What is your MacPro's boot time?

What is your MacPro's boot time ( seconds) from Gong to opening of the user log-in screen?

I actually do not use the signon screen (I am the only user) and Gong to Desktop with Address book and iCal open is about 15 seconds.
It's actually funny that you ask this, as I noticed that in the last 3 weeks, my boot time actually came down to 15 seconds from 25 or so, and this after I restarted Raid on my disks, so it's getting faster... must be the bits getting in line!
This might vary from user to user depending on how much RAM you have, the POST memory step is dependent on the amount of RAM you have, the more you have, the longer the boot time!

  • Awfully Slow Boot Time

Recently I have been experiencing very slow boot times with 10.6.5. Recently clocked it to be just over 2 minutes and up to 2 minutes 10 seconds (from the opening chime until finder loads). I have a MBP with 2.26 GHz Core Duo and 4 GB of RAM. Standard 160 GB HD (5400 Hitachi). I don't think it should take this long to load. I have repaired permissions and cleared caches to no avail. I only have 4 programs that start on login (iTunes Helper, Missing Sync, HP Scheduler and MS Au Daemon). I feel like this is an abnormally long start up time, am I wrong? Anyway, what should I do to resolve this or determine what is causing the long boot times. Thanks.
    Sean

So I just noticed that it takes about 40 seconds from the boot chime before I see the Apple logo and the spinning circle. After that the boot time would be normal (around 1 minute or 1:20). I am not running boot camp, but I do use parallels.
here is a copy of the full boot in system.log. I can't really decipher it, so I don't know how helpful it is.

  • What's your macbook boot time ? Post here.

Hello there guys. I own an Apple Macbook 13inch, 2.0ghz Core Duo 512 60GB White, with SuperDrive.
First few days using it I was amazed with how fast the boot time was, but now it seems that it got slower.
My current boot time is arround 25 seconds, starting when I press the power button till it shows me the welcome window to type my password (Please specify if your boot time is WITH or WITHOUT the type password login screen).
I havent added any extra RAM memory or anything.
Please post your boot time !
    Felipe

Mine is 50 seconds with no password sign in.
This is like comparing apples to oranges. There are many factors that could affect boot time. Programs set to run on boot up. Programs that have auxiliary programs run even if their not open. My eyetv and hp printer have these background items that start on boot up.
I think fifty seconds is great. My wife waits forever for her PC to boot and I know it has a lot less stuff start up on boot.
What are you trying to prove by this analysis?

  • PT880----Possible cold boot issue-----What are YOUR boot times??

I may have an issue with this board that I hadn't really noticed since I've been so heavy into the max overclock I could get.
My post and then boot time is strange and annoying-----and sometimes I have to just shut off and turn on-----to actually complete the process.  It just seems WAY too long!  But maybe this is normal for the chipset.
Turn on>>>>>to POST beep = 40 seconds----D-Bracket shows code of "Memory Detection" during this time.....(----This is the time that seems way out of whack)----most boards I've ever had go from turn on>>>>to Post beep VERY quickly.
From POST beep>>>>>to "Welcome" screen in BOOT = another 20 seconds
Completion of BOOT = another 10 seconds-----not so much worried about this one as I would think it would be Windows dependent and what additional software was loaded.
This total process seems remarkably slow----and again----sometimes-----I NEVER get the post beep (The D-Bracket code is stuck in Memory Detection) and I have to turn the machine off and start again.
What are you guys' times with your PT880????  I tried two different types of RAM---no difference----changing RAM DIMM slots-----no difference----changing RAM timings and voltages----no difference-----I also ran Memtest on both sets of RAM (passed), reflashed Bios----cleared CMOS, and reset NVRAM----no change.
Any ideas???  Beta Bios 1.53 issue??

  • What is your boot time of your Mac?

