What keys to assign Key Commands to

Is there anyone out there that has really got a good system for assigning Key Commands to groups of keys? My KC system has developed sort of spasmodically as I have got to know the Logic over the years.. and without proper 'town planning' things are getting over crowded on my Apple Keyboard.
I would appreciate comments from anyone who has a 'logical' mind who thinks they have a good system/choice for which keys to programme groups of key commands for ease of workflow. In particular I would be interested in:
- Score Editor
- Midi writing
- Automation
along with a word about favourite key commands
thanks in advance
MS

Suggest orienting as many of your key commands on the LH side of the keyboard so that you can keep your RH hand on the mouse.
The following is just a sampling of my k/c assignments; at this point I've been using these so long that I couldn't tell you if any of them resemble the factory k/c assignments, but anyway, here's a short list that don't use any modifier keys:
F1 = event editor (lists)
F2 = matrix/piano roll (within arrange)
F3 = score editor (arrange)
right below that...
1 = event editor (opens separate window)
2 = piano roll (sep. window)
3 = score editor (sep. window)
ESC = close window
Q = quantize
A = catch on/off
V = toolbox
D = MIDI out toggle (in editors)
C = cycle
H = hyperdraw autodefine
F = continue (need to press it 2x to play when Logic is stopped)
B = browser (media)
L = library
X = set locators to region and play
Note how except for "H" and "L" (a new addition for L8) they're all on the LH side of the keyboard, and no modifier keys needed.
Some RH-oriented key commands include:
\[ = set left locator w/o rounding
] = set right locator w/o rounding
Those plus SHIFT give me the same functions but with rounding
As for key commands with modifiers, you might want to set up a system for yourself where you reserve specific modifier keys (or combinations of modifiers) for certain categories of tasks. For example, you could reserve CNTRLSHIFTkey for score editor-specific commands, such as:
D = defeat interpretation
F = force interpretation
B = beam selected
U = unbeam selected
. = add staccato to selected notes
- = add tenuto to selected notes
< = crescendo
">" = diminuendo
( = slur below
) = slur above
# (actually, "3") = enharmonic shift #
@ (actually, "2") = enharmonic shift b
...and so on... Note that these aren't all LH oriented, but I like the idea of using character shapes ("<" = cresc.) as mneumonics where possible.
In general I'llI use CNTRLOPT+SHIFTCMD for "dangerous" (global) operations such as changing all tracks to READ or TOUCH. Speaking of automation...
I have F9 programmed to turn plug-in automation on/off. But toggling this without having the automation prefs visible means that you'll be toggling this function in the blind. So I have F10 programmed to open the automation prefs panel.
Ultimately I'd suggest that you set up your key commands so that they make sense to you.

    What is the default key command for THE COMMAND (apple) key? I seem to have changed it somehow along the way and now when I push the command key (only) it hides all open windows and shows the desk top and when I push it again it shows all windows again...I need to return to default A.S.A.P. just this one key...Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

    Go to
     > System Preferences > Keyboard
    Click on the 'Keyboard' tab and hit the 'modifier keys...' button. You can see and change the defaults there.
    As I'm not sure if all the labels are the same in Lion, he's a screenshot from Snow Leopard. It should be similar enough:

  • PUZZLER: How to assign the TAB key to a key command

    For the past 11 years I've had the TAB key assigned to "record toggle". But in L8 I can't seem to make this k/command assignment occur... Even when the learn function is activated in the k/commands window, whenever I hit the TAB key to assign it to the currently highlighted key command, it simply changes the focus of the cursor, moving it from the highlighted command to the search field.
    Looking for a clue... anyone?

    do you remember losing the function keys when tiger came out?
    Yeah, I remember losing F14 and F15. They still don't work. But I've since figured out that those keys are reserved for adjusting the brightness on various Apple laptops, and I think also some other models. However, it doesn't apply to someone like, er, um, me who has a desktop-model Mac and a 3rd-party monitor which doesn't have a brightness control that responds to... you guessed it, F14 and F15. So those keys are dead, 'cept for my modifier key variants.
    I tried importing my L7 prefs and sure enough, my L7 TAB assignment worked just fine. But I quickly reverted to my saved L8 prefs cuz I didn't want to take a chance of corrupting something or other because of an "illegal" key command assignment.
    So I guess it's time to find another key for "record toggle". TAB is going to be an 11 year-old habit that's gonna die hard, I can tell...

