What kind of Mac Book Pro should I get as a filmmaker?

I'm not sure how I should customize a Mac Book Pro so that it would be perfect for editing HD videoclips from an HD camera (like a Canon XH-A1). I want it to last me a long time for the money I'm paying. My budget is no more than $2500 for the computer and all software included.
I was looking at these specs? Can sdmeone please ell me what I don't need for the MacBook Pro or what I should add to these specs in order for the computer to still be amazing for a filmmaker's needs? Thanks!
MacBook Pro, 15-inch, Aluminium
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x1GB
250GB Serial ATA @ 5400
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide
Final Cut Express preinstalled
Accessory kit
AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook
Cart Subtotal: $2,507.00
This is also my first time dealing with Macs so keep that in mind. Thanks!

Editing HD-Video is one of the most intensive applications you can run.
Generally maxing out CPU und RAM should be a priority (Especially RAM since its not that expensive).
The SSD-Drive might be a good idea (speedwise) to, but it´s very expensive
Keep in mind that any MBP config should be able to handle the HD-Video. They just take longer on slower models.
If you are a professional and work wih video all day long you might want to consider an Mac Pro instead of a MacBook Pro.

  • What kind of bluetooth dongle(usb) should I get to use my Magic Mouse properly?

My Mac Pro doesn't have bluetooth. What kind of bluetooth dongle(usb) should I get to use my Magic Mouse properly? I already have one, but it makes the mouse seriously lacking.

I keep the dongle plugged into the back of my apple 27" monitor so that means it is only 1 to 2 feet away from the mouse.  Don't plug it into the mac pro itself if that is at any distance from the mouse.  The closer you can keep the dongle to the mouse the better.
Do a smc and pram reset.
If all is lost, and you have xcode installed then you can do a bluetooth factory reset.
Note that if you should sleep your machine, power is off the usb's, so the dongle is off.  This means you cannot wake the machine with any BT devices like the mouse (I use a wired keyboard).  Also sometimes upon waking the machine the mouse does not immediately re-pair (maybe 20% of the time).  So you have to flip its switch to get the system's attention.
While I do have internal BT, using the dongle disables the internal (at least for 2010 mac pro's).
And of course BT would go inactive if you pulled the dongle out!

  • What specs for Mac Book Pro Retina processing pictures in Photoshop cs6

What Mac Book Pro  would you recommend for a photographer toprocess pictures and video?
    Thanks

I have received the Moshi iVision 15'' and installed today.
    Result: satisfactory
Reflection is reduced with 50% or more.
Screen protector is still a little glossy which is necessary for this type of display.
Reflection grains are very small. Texture is soft.
Sticky side is only on the black part.
    Installation is pretty hard.
Here are 2 factors that makes it hard:
    1. The screen protector is smaller than the display area with about 2 mm bottom side and 1.5 mm on the sides.
If you arrange nicely the screen protector on the left it will look ugly on the right.
Centering the protector will take you time and together with time you get lint. A lot of it.
I used to clean the display with water and hand sanitizer.
To remove the lint from the sticky side I've used to tap that section with a piece of scotch tape.
    2. Lint in the air
Accesories that come with it are:
1 piece of cheap carboard that suppose to be used for arranging the screen protector
1 piece of cloth for cleaning the display - pretty good quality
What it should have to be better:
    1. Tape for removing the lint on the sticky side
    2. A better quality card for arranging the screen protector
    3. For such a big surface you would need an antistatic wet tissue that should come beside the provided cloth.
If I would recomend this to somebody ? Yes.
Only if you can take the time and patience to install it.

  • Mac book pro running parallels gets waaay hot,,,what can i do

When using my retina display mac book pro the bottom of the unit gets really hot,,,uncomfortable to touch and you can feel the heat coming through teh key board

I am not using Parallels but am using Boot Camp Windows 7 64-bit. Running flight sims my MBP Retina reached 213 deg F. I know from previous models that Windows runs hotter than OS X on the Mac Book Pro - there some Windows programs like Speed Fan you can donwload for free that will give you control over the fans in Windows - not sure how well they work in Parallels though.
The standard answer here is the CPU is smart and will cycle down when it reaches too high a temp so you don't need to worry about overheating really.
The one concern I have - excessive heat is never good for electronics - is the display. On the Retina in Windows when gaming or under a load, the glass itself gets pretty hot on the lower left bottom and you can see the exhaust vents for the chassis go right onto the hinge below the screen - heat is obviously reaching the screen as well. My original Retina display just had to be replaced at 45 days old because I was getting increasingly dark bands running up the display in this area. I am sure that heat was a factor. We had the same issue on the previous MBP display before I understood how hot it was getting.
I suggest trying the Rain Design iLap - it's a good stand and does help keep the MBP a bit cooler. I've tried Cooler Master U2 and U3 fan stands but they don't make any difference in Windows when it's running hot.
Definitely lowering the brightness should help too.
Also make sure your Windows power setting is set to "Balanced" and not "High Perfomance" - this allows your CPU to idle and cycle to lower temps until it needs more power.