I bought a brand new Mac mini (2.26 GHz model with Snow Leopard). I think my system's boot time takes long (from pushing power button to the Log In screen). I see gray(white) blank screen for about 40 secs after turning on Mac. Then Apple logo shows up for another 20 secs. Then Log In window shows up.
I remember that Mac mini with Leopard booted faster than this one. At least I saw Apple Logo right after turning on Mac...
Do you think 1 minute booting time is pretty normal? How long it takes to boot your Mac?
    Thank you!
    Stephen

OK so I started up from my install disk (I have an older Snow Leopard family pack disk but decided to use the one that came with my new Mini).
I erased my hard drive, then installed SL, then updated everything via Software Update, then installed all my applications and stuff, then restarted a couple of times, repaired permissions, and restarted again.
Result; it takes maybe 4 seconds to get to the apple, then another 33 to get to the login screen.
So I couldn't get it to 20 seconds, but it was definitely improved a whole lot, and more in line with my previous machines. Seems like the install it shipped with had something not so good about it.

  • What is your boot-up time?

I have an early 2008 Mac Book Pro and am wondering if my boot time is normal? It takes 30 seconds from the time I hit the power button to reach the log-on screen. After I hit the power button, I hear the chiming noise, a light blue screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel appears, then I briefly get a dark blue screen then the log-on screen appears.

"I keep my MBP asleep even while traveling."
I did that with my 2.2G late 2007 MBP until one time it woke up for some reason in the computer bag. The Al case was so hot when I reached in the bag that I yanked my hand back. No more "sleepin' in the bag" for me! YMMV.
At home, it is asleep all the time when not in use.
Mine with 2G RAM boots in about 40 seconds (10.6.7) I recall it being slower under Leopard 10.5.8.

  • I am a geezer. My PC cannot load Super Fetch at boot time. What did I delete in my tidy, tidy, tidy?

    Hi Gang,
OK, I have been sick for sixteen years, about as long as the Target hacker has been alive. I will be 67 in a few weeks. My PC tells me it cannot load SuperFetch at boot time. What did I clobber? I saved the message as offered.
    Thanks,
    Al Marcy

    Hi,
Could you please post the complete event log
here? Was this error message  related with superfetch service? The error message here seems to be mostly associated with .Net framework.
Few more questions here, what actions had been taken before the error occurred? Have you checked if any viruses attacked? In addition, please take a try with system file checker.(More infor
    for SFC).
Regarding SuperFetch, it caches data to RAM so that it can be immediately available to your application. Sometimes this can affect the performance of certain applications. It tends to not work
well with gaming, but can improve performance with business apps. And this service is dependent on the following system components:
    File Information FS MiniFilter
    FltMgr
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    DCOM Server Process Launcher
    RPC Endpoint Mapper
    More information, please check
    superfetch in:
Threats and Countermeasures Guide: System Services
To see if superfetch is disabled or not, please check the steps below:
    1. Click the Start orb and type Regedit in the Start Search area.
    2. Open the Registry Editor.
    3. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
        then SYSTEM
        then CurrentControlSet
        then Control
        then Session Manager
        then MemoryManagement
        then click PrefetchParameters
    4. On the right side, double-click on EnableSuperfetch
    5. Check the value of it, it is set to
    3 by default on win7:
    Values:
    0 to disable Superfetch
1 to enable prefetching when program is launched
    2 to enable boot prefetching
3 to enable prefectching of everything
Hit OK then Close RegEdit. "
Then goto the services MSC ("windows key + r" or just "windows key" and type
services.msc). Scroll down to Superfetch and now should start. Double click it and change to automatic, then attempt to start again.
If we fail to start this service, I suggest we
export following keys from the computer on Which Windows 7 works fine, and then import to your computer to repair this service. On the good win7 PC:
    Navigate to :
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\SysMain
    Right click on the
SysMain, choose export, and then move the export file on the problematic PC, double click the file.
    Hope this helps,
    Best regards
    Michael

  • What are the normal Boot time?/Wake from sleep time? for MB?

