What is your working set

I understand that we have a lot of people out there who have had no problems with any stage of the X-fi Vista drivers and some who just got their X-fi card to work. I figure a lot of us have DIY systems, so what works for one may not work for others. I have a DIY system myself, and i can only get mine to work for a 30 min to 45 min period before i get a constant whine from my speakers. maybe by listing your working configurations I and others can find the anomalies that prevent ours from working.
So if you have a working system, please list type of Vista (home, ultimate, etc.), processor, RAM, 32 or 64 bit, What X-fi card You are using, graphic card, motherboard, whether or not you have onboard sound, and what drivers worked and how you installed them (fresh install, update, iso cd, etc.). Here's an example:?
Windows Vista Ultimate
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2.40 GHz
Memory (RAM): 2046 MB
System type: 32-bit Operating System
X-fi card: X-fi XtremeGamer
Graphic card: ATI Radeon X950 Pro
MB: ECS Elitegroup KA3MVP
Onboard sound: HD Audio, 8 channel

Hello to all,?My setup:MultiBoot:XP Pro (64 bit)Vista Ultimate (32 bit)2003 Server Datacenter (64 bit)?Tyan S2895 - K8WE w/SCSI2 gig Corsiar Ram4 - W.D. 50 Gig Raptor "X"?2 - 7800GT (SLI configured)Plextor 76 BurnerCreative Labs Elite ProM-Audio BX5a Near Field MonitorsM-Audio DX0s Sub?Fresh installNew C.L. CDROM (from C.L. direct)?Primarily using Vista for audio playback, clearly better audio quality than any othe OS listed above (a fact after much testing).Checked DX0 settings (DXDIAG). I personally found that the Elite Pro did not take to well to sharing IRQ's with a video card. However as mentioned above, there are virtual IRQ's now so not an issue.Additionally, PCI latency settings have some affect on card performance, I tested all latency settings until which time distortion (or crackling ect.)?was limited. I have the latency setting?set to "6".Currently, the Elite pro?card is installed in slot "5". I defrag on a regular basis using Diskeeper pro,, seems to help machine performance,? which, in turn, improves and maintains audio quality.Also, one or twice a month I pull the Elite Pro for about a min. or so.. I have noticed quality of sound restored when doing so... Dont ask.. That's it for now... pbxcomm?????

  • @Skype users: What's your (working) config?

    Sorry for this extra-thread, but I'm not able to skype with friends because they never hear me.
    Here is my config: ALSA with /etc/asound.conf + /etc/libao.conf
    Listening to mpd, watching a movie in mplayer + a flash-clip in opera works wonderfully (thanks to "aoss opera").
    There are 3 methods to start skype (from cmdline):
    1. plain old "skype"
    2. "aoss skype"
    3. skype_dsp_hijacker
    Neither of them changes the result that i hear the ringing if I call a friend, but they can't hear me.
    The permissions on my /dev/dsp

    OSS-Emulation (with alsa) seems to work since (as already said  ) i CAN listen to mpd and watch flash-movies in opera (when i started opera with "aoss opera").
    I've played with oss2jack before I got dmix working, but had no success with it. I may try it again...

  • Working Set definition location?

    What file contains Working Set definitions in 10.1.3? I have a set of files that I want to define as a Working Set in the System Navigator, but there are enough of them spread out throughout my project that I don't want to have to add them to the Working Set one at a time - I was hoping to define them via a config file or such w/ JDev closed (I have the list of files in a text file). I cannot for the life of me find a file that contains the name of a Working Set that I've created, however - not in my .jws, not in my .jpr, not in my source tree and not anywhere in my JDev installation directory (I'm still using 10.1.3 EA at the moment). This info has to live somewhere...
    Thanks!

  • What's your final cut set-up lile?

    hello, i was wondering what people's editing set-ups were like. i am trying to get more into editing and curious to know what people have to get their work done.
    i have a mac pro (2.66, 7300gt), 24in dell monitor, and a couple phillips speakers, along with fcs2 and cs3. i'm a recent grad so i've only done school projects and it worked great. i do eventually want to improve and stuff but i don't have a big budget. is this set-up usually pretty good for a lot of things? is there equipment that you must have with an editing system?
    thx

    The other question to ask yourself...
    What kind of jobs am I going to take? Am I going to have to say NO to HD gigs? Will I say yes to DVCPROHD and NO to HDV?
    Am I going to be doing broadcast or distrobution jobs where I'll need to make sure chroma/luma is calibrated correctly?
    Are you going to wait until you NEED something before you buy?
    For now you need:
    CPU
    Software (and manuals)
    Deck
    Storage solution
    Speakers (sorry, I always use headphones - I'm the only one)
    External Monitor - Anything from $100 bestbuy close-out to a $5000+ HD monitor.
    Oh... and I'd invest in a good microphone too - you WILL find you need to do a VO for SOMETHING!!!
    Good luck, let us know when you make your first million! I'm just starting my 3rd... but I lost the other two somewhere.

