What kind of thermal grease for CPU?

Hi everyone,
I dismantled my iMac G4 17" 1.25Ghz in order to change the DVD inside. And here I made the mistake: it was so dusty inside (I bought it second hand from a chain-smoker) that I decided to clean it. In the process, the thermal pipe got moved. So I tried to move it back into place and realized there were pins to align it. Don't ask how, but the metal clip that holds the double-pipe onto the CPU unclipped itself. So the processor was all visible. I decided to clean off the grease on it and apply thermal paste (arcticsilver 5) instead of whatever was there. And now I think it was the wrong stuff: the machine works but as soon as the workload increases, it freezes. If it sits there, idle, it's happy. But if I launch a Quicktime movie and play an iTunes track (70% CPU usage), it kernel panics after 10 minutes. Launch dnetc and it crashes within 3 minutes (95% CPU usage).
So here is my question: what kind of grease is used between the CPU and its thermal pipe? From what I saw, it was more like a grease than a paste. Does anyone know? I spoke to an Apple Center and the only thing they could tell me is that the machine needs a new logicboard. No way, let's do it myself, but with what compound?
Thanks for your help on that one!
Pierre

Pierre,
The Do-It-Yourself Mac: Between the thermal pipe and mating surface is a thin coat of silicon paste (known as thermal paste or heat-sink compound). This paste—available at electronics shops for around $5 a tube—helps eliminate air gaps between the surfaces, so heat goes out the pipe rather than into the iMac.Since it exhibits Kernel Panic behavior, read Resolving Kernel Panics, by Dr. Smoke for some tips.

  • What kind of the ethernet for iMac 27 inches

Hello this is James Lawrence. I wonder to ask you what kind of ethernet for iMac 27" mid 2011  it is like CAT 5E or other?

Cat 5e cables work just fine.  Cat 6 is only needed for true, full gigabit ethernet, which most people don't really need.  If you are transfering large files, music, or video, cat 6 may be worth investing in as the cables are higher priced than cat 5e.  I use cat 5e cables throughout my house and have no problem with my 50 MBS broadband  service on a mid 2011 27" iMac like yours.  The ethernet port will work with 10/100 switches and hubs just as well as 10/100/1000 gigabit units.

    Hi Shannon,
The type of proxy I'm familiar with is at the http connection level and
associated with the networking properties in the JDK, See:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/net/properties.html
Your question may be related to JWS proxies, See:
    http://edocs.bea.com/workshop/docs81/doc/en/workshop/guide/howdoi/howUseTheJavaProxyForAWebService.html
You may want to ask this question in the workshop newsgroup.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi, all;
I try to find out how the java proxy of web service in weblogic server 8.1
works. Suppose I use the java Proxy of a WebSerice in a client application whatever
whithin or outside the application of the web service, does the proxy actually:
    1. translate my java arguments objects in XML to create SOAP msg,
    2. then send the msg across the network, and web service also response SOAP msg,
    3. then proxy translate it into return value of the method call ?
If that is true , the Java Proxy seems very inefficient, right?
Can any body tell me how the proxy works ?

  • What kinda screensaver is good for TFTs and CPU?

I read somewhere that for TFTs screensavers that turn your screen black aren't the best thing (they don't save energy, they use it even more). - Don't ask me for any proofs.
So, which kind of screensaver saves most energy and uses my iMac TFT the least?
    Thanks a lot
    Peter

    Peter,
The best kind of screensaver for TFT's is display sleep.
Screen Savers: Using With Liquid Crystal Displays"Putting the computer to sleep or shutting it down when it won't be used for extended periods is preferred to a screen saver. The Energy Saver control panel has a setting for display sleep that is applicable to both PowerBook and stand-alone flat panel displays such as the Apple Studio Display and Apple Cinema Display.";~)

  • What kind of wrapper Program for Running OWB 10g Packages

    Hi,
We are migrating our mapping from OWB 9.i to OWB 10.g. Earlier we were using a scheduling tool and through that we used to execute the package for the OWB Mapping from SQL Prompt with th below mentioned command at SQL PLUS.
    execute &procname..main(:operating_mode,:audit_level,:max_errors,:commit_frequency,:bulk_size);
Here &procname is the name of the OWB 9.i Package.
Kindly Suggest how do we do this with an OWB 10.g Mapping.

