What kind of hardware error is this?
Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error:
4MOT/1/40000002: Left_Middle-Front
Ever wonder why they don't just tell you what the
error means? For a company that seems to love
interface guidelines and all that, you'd think they'd
like sensible error messages too...
Most people are just going to call AppleCare if they get a hardware error. Does it really matter what sensor is reporting a problem? It isn't like you can fix it yourself.

What kind of hardware is required on client side with OWB 10gR2?
Hi,
What kind of hardware are you using, on client side, with OWb 10gr2?
Currently I'm using a PC having a Pentium 4 1.7Ghz with 1.5 GB Ram but it's extreamly slow.Hi
For Windows, ensure that the machine has a minimum of 850 MB disk space, 768 MB available memory, and 1GB of page file size, TMP, or swap space.
For Linux, ensure that the machine has a minimum of 1100 MB disk space, 768 MB available memory, and 1GB of page file size, TMP, or swap space.
Are you running an anti-virus? If so, try stopping it and run OWB. This is due to the anti-virus action and OWB being a java based tool...

Getting satrted with Timemachine / what kind of hardware is required
Hi
I am a timemachine newbie and I was wondering want kind of hardware to get. My HD it a TB, and I have a 500 GB external HD. So far I have only less than 200GB used on the hard disk.
How much space does timemachine need to back up my HD? How often does it save data? Is time capsule the best option or a third party HD good enough? My worry is about realibility of the backup device. Shopuld I use 2 separate HDs? Is time machine the best option or are there far superior back up options around? Etc...
Could I get your opinion and advice?

