What kind of programming background do you need to start making iOS apps?

I have zero knowledge of programming. I have done programming about 7 years ago and it was extremely basic stuff and mostly to do with C. I have learnt BASIC language (wonder if its even worth mentioning) in school!! But, I really want to program. Even if it takes a long time. How do I get started??

Your question "What kind of programming background do you need to start making iOS apps?" does not have a single answer. Thanks to the internet, nowadays its possible to start from zero. You can find an answer for even the most basic question on the internet. It just a question of time and effort. If you have
the time
no pressing deadline and a
high frustration tolerance
just go ahead and do it.

  • What kind of view object would I need to create to achieve this ADF form?

I have an entity that has several dates. The dates are stored in a table separate from the entity, each entity date has a date type (open, close, interview, etc) associated with it. The DBAs idea (who else of course!) was to have the flexibility to add new types of dates for entities when needed.
So you have tables like this -
    Table: EntityTable
    Columns: EntityId, EntityName
    Table: DatesTable
    Columns: EntityId, Date, DateTypeCd
I need to display an editable ADF form where I can update the entity and the entity dates
The ADF form would contain something like this
    Entity Name: []
    Opening Date: []
    Closing Date: []
    Interview Date: []
What kind of view object would I need to create to achieve this?

That would be a master-detail relation 1-* between 'entity' and 'entity dates'. If your dba has set up the foreign key association in the db and you use the wizard to create the business objects, jdev pick up the relation and create the correct master detail relation in the vo layer for you.
By the way naming a table 'entity' is not a good idea when working with ADFbc. We all talk about entities when we relate to a business object (in this case a row of a table or entity object or EO). So it's hard to distinguish the two, your specific table 'entiyt' and the common term entity or EO which can be a row of any table.

  • How much MB do you need to update to iOS 6.1.3

How much MB do you need to update to iOS 6.1.3?

You'll need more space to install.
Do you not have enough free storage space?
How much space is used by your Other? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • This month I downloaded the newest version of PAGES.  Now when I try to open the documents made with this program it says "You need a newer version of PAGES to open this document."  I go to the App Store and says it has downloaded.  What to do?

This month I downloaded the newest version of PAGES.  The documents I have typed using this App will now not open and the message says-"You need a newer version of PAGES to open this document.  Could anyone help me with this please.  Thanks.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

You can add the icon of the missing Pages on your Dock or open Pages from the Apple menu > Recent Items list.
Or you can archive Pages 5 so that it doesn't automatically open.
If you are unhappy about this review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store.

  • What kind of graphic card do I need for second screen?

I have a Mac Pro with GTX 680 card that outputs to a 27" Cinema Display and 42" TV. The TV screen is a few frames of, so I understand I need a separate videocard for the TV so I can adjust this with frame offset in FCP.
What kind of card is suitable for this? There is 30m distance from Mac to TV, is this too long for HDMI cable?

I don't know.  My experience with Aja IO card is that's it's more complicated configuring it (at least with fcp7).  I have a friend with a macpro and every time we need to use it, it requires playing around with control panel and the view settings within fcp.  Maybe operator error.  The BlackMagic just usually works although I found with Avid Media Composer 7, if you tried to load material that didn't match the project settings, you could not get the project to every play out through the intensity.  You'd have to create a new project and open your existing bins in the new project.  Took me a while to figure out what was going on.
Aja's support is supposedly much better, but I did get answers via email from blackmagic with the avid issue.  Took a few days, but they did come thru.

  • What Kinde of program should I use for mastering?

I had a litle problem with mastering my songs what I made with Logic Pro X is not enough laud. I need some help that what is a program to use mastering?

You can master your tracks in logic. Bounce the song and import into a fresh logic project, then just apply your mastering processes there. However, mastering is a task that does require a very special skill set and a very good listening environment. Just having the software doesn't make a good master.

    Hi Katrina,
    welcome to thsi forum
    to throw in some €cents...:
    * mini-dv, nothing else
    * with the "big" brands (Sony, Canon, ...) you stay save
    * go to a shop and make some "hands on experience"... Panasonic for example is VERY small for some hands...
    * ask for a firewire-cable, 4/6pin to connect camera with your Mac (no, usb DOESN'T work)
    * that camera doesn't need any effects...- you will add this in iMovie..., so a very basic one is good enough
    * get a second battery and a tripod ;-))
    * follow any other advice given you here in this forum
and, besides, no, vhs camcorder don't work with iM....