  • Assign key combination to service

    I got a couple of questions:
    1. In keyboard preferences you can assign a shortcut to Services you made with Automator. When I assign a combination that includes the '\' key, it simply disappears, so I can't assign command+\ to my service. It worked previously, though. Why is that?
    2. My Automator script is as follows:
    tell application "GrowlHelperApp"
              set the allNotificationsList to ¬
                        {"Audio Output Source"}
              set the enabledNotificationsList to ¬
                        {"Audio Output Source"}
              register as application ¬
                        "Audio Output Source" all notifications allNotificationsList ¬
                        default notifications enabledNotificationsList ¬
                        icon of application "Script Editor"
              do shell script "SwitchAudioSource -n"
              do shell script "SwitchAudioSource -t system -n"
              set CURRENT to do shell script "SwitchAudioSource -c"
              if CURRENT is "iMic USB audio system" then
                        set DEVICE to "Speakers enabled"
              else
                        set DEVICE to "Headphones enabled"
              end if
              --          Send a Notification...
              notify with name ¬
                        "Audio Output Source" title ¬
                        "Audio Output Source" description ¬
                        DEVICE application name "Audio Output Source"
    end tell
    It doesn't really matter what the script does, but when I press the Play button in the Automator interface, it runs instantly. When I assign a shortcut and press it (I assigned opt-command-,), it takes a few secs until the script is run for the first time. Subsiquent callings to the script are fast as expected. How can I make it run fast the first time?
    3. I want to assign the Caps Lock key or Eject key to execute the script. What is the simplest way possible?
    If you know the answer to either question, I would be very happy to read your answer.

    HI,
    Key combination is your field combinatios which you select or maintain during pricing procedure, its a first step of Pricing procedure determination.
    Lets say for PR00 (Price) you want to determine price with two factors.
    First you will create two condition table with the Tcode V/03
    Here you can have the combination as per your business need.like i said
    1. You want to maintain price for customer & material this is one key field combination. Table 005
    2. You also want to maintain price for customer & material & plant combination this is another key field combination.Table 006
    Now the next is you will create the access sequence for Condition Type PR00 for exp. u maintain access sequence PR02
    First go to V/07 & create access seq. PR02
    now select PR02 & click on access here new entries & and select the condition table here which u have created in the manner system should the condition record for a condition type PR00.(Basically it checks from specific to general).Means first you will put here Table no. 006 & then 005
    After this step you will select that condition table line & select field then enter it will go green means its activate now also select the Exclusive check in front of all the condition table & save it.
    Now you can assign that access seq. to your contition type PR00 & accordingly you can make the condition record for your customer.
    I hope it will clear your point.
    revert me if face any issue.
    Regards
    Deepak

  • What is the Fn key in xmonad keycodes?

