What kind of firewire?

I'm new to all this but recently got a Canon Vixia HV 30 camcorder. It only came with a USB cable. My macbook doesn't recognize it. Do I need a firewire (if so, what kind) or some other kind of cable to watch and edit my videos? help

I think you are correct. Boy they do a good job of hiding it. Nowhere on the Canon web site do they mention that. They don't even mention it in the manual. But on page 67 there is a terminal called HDV/DV that looks just like a mini-4 firewire connector.
I have an older Canon camera. Firewire enables easy Mac connectivity, but it is still a pain to use. I can record 90 minutes of video and have it posted to iTunesU in about 4 hours. However, my cheap Kodak HD camera can do the same thing, with higher quality, in about 4 minutes.

  • What kind of Firewire do I need for the new Mac?

    Hey Apple Community,
I have a new late 2013 Macbook Pro. I noticed that it has a new firewire port! However, I need to digitize video footage from Mini DV tapes. The camera I'll be using to digitize my footage is a Canon Vixia HV30. Does anyone know what kind of firewire cable I'd need? Will I need an adapter of some sort?
    Thanks for the help!

What kind of cable would I need exactly? I'd like to look it up and buy what I need today so that I could start my work soon. Here's some reference pictures:
And do you recommend any particular cable? I'd like to purchase a reliable product.
    Thanks again for the help!

  • I have an old Black MacBook (2008)...does anyone know what kind of FireWire it has?  Is it a 4-pin or 6-pin?

I have an old Black MacBook (2008)...does anyone know what kind of FireWire it has?  Is it a 4-pin or 6-pin?

And there is cable from 6-pin to 9-pin (FW400 to FW800) available from
the apple store or anywhere quality computer products are sold...
saw a belkin brand on 2M cable. Also adapters appear, in a search.
And Thunderbolt to FireWire, for those instances where a newer Mac may not
have FireWire or need to use a peripheral via that port.
    What are you connecting?

  • What kind of firewire cable from 400 to 800?

    Hello,
I have recently purchased an iMac Intel Duo. I want to use the Migration Assistant to move my environment on my PowerBook to my new iMac. Migration Assistant tells me that I need to connect the two computers using a firewire cable. The PowerBook has a firewire 800 port. The iMac has a firewire 400 port. What kind of cable do I need to purchase to make this connection work?
Oh BTW, what gives with the far newer iMac having older technology firewire port?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

    Hi all,
Sorry for the delay. I did see the rapid-fire responses and I'm truly astonished with this forum. Thanks!
However, I must admit that I don't understand any of the answers. To Eric: Yes, I will only need to do this once, but what alternative do I have? Will Migration Assistant work over ethernet? I did not see an option for this. That would be my preference as I already have both machines on my LAN.
As to the question of whether my PowerBook has FW400: The System Profiler for Firewire only says "Maximum Speed: Up to 800 MB/sec". So I have no idea if the interface supports FW400. Isn't the physical interface (or jack) different for FW400 versus FW800? Isn't one 6-pin and the other 9-pin? If so, then I would assume that you would need a 9-pin cable jack to attach to an FW800 port, no?
Eric, you also said "so use that with the cable that you likely have for your external peripherals anyway." But what I have discovered is that the cable I have has two different jacks on each end: one connects to the Mac and the other connects to the peripheral. The peripheral jack will not plug into the iMac (nor to the PowerBook). In other words, I need a cable that has two jacks that connect to the computer side. Does anyone know the product number for that type of cable?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

  • What kind of firewire do I need for a Black MacBook?

I am trying to hook my Canon 3CCd Digital Video Camcorder to my Black MacBook, and I want to make sure that I get the correct Firewire cable.  What is the name and kind of cable that I need?

Your MacBook uses 'FireWire 400'.....what the camera needs I do not know....

  • Can I do a ram upgrade on my imac and what kind of firewire do I have?pgrade and firewire

I have an iMac from 2008 or thereabouts. I want to get into video editing and buy FCPX. I have model identifier iMac8.1, with an Intel Core2 Duo 2.66 Ghz, with 2 GB ram, one 1 GB DDR2SDRAM 800 MHz in each bank. Graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. The FireWireBus is up to 800 Mb/sec.
    Questions:
Can I expand to 4 GB of ram, as I’m told I should do for FCPX. Do I have the slots for that?
Is the graphics card sufficient for FCPX?
To get an external hard drive with fast connection for video transfer, do I need one with a Firewire 400 connector cable or Firewire 800? Or do they use the same connectors?
Thanks in advance for all help.

According to this http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.66-20-inch-al uminum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html your iMac can be upgraded to even 6GB RAM.
The 2600Pro is sadly on this list http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664 of not being OpenCL-compatible which is a requirement for FCP X
FirewireBus up to 800Mb/sec means that you have 1 FireWire800 port (plus 1 Fireswire400 port) on your iMac.
FW800 and FW400 use different connectors but there are FW800-to-FW400 adapters avaiable.
Personally i would go for an external harddisk with a FW800 connector.

how do I find out what kind of fire wire port I have on my desktop? I want to transfer video from my camcorder.

If you have Firewire 800 it's a boxy looking port, the Firewire 400 is thinner and has a arrow looking shape, you can get a adpater.
FW800 is simply FW 400 x 2, so the adapter gives you FW 400.