Looking to buy a MacBook for my wife to replace her old Dell D-420. The Dell still works fine but takes forever to boot and to wake from hibernation. I was given an old iBook a few weeks ago and was amazed at how fast it woke from sleep mode (the boot times were pretty snappy too). So my question is. What is the "normal" wake from sleep time on a MacBook? How long does a cold boot take?
BTW: Steve isn't going to surprise us with an updated MacBook next week is he??
    Thanks
    Soon to be MacBook owner.

lancia is right- 56 second sound about right, my 2.0 GHz MacBook boots in about 49 seconds.
If you want your MacBook to boot up faster, you can reset the PRAM (parameter random access memory). What this does is that it resets all the devices it searches for when it starts up: forgets about them, literally
To do this, press down the command (the buttons next to the space bar) , option, P, and R keys at the same time when you turn on your MacBook. Press these keys until you hear the tone a second time. Make sure to do it quick, because after you hear the tone it won't work.
    Hope this helps,
    Wookams
    To your BTW question:
Almost certainly not, but I still recommend waiting a couple months extra because Apple notebooks usually update themselves every 200 days or so. I was disappointed from learning this, but hey...

  • MacPro has recently become slow (5+ hour boot times!)

    Hi all,
Let me say in advance that I very much appreciate all patience and assistance with my problem. I'm the kind of guy who's never run Terminal, so that's what you're dealing with.
In the past few weeks I've had some booting problems where the grey startup screen has shown a spinning wheel for a bit longer than normal. Once logged in, some tasks take unusually long to accomplish (stuttering video, loading a normal amount of files in an opened folder, launching an application, copying and pasting, etc).
This past week I couldn't boot at all and I tried to boot in safe mode with no avail. But then I booted up and left it on overnight -- in the morning I was in! Then when I rebooted to see if the problem was a temporary one, the boot time was several hours.
Some info about my Pro: it has 4 internal 1TB drives, none of which have fewer than 70-400GB of free space. The boot drive (1) mirrors to drive 2, and the other drive (3) mirrors to drive 4 (so, 2 drives, 2 internal backups). I also have my data backed up on BackBlaze, but I'd rather not lose all of my software and configurations from years of work by doing a clean install. I have pulled all drives but the boot drive and have swapped the boot drive to its mirror -- all with the same results. Does this mean it's hardware? It has NO third party hardware (maybe a graphics card to allow me to have a second screen, but I can't remember if I ordered it that way). It has NO peripherals other than speakers and a wireless keyboard/mouse that I've had for 6 years. My desktop is clean.
I've read a lot of solutions, but haven't tried all of them yet because the computer is so slow that it might take weeks to try a handful. I also fear rebooting, since I'm not sure it will start again.
Here is some info from EtreCheck which I've seen requested in similar threads. There's a worrying amount of red.
And I apologize in advance, but if you say "Uninstall xxx" please let me know how.

    Thank you!!!

    For starters, replace the 2600.
    Replace the boot drive ( Matt's Bootdisc 1 (disk0s2) /: 999.35 GB (67.91 GB free)
Never let boot drive get more than 60% full.
You will see huge improvement replacing it with 250GB $160 Samsung 840 SSD
Forget mirror if you are doing that and just clone the system as needed
Use 2TB media and data drive (Seagate Constellation) - if you can get by with 1TB and save fine.
Backups should be two or more and some exsternal and offline. Clone and TimeMachine is a good combination.
Do a clean system install on your new boot drive.
Don't reinstall any 3rd party, and leave Intego out. If you must, then setup a small special "system maintenance" drive with the "system tools" but AV just adversely affect performance and have no place in production system on a Mac.
A bad sector on a disk drive in some areas cannot be mapped out or fixed wtihout a full disk erase.
Redownload 10.8.5 only before and instead of running the installer (and here install onto another drive!) first make a bootable flash drive installer and keep it around.
Instead of using DVDs which I never do even 8 yrs ago plus, just clone or install a small 30GB or less 'emergency maintenance system' partition on one of your drive partitions (even on TimeMachine drive which should be around 2-3TB or more).
If you want to mirror instead of using Carbon Copy Cloner, take a look at the demo from www.SoftRAID.com instead.
Add USB3 Sonnet Alllegro for your external drives - excellent fast performance and reliable.
For fast scratch disks and editing or for graphic catalogues and libraries, a couple SSD drives mounted on Sonnettech.com Sonnet Tempo Pro PCIe ($300) can be found on Amazon and OWC www.macsales.com

  • New T530: same boot time after cloning HDD to SSD - what to do next to optimize performance?