    I would like to assign some keyboard shortcuts with the Fn key right in xmonad.hs, but I don't know which one is the Fn key.
    This website has the xmonad keycodes I'm talking about: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Key_codes
    I know my actual keycodes (the number ones), but I don't know how to assign them to run commands. s1 and s2 are buttons on my laptop, mouse search button is a button on my mouse (that should be for windows search, but I don't care what I set it to, really).
    s1 = keycode 159
    s2 = keycode 151
    Mute (Fn + F2) = keycode 160
    Lower Volume (Fn + F3) = keycode 174
    Raise Volume (Fn + F4) = keycode 176
    Brightness Down (Fn + F5)= keycode 101
    Brightness Up (Fn + F6) = keycode 212
    Mouse Search Button = keycode 229
    Sleep (Fn + F12) = keycode 165
    This is where in my xmonad.hs I want to set my shortcuts (because I can just assign them to run commands):
    } `additionalKeys`
    [ ((mod1Mask .|. controlMask, xK_End), spawn "sudo shutdown -h now")
    , ((controlMask, xK_Print), spawn "scrot -s")
    , ((0, xK_Print), spawn "scrot")
    Notice the "mod1Mask", "xK_Print", etc. What I want to know is which one (out of all of those on the website above) is for the Fn key or if there is one "xK_Print", etc. thing for Fn combinations, such as Fn + F12.
    I know that probably sounded confusing, but hopefully someone can help. I would really prefer doing this in xmonad.hs (and NOT use keytouch; keytouch doesn't seem to like my laptop for some reason). All I need to know is the Fn key or if I can bind the three digit keycodes in xmonad.hs to run commands.

    Usually the Fn is not directly seen by the OS. It is a key that is present to give an hardware emulation of some keys. In my laptop Fn+I emulate the 5 key in the keypad; while pressing this combinaison the OS simply see that i have pressed the 5 key on the numpad without seing that I have pressed a combinaison of keys.
    You can see the keycode of keys with the xev command (under X). To see directly what the kernel see; you can use the showkey command in a console (a real console not an xterm).

  • Assigning Keys to Apple Loops in Logic

    I am creating Apple Loops in Logic by selecting an audio region and then selecting "Add to Apple loops library" under the mini region menu.
    The manual states that whatever key I set in Global tracks is the key that is assigned to the loop. This works well for pitched material, but for non pitched material I don't want a key designated. I have noticed that when I set a tag to the loop of "Drums" no key is assigned, but when I set a tag of "Percussion" the key does get assigned to the particular loop. This is a problem because the pitch of the percussion changes when that Apple Loop is brought back into another Logic session that has a different key assignment the a particular loop on the Global Track.
    I understand I can designate "No Key" in the Apple Loops utility, but I prefer to make my loops straight from the Logic arrange window. I am finding the Apple Loops Utility a bit buggy. Does anyone know the most recent version of the Apple Loops Utility?
    Thank you for your help.

    Any word on a fix for this?
    I've found Apple Loops VERY buggy in L9! Not only do they not loop correctly in the browser when your project is at a sample rate other than 44.1 (for example, working for broadcast at 48k as I mostly do), but I've also seen them behaving weirdly in the arrange page.
    Today I had a truncated Apple Loop in a project which would play back differently on subsequent attempts. Sometimes it would get to bar 4, for example, and other times it would only get midway through bar 3...! And this is with basic Apple factory installed loops.
    What's up with this? I've already re-indexed and re-installed the loops. No change. No fix.
    Totally unprofessional, Apple.

  • HT4848 What is the "option key" reffered to in these instructions, I don't have a key marked options?

    What is the "option key" referred to in the instructions for using a recovery disc?

    The Option Key (along with Control and Command) will be on keyboards made by Apple and some 3rd party keyboards made specifically for Macs. Other USB keyboards will work but may have Windows-specific markings.
    The key layouts from left to right on Mac keyboards are (bottom row):
    Control - Option - Command - Space Bar - Command - Option - Control
    If you are using a Windows keyboard, the layout is the same but they keys could be marked differently. In other words, the leftmost key will be the Control key when booted into MacOS regardless of what is marked on it for when you are booted into Windows OS.
    Some compact keyboards might eliminate the left or right keys, but there will always be at least one set. For example it could be:
    Control - Option - Command - Space Bar -
    There are also symbols used to describe these keys in support documents.
    ^ is Control
    A stairstep looking symbol is Option
    A cloverleaf looking symbol is Command
    Some people will refer you to the "Apple Key". There is no such thing but it is common for the Command key to be referred to this way as on many Apple keyboards the Apple Character is on that key. It is usually not on 3rd party keyboards, which is why you should always refer to it as the Command key, since referring to it as the Apple key will confuse many users. Apple never refers to this as the "Apple Key".
    Alternative name for Option key is Alt, but again Apple never refers to it as Alt; it is there for Windows/UNIX compatibility.