My new classroom is being set up and I have two computers to practice on at this moment. I did try internet sharing and it worked between the main computer and a student computer (that is the main computer was wired to the network, and the student iMac was the client), and this was without a router: the main computer had a wireless network "MacBook" and I connected to it through Airport, and I had perfect access to the internet.
I'm going to sound very naive here but if all I have are the main and three student computers, can't they all just be connected directly to the main computer without a router, like I have done as described above?
But isn't file sharing what I need not internet sharing?

  • My hard drive is failing, need a new one.  What kind should I buy for a Mac osx 10.4.11 Tiger.

Also I have backed up all my data on a mercury elite external hard drive.  But it would not allow me to clone my drive.  Possible due to the error, failing hard drive.  How would I get my data back on the new drive?

You can run you Mac from an external harddrive.  I do not notice much difference when I run from an external drive.
You need to use a coloning program to get the external hd to boot.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

  • What kind of network required for SMS?

Hi everybody, I have a question concerning SMS:
I travel a lot, and SMS is THE way of keeping communication affordable, and it normally works via the normal mobile network incurring just limited charges.
Just now I read somewhere between the lines of some posts, that the iphone needs the EDGE-network for SMSing. That would be a huge disappointment, probably able to keep me from buying the phone, as it would mean that
    1. in countries with no EDGE network there's no SMS using the iphone at all
    2. in foreign countries where there is, it would require data roaming, causing significant charges, making an SMS pointless.
Can anyone please confirm true or false?
    Thanks!

What you have been told is simply not true: SMS is a voice—rather than data—service and standard voice plans support the transmission and reception of short message service messages across most carrier networks. You do not need an optional data plan or access to a data medium such as EDGE to send and receive these messages.
Some plans bundle a defined number of transmissions and receptions into a monthly voice plan fee. Options for additional included SMS messages or unlimited messaging are widely available.

  • What kind of DNG file for DNG profile editor ?

Can somebody help me??? I have a problem to use DNG profile:
I am user of Fujifilm S5Pro, which has RAF file (=raw). The ACR (start from version 3...) and DNG understand my RAF files very well. But DNG profile editor dose not want to open it, even if Adobe DNG Converter 4.5 converts it to DNG file. My workflow is:
    Launch Adobe DNG Converter.exe, => convert RAF to DNG (tryed different settings);
Launch DNG profile editor, => trying to open DNG file => have error???
May be I'm doing in a wrong way? Please advise me.

I tried to do the same on other PC with Vista (fully English). Also update DNG converter up to 4.6. And no success... :-(.
Every time I have the same error: "DNG Profile Editor could not open the selected image. Note that the selected image must be a valid DNG color image."
I could not understand... where is a bug.
Moreover, I took NEF from Nikon D80 and CR2 from Canon 20D and converted them to DNGs by converter 4.6. DNG Profile Editor did not want to open them on both Windows Vista and XP, and made the same error.
Do I really do wrong things? I'm completely lost
    Thanks in advance,

  • Nforce networking optimized for cpu?

hi guys, new to nvidia networking settings.. (i used to be a realtek guy)
what means nforce networking optimized for cpu in the settings?
    TIA

Ive tried both and I dont like active armour cause its not dummy proof enough for me... ...zone alarm is just easier to set up and use.  I assume if you were to understand all of the features and functionality of active armour, then it may be better than zone alarm.  For now, zone alarm does the trick for me.
For anyone using the microsoft firewall, get rid of it and replace it!  It sucks and does nothing to stop internet outgoing traffic and download zone alarm now imo.

  • Qosmio X300-16D - thermal pad/paste solution for CPU and Nvidia MCP

Can anyone suggest a good (specific) thermal solution for the Qosmio X300-16D CPU and Nvidia MCP?
I ask because there is a slight complication with the 16D (an SLI setup)... the heatsink for the CPU and Nvidia MCP are connected in the same thermal module, but while the CPU heatsink is screwed down, the Nvidia MCP chip is not - so there is a large gap between that chip and the heatsink.
I'm guessing some form of thermal pad should be used here rather than grease/paste? Does anybody know what thermal pad has been used by Toshiba for this, or point me to a high quality replacement that is suitable to be used?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi
As far as I know the thermal grease 776 (part num: K000055600) could be used.
But there are different cooling pends as mentioned by Akuma.
There is an thermal fan 1 for DUAL-VGA (K000061940) and thermal fan 2 for dual VGA (K000061950) as well.
I assume both are for SLI configuration.
There are also some other cooling modules for VGA (VGA THERMAL MODULE-1-GT-NB9E K000065560 and VGA THERMAL MODULE-2-NB9E-W/O TMA K000065560)
You can google for these part numbers Found all in internet