You can use two separate HDs, but not at the same time. An excellent strategy is to use one drive with TM for a week or so, then take it to your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, etc., and swap with the other one.
That way, you have two separate, independent backups, and are also protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike, etc. All you have to do is use the +Change Disk+ button in Time Machine Preferences when you make the swap, and try not to go more than about 10 days between swaps.
There are other apps, of course, each with advantages and disadvantages. But TM is specifically designed for the casual user, and normally runs itself without any action needed.
It's probably much more info than you want or need, but here's an overview:
There are three basic types of backup applications: Bootable Clone, Archive, and Time Machine.
This is a general explanation and comparison. Many variations exist, of course, and some combine features of others.
|
_*BOOTABLE "CLONE"*_
These make a complete, "bootable" copy of your entire system on an external disk/partition, a second internal disk/partition, or a partition of your internal disk.
Advantages
When your internal HD fails, you can boot and run from the clone immediately. Your Mac may run a bit slower, but it will run, and contain everything that was on your internal HD at the time the clone was made or last updated.
You can test whether it will run, just by booting-up from it (but of course you can't be positive that everything is ok without running everything).
If it's on an external drive, you can easily take it off-site.
Disadvantages
Making an entire clone takes quite a while. Most of the cloning apps have an update feature, but even that takes quite a while, as they must examine everything on your system to see what's changed and needs to be backed-up. Since this takes lots of time and CPU, it's usually not practical to do this more than once or twice a day.
Normally, it only contains a copy of what was on your internal HD when the clone was made or last updated.
Some do have a feature that allows it to retain the previous copy of items that have been changed or deleted, in the fashion of an archive, but of course that has the same disadvantages as an archive.
|
_*TRADITIONAL "ARCHIVE" BACKUPS*_
These copy specific files and folders, or your entire system. With many, the first backup is a full copy of everything; subsequently, they're "incremental," copying only what's changed.
Most of these will copy to an external disk or network locations; some to CDs/DVDs, or even tape.
Advantages
They're usually fairly simple and reliable. If the increments are on separate media, they can be taken off-site easily.
Disadvantages
Most have to examine everything to determine what's changed and needs to be backed-up. This takes considerable time and lots of CPU. If an entire system is being backed-up, it's usually not practical to do this more than once, or perhaps twice, a day.
Restoring an individual item means you have to find the media and/or file it's on. You may have to dig through many incremental backups to find what you're looking for.
Restoring an entire system (or large folder) usually means you have to restore the most recent Full backup, then each of the increments, in the proper order. This can get very tedious and error-prone.
You have to manage the backups yourself. If they're on an external disk, sooner or later it will get full, and you have to do something, like figure out what to delete. If they're on removable media, you have to store them somewhere appropriate and keep track of them.
|
_*TIME MACHINE*_
Advantages
Similar to an archive, TM keeps copies of everything currently on your system, plus changed/deleted items, on an external disk or Time Capsule.
Like many Archive apps, it first copies everything on your system, then does incremental backups of additions and changes. But TM's magic is, each backup appears to be a full one: a complete copy of everything on your system at the time of the backup.
It uses an internal OSX log of what's changed to quickly determine what to copy, so most users can let it do it's hourly incremental backups without much effect on system performance. This means you have a much better chance to recover an item that was changed or deleted in error, or corrupted.
Recovery of individual items is quite easy, via the TM interface. You don't have to find and mount media, or dig through many files to find what you're looking for.
You can also recover your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup, even it that's a previous version of OSX.
TM manages it's space for you, automatically. When your backup disk gets near full, TM will delete your oldest backup(s) to make room for new ones. But it will never delete it's copy of anything that's still on your internal HD, or was there at the time of any remaining backup. So all that's actually deleted are copies of items that were changed or deleted long ago.
Disadvantages
It's not bootable. If your internal HD fails, you can't boot directly from your TM backups. You must restore them, either to your repaired/replaced internal HD or an external disk. This is a fairly simple, but of course lengthy, procedure.
TM doesn't keep it's copies of changed/deleted items forever, and you're usually not notified when it deletes them.
It is fairly complex, and somewhat new, so may be a bit less reliable than some others.
|
RECOMMENDATION
For most non-professional users, TM is simple, workable, and maintenance-free. But it does have it's disadvantages.
That's why many folks use both Time Machine and a bootable clone, to have two, independent backups, with the advantages of both. If one fails, the other remains. If there's room, these can be in separate partitions of the same external drive, but it's a bit safer to have them on separate drives.
|
_*OFF-SITE BACKUPS*_
As great as external drives are, they may not protect you from fire, flood, theft, or direct lightning strike on your power lines. So it's an excellent idea to get something off-site, to your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, etc.
There are many ways to do that, depending on how much data you have, how often it changes, how valuable it is, and your level of paranoia.
One of the the best strategies is to follow the above recommendation, but with a pair of portable externals, each 4 or more times the size of your data. Each has one partition the same size as your internal HD for a "bootable clone" and another with the remainder for TM.
Use one drive for a week or so, then take it off-site and swap with the other. You do have to tell TM when you swap drives, via TM Preferences > Change Disk; and you shouldn't go more than about 10 days between swaps.
There are other options, instead of the dual drives, or in addition to them. Your off-site backups don't necessarily have to be full backups, but can be just copies of critical information.
If you have a MobileMe account, you can use Apple's Backup app to get relatively-small amounts of data (such as Address book, preferences, settings, etc.) off to iDisk daily. If not, you can use a 3rd-party service such as Mozy.
You can also copy data to CDs or DVDs and take them off-site. Re-copy them every year or two, as their longevity is questionable.
Backup strategies are not a "One Size Fits All" sort of thing. What's best varies by situation and preference.
Just as an example, I use TM plus a CarbonCopyCloner clone (updated daily, while I'm snoozing) locally, plus small daily Backups to iDisk, plus some other things to DVD/RWs in my safe deposit box. Probably overkill, but as many of us have learned over the years, backups are one area where +Paranoia is Prudent!+ -

What kind of presentation software is this?
I've seen online presentations where someone is speaking but all you see are real-time drawings of animations. The drawings flow with the person's voice and context. These drawings are text being written out, it will also draw some people then color them in. It will draw buildings/factories, a sky, etc and color all of these in. There will be more text drawn in real-time next to each figure to annotate context and importance. The figure drawings are very good. The speed of drawings are usually very quick to keep up with the person talking. Anyone have any idea what kind of presentation software that is or what that style of presentation is called?
Video and graphic post production software, not presentation software creates what you describe.
Apples video applications; Final Cut Pro X and Motion can do most of this type of work.
However top end work is done on very expensive computer systems with vast amounts of storage and very expensive software, were are talking the cost of adetatched house.