    I need to assign a letter key to a Boolean switch in LabVIEW 8.5. I've found the key navigation sub menu but don't want to use any of the keys listed. Can I assign any keyboard key and if so how?
    Solved!

    Hello Millz,
    There are at least a couple of ways to handle this, but my favorite is to use an event structure.  Set up an event for "This VI"->"Key Up"  (Or "Key Down" depending on your preference).  On the left-hand node of the event structure, look for an integer called "Scan Code."  You'll have to experiment to figure out which scan code corresponds to the key you want to watch for.  Each key has its own unique scan code.  Then you can set up the event to execute the code that the Boolean handles.
    I've attached some screenshots so you can see what I'm talking about.
    I hope this helps...

  • On what occasions do the key figures become attributes of characteristics?

    hi all,
    On what occasions do the key figures become attributes of characteristics? can anyone explain me with an example.
    regds
    hari

    Hi,
    When we create key figures also we can define the keyfigre as attribute, in the additional poperties tab by selecting attribute check box.
    (or)
    Once we created KF and activated, the same can be placed in Char attribute tab. In the Char creation, we can assign attributes as per our requirement. So the attributes may be be char/kf.
    Best regards,

    Shift + U is not working
    how can i change shortcut key?

    I don't believe there is a keyboard shortcut available for that feature. But I believe if you click-select the topmost chapter, and Shift-click the bottommost chapter, it should select them all.
    Other shortcuts for books can be set up in Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts in the Panel Menus product area. There are no default shortcuts in that area.

  • How to find out what is the lock key for the computer

    How to find out what is the lock key for the computer?

    You don't.
    If you forgot or lost the password, all you can practically do is reset it.
    The manner in which you do so depends on what version of OS X you are running. The older versions utilize the reset password utility on your recovery/re-installation disk/drive.
    On Lion, you use the following technique to reset the Administrators password:
    Boot to your Lion Recovery Partition, by holding down the Option key while starting, and then selecting the Recovery HD as the boot choice.
    Once booted, at the top of the screen is a menu ..., select Utilities / Terminal from the menu bar.
    In the Terminal window, type “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A “Reset Password” window will open. Select your boot volume (your SSD drive) if it is not already selected. Select your administrators username from the menu labeled “Select the user account” if it is not already selected. Follow the prompts to reset the password. Restart the computer from the apple menu.

  • What is the input "key" in the IMAQ Write Custom Data palette?

    Hello!
    I am not able to use correctly the IMAQ Write Custom Data palette because I do not know what is the input "key".
    Does anyone know its meaning?

    Thank you for replying Ninad Regundwar!
    I agree with this. I have already read this information in the LabView Help.
    However, I would like to know what is the "key" specifically. I know that it is a string.
    I have written a code to add some acquisition features in a PNG Image File. For this, I have used the following palettes: IMAQ Write File 2 - PNG with Vision Info and IMAQ Write Custom Data.
    Afterwards, I have written another code to read the acquisition features from this PNG Image File. For this one, I have used the following palettes: IMAQ Read Image and Vision Information and IMAQ Read Custom Data.
    But, when I am reading the acquisition features, an error message appears: "ERROR -1074395723 occurred at IMAQ Read Custom Data - IMAQ Vision: The key you specified cannot be found in the image"
    I do not know what I have to put in the input "key". So, I have been trying different values for it: "data", "hello", "13", "56", etc. But, none of these has worked and the same message has appeared.
    Does someone know what I have to put in the input "key"? Does someone have an example that shows how to use the palettes: "IMAQ Write Custom Data" and "IMAQ Read Custom Data" correctly?