    My mighty mouse just arrived, its quite cool. i find the side squeezers very faffy to use though, quite an effort. The scroll ball is great, and it clciks in nicely.
    I was wondering what you guys have your buttons set to do?
    Right now I am set to:
    Scroll Ball Click: Exposé - All windows
    Side Squeezers: Dashboard
    Scrolling speed: Maximum (Fast)
    See ya

    That was an exciting response!

  • ***What is your favorite VI or other software to view large sets of waveform data?

    What is your favorite VI or other software to view large sets of
    waveform data?
    I have to look at waveforms with several sets of y data of 10000 or so
    points. Should I put this into Excel? There are no cursors, or zoom
    capabilities, and so on in Excel.
    Using a graph in LV is very slow when loaded down with this much data.
    Frankly a scope is easier for viewing waveforms. A scopelike utility
    for Windows?
    MathCAD?
    Is there any neat shareware out there?
    Thanks for your opinion,
    Mike

    There are a large number of analysis packages on the market that can display very large datasets. The one to choose depends largely on the nature of the data and what you want to do with it after you have loaded it in. Wandering down the software aisle at your local Staples you will find at least two or three.
    With datsets the size you are contemplating, a major feature to look for is a zoom function that initially shows the entire waveform but lets you narrow in on the data you want to see.
    DIGRESSION ALERT
    Actually, this sort of algorithm isn't to hard to code. I wrote a viewer once that allowed you to view datasets of arbitrarily large size (in V3 I think... though it may have been in V4). The code initally presented an overview of the entire dataset
    by decimating it down to a size that LV could display rapidly. As the user zoomed in using the cursors (not LV's graph zoom) the code would extract the selected portion of the data, redecimate it if necessary and redraw the display. (Which by the way is all the fancy packages really do anyway.)
    The tricky part is selecting a decimation function that retains the overall shape of the data.
    ENDOF DIGRESSION
    Several years ago I wrote an article for a magazine (Personal Engineering and Instrumentation News) that dealt with graphing packages that could handle a million datapoints at that time (late eighties) there were over a dozen programs--and they were all better than Excel...

  • Forms and validations - here's some of my ideas, what are yours?

    One of the big things still missing from the JFX space (especially where JEE is concerned) is forms and form validations. Maybe you guys have been luckier but at least 80% of the screens I've had to build in my career have been boring old forms - enter data in the fields, validate them and hit submit.
    So, I've been hacking around on this to try and get a pattern and hopefully some reusable classes for doing this in JavaFX. I have something that works but the code is verbose and less than elegant. I'm hoping some of you guys might want to kick around some ideas on this with me here. If we can come up with something that works, I'd like to either include it in [url http://www.zenjava.com/jfx-flow/]JFX Flow, or put it out as a separate open source project (whichever makes more sense).
    What I think needs to be supported:
    * Map between a normal Java bean and the fields on a form
    * Validate the data, i.e. specifying the constraints on a field and then checking those constraints
    * Show a validation summary at the top of the form
    * Highlight individual fields if they have validation errors
    * Support auto-validation, i.e. the validation highlights and messages will instantly update as the user types
    Some extra restrictions:
    * The data input will ideally be a normal bean and so it won't have observable values on it. In most projects I use, the beans are coming from the server and sometimes may be shared between desktop client and a jsp/web client, or even be a third party API so they can't be changed. End result: we don't want any JFX complexities or dependencies in our server code (design leak). This rule could be bent but only as a last resort.
    * The validations must be defined relative to the normal data bean not a JFX model or controller, etc. This is so the bean can be validated on the server as well as the client. The server must do validation to prevent dodgy data getting in (never trust a client). Ideally we don't want to be specifying the validations in two places (i.e. once for the client and once for the server) as this creates maintenance problems and weakens the integrity of the system over time.
    * Ideally the validation mechanism will be based on [url http://java.dzone.com/articles/bean-validation-and-jsr-303]JSR 303 - Bean Validations as this is quite nice. This is flexible however if there is a suitable alternative that integrates better.
    To give us something to reference in conversation, I've created a small working sample. This is only meant to be a rough starting point (at best) and I'd really like to get feedback on both the code (i.e. should we have a 'presentation model', how could bindings be better used, etc) and the general way I'm representing errors (i.e. should we use tooltips to show errors, or actually show the errors next to the field, should we use border colours or put a little exclamation mark over the field, should the fields be auto-validated or only validated on submit, etc).
    The example is a single form for editing a person. It has three fields, first name, last name and gender. When the form is blank, auto-editing is off. When the user submits the form it is validated and from that point on auto-validating is on. Error fields are highlighted with a style change, and a tooltip is added with details (I think we can do better - what's your ideas?).
    I have used all plain Java to keep thngs simple, but I'd be looking for the end result to translate to FXML as well. I've also coded everything into the one class but the eventual goal would be to have the common stuff moved out to reusable base classes, etc.
    Here's a workspace with some example code in it: http://code.google.com/p/jfxee/source/browse/trunk/jfxforms/
    Here's a running deploy of that code: http://zenjava.com/demo/form/forms.html
    (edit: I've moved the code to its own project and changed the url for the launch - the values above are the new, correct ones)
    Looking forward to hearing some thoughts on this topic.

