What it "other " in the capacity bar?

when my iphone is plugged in to itunes i check to see how much capacity i have left. i have 2.3 gig of "other". what is other. ive deleted everything off of my ihone and its still there. whats next?

Do a sync just before you restore. This will sync contacts and calendar to the applications you have chosen and will back up everything else. After the restore you will be given the option to reload the backup on the phone. So you should not lose anything unless you don't currently sync calendar and contacts to the desktop.

What is "other" in the capacity bar and how do I manage it?

The "other" is mainly corrupt files and files that did not get deleted by apps one the app was done with the file. Normally the other s less than 0.25 GB.  To reduce the size of other, usually a restore to factory defaults/new iPodis required.  Sometimes restoring from backup helps a little.

  • Cleaning Out "Other" in the Capacity Bar

I'vre here that the "Other" in the Capacity Bar in Itunes contains e-mails, calendar appointments, etc.  Is there a way to clrean this out and get some of
the memory back?  I donm't store e-mails, but I notice that calendar appointments from last year are still in the calendar.  Any advice would be appreciated.

A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup... But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup... Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

  • What is "other" on the storage bar? I have hardly any storage left and it's mainly taken up by "other"

What does "other" on the storage bar? I have hardly any storage left and a lot of it is taken up by "other" but I'm not sure what to delete to make more room.
    My trash is empty.
Hope someone can shed some light on this for me.
    Thanks.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • HT1386 What is "other", in the sync bar?

I have 2.34G in "OTHER"! What is "other"?

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.

  • What is "Other" in my capacity bar?

    Hi All,
So, I'm loading UP and Star Trek (hi-def) and 4.11 GBs are showing up as "other" - can anyone tell me what that is... I only have 40 gigs (minus the obvious system OS.) Can anyone elucidate what those 4 GB's are...? I do have itunes extras clicked... can that be it... that kind of *****; I paid a hefty sum for those movies and would like the extras.
    Thanks,
    Jon

The "other" after updating to 3.0.1. in my case was close to 30GB, which disappeared after reset. After updating to 3.0.1. I am having trouble with iTunes sync. After another restart I have now 1 movie 1,7GB + other 2,27GB...
TV is not recognizing handbrake formats which were playing fine before reset.
I am also wondering if the "other" is be related to iTunes "LP" and "movie extras" -features???
I do not have any such purchases, though.
I guess I'll wait for another update for TV to solve the problem in civilized matter instead of spending free evenings banging my head against the wall.

  • Hey! I was wondering why I have almost 9GB of "Other" in the capacity bar.  How do I get rid of it?

How do I get rid of it?

you can restore your phone from backup, if that doesn't work you may need to restore as new and manually add your stuff back.

  • How do I see what "Other" is in the capacity bar?

Under music in my device, the capacity bar shows that Other has 4GB of space used. What does Other encompass and why is it taking up so much space. This is a 8GB Ipod Nano. Thanks!

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • What exactly is consists of the "other" category in the capacity bar at the bottom of the sync window?

What exactly is consists of the "other" category in the capacity bar at the bottom of the sync window?

Not actually, his statement is to not worry about what is in Other. That is opposite from iOS, if you have 8GB of other you most likely have corrupted files on your iPhone and you need to Restore to eliminate them.

  • Brand new iPad 2 32GB with 3G. When I hooked it up to my computer, the capacity bar had 11.4GB full in the "other" category even though i haven't synced anything yet.

Brand new iPad 2 32GB with 3G. When I hooked it up to my computer, the capacity bar had 11.4GB full in the "other" category even though i haven't synced anything yet. What does the "other" category consist of and how can I fix this?

The iPad was sealed in the box when I got it. It had the plastic screen protector wrapped all around it and when I powered it on for the first time it displayed the "connect to iTunes for setup" message displayed. The only other thing I can think of is if the person I bought it from had ordered it through Verizon on and the iPad was set up on a number on his pre-existing verizon account. My question is should I just keep using it and consider myself lucky? Since there is no way for Verizon to charge me for the usage because I never signed a contract. I realize that if it is on the account belonging to the person I bought it from, they will eventually figure this out and shut it off. But I might as well use it in the meantime right?

  • My iPhone 4 says it has 15 GB of "Other" in the storage bar in iTunes. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

My iPhone 4 says it has 15 GB of "Other" in the storage bar in iTunes. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

In my case, this must be me. My iPhone has a bug - it's not any of the other things that are considered "other". It's just an issue. I've researched for over an hour, reduced every settings imagineable (Other doesn't go down - in fact, it goes up, almost like, because I freed up space, it wants to fill in the remaining space). I called Apple - after one hour of being inadvertently hung up on twice (they took my number to call me back in case disconnected and never did - amazing) and then talking to another 3 reps, they just "guessed" which I find offensive to my time - just say "I don't know but if you are willing to take a chance, here's a thought..." rather than not be able to say "I don't know".  Warning: Resets DO NOT solve this problem unless you do a clean wipe out and start from scratch (w/o restoring your stuff).  Two hours later, I've resolved to wipe out my phone.

  • When syncing my iPad mini I notice "Other" in the status bar. What is that and how do I get rid of it?

When syncing my iPad Mini I notice "other" in the status bar.  It is taking over 4gb of space. What is "Other" and how do I get rid of it.

Lock symbol is rotation lock : depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can lock rotation either by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • All I still get is a blank other than the side bars with stuff in them when I go to Itunes store. What's with that? is anyone else having this issue?

All I still get is blank other than the side bars with information like previous purchases and all. But I can't buy or preview anything. I've done the winsock reset and all but that hasn't helped. I checked my firewall and that hasn't done anything either and it's enabled so why the issue?

    I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)
