What kind of performance should I expect from my Mac Mini?

I just purchased a Mac Mini (Mid 2011) model. I got the 599 model with Core i5 2.3 ghz and 2GB of RAM.
So far, I've been really disappointed with the performance. Launching programs like iMovie or iPhoto can take an extremely long time. When I hae iMovie and iPhoto open, switching between the two apps forces me to stare at the spinning beach ball for up to 30 seconds each time. Just opening launchpad seems to take a really long time.
Is this normal performance or is there something wrong with my machine? Should I upgrade to 4GB of RAM?

It's not so much that speed and performance are super important to me. I'm not editing professional video, working with After Effects, or playing the latest games at their highest quality. I really just use it for web surfing, working with photos in iPhoto, and maybe putting a movie together from my pictures with iMovie. I understand that with a lower power CPU, rendering a movie in iMovie, say, is going to take much longer than it would on a Mac Pro. I'm fine with that. But just basic tasks, such as switching between apps is painfully slow at 2GB. I know it's not a top of the line machine, but I kind of find that behaviour in a brand new machine with apps that come with it unreasonable.
I recently upgraded to 4GB on the Mini and performance is much better. Switching and launching apps is acceptable now. I honestly think though that Apple just shouldn't be selling new Macs with anything less than 4GB if that's what it really requires to be functional and not frustrating to use.

  • Generic connectivity to SQL server: what kind of performance can I expect?

I have set up a generic connection to a SQL server 2k db, with Oracle on another win 2k box. Both databases are in their "out of the box" configuration, so no particular tuning has been done: but the generic connectivity shows awful performance. In fact I have tried various kind of queries, and all of them show abysmal performance. A query with an "insert - select" that transferred 80K lines executed for one hour, with an average transfer rate of 1KB per second!
I don't think this is the kind of performance I can expect from this tool, is it? Is there anyway particular I can do in order to tune the dblink over the generic connectivity?

I don't think this is the kind of performance I can
expect from this tool, is it? Is there anyway
particular I can do in order to tune the dblink over
the generic connectivity?Nevermind: apparently there are network communication problems between the two machines. Trying to execute the same tests on two co-located dbs shows performances of about 700ms in order to transfer 70000 3-column lines from a sql server db to oracle with a "insert into ... select * from" query.

  • What kind of longevity can I expect from the SSD in a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

    Hi all,
I recently ordered a new MacBook Pro with the Retina Display. This will be both my first computer and my first Mac that uses a SSD as the primary storage device. As the title of this post suggests, what I would like to know is what sort of lifespan/longevity can I expect to get out of it? My current MacBook Pro was manufactured in 2007 and has a stock 160GB Fujitsu hard drive that has been fantastic for me over the past 4-5 years. It continues to run like a champ, and I would hope that a brand new SSD would be able to last at least that long. Given that the new retina MBPs cannot be upgraded or (easily) user-serviced, I am somewhat curious to know whether or not Apple's new proprietary SSD modules will give out/slow to a crawl before/after my new machine becomes completely obsolete. I have been searching for articles published within the past few months on whether or not the current crop of SSDs on the market are more reliable than those introduced a year or two ago, but alas, I haven't had much luck. Perhaps it is still too early to tell?
I found a few discussion threads on here somewhere where some users indicated that their original MacBook Airs, or other SSD-equipped MacBooks, were still performing quite well and responsively after a few years of use. Can anyone substantiate this for me? How long have you been using your SSD(s) in your Mac(s), and do you think the newer models will be able to last several years? I would greatly appreciate any insight.

While I think your concern is legitimate (it was mine too), I think to some extent, how long they last will be up to you. The individual cells in the flash media in an SSD have limited life spans, and SSD controllers have a variety of techniques to spread that wear around evenly (wear leveling). That wear is exacerbated by the controller having to erase a whole block of data when even just one page needs to be changed, and if not all the data in the block is still valid, more data than necessary gets moved (write amplification). To provide some extra room for all this reshuffling of data, SSD manufacturers build in extra space that's inaccessible to the user (over-provisioning), but it typically runs about 7%. (This is a good discussion of the inner workings of all this)
If you stuff your SSD full of files, so that there's very little room to do all this rearranging, I think you'll experience the slowdown you're concerned about. TRIM, which Apple's SSD's support, will help, but you can too. Allow plenty of free space on your SSD and perhaps partition it so that there is free space outside the partition (check this out to see what a difference it can make). You can't use it but the controller can as an extension of the built-in over-provisioning.
You also mention that you "will most likely use it to record several tracks and store my growing library of songs and videos." Why not instead use an external SSD connected via USB 3.0 for storage? They're relatively cheap, very fast, and keep the space on your internal working drive free. A BootCamp partition would also take up space, so you might consider using Windows in a Virtual Machine instead. VMware Fusion or Parallels would be installed on the internal SSD but the virtual machine files could  go on the external.
In any case, your data is more important than your SSD, so back up, back up, back up.