    At Devoxx I did some straw man prototype that you might find useful (or hopeless, I'm not sure which, I did it in a hurry :-)). I followed some principles that I was influenced by years back by JGoodies, but I haven't looked at the JGoodies stuff in forever and know it isn't all the same. But anyway, like I said, I'm not sure it is actually useful but maybe there is something genius hidden in there.
    I have a Validator, which is just a simple SAM:
    import javafx.scene.control.Control;
    * @author Richard
    public interface Validator<C extends Control> {
        public ValidationResult validate(C control);
    }The idea is that it is given a Control, it will validate that control, and then return a ValidationResult. ValidationResult is actually only needed in cases of errors, since returning null indicates success, so the following is somewhat of a crock but you could rename it ValidationError or something and remove the "SUCCESS" type and there you are.
    public class ValidationResult {
        public enum Type { ERROR, WARNING, SUCCESS }
        private final String message;
        private final Type type;
        public ValidationResult(String message, Type type) {
            this.message = message;
            this.type = type;
        public final String getMessage() {
            return message;
        public final Type getType() {
            return type;
        }For good measure I threw in a ValidationEvent.
    import javafx.event.Event;
    import javafx.event.EventType;
    * @author Richard
    public class ValidationEvent extends Event {
        public static final EventType<ValidationEvent> ANY =
                new EventType<ValidationEvent>(Event.ANY, "VALIDATION");
        private final ValidationResult result;
        public ValidationEvent(ValidationResult result) {
            super(ANY);
            this.result = result;
        public final ValidationResult getResult() { return result; }
    }Because Control's don't presently have the notion of validation built in, I created a ValidationPane which is like a specialized StackPane, where there is a bottom layer, the control, and a glass pane layer. And from CSS you can style it however you like. The ValidationPane has a CSS style class set in case of errors / warnings. So without augmenting controls, the idea is that a ValidationPane subclass would exist to wrap each type of control you needed to validate. It did this because somebody has to wire up the listeners to the control to react on text input etc, and so I thought I'd like that encapsulated in something reusable, and there it was.

    import javafx.beans.InvalidationListener;
    import javafx.beans.Observable;

    import javafx.beans.value.ObservableValue;

            public void invalidated(Observable o) {
                final Validator v = getValidator();
                final ValidationResult result = v != null ?
                    v.validate(getContent()) :
                    new ValidationResult("", ValidationResult.Type.SUCCESS);
                handleValidationResult(result);
        public TextInputValidatorPane() {
            contentProperty().addListener(new ChangeListener<C>() {
                public void changed(ObservableValue<? extends C> ov, C oldValue, C newValue) {
                    if (oldValue != null) oldValue.textProperty().removeListener(textListener);
                    if (newValue != null) newValue.textProperty().addListener(textListener);
        public TextInputValidatorPane(C field) {
            this();
            setContent(field);
    }This should also be usable as is from FXML since you can easily wrap a TextInputValidatorPane around a TextField, and CSS does all the styling, so I think it all just works. You probably need to have some library of sophisticated Validators which know how to read text from a TextField and compare against the validation annotations, but otherwise it should work well enough. Anyway, in the actual implementation I think I would omit the ValidationPane stuff completely and just build that part into the controls / skins. Like I said, this was a quick hack but seemed to get the "how do I visualize validation errors" part of the problem solved.