What kind of design pattern is this?
Hi ,
I am just learning the designpattern. So when I went through different kinds of design pattern, I got some doubts as it looks same some design patterns. could anybody please tell what kind of design pattern is the following one?
public interface IExporter{
void export();
public class ExcelExporter implements IExporter{
public void export(){
//TODO implementation
public class CVSExporter implements IExporter{
public void export(){
//TODO implementation
}thanks in advance..Well - in structure, it is nearest to the Command pattern as far as I can tellOr Strategy. Or Builder. Several design pattenrs may share the same class structure, the difference is in the context, forces, and the parts one want to be flexible. And if someone wants to make it explicit which pattern is applied, they should name things accordingly.
As Saish said this example shows little more that inheritance at work. Not a pattern in itself, but a core element of the language. Trying to "identify" a pattern that is not obvious from the context is either:
- a sign that the original coder completely missed the point of using a pattern (which is, as Saish said too, assentially about communication)
- a sign that the maintenance coder is looking for patterns where there aren't
- an exercise question
but it differs in so much as its motivation is to polymorphically allow the use of different exporters rather than provide a set of action commands.That shouldn't count as a difference, merely as an "application" (it's perfectly valid to have a hierarchy of commands all devoted to exporting, although, as stated, if the original coder applied the Command pattern, he should have made it explicit, by renaming the interface, e.g. to ExportCommand). -

What kind of hardware do I buy to add more disk space?
Hi Makeda here:
I like to know how can I increase my disk space on my Mac OSX 10.3.9? What is the name of the product I need to buy? I made a mistake and thought I needed more memory to get more disk space. The tech told me that purchasing more memory using a memory chip will give me more disk space. I found out this is not true. Please advise. Thanks in advance.Makeda:
First, let us get some info on your computer. Boot up your computer in Panther. Then go to Apple Menu > About this Mac. Click the button More Info. This opens up the System Profiler. The top item in the sidebar is Hardware. Click on this if it not already selected. On the right side under the title Hardware Overview is a list of specs. Copy this and paste it in your response to this post. That will give me the basic information about your computer.
Now to some of your questions. Your computer has two kinds of memory: 1. RAM memory, is like your brain. It holds things in your mind while you process information. When you stop thinking about it the information is not there anymore. 2. Your Hard Disk Drive, is like a notebook in which you write down the stuff you think about. It keeps a permanent record. If the notebook is not big enough it soon fills up and you can't store information anymore.
That is about where you are. You need to increase disk space. There are two basic ways to do that. 1. Remove stuff from your Hard Disk Drive (HDD). That increases the amount of free space, but it does not increase the capacity of the HDD. The leads us to the second way. 2. Replace the HDD. You cannot make it bigger, you have to buy a bigger drive and install it in your computer. That will give you more disk space. The System Profiler will tell you how big your drive is. Just under Hardware in the sidebar is ATA. That is your hard drive. Click on it. On the right side it gives you all the information. Note particularly under Macintosh HD the heading Capacity. It tells you how much your drive can hold. Note, too Available, which tells you how much empty space you have on your drive.
When I upgraded to Panther I thought I was also increasing my "disk" space capacity? True? Or am I confusing myself more?
Panther is an Operating System. It is what makes your computer function. It makes your computer able to run applications. It is installed on your HDD, and adds power to your computer, but it does not add disk space. Only a Hard Drive does that.
OK, that's enough for now. Post back with further questions and I will try to answer in the best way I can.
Good luck.