  • What kind of video camera do I need to be able to import to

I do not know what kind of video camera I need to have to import to iPhoto. My parents have a VHS camcorder. Can I use that one? Do i need to have a digital camcorder?

    Hi Katrina,
    welcome to thsi forum
    to throw in some €cents...:
    * mini-dv, nothing else
    * with the "big" brands (Sony, Canon, ...) you stay save
    * go to a shop and make some "hands on experience"... Panasonic for example is VERY small for some hands...
    * ask for a firewire-cable, 4/6pin to connect camera with your Mac (no, usb DOESN'T work)
    * that camera doesn't need any effects...- you will add this in iMovie..., so a very basic one is good enough
    * get a second battery and a tripod ;-))
    * follow any other advice given you here in this forum
and, besides, no, vhs camcorder don't work with iM....

  • What kinds of graphics do you convert to PDF, and why?

I work on new ideas for Document Services. Many people convert graphics to PDF, and we'd like to know more. What kinds of graphics do you convert to PDF? And why? Are there features we could add to Create PDF that would be useful to you? Please let us know - it'll help us build better products.

To transfer video you will need a IEEE1394 (Firewire) cable.  The Sony name for this is an i.Link and is labeled as DV on the camcorder.  The end of the cable that connects to the camcorder must be a 4-pin connector.  The end that connects to the computer is either a 4-pin connector (usually a laptop) or a 6-pin (a desktop PC).  Of course all of this depends on whether or not your computer has a Firewire port. If you computer does have a firewire port you will need to know whether or not is a Firewire 400 or 800 port.  It's not hard to tell the difference by looking at your computer as the 400 and 800 cables have different connections on the end that you plug into the computer.

  • What "kind" of Mac Pro do I have

Would anyone mind helping me understand what "kind" of MacPro (early, late or whatever) I have and how all of this may or may not affect how memory is recognized by WinXP through Leopard?
Is there an issue here in terms of the difference and if so, what is it exactly?
Also, will these issues be the same in terms of Windows 7 when it comes out?
Lastly, I was looking at buying a MacBook mostly because I want a small profile computer for office related tasks while on the go, even though I should be buying something that will accommodate more ram if I wanted to run my professional software on it.
Are the same kind of issues involved in what kind of MacBook or MacBookPro I buy?
    Much thanks,
    Jonathan
P.S. If I can get this information without the kind of low-grade insult and hostility that the guy with five boxes gave me on my earlier posts on this, that would be super.

Open the System Profiler in your Utilities folder. The machine information will include information such as the following:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
The information after Model Identifier will tell you which generation and the model within the generation. 1,1 means first generation, first model; 2,1 would mean second generation, first model. The Early 2009 (newest) model should be 4,1. There have been thus far four generations: Mid 2006, Mid 2007, Early 2008, and Early 2009.
All Intel Macs are similarly identified.
The currently made MacBooks can accommodate at least 6 GBs of RAM, although the Unibody MacBook Pro is supposed to accommodate 8 GBs. However, I don't know that anyone has reported they have successfully installed 8 GBs.
If your work requires FireWire ports then you will need the White MacBook or a MacBook Pro. Unibody MacBooks do not have a FireWire port.
Oh, and I'm the guy you insulted not the other way around. You simply have a problem listening.

  • What kind of external disk is best for iMac?

I have a snall iomega external disk that I love.  I just bought a new iMac and the cord does not fit into the USB on my computer, although it fit fine on my old imac. Not sure if I can replace the cord or if I have to get a new disk.  In the event that a new disk is needed, what kind is most compatible with the new iMac so i will not have to do a lot of reformatting?

  • What kind of a G3 do I have?

Sorry if I'm overlooking the obvious, but I can't figure out what kind of Mac this is.
I've recently come into possession of a PowerBook G3. It has two 64MB RAM chips, PowerPC G3 400MHz processor, and a 6GB HD. It boots up System 9.1 (I haven't seen a pre-OS X operating system in a looooong time). It does not have firewire. There's an Apple copyright sticker on the bottom that says 1999.
What do I have and what is it good for?

You have the PB G3 Lombard model http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbookg3/stats/powerbook_g3400.html It's capable of running Panther 10.3
With a HD of only 6GB, there's not much you can do with it.

  • External harddrive (also, what kind of internal drive does iMac use)

I was just wondering what kind of hard drive apple uses. I am getting an intel iMac soon and although I probably won't upgrade the harddrive now I may consider adding an external one later on.
My question is this: How come it is $300 to add 250 gigs internally on the machine? That seems like a lot of money to me(amateur)considering you can get external drives for almost half that. Is the quality that good, or is it just a matter of engineering?
Also, any recommendations of good external drives? Thanks!

    Dunebug38,
Apple uses different manufacturers for their hard drives. I have a Western Digital hard drive in my iMac. I know that Apple uses Seagate hard drives also, and likely others, as well.
I couldn't say why Apple charges so much to add the larger hard disk. Apple charges more for memory too, at least beyond 1GB.
As for external drives, I have two Other World Computing external hard disks, both of which have an OWC case and Western Digital 300GB drives. I bought the case kit and hard drives separately, and installed the hard drive myself (which is quite easy to do). These work flawlessly with my iMac. When you look for an external drive, I suggest that you look for a FireWire drive (or combination FireWire/USB 2.0), and be sure that it has the Oxford 911 bridge, as this one is known to work well with Macs.
    I hope this helps.
