What is "z" in z/Linux

Here is the text from Oracle download website.
Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.2)
Enterprise/Standard Edition for z/Linux
What is “z” in z/Linux
Thank you,
smith

Linux running on IBM z Series mainframes like the z10.
Up until the advent of Exadata ... it was the best environment for many Oracle database projects. These days it is still the best environment for RAC with respect to cache fusion ... and it will be many years before anyone has virtualization equal to IBM's z/VM.
I wonder how many years it will take Larry to match them. It will be fascinating to watch.

  • How to install only, BUT ONLY what i need in Arch Linux?

    Well, when i install BASE package (selecting only: tar, vi, linux), I got an error: Saying that /sbin/init is not on the folder. (I checked up and i figured out that the file is in /usr/sbin/init). And when i made fstab files the kernel does not detect some partitions, i want to know what i have to install to solve that?
    I'm really perfeccionist, so, i have no interest to install the whole base package. Anyway, i hope you could help me, and THANKS!

    victorqueiroz wrote:I'm really perfeccionist
    Thanks for the daily irony.
    What commands did you actually execute, there is not nearly enough information here.  If you only installed tar vi and linux you would not have anything remotely close to a working system.
    You'd need filesystem tools, and (unless you're really a masochist) an init system, a shell, and if this is going to be anything that could be called archlinux, you'd need the pacman package manager.  There are certainly some other essential things I haven't bothered to take the time to think of, then of course each of these things has dozens of dependencies.
    There are a few (very few) packages from the base group that you can not install and still have a working system.
    EDIT: perhaps you should try LFS.

  • What source base the Arch Linux Xorg build from?

    I need a complete package of X windows system installed. No idea which directory the Arch Linux X11 install to.
    Only find  below with "find"
    /usr/share/X11
    /usr/lib/ghostscript/8.64/X11.so
    /usr/lib/X11
    /usr/include/X11
    /var/cache/man/X11R6
    /etc/X11
    So I try to get some souce by http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/Releases/7.4
    I found its x server is only 1.5.1 and Arch Linux is 1.6.1(show when pacman -S xorg)
    I really confused.
    Actually what I need is pretty simple, need a xdm and xdm-configure to enable XDMCP so that I can remote connecct to X.
    (I tried KDE and GNOME, it doesn't work because X)
    Anybody can give me a clue?
    Thanks very much,
    Mike

  • Firewall, what better? ASA or Linux?

    Hello, i want to compare two schemes of firewalls, one with two Linux (Fedora), firewall1, DMZ, firewall2 and other with Cisco ASA 5500 series (DMZ in a port), what is better for a bank institution?

    Willy
    That's a bit of a loaded question :-)
    There are a number of issues that will help you in the decision
    1) Cost - usually top or near the top of the list.
    2) Support within company - do you have people within the organisation who can support Linux or support ASA
    3) Support from vendor. Many enterprise environments are still unhappy using a "free" distribution and would be happier and feel more comfortable using a vendor like Cisco. Your organisation may or may not be one of them
    4) Features - what exactly do you need your firewall to do. Not all firewalls are equal. There will be some things the ASA can do well and some things the linux firewall can do well. You need to draw up a list of all the technical requirements and then match them against the capabilities of the firewalls.
    5) Closely tied to 4) is extra capabilities other than just firewalling ie. would you like inbuilt IDS/IPS for example
    6) Performance - how much performance in terms of throughput etc. do you need from your firewall.
    Those are some of the more important criteria. There is very rarely a simple "this is better than that" answer. You need to work out your requirements both technical and non-techical as per the list above and then decide which one most meets those requirements.

  • HT204230 What are system requirements for Linux to use the iCloud web interface ?

    I access iCloud.com from a Linux workstation using Firefox.
    Some features are unavailable - like the ability to format text and select fonts for mail
    Is this iCloud.com's problem or Linux/Firefox's problem ?
    Thanks.

    From the Apple Store page for Logic Studio:
    Minimum System Requirements to Install All Applications
    Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of RAM (2GB or more highly recommended)
    Display with 1280-by-800 resolution or higher
    Mac OS X v10.5.7 or later
    QuickTime 7.6 or later

  • What's new in Oracle Linux 6.4?

    https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/entry/oracle_linux_6_4_has
    Any new additions to DTrace?