  • HT1338 anyone know what causes the mac book pro to have slow startup ?

takes a longtime for my mac book pro to start up any ideas ? already tried clearing cookies and basics

First, make sure you have adequate backups. If your hard disk is failing this could be a sign. It can be replaced if necessary, but a backup strategy is recommended whether or not you are experiencing problems.
Read: OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly. The article is very cursory, but be sure to read through to the end. Unfortunately the link there is broken, so use this one: Disk Utility. To do this you must start your Mac from the Recovery System or Internet Recovery.
Rather than ask a dozen questions for more details about your system consider the following:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply. Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • Late 2011 Mac Book Pro Should streaming videos be HD or SD?

Streaming Rental Videos. Should I order HD or SD?

Has nothing really to do with your computer, but has everything to do with your bandwith connection speed. Personally I can't tell the difference on my late 2013 macbook pro retina, between HD and SD when renting movies in itunes the screen is too small, but thats a YMMV thing.

  • ?s about RAM, Adobe CS3, which Mac Book Pro should I purchase?

I have not yet purchased my MBP, but am curious about the performance of the Adobe CS3 on a 256 MBP. I am trashing my pc for a Mac and want to get the right one for my classes! Adobe CS3 made my computer completely shut down even when I upgraded the ram! It was horrible! I have seen some of yall have upgraded your MBP's to 3 or 4GB. Is this possible with the 256 MBP or do I need to purchase the 512 in order to be able to upgrade the RAM that high? If yall could help me out with this one, that would be awesome. Obviously, I'd rather spend less money and get the 256 and then order the extra RAM to install. Do you purchase the RAM from Apple and does anyone know how much they cost? I've never owned a MAC and haven't used one in probably 8 years! Thanks for your help!

I cant help you on the CS3 problem, but when I bought my MBP I asked about RAM and I'll pass on the same info to you: -
    1) MBP take a maxiumum of 4GB ram and comes with 2 * 1GB RAM sticks as standard.
    2) DONT BUY YOUR RAM FROM APPLE! I was warned about this, the main reason being the price tag! You can buy the same type of RAM direct from I think it's Crucial and save about £200ish. You'll need two * 2GB sticks.
The best bet is to go into an Apple store and have a look at the models on offer before making your choice.
    I hope this helps.

  • What is better mac book pro isight or standalone

    or are they the same?

it's my understanding that the new internal iSights have a much higher resolution than the standalone models and it would appear so if you see them working directly on the computer. Just check out an Apple store and you can see the improvement. However... I'm seeing some broadcasting quality issues from some built-ins. Specifically, one friend seems to have a serious white balance issue wtih her iMac. It constantly changes.

  • TS1372 whats if my mac book pro keeps giving me the same error code 1429

time and time again keep getting the same code 1429 please help need my iPod .

If you keep getting a 'red' message it means that the HDD is faulty and will have to be replaced.  You will have to format the new HDD in Disk Utility>Erase and then install the OSX and your data from Time Machine.

  • How to extend the warranty for my mac book pro once it gets older than 1 year?

my warranty for my mac ends this september and i wish to extend its warranty!
what should i need to do forit?
    how much would it cost?
and how far is it useful to exteend my warranty?

    chaitanyeah,
purchasing an AppleCare Protection Plan (in legal terms, it’s not a warranty extension, though it functions like one) can be done for your MacBook Pro while it remains in warranty. Once the Plan is purchased, you will need to register it with Apple as applying to your MacBook Pro. Its cost depends upon which country you’re in and from whom you purchase it. Its usefulness depends upon your tolerance (or lack thereof) for risk; it’s analogous to an insurance policy.

  • Mac book pro hard drive getting full

I am about 90 % full on my hard drive. I have a time machine back up and a drive for saving photos both 1 TB. I have purchased a new 2TB drive. would it be to my advantage to install any new apps to the new hard drive are move some things over to it some I Movies  are apps I do not use much. I assume the mac can acess them from the other drive for use.

Programs should remain on the boot drive because they have support files they expect to be in certain places,
Space hogging user files transferred to the storage drive, especially Movies is a really big hog.
Download this free great program that will help you visualize where all your hard drive space is going.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/#download
Remember, TimeMachine is a rotating image backup of your boot drive only, so you need to make another hardware backup of your storage drive, as you need to maintain TWO hardware backups of your data at all times.
Also read through my massive brain dump post here, it will fill in a lot of information you may require

  • I am looking to upgrade my white iBook to a mac book pro, it will be used for photo editing up of som 50k photos or more for the family. iPhoto stoked on external HD

What type of mac book pro should I look at with 8 or 16gb ram?.

8 GB RAM will be sufficient for photo editing.  The 15" display would be superior in both size and resolution when compared to the 13".  The best approach is to test both in an Apple store.