What can be the error in this simple Linked List Implementation
i have a linked list code that wont compile successfully. The code is
//Lets try the Linked List
import java.util.*;
class LinkedListDemo {
public static void main ( String args[]){
LinkedList l1=new LinkedList();
l1.add( "A");
l1.add(2);
l1.add(3);
l1.add(4);
l1.add(5);
l1.addFirst(6);
l1.add(7);
l1.add(8);
l1.add(9);
//Lets check what does the Linked List hold at this time
System.out.println("Prsently the linked lis is having: "+l1);
}Problem is with the add method . Compiler error is that it doesnt recognize the symbol ie add method.i m sorry , java version is 1.4In that case, read up on the link jverd posted on AutoBoxing. You can only add Objects to a List. An int is a primitive, not an Object. You can try something like this:
l1.add(new Integer(2)); -
What kind of Kernel Panic is this?
30 minutes ago my Macbook suddenly restarted and showed the "Your computer restarted because of a problem..." screen. However, didn't appear any alert or message report after the crash. So I couldn't check what did cause the problem. So I am in the Console application right now, but my question is from where I should copy the log text so you could tell me what created the problem?.
3 facts that maybe apply to this, or not:
1- 4 hours ago before the crash I upgraded my Macbook Pro ram from 4GB to 8GB.
2- I was using XCode and iPhone simulator while this happened.
3- 4 days ago my macbook showed a little GPU glitch on the left side, before typing my password on the login screen. But after that was perfectly fine.Process: com.apple.AmbientDisplayAgent [266]

Save as... TIFF (don't use JPEG)
and what do you mean by creating new PDF?
Create a PDF from those TIFF files in the usual way.
Do you have the option to OCR Korean fonts?
Also be aware that OCR is usually very poor for disconnected short blocks of test on a background colour like this. It is designed for simple body text. You may need to retype. -
What kind of follow through is this?
I wrote to the CEO at the NY Corporate Office to ask if anything is being done about this problem with only giving customers all day tech repair appointments. I explained in the letter that this was all that was being offered to me last time I had an outage and that I was lucky not to have to stay home for that, after I had repeatedly called 1-800-VERIZON and kept getting the runaround.
Someone from that office called me at 8:43 this morning and left a voice mail message without saying anything, that he was calling in response to my letter and asked me to call him back. No, that is unacceptable I am not playing phone tag on this kind of matter and calling back from work. I'm not playing any games and there it is once again with the run around going in circles with no answer to your question or concern. This has now been documented in writing and given that this problem received 22 votes on the ideas exhange forum, then there is nothing more to say about it. I don't mean to sound arrogant but my written statement about that speaks for itself; and if corporate can't figure that out, then that's pretty pathetic, just like the other poor communication from Verizon.
I may have to think seriously about switching to Comcast later on down the line and I could do it during a vacation break. It's just so time consuming but none of these customer service issues with Verizon ever seem to get resolved and frankly, I am getting tired of it. This is the kind of customer service we get after all the money we pay? As time goes on, I'm not feeling much of an incentive to remain a loyal Verizon customer over the longer term. I somehow believed that Verizon was offering me something better than what I could get from its competitors but I'm not really seeing much difference and Comcast is starting to seem much more practical. I know someone who has told me first hand that Comcast is way better than Verizon in terms of its customer service.
And please...if any Verizon employee is reading this, I will not accept any private messages, phone calls, or emails about this because it's a waste of my time and nothing gets resolved.I just called this guy back and left him a couple of voice mail messages paraphrasing what I wrote, thinking that maybe he just wanted to speak to me about it directly. There is nothing more to say and I told him I don't want any more voice mail messages about this unless someone can tell me that something is seriously being done to resolve this issue with all day repair appointments and I told him that I can't stand calling 1-800-VERIZON and getting the runaround being put on hold repeatedly. I just made it clear that it's a general concern and that I may eventually need to switch to another provider. The communication stinks, I'm sorry to say. I don't even have time to call from work about this.