    Ok, thanks, that's a useful reference. It seems to answer the DTrace question: nothing new in this release. The packages haven't been updated for months either: https://oss.oracle.com/git/.
    I was excited by the InfoWorld article running today with the subtitle "Oracle has completed work on bringing to Linux a version of the widely coveted DTrace tool". Last update was partial, not complete, so this title is very misleading.
    InfoWorld has a comments section: (http://www.infoworld.com/d/application-development/oracle-ports-dtrace-oracle-linux-213759?page=0,0). I suggest that someone with authority on the matter post a comment to clear up the confusion.

  • What's the best GENERAL Linux forum?

    Naturally, the best distro forum is right here, but where do people go for general Linux questions, discussion, kernel topics, etc? I drop into LinuxQuestions and LinuxForums every now and then - anyone have other recommendations?

  • What is different in deployment settings for 1033 in windows vs Linux

    Hi,
    I could not find correct source which could explain the variation in deployment settings while deploying my appliaction in windows and Linux.
    here is the scenario (10133)
    windows:
    When I deploy my ear with class loading path ( 3rd step in deployment @Configure Application Libraries)as default one i.e i dont specifiy any , the deployment is sucessful
    where as in Linux:
    I have to specify the class loading path to ear exploded directory in order get the application working. If i dont specify the path, the application wont start up , complains that some of the classes are not in class path.
    Please, can you expalin the cause or point me to location which explains this ?
    Thanks

    Please post some more information -- I can't offer much based on this. How is your application packaged -- you should not need to do what you are doing on Linux to pick up classes contained within the application itself, provided they are packaged and exposed using the standard J2EE/J2SE mechanisms.

  • Logitech wireless mouse doesn't work with Linux 3.10

    When I rebooted after updating to the 3.10 kernel my mouse stopped working. The cursor is displayed but it doesn't move. I downgraded back to 3.9.9-1 and it works fine again. As far as I could see it was detecting it in the dmesg output, so I'm not sure of the cause (maybe just a regression in the driver). I've never had any problems with this mouse before.
    The mouse is a Logitech M515 connected wirelessly with a Logitech Unifying receiver.
    This is the dmesg line (on 3.9.9):
    logitech-djreceiver 0003:046D:C52B.0003: hiddev0,hidraw0: USB HID v1.11 Device [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb-0000:00:14.0-2/input2

    Mine works fine with Logitech Anywhere MX, never noticed any problems. Is this still an issue?
    According to the bug report, Logitech Anywhere MX should be broken I guess. If you need any info dumped to figure out why it's working for some, tell me what you need.
    Kernel:
    Linux xarch 3.10.3-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 26 11:26:59 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    lsusb:
    Bus 007 Device 002: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
    dmesg:
    [ 3.332661] logitech-djreceiver 0003:046D:C52B.0003: hiddev0,hidraw0: USB HID v1.11 Device [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb-0000:00:13.0-1/input2
    ( I have a keyboard attached to the same unifying receiver. Paired them up using a windows laptop. Maybe that's the difference? I guess pairing hardware to the receiver using logitech software could theoretically mess with... uhm... magical internal mapping stuff that I have no idea how it works? Ok, I'll stop guessing making things up now ,  good luck with the bug :3 )

  • How to install Oracle 11g on linux from VNC

    Hi:
    I need to install oracle 11g from VNC viewer. The VNC is stalled on linux. I managed login. Now I have a screen that has some icons on the top like, Connection Options, "i", refresh, CTRl, ...
    under that I have
    Accept clipboard from viewers
    Send clipboard to viewers
    Send primary selection to viewers
    From the Connection Options window, I checked Hextile for Use encoding and Let remote server deal with mouse cursor.
    What is next? How do I connect to the server. (When I login I used hostname:1)
    BTW, when I click on "Start TightVNC service" from Start button, I got "Failed to start TightVNC service for the following reason: Access is denied(error code 5).
    The VNC on the linux server is running.
    Thankyou.

