What kind of weather is it okay to use your ibook in?

Of course I don't mean rain, snow (or mist or fog) or meteors. I live in Chicago and sometimes my work involves me working in a unheated enclosed area. I have power, just no heat. It's starting to get cold out and sometimes I want to use my iBook in this unheated enclosed area. Is there a point that I should not use my laptop? 30 or 40 degrees?
Thanks
Chris

The big problem is that the hard drive may not be tolerant of low temperatures if it's not already running and generating its own heat (i.e. cold start at low temps). Cold temps can do a real job on the heads and bearings. Acceptable storage temps are always more extreme than acceptable operating temps. The rest of the electronics should actually do better in cold temps. Semiconductors switch faster and use less power if they can be kept cooler. Of course artificial cooling methods would use more power than they would save. Some extreme systems have been cryogenically cooled to heavily overclock them. Of course this means a small tower hooked up to a larger box, which effectively turns the system into a freezer.
It might not be a case of catastrophic failure, but the lubrication might not work too well when cold. I've seen some people who are using HDs as MP3 storage devices for their cars. Some in cold weather have problems starting them up in cold weather, although it depends on the individual drive. There are a few awfully expensive and low capacity drives designed for extreme heat and cold.

What kind of iphone5 shoud I buy for using in China? The contract free, unlocked one listed for $649 is OK for me? Thanks!

China phones should be purchased there as they use unique carrier settings. Phones from other countries may not work properly.
Also, the iPhone warranty is not international and won't be valid outside the country where the phone was purchased.

... it shows the back panels of 3 models, and if yours is the 3rd, that's it.
In this case, you can really only input sounds digitally. The cheapest solution would be to get an iMic USB device (maybe that's what your husband had - look at the pic. Older models were more like silvery), it comes for < 40 $, and you can plug a microphone into it (with the small 1/8" plug). Not super-great sound, but for that mic it should be good enough.

My ipod 5th gen says it is connected to the internet and i can go on apps that require an internet connection but whe i try to use the weather or another app that uses your current location it cant find me???

If you open the Maps app where does that say you are located?
For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

  • What kind of  "addActionLister" for JTabbedPane should I use??

    Hi, friends:
I have a Jpanel called panel, contains several JTabbedPanes,
    such as tpane_1, tpane_2, tpane_3, tpane_4, tpane_5 etc,
When I click tpane_1, I should add what kind of "addActionLister" to
    Trap this event "click tpane_1"??
And When I click tpane_2, I should add what kind of "addActionLister" to
Trap this event "click tpane_2" also?? And so on??
    Please help.
    Thanks
    sunny

As you know, JTabbedPane has a method called
    void addChangeListener(ChangeListener l)
which you can use to register an object with tabbed pane that will be informed whenever a tab is selected.
JTabbedPane.addChangeListener needs an object that implements the javax.swing.event.ChangeListener interface.
Further, as you know, ChangeListener has a single method called stateChanged:
    void stateChanged(ChangeEvent e)
Use this method to react appropriately whenever the selected tab is changed.
You can also use method int getSelectedIndex() to get selected index and from that you can see selected tab.

  • What kind of a program did HP company use to compress its Software?

    Hi,
I have noticed that some Most HP software can be downloaded as standalone programs  which are  compressed files (like what is in this screen shot below)  which will need to be extracted before being installed?
Thus, I am wondering what kind of Data compression do those files have? I didn't see that WinRAR, WinZip or other achieving programs recognised such files.
When I open compressed file above, then it was extracted into a folder called 'swsetup' in this path C:\swsetup
My question is What kind of program did HP company use to compress those files?

    Huffer wrote:
I believe it may be a .tar file. I am able to extract the files in the SP file in Linux using good old tar gunzip into its various components. It is turned into a self-extractor which runs as a DOS executable.
    Thanks a lot,
I am using a Windows 7 Home premium 64Bit, I have built-in Winzip with Windows 7. Also, I have a WinRar a third-party archiving program be installed on my windows. But neither of them recognised the HP compressed files, or otherwise the look of HP compressed file would look like 'WinRaR' icon.
Yes, when I clicked on that File name(softpaq): sp68201-V(7.4.45.4), I saw that file was extracted into a folder called 'swsetup' under this path C:\swsetup', Then the setup showed to me.  However, I still don't know what program extracted that compressed HP file? Could you kindly enlighten me?

As long as it's USB, any one will work (If you're only using it for your Mac, then use Disk Utility to Partition it as GUID/HFS+).

  • What kind of cd/dvd cleaner can I use for my Macbook Pro optical drive

Can I buy any kind of cd/dvd cleaner at like best buy, or is there a specialized cleaner made only for Mac drives?
I (like most people) have been having problems with my drive and thought cleaning it might solve the issue.
    Thanks.

I have had issues for months with my MBP not reading some dual-layer DVDs.
After much trepidation I just used a cleaning disc I bought from the supermarket.
Lo and behold! My Mac now reads discs that it would previously spit out or register as blank.

  • What kind of usb does the new iPad use?

Wondering if they bumped it up to USB2 or not.
    Thanks

Wow, never would I have expected such a quick reply. Thanks, people. But maybe I should be a bit more clear about what I'm asking and why.
I'm a musician who is involved in recording, making music, and sometimes field recording. I have a first generation iPad. The 30-pin dock, if I understand correctly, supports a USB protocol, USB1, but not USB2. USB 1 is not fast enough to support stereo recording at high bit rates (ie 24bit/44.1 khz). I was wondering if they bumped the spec up to the USB 2 protocol, whoch would allow manufacturers to design recording interfaces to handle the higher bit rates.
    Thanks

  • What kind of adapter do I need to use microphone with G4?