  • What kind of throughput should I expect? Anyone using AQ in high volume?

    Hi,
I am working with AQ in a 10.2 environment and have been doing some testing with AQ. What I have is a very simple Queue with 1 queue table. The queue table structure is:
    id number
    message varchar(256)
    message_date date
I have not done anything special with storage paramteres, etc so it's all defalt at this point. The I created a stored procedure that will generate messages given message text and number of times to loop. When I run this procedure with 10,000 iterations it runs in 15 seconds (if I commit all messages at the end) and 24 seconds if I commit after each message (probabliy more realistic).
Now, on the same database I have a straight table that contains one column (message varchar(256)). I have also created a similiar storage procedure to insert into it. For this, 10,000 inserts takes about 1 second.
As you can see there is an order of magnitude of difference so I am looking to see if others have been able to achieve higher throughput than 500-700 messages per second and if so what was done to achieve it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

Yes, I have seen it. My testing so far hasn't even gotten to the point of concurrent enqueue/dequeue. So far I have focused on enqueue time and it is dramatically slower than a plain old database table. That link also discussed mutliple indexed organized tables being created behind the scenes. I'm guessing that the 15X factor I am seeing is because of 4 underlying tables, plus they are indexed organized which adds additional overhead.
So my question remains - Is anyone using AQ for high volume processing? I suppose I could create a bunch of queues. However, that will create additional management on my side which is what I was trying to avoid by using AQ in the first place.
Can one queue be served by multiple queue tables? Can queue tables be partitioned? I would like to minimize the number of queue so that the dequeue processes don't have to contain multiplexed logic.
    Thanks

  • What is best way to get LCD display for Mac mini?

Just got Mac Mini but when I connect it to my Samsung LCD the display quality is crap.  What is the best way to get HD resolution, (maximum quality) from this set up?

    Thanks,
I did try all of the settings on the LCD display.  It is 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.  Built in 2011 by Samsung as a HD TV, computer monitor and audio/video combo.  I just let the Mac mini select the appropriate settings when I did initial startup last night.  I It came with an HDMI to DVI adapter which (to me) implies I need to get the male end of the DVI adapter to connect to the 9 pin (PC input).  Current HDMI is working but just not the "wow factor" that I expected from the Mac mini.  Compatibiltiy issue of some kind; input/output, settings, software update, or user error   Was trying to avoid getting a new monitor.

  • If my iphone 4s doesn't support 4G LTE, then what kind of data would I get from the plan with 4G LTE Data?

I am currently have iphone 4s. I am planing to use the plan which have 4G LTE for data; however, my phone doesn't support 4G LTE. So, i want to know what kind of data would i get from this plan. Is it gonna be 4g or 3g or no data at all? I am very confused right now.
The plan is UNLIMITED WEB & TEXT WITH 100 MINUTES TALK.  Up to 5Gb of nationwide 4g lte data.
If you look at the plan it has 4g lte data, but my phone doesn't support it. Please answer my question.

Ask the wireless provider you have the plan with - they should be able to tell what speed
you will get if you cannot connect at 4G/LTE.
Your iPhone will connect at the highest speed it can by default. But not all wireless providers
offer 3G as the fallback connection on their 4G network - some fall back to 2G.

Hey Luis. I not only remember…I still have mine (OS 9)!  Works perfectly well…for some things; just need to be selective about what I ask it to do. (Also have its big brother Pismo running Tiger, which is still an extremely competent machine.) When I take them out of their cases, I'm still amazed at the G3's build quality.

  • What kind of questions can be asked from business in an enhancement?

    Hello people,
I am working on an enhancement which talks about a program which checks if the ee exists in the system, or not. How can I approach this ENH? What kind of questions should I ask business, Please advise.
    Thanks,
    JEss..

    Hi,
The best way to check whether a personnel exists on the system is to check for the unique ID given to the person by the states (as you said one example is the SSN for US). I guess all of the countries has this king of unique ID attached to their citizens. However, in case of a multi-national implementation, you may need a more integrated way of checking these several types of numbers. Checking for the full name may only work with user interaction.

Not quite. Downloading the current version of NeoOffice is definitely not free (downloading the previous version is). The developers of NeoOffice (the most Mac-like of the StarOffice descendants) make a distinction between the application itself (which is free) and downloading it, for which they require what they are pleased to call a "donation" (since it's mandatory, I would call it a fee).

Would that include the report on the state of the US economy -- you know, the one President Obama asked you to deliver to the White House no later than 7AM on January 4? The one in two columns, with numbered paragraphs, table of contents, footnotes, mathematical formulae, 40 figures, 60 charts, quotations in Arabic, Japanese, and classical Greek, and 15 pages of references in APA style?
Grant Bennet-Alder is right -- "the real answer depends on what work you expect to do with it, and with whom you expect to do this work". There are dozens of word processors for Mac, from the venerable Word to the no less venerable Tex-Edit+. It would pointless to start listing them all, when many of them might be either too little or too much for your needs.