  • Problems with a c++ code on a linux pc translate into java windows pc

    Hello does anyone know how I can use this c++ code in my java program.
    This is a c++ code what we use on a linux pc now I have to make the code
    for a windows pc with java.
    void GetLocalIP(int s,struct sockaddr_in *local)
       struct ifconf cfg;          // info structure to request our IP addr
       struct ifreq  ifs[3];       // part 2 of info structure
       int done=0;
       int x=0,l;
       // Get local ip addr, make information struct
       cfg.ifc_len = sizeof(ifs);
       cfg.ifc_req = ifs;
       // ioctl interface informatoin into the struct we made
       if (ioctl(s, SIOCGIFCONF, (void*)&cfg) == 0)
           l = cfg.ifc_len / sizeof(struct ifreq);
           while (!done && (x<l))
             if (strcmp("eth0",cfg.ifc_req[x].ifr_name)==0)
               memcpy(local,&(cfg.ifc_req[x].ifr_addr),sizeof(struct sockaddr_in));
               done=1;
             x++;
    }

    How do you want to "make the code for a windows pc with java" ?
    Java can use sockets directly, and you can get the Local IP address by this code..
    regards,
    Owen
    import java.net.*;
    public class testnet
        public static void main(String[] args)
            try
                InetAddress local = InetAddress.getLocalHost();
                System.out.println ("Local Host Name : " + local.getHostName() );
                byte[] ip = local.getAddress();
                // Now do a bit of conversion to print the IP address from a byte array
                System.out.print ("Local Host IP   : " );
                int toUnsignedInt;
                for ( int i=0; i<ip.length; i++ )
                    if (i>0)
                        System.out.print ( "." );
                    toUnsignedInt = (int)ip& 0xFF;
    System.out.print ( Integer.toString( toUnsignedInt ) );
    System.out.println();
    catch ( Exception dooohhh )
    dooohhh.printStackTrace();
    System.exit(0);

    At which point the ZSM is stopped as are all of the ZDM services. I also don't have a /usr/tmp/ZSM71_POLYDIST directory(Shaun, not sure why you named it this).
    So, it looks like it steps through until step 5... which I think is where it is copying the files to the directories, but it seems to stop there.
    Can anyone assist on this? Or would it be possible to get the SPK with the additional files?
    Thanks
    Stuart Beckett

    Stuart,
    the SPK is Novell copyright, so I don't think I can share it with you,
    and it includes a heck of a lot of my work on scripting the process
    (not the install itself, just the pre-requisites and determining what
    version you have :) )
    For Linux you can get the files by downloading the standard update - I
    take these files, perform any pre-requisite checks, then run the rpm
    commands as shown in the readme for the ZDML files. The reason for the
    strange directory is that I inherited the original version of this some
    years ago from the guy who wrote the install CPKs for ZDM7SP1, and I've
    been updating ever since. The variable linux_temp_dir is used in the
    SPK to determine where the files go - maybe you don't have the
    permissions set, but I'm not sure what the issue is...
    If you open a SR, it will only come to me, since I'm the only person
    who works on this :)

  • Red Hat Linux project merges with Fedora Linux project

    Will this mean that the Fedora Linux project will become the officially supported Linux platform for Java releases in the near future? Please reference http://fedora.redhat.com/
    What will be the supported Linux platform for v1.5?

    A sidenote: I have been happily using a plethora of JDK and J2SE versions on different versiond of SUSE Linux although SUSE was never "the" officially supported Linux distribution.

  • Problems with printdialog in linux

    I am creating an application under Ubuntu that will be able to print. But when I use the printDialog the program throws an exception under Ubuntu. But it works when I run the application under Windows 2000.
    It works in both OS:s if I don't use printDialog.
    Does anyone know what's wrong? Does linux os:s need extra treatment?
    I get the following error under Ubuntu:

    Hi Jrg,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I wrote a standalone version simulating the problem I have and -- guess what -- it worked fine.
    The only feasible difference between the two programs is that for the demo program I coded the layout and placement of the components myself, whereas with the problem code, I used IntelliJ's GUI builder, which uses its own layout manager. This must have something to do with the problem.
    However, I have managed to botch a fix -- first I set the JSpinners' values to 0, THEN set them to the random numbers. Weird, but works.
    Thanks again, though.
    Regards.
