia texts (particularly pictures).  The data and Wi-Fi were on...well, that's when the Wi-Fi was working (please refer to complaint #1 above).  What the heck?
This phone is terrible news and I can't wait to replace it.  In the meantime, the phone needs to work. Help.
    -Salo

We certainly want to clear up all the confusion and have a working phone in your hands, srodezno. Let's take this one issue at a time:
    1. How long ago did this trouble with WiFi start? Are you able to connect to any alternate WiFi signals other than the one at home?
    2. Do you get that notification when you access anything in particular? Did it begin when you updated or installed any application?
    3. Are you still able to access other data services (web, apps, Play Store, etc) while the WiFi is off/not working? Are you able to send the MMS messages?

What is "Other" and why does it take up so much space?

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • What is "ndat", and why does it want to connect to 0.0.0.0 on DIVERT port?

Whenever I connect to any wireless hotspot, LittleSnitch (a program that reports any ingoing/outgoing connections) says: "ndat wants to connect to 0.0.0.0 on DIVERT port 2560 (labrat)". If I click "allow" the connection works fine, if I deny the connection, the internet doesn't work. Does anybody have any idea what this is?
I just want to make sure I'm not inadvertently allowing my data to go through some connection and be vulnerable, etc.

I thought about that, but all that LittleSnitch does is report ingoing/outgoing communications. It doesn't create any. So I'm just trying to figure out what a program called "ndat" does, and what 0.0.0.0 on DIVERT port 2560 (labrat) means.
Has anyone heard of any of these things on OSX?

Did some malicious software sneak its way onto my macbook?

  • Why does Yahoo Search appear when I open a new tab, when Google is my default homepage?

Ever since I upgraded to 4.0, when I open a new tab the yahoo search page appears, but my homepage is www.google.com.
I have three tabs open at all times on my main foxfire window and always ask to restore them: Yahoo mail (my account), www.imdb.com, and http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/. Anytime I open a new tab http://search.yahoo.com/?fr=freeze&type=W3i_NA,132,3_6,Tab%20Search,20110104,6894,0,16,0 appears, but my default homepage is set to www.google.com.
Interestingly, when I open a new window for firefox my default homepage of www.google.com appears, but http://search.yahoo.com/?fr=freeze&type=W3i_NA,132,3_6,Tab%20Search,20110104,6894,0,16,0 appears when I open new tabs.
    Why????
Very annoying, but the highest of priorities.
    Thanks.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

  • Why does Illustrator CC crash when opening files from Windows 7 64x file manager?

This does not happen with any of my ogher CC applications; and the files open just fine when opening from directly within Illustrator. It doesn't matter if it is an AI, EPS, or PDF file. The program just crashes. What I thought was a glitch a few months ago, seems to keep happening, and despite at least one (1) update, it still isn't fixed.
Am I the only one having this problem? Thankfully, Illustrator is about the least used of my programs so I'm not ready to pull out my hair just yet.

    UPDATE:
I have since updated all of my CC applications to 2014, and this issue has ceased. I am marking this issue as answered, but it is not truly resolved.

  • What is "safaritools" and why does it want access to my account?

I'm having Safari 4.0.3 crashes on PowerBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11 -- like everyone else.
But, I've also been getting this strange popup every now and then -- it looks like a regular Apple popup --- that asks for access to the account manager or keychain (Deny, Allow Once, Allow Always). It is called "safaritools" small case, combined word. Says something like "safaritools wants permission to access..." and I think it want account manager (sorry I should have taken a screen shot).
Does anyone know what this? Is this part of the new Safari upgrade? Or is it a Trojan or other malware?
If so, what the heck does it do and should I Deny, Allow Once or Allow Always?
thanks for any help --- and assurances!
Apple needs to unbug Safari fast. At least (knocking wood on my head) my IPhone Safari runs great -- for now!

    Hi,
I'm having Safari 4.0.3 crashes on PowerBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11 -- like everyone else.
    Tiger is out dated.
Or is it a Trojan or other malware?
Definably you are a switcher from MS to Apple. You need to know more about the system you running and about Mac general.

  • Exchange password, what is it and why does my phone keep asking for it?

For the last two days, my phone periodically wants me to enter an exchange password.  This is the first I ever heard of it so can't figure out what it is.n I though exchange was a Microsoft product so what's it doing on my Apple iPhone.  I just upgraded the 3GS phone to iCloud.

make sure you don't have 2 step verification in gmail.
    otherwise you need to follow
    Signing in using application-specific passwords
The codes that you’ll get with 2-step verification don’t work with all applications. There are a few applications that use information from your Google Account (like the Gmail application on your phone, or Outlook) that require another type of code. These are called application-specific passwords.
Some devices and applications that use these special passwords include:
POP and IMAP email clients such as Outlook, Mail and Thunderbird
Gmail and Google Calendar on smartphones
ActiveSync for Windows Mobile and iPhone
    YouTube Mobile on Apple devices
    Cloud Print
Installed chat clients such as Google Talk and Adium
3D Warehouse, Sketchup, and installed applications
    AdWords Editor
    Sync for Google Chrome
    Gmail Notifier
How to generate an application-specific password
Unlike a verification code that you receive from your phone or through Google Authenticator, application-specific passwords are generated. You don’t have to memorize them, ever - you simply generate a new one each time you need to sign into a particular application. Follow the steps below to generate your application-specific password:
Visit the Authorizing applications & sites page (pictured below) under your Google Account settings.
Under the Application-specific passwords section, enter a descriptive name for the application (label 1) you want to authorize, such as "AdWords Editor – Desktop," then click “Generate application-specific password" (label 2).
You'll then see the application-specific password you just created (3). You'll also see the name you wrote in for the device (4) and a link to Revoke (5) -- or cancel -- the code.
Once you click Done, you’ll never see that application-specific code again. But don't panic: You can generate a new one whenever you’re prompted for an application-specific password by a non-browser device or application -- even a device or application you’ve authorized before.
    Using application-specific passwords
When prompted for a password when you sign in to a non-browser application or device that accesses your Google Account:
    Enter your username.
Enter your application-specific password in the password field.
If your application has an option to remember your application-specific password or stay signed in, you can select that option so you won’t have to generate and enter a new application-specific password each time you access your account from this application or device.

  • What is "uninstalld" and why does it take up nearly 100% of CPU?

I recently upgraded from 2 to 4GB of RAM because my iMac was running slow. It works better now but my activity monitor shows only 45MB free right now even though I'm only using Safari. In the monitor window it says that "uninstalld" (without the e) is taking up 99.3% of CPU. How can that be and what can I do about it? Thanks.

Select that process and kill it in Activity Monitor, see if it comes back.