My son has G4, and I want to record an mp3 using Garage Band. Grandpa gave us a really nice microphone, but it has a 1/4" plug on the end.
The G4 does not have a jack for that plug. Is there an adapter or converter that we can use? My son said something like plug to USB or plug to firewire.
I spoke with Best Buy and Radio Shack, and neither could help me. Where would I find the answer to this question?

  • What kind of virus protection should I be using with OSX 5.8?

All of this virus talk lately has me nervous.  Can someone with some knowledge let me know what I should be using to protect my computer?  Do the regular software updates take care of this or should I have something else I'm using independent of the updates?

Well, it may be getting some updates such as iTunes, but you are not getting system software updates like Java updates which is what you need for the Flashback threat.
Antivirus software for Macs is still overrated.  Something like Flashback is probably evolving as fast as the antivirus updaters can update, and frankly I think most of what you hear is hype.  The more hype the antivirus software writers can make, the more they sell.  Macs are still pretty safe and antivirus software on a Mac is really to protect you from passing something from a PC using friend to another PC using friend, but not for something you could get.  Yes, there is the occasional malware threat, but 95% of protection against that is just being smart.  For the other stuff you can take it on a case-by-case basis.  The Flashback issue is the only thing I have seen in about the last 12 years that has actually made me in any way change how I use my Mac.  I have disabled Java in my browsers.  No biggie. Frankly I don't think I use any sites that require Java.
If you really feel you need AV, check out the free version of Sophos, or ClamXAV, but agin those are really just stopping you from passing on Windows viruses.

  • What kind of vocal compression is Christina Grimmie using to get this sound for her voice?

It's been driving me crazy I can't figure this out. I'm not an audio engeener of any kind but I'd like to be. I help record my girlfriend's youtube videos but I fail to acheive to make her voice sound as great as this. I'll just kinda list some of the equipment I have if it's any help. I'm also pasting both Chrstina Grimmie's videos and my girlfriend Madi's videos here as a reference. I really appreciate the help this forum gives.
I use Logic Pro X - Focusrite Pro 40 - an AKG 420. I use other insturments as well.
    Christina Grimmie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA4fdiOqNMw
    Madi Denton - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i13pUCBiHq0
    Thank you for the help.

It's more a combination of reverb, Eq & compression - reverb especially (large ballad style hall or plate). The Christina Grimmie video has had some mixing/ post production - you can hear when she's talking in the intro, the voice sounds very different to her performance, (suggesting that the audio was recorded separately into Logic, then synced to picture).
I'm assuming you're recording video & audio direct to your camcorder (via the Focusrite) - you could try experimenting with some of the channelstrip performance presets (like "Female ambient lead vocal"), though you'll need to tweak. A better solution would be to record the piano to one stereo track, vocal to another mono track, then spend time mixing, & finally syncing to video. It sounds like you're monitoring the piano from it's in built speakers (though I could be wrong) - I'd recommend using it's outputs, so that the mic doesn't pick it up.
A few other recording tips : I'd move Madi & the piano a little further away from that wall, & possibly hang a nice rug behind to reduce the boxiness. I'd also move the mic a little closer to get a more intimate sound. Lastly, make sure Madi is singing straingt into the mic - it looks a little off axis which can seriously change the tonality. As a rule, you can't go far wrong if you're singing straight at the logo on most cardiod mics. A small pop shield or windshield would also help with sibilance (which is even quite prominent in Christina's performance).
    Best of luck!

  • What kind of filter or mask should I used?

I'm using Fireworks CS4 and have an image of thick muds splattered against our car. I'm creating a family video and am looking to creater a logo for the video where it looks like the video name is written in text in the mud. I've tried applying an inner bevel filter, but it looks poor.
What type of filter or mask can I apply to give the text depth and shadows?
Heck, I'd be willing to pay for some help at this point.
Please let me know if you have any ideas as I'm well beyond my skillo level on this one.
    Thanks all.

Well...I don't really have a lot of time, right now. But I think you can do something nifty looking without a whole lot of effort.
Here are a few things you could try...
Put some text over your image. Use a wide font, like Impact. Move the text to the part of the image you'd like to have inside the text (or move the image). Select the image and copy it (Ctrl-C is fine). Select the text and go to menu Edit > Paste Inside (Ctrl-Shift-V). You can use this muddy text object over any image for a video title.
The next step is to choose a font that's more interesting than Impact. The first one I linked you to has the advantage of looking like splatters, but the disadvantage of being difficult to read. Look around dafont in the graffiti or distressed themes and see if anything catches your eye. Check the licensing if you're doing anything commercial.
Taking this method one step further, it would be nice to take advantage of some of Fireworks' fancy strokes. For this, you'll need to convert the text to paths. Select the text, menu Text > Convert to Paths. Duplicate this object. Paste your image inside the upper object. On the lower object, apply a stroke. (See example below, Layer 2.)
Hmm...example time. In the bottom example (Layer 3) the stroke is a Textured Air Brush with a Vein texture (unfortunate that the stroke name is also an effect). This is a Fireworks .png, it's just resized by the forum software:
    Good luck!