    Hi,
This is my very first post here so bear with me if I have not observed any guidelines.
After I got a new T530 from Lenovo (i5-3230M, 8G RAM 1DIMM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, 1920x1080, 16GB Micro SSD SATA3, NVIDIA Optimus with 1GB), I swapped the DVD burner with the 500GB HDD and put a 128GB Samsung 840 Pro as my primary drive. I cloned all HDD contents to the SSD and removed all stuff in the HDD (I don't have a Windows 7 disk that's why I didn't do a clean install on the SSD). After these changes, I found my boot time to still be 30 seconds - which I guess is quite slow for an SSD main drive.
I've read up a fair bit on the Lenovo Community and the ThinkPad forum for solutions but have not found a conclusive answer to this problem. I guess I just want some advice from experienced users on what to do next after cloing the HDD to the SSD so that I can optimize the SSD's performance.
    1) I found the 16GB Micro SSD SATA3 is named "Lenovo_Recovery (Q". As I don't have a Windows 7 installation disk, is it possible for me to perform a clean install on my SSD C: Drive from the Recovery?
    2) If recovery is not possible, I am thinking of removing some of the bloatware(Corel burner, Nitro Pro, and many ThinkVantage utilities). But I also read somewhere that simply removing them does not help much (as opposed to a clean install). Is there anything Lenovo software worth saving (power manager maybe?)
To be sure both my TRIM and AHCI are enabled. I welcome and am grateful for inputs of other advice outside the above two questions: for example whether I should disable paging files or set paging files to the 500GB HDD disk; whether I should create a RAM disk, whether I should delete or shift system retore files, or whether I should change locations for certain temporary files.
    Many thanks for your input

You're already getting detailed advice here.  I'm just chiming it to say that the above doesn't sound quite right.
Lenovo_Recovery (Q) is normally a partition on the main drive and contains the recovery image.  It wouldn't be on the micro SSD - AFAIK.  The recovery image contains an as-shipped image of your working partitions.  Even if you used it, you wouldn't get what's considered a "clean" install (from MS media and without the Lenovo additions).  You'd get the OS as shipped - modified and added-to by Lenovo.
That micro SSD is probably part of the reason you don't see much difference in your boot times.  It caches frequently-used files and (at least once trained or pre-loaded) sort of simulates running from an SSD.  Without it your original boot time would probably have been longer.
[edit] Did you make recovery media from your HDD before removing it from the main bay.  I'm all for clean installs (how I run my T420) but that might be handy to have down the road some time.  Also you might want to pull a copy of SWTOOLS (I think that's what it's called these days...) and save it on DVD or someplace.  There are a few things you can't download from the Lenovo site (3rd-party multimedia apps, for example) that you might want to add to a clean install later. The installers are in SWTOOLS (or whatever it's called....)

what settings do I need to have to access Ashford University's student portal using either Safari or Firefox when I get the following message: The system is unable to process your response at this time. If you feel you have received this message in error. Please contact your System Administrator, or try again at a later time.

I am able to get to the Ashford University login display with no difficulties with both Firefox and Safari.  Obviously without a student password I cannot go any further.  If you can do the same, then clearly the problem is at the other end.  If that is the same case with you, then there is no advice that I can give you but to stir the pot as best you can.
    Ciao.

when i try to activate itunes on my iphone it continues to say "We're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time." and now my phone has stuck. what happened?

    Hello mzpartia,
I found an article from Apple that specifically outlines how to try and troubleshoot this issue. It's called iPhone: Troubleshooting activation issues found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3424.
    Resolution
Perform the following steps if you receive one of the messages above:
    Restart the iPhone.
Try another means of reaching the activation server and attempt to activate.
Try connecting to Wi-Fi if you're unable to activate using a cellular data connection.
Try connecting to iTunes if you're unable to activate using Wi-Fi.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you receive an alert message when you attempt to activate your iPhone, try to place the iPhone in recovery mode and perform a restore. If you're still unable to complete the setup assistant due to an activation error, contact Applefor assistance.
    Take care,
    Sterling