What kind of apple support is this in Guatemala?
Dear Apple Staff,
I am writing today to ask to please intervene on my behalf since I've had several issues with my computer (an iMac 27”, serial number W8*****DB5), most of them during the first year of purchase at iShop, Guatemala which were fixed/repaired under warranty.
I decided to acquire the extended warranty for another 3 years, but a little over a week had passed from the first year of purchase but at the store were I made the purchase they told me they couldn't sell it because I was 14 days over the period of the purchasing time and this was Apple's policy. I asked them to contact you and explain the fact that I had not been able to use my computer during the various days it had been at the repair shop, at different period of times which amounted to more than the 14 days I was past the year, but this lead nowhere.
Now, I'm faced with a new problem apparently due to dust in the environment (?) and the repair is the equivalent to US$800!!!!
For your information, I'm finishing College this year to earn my Architect's degree and my relation with Apple started totally by accident 4 years ago. In the faculty of Architecture at the Universidad del Istmo, in Guatemala City, they use Macs in the laboratory so I decided to purchase my own. My experience using OS X was excellent and my computer was very responsive compared to my older PC. Editing Photo-shop, Illustrator, Vector-works and Sketch-up files was a breeze, and when I needed anything from windows like Auto-cad, I could always use parallels to run the program.
However, nearly 6 months after the purchase, my hard drive had a failure so I took the computer to the Apple Certified Department where they rescued the data and reinstalled OS X but the communication with the staff was difficult as I they never told me what the status of the computer was for around two weeks (the time they had the computer to run a diagnostic and repair the system).
When I went to pick it up, I was handled a receipt for approx US$100 (although the computer was under warranty) but after talking to the store's Manager he apologized and didn't have to pay anything.
A few months later, with the computer still under warranty and having it used less that a year, a new problem surfaced; the screen showed a greasy aspect in one of the corners so again, I took it to the Technical Department and left it over for another week or so. They fixed the problem,
And now, this new problem surfaces: (1/3 of the screen on the left side dimmed as if the back-light was off). I took it to the same shop only last Thursday and was told that in 24 hors I would have the diagnostic. Today, May the 23rd, after a week upon leaving my computer I finally got the diagnostic: dust in the environment and a repair fee for US$800 (?????!!!!) What's this?
I will greatly appreciate your help in this matter.
Thanks you in advance for your consideration,
<Edited by Host>Yeah,
While it is unfortunate, I have to agree with rkaufmann, too!
You had anytime during the first free year of AppleCare to budget, purchase and register with Apple for the extended 3-year warranty plan. After the first two major repairs, why didn't you sign up for the extended warranty then? Why did you wait so long and up to and past your free warranty year to decide and try and sign up?
You only have yourself to blame.
You can try calling Apple directly and plead your case, but I think that they will not let you sign up for the extended warranty plan when you had any time during the first year of it to do so.
Sorry. -
What kind of hardware do I need for WCS (AIR-WCS-WB-1.0-K9)?
Hi Forum,
We are about to buy one WCS, my vendor has requested us to buy a server with good specs for WCS. I found this:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/wireless/wcs/wcscfg32/wcswst.htm#wp1061082
Do we really need a very good machine for that?
Thanks much,
paulHi Paul,
yes you do. I have tried this on a P4 1.8 GHz with 4 GB RAM and a 160 GB HDD.
The software did not start. I got always a failure.
Did the same on a P4 2.4 GHz everything is fine!
(Have in mind that the next Software geneneration need consumes mor hardware)
Maybe you should use a more powerfull machine!
Best regards,

So what kind of hardware and software upgrades can i get to beef up my macbook?
i'm talking ugrade to eight gigs of RAM, dragon dictate, any video cards? i want this thing to last me for like 20 years. maybe boot camp it so i could run TOR on the windows side. and when you answer, please keep it simple cause i don't know TOO much about this stuff
The only upgradable hardware in a MBP is RAM and HDD/SSD. But neither upgrade done by you will void the warranty unless you are extremely clumsy and break something in the process ... but that is not very common.
Some even replace the optical drive with a second hard drive, but Apple frowns upon that and void call that system "out of warranty". But if your system is 5 years old and beyond any warranty, it s your call.
All else is soldered to the logic board.
2011/2012 MBPs can upgrde memory tpo 16 GB (although 16 GB memory is still $250). 8 GB is only $50, though.
BootCamp does not necessarily need more memory, since only one or the other is running at any time. But if you want to use Windes in a VM (virtual machine, such as VirtualBox, Parallels or VMWare Fusion) more memory is always better since both OSs will need memory.
Software upgrades are limited only by available packages, and come in a variety of types. You would need to specify software you want to use.
BUT
You said "last for 20 years". Several people have kept running applications designed fro the PPC (PowerPC) chipset, and which had a support software called "Rosetta" that run up through Snow Leoapard. Rosetta is now defunct in Lion and beyond. In short, software compatibility will likely fall off so eventually you will need to buy new software.