  • What is the mp4 setting for GoPro mp4 files?

    Hi all,
    I have edited GoPro mp4 1080-60 files that I want to upload to youtube.
    Since it's consider the best for youtube, I want to keep the mp4 format. So I'm using AVCHD MP4-H.264 1920x1080 as output selection which appears to be a no brainer, but youtube rejects the file apparently, since the will only play at 380,  max rez.
    It's not really working. I thought it would be pretty straight forward as Gopro has to be very popular device.
    What is the optimal mp4 setting for GoPro mp4 files?
    Thanks
    Den

    Dniss
    It happens to all of us. We can upload our HD footage (example AVCHD/MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30) to YouTube, but
    YouTube converts the video to a flash format and displays it in its default viewing setting which is not HD, typically
    480p or less.
    So, you or your viewer is going to have to set the viewing setting to HD before viewing your work in order to get
    decent display quality.

  • Backing Up Your System & Setting Configurations Using External Hard Drive.

    We just purchase A external hard drive to back up our system. I believe the product name Is "Lacie" Anyway, the question is what is the best way to set up to an external hard drive so that my computer runs @ it's best speed. Recently I found out that I had about 5GB of hard drive space on my computer and this is why we made the purchase. Now is it wise to install logic on the new external or keep it on my internal drive. Basically for the best possible performance how should I set up everything and transfer data where I can keep a great work flow.

    What's your goal? Do you want to back up your data or make a clone of your HD? These take two different approaches.
    A clone of your HD is an exact copy which can be used to restore your main HD in case of drive failure/data corruption/severe data loss. Do a search for "Carbon Copy Cloner" to do this.
    If you want to back up your data (Logic songs, etc.), use the HD just for this purpose and no other. And NEVER work on those backup copies. They're "safety" copies, not to be altered ever. If you need to work on a backup copy of a song, make a copy of the copy and work on that.
    To make backup of Logic songs easier, always save your songs as projects and simply backup the project folders. Makes life easy.

    MacBook Pro 2.33 160Gb 2Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Logic Pro 7.2.3

    I was about to start a new thread asking about the nomad factory plug ins, but I figured I'd ask it here since it's related and you're already talking on the topic.
    so I've been getting into work on my new MBP.. enjoying it so far. one thing I knew I'd miss on this machine was my UAD plugs. I've got the sonalksis plugs which are giving me some reliable eq and dynamics. but I really want more choice than just the logic comp and one other one.. I'm really missing the UAD 1176 and LA2A here.
    same goes for EQ and other (ok I'll say it..) 'vintage' sounding effects. I guess quality stuff with character is what I'm after.
    so I'm thinking about nomad factory (they seem to have UBs available) and also URS (even though I hate ilok authorized plugs)..
    is anyone using this stuff? I have used the URS before and was loving the neve EQs. but have only ever barely used nomad on a friend's setup once years ago. I don't recall thinking it was bad sounding at all, but I was always under the impression it was a little down-market. the prices don't seem all that downmarket to me though..
    opinions? thoughts? I'll prob try a couple of demos, but I'd love some feedback too.
    btw I'm ruling out waves. I fell off the waves registered user bandwagon back in OS9 days and frankly haven't felt drawn back. do their plug ins still not offer tempo sync, or precise control on exactly what incremental setting you want (for delay in MS, as an example)? and do they still block logic keycommands when their editor is open?

  • What is the recommended set up for Final Cut Pro re: Scratch Disks etc

    What is the recommended set up for Final Cut Pro with regards to Scratch Disk etc.
    I have a lot of projects and at the moment they are all over the place on various external HDDs etc.
    I just bought a new Firewire 800 External HDD and want to get everything straight but I'm not quite sure where to start...
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank You

    Media Manager (available from the File menu bar item) will consolidate all elements of your project together with a linked copy of the project file to a single folder in a location of your choice. There are various options to leave out unused footage, include handles etc. Safest way is to copy the files. Delete the originals when you are sure the copy works.
    The user manual has a detailed description of how MM works.
