What is your favourite Desktop Environment/Window Manager and why?

I'm using Openbox because it's lightweight and sleek looking. I don't actually need the lightweight-ness since my laptop has very good specs, but I love the speed and the simplicity.

  • What are your experiences in integrating Windows AD and Linux

I got into a job with a domain of about 70 Windows PCs and about 100 Linux machines.
The domains are quite old, and I mean Samba 4 and NIS old. Obviously one wants something newer, as in AD on the Windows side and Kerberos/LDAP on the Linux side. Preferably with a single user-database.
Question to the more experienced members:
    Should I go
    - Windows based and use something like an OpenLDAP Proxy for the Linux-LDAP
    or
    - Samba 4 based AD with the same
    or
    - Any of the above with Linux attributes added to the user entries in LDAP
What are thoughts and experiences on this? Especially is Samba 4 stable enough to be used in a production environment? What experiences with having Linux machines running in AD directly or via LDAP Proxy/Kerberos Proxy?

    1. Thsi contribution is not discussion, it is question. So better category is needed.
    2. Samba forum is better platform for topics llike Samba stability. Your infrastructure is much closer to Linux one.
    3. As you has landed in Windows Server forum, I would recommend using Windows Server 2012 R2. This is stable and reliable. Homogeneous infrastructure brings less headaches that hybrid one.

what is the difference between Desktop Environment & Window Managers?
please answer my simple question, thanks guys!

Exactly because it's a simple question is why you should do a little more effort to answer this one yourself . Google or the forum search will get you a long way - use it please.
Welcome to the forums btw - be sure to read the forum rules . I'm closing this one.

  • What do you value in a window manager?

I have discovered that Metacity (the default window manager for Gnome) has compositing. This compositing is very basic, mostly adding shadows to windows, but it makes the desktop look and feel very nice (at least to me).  I find Compiz-Fusion or just plain Compiz too much, and this very refreshing.  There is how ever some functionality that I find myself missing.  The most notable is the ability to drag windows from one workspace to another.  This got me thinking about what functionality I value in a window manager:
It looks pretty -- Inviting window dressing with shadowing and fading. The transparency effects I never found that interesting.  I have tried Openbox numerous times (played with its themes and everything) and I always find it dull and never used it for long.  This realization came as a bit of a surprise to me, I had no idea that I valued looks so much.
Fast and clear way of browsing and selecting open windows -- I like it when this is not limited to one workspace, but does give distinction between the workspaces.  The window selector in the top right corner of the Gnome desktop or clicking the third button on the desktop in Xfce is prime examples of this.  Also, I like to have the option of doing this with the mouse or keyboard and I am annoyed that Alt Tab is limited to one workspace in most cases.

I am curious as to what functionality or aspects of window managers others value, and would appreciate any feedback.
    Thank you

I value speed and configurability.  Consequently, I use Openbox.

If all you need is shadows/fading, Xcompmgr will work inside Openbox and provide those 'features' (I personally dislike them).

Xfce can set the Alt-Tab window switcher to work on all workspaces (I think).  My favorite option is the Openbox desktop menu (accessible by middle-clicking the desktop), which I have mapped to the desktop button on Pypanel (see attached screenshot).

On Openbox, I just right-click the title bar and select 'Send to desktop...'.  If you require the dragging functionality, most pagers (such as those in the GNOME or Xfce panels) allow you to drag windows.  Bear in mind that more minimal WM's such as the *boxes and Pekwm can run any panel that you want (or no panel at all), so you can bring your GNOME panel along with you.

  • What's your favourite game on the Sony PlayStation?

My favourite game has to be Street Fighter Alpha 3. One of the best beat em up games I ever played! Loved the World Tour mode! Soundtrack and gameplay was top notch. Shame Capcom has no plans for Street Fighter Alpha 4. So what's your favourite game on the Sony PlayStation?

Seems like one of those questions that always gets asked to open a debate but find that everyone has already answered countless times.  Nevermind though, as a newbe I'll give it a go. Not an easy one to answer.  I like Fifa 2002 and of course Grand Turismo 2 plus Driver. Recently found a couple of games in a skip and in our local library about 40 PS1 games in their CD recycling box.  Still trying to find manuals for them.

  • What's your favourite compressor tool?

Although I think Logic Compressor does a fairly nice job and can be useful in many occasions, I'm now looking to expand my dynamics department.
I'd like to know what's your favourite compressor and why?
I quite like the Sonalksis SV-315. what's your opinion on that?
Plus I'm looking for something similar to the Jomeek SC2 Photo Optical Compressor that is available for pro-tools. Any suggestions?
Your help is very much appreciated.