  • What kind of cool things can you do with the ipad and macbook combined?

I was wondering what kind of cool things can be done between the macbook pro and the ipad mini. For example syncing and other ways of communication between the two devices.

    How to sync
Enable "Find my iPad" in Settings > iCloud. Put your name on the back. Losing it is not cool.
Make it easy for someone to find you when you misplace it:
Tape a business card to the back.
If that is inelegant then make a pretty label with a phone number so that when you lose it, there is the possibility you can be reunited with it and perhaps meet someone nice as well.
Enable "Find my iPad" in Settings > iCloud. This enables you to send a message or play a loud noise should you misplace it.
Disable "in-app purchases" in Settings > General > Restrictions. This prevents unauthorized or unintentional purchases, some of which are expensive. You will need a password. Don't forget your password.
Sync it to a computer running iTunes. Back up the computer because the iPad is not a backup. If it's a Windows computer, have several backups. Windows computers die with predictable regularity for a number of reasons. Your iPad is synced to one and only one computer at a time, so if its mate is lost then its content will be erased when you replace your computer. Extracting content from your iPad is not trivial and not free.
The Remote app enables you to control your MacBook's iTunes library remotely, along with an AirPort Express, you have a remote control for your stereo.

I need to listen my music in ma stereo car that only plays MP3 files. Do you know what kind of software or device should I use for this task?

    Hello Ekaliman,
Thanks for the question. iTunes should be able to accomplish all of the goals you described, including converting the songs to MP3. For information on how to do so, check out this resource:

  • What Kind of Xserve Setup Do I need (if any)?

    Hello All,
I am running a small film production studio and I have a client that will be having me log and edit in Final Cut Pro over 600+ hours of HD video from miniDV tapes for an upcoming production. I know that I could use several 1TB external drives for this, but that may not be the best idea for reliability of the data and speed. The other obstacle besides the shear size of the data is having it backed up all the time. I have been looking into setting up a single Xserve or Xserve RAID to help with this problem.
The other obstacle is that I will be editing this film from my house and taking my edits to and from LA for review with my client about every 3-4 weeks. I must be able to have access to the footage from pretty much anywhere.
If anyone can offer some advice as how I can best create a setup with an Xserve system or any other sort of system, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank You
    Brian

600 hours of miniDV will be about 7.5TB of storage, plus additional space for edits, revisions, etc.
I wouldn't recommend using multiple external drives for this, so an XServe RAID might be a good bet.
However, the 'access from anywhere' issue is going to be your biggest problem, depending on the network connectivity you have at home. The XServe RAID isn't exactly a portable system, and if you're only connected via DSL or cable (or other typical residential broadband connection) it will take many hours (days, even) to transfer that data over the network.
Without knowing more about the project I'm thinking that you might want an XServe RAID for the base footage storage and edits, plus an external FireWire terabyte drive of some kind - What I'm thinking is that you don't need all the content each time you visit your client, you only need either a portion of the data, or the (hopefully) final output which you can copy to the drive before you leave.
That way you have all the data centrally, plus a copy of the relevant chapters/sections/whatever to present to your client.

  • What kind of DVI cable do I need?

Hi. I want to run video from my PB12 to my plasma TV (I know I need a separate audio cable).
I have the mini DVI to DVI adapter that came with the PB. My question is really, how many pins must the HDMI - DVI cable have? I see so many available with 18 (+1), but my adapter is 24 (+1).
Do I NEED a 24 pin, or can I use the much easier to find 18 pin?
    thanks!

I use the adaptor to transfer the signal to a VGA format and simply bought a VGA cable from monoprice.com. Very good deals on all kinds of cables.
I recently ordered a VGA cable for a friend and they sent me a DVI to HDMI cable by mistake. I bet that would work fine too. It would seem to me that DVI is DVI, and there aren't any optional connectors that will work without all the possible pins in place.....in other words, I don't know for sure about the pin thing...I'd just get a DVI to HDMI, at the length you need, and see if it works.