I was about to start a new thread asking about the nomad factory plug ins, but I figured I'd ask it here since it's related and you're already talking on the topic.
so I've been getting into work on my new MBP.. enjoying it so far. one thing I knew I'd miss on this machine was my UAD plugs. I've got the sonalksis plugs which are giving me some reliable eq and dynamics. but I really want more choice than just the logic comp and one other one.. I'm really missing the UAD 1176 and LA2A here.
same goes for EQ and other (ok I'll say it..) 'vintage' sounding effects. I guess quality stuff with character is what I'm after.
so I'm thinking about nomad factory (they seem to have UBs available) and also URS (even though I hate ilok authorized plugs)..
is anyone using this stuff? I have used the URS before and was loving the neve EQs. but have only ever barely used nomad on a friend's setup once years ago. I don't recall thinking it was bad sounding at all, but I was always under the impression it was a little down-market. the prices don't seem all that downmarket to me though..
opinions? thoughts? I'll prob try a couple of demos, but I'd love some feedback too.
btw I'm ruling out waves. I fell off the waves registered user bandwagon back in OS9 days and frankly haven't felt drawn back. do their plug ins still not offer tempo sync, or precise control on exactly what incremental setting you want (for delay in MS, as an example)? and do they still block logic keycommands when their editor is open?

What version of Photoshop is currently available that will work on both the desktop and the laptop? Can I install the same copy of Photoshop on the both machines simultaneously?

You can either buy a CS6 perpetual license, or Creative Cloud subscription.  Both will run on the two computers you mention.  You are allowed two installation with either version, but they must be for the same user. There is a cheap as chips Photography deal that gives you Photoshop and Lightroom for just $10/month, and feature gap is ever widening between CS6 and CC

  • Video-gaming: What's your favourite ever gaming moment/memory?

    Hi guys,
So, this week we've had some great discussions around gaming and today is the last one
What's your favourite ever moment or memory?
For me, it was completing this level of Crash Bandicoot called 'Crash Crush'. You had to run towards the screen while a boulder chased you, as well as dodging emerging pits! It was almost too much for my 9-year old self to handle
What's you favourite gaming moment or memory? Was it was shock twist? A difficult achievement? A funny design? Sound off below!

I have a 2 year old HP Pavilion Elite i7 Desktop w Windows 7 and I desire to add a 3 TB Hard Drive.  Can I add a 3TB Hard Drive (probably the Segate Barracuda XT 3TB HD) as a secondary drive without changes.  If not, what should I do?

    Hi,
Make sure that the power supply unit is powerful enough. It's a desktop so adding a 2 or even 3TB hdd shouldn't be a problem..

  • Favourite file manager and why

What's everyone's favourite file manager, and why? I'm using XFE in Openbox atm, and am impressed, but wonder if there's somthing else out there that's easier to customize/faster/has a better interface.
    Your thoughts?

Konqueror is my favourite. It just has lots of nice little extras. Somebody earlier mentioned the kioslaves, like fish:// and the like, so I can just do fish://HomeServer, and as if by magic I am seamlessly yet securely browsing files on my home network server at my non-university home all the way over in Berkshire, which often comes in handy
The command line has its uses since you can be so specific and yet so general at the same time, allowing you to do some stuff that would be a bit of a pain in Konqueror or whatever, likely involving a lot of Ctrl-clicking and stuff,  but then again it doesn't have cool things like file previews, drag and drop, etc. File previews are really good because sometimes on a bad day you might just make some really bad file naming decisions, and having to open 10 .pdf files to find the one you want is no fun at all

  • Mapping Yamaha DTXplorer in logic pro - Environment window clicks and Ports

The midi signals for Yamaha DTXplorer are off from GM. The snare (G0) and bass drum (A0) output notes do not trigger snare (D1) and bass drum (C1).
I am a novice to both MAC and Logic Pro.
I have the midi out of the drumset going USB right into my MAC.
    I've gotten as far as...
    1. Environment window>clicks and Ports
    2. Verifying the channels that DTX triggers for snare and bass drum.
    3. Changing the output notes to D1 & C1.
    Nothing changes with the sound.
In fact, I can change the output notes for drums that are set up correctly and they don't change either.
None of the alterations I do in the Environment window seem to do anything to the midi signals!
Do I need to activate or save the changes? If so, how (precisely)?
    Thanks in advance.

    You can do that from within the app, under menu Logic Pro X;
    Regards

Firefox 6.0 is the current version.
Get what denoted in what properties link.
You can get the version number in Help -> About Firefox,
and in '''about:support''' typed into the Location bar, and you can use JavaScript to list the user agent -- javascript:navigator.userAgent
I'm not aware of any version of Firefox from Fx 2 on up to Fx 6 where "AVG Safe" is not a problem. Crashes aren't the only failures caused.

  • What does the "i" in "iPod" stand for and why is lowercase?

What does the "i" in "iPod" stand for and why is it lowercase?

I dont know, I think that was pretty funny.
The i first appeared as a prefix for the iMac. As this was the first one to be equipped with the internet it's a pretty safe bet to assume that it stood for 'internet'.
After that it became a bit of a signature for apple and a kind of unofficial trademark and gets used on everything cos apple think it looks trendy.
Although to be fair the iPod does play tunes that you download using the internet, so there is a link i suppose.
I think this is right but will no doubt get some Mac nerd disagreeing.
