What mac do I need to edit AVCHD in FCE?

My G5 powerpc won't cut it, I get it. So, if I have the canon vixia hf11 how much computing power do I need to edit AVCHD? What mac will make it work reasonably well.

The current Intel based iMac, MacPro and MacBookPro models will all be fine.
The MacBook is a bit low end for FCE and the MacBookAir not appropriate at all.
As for configuration, I suggest 2-4GB RAM (FCE's sweet spot) and the largest hard drive you can afford (you will need it).
Budget for at least one 7200rpm external FireWire or eSata drive (depending on which Mac you purchase) for your videos. Also, if you choose a MacBookPro, upgrade it to a 7200 rpm hard drive.

I w'd like to edit my AVCHD video on a mac. I am planning to buy a powerfull desktop mac, do i need any editing card (eg. matrox lee), AGP card for real time rendering ? or final cut express is enough ? Thanks

You only have one card being sold, so there aren't any real choices.

  • What software do i need to convert AVCHD mts/mts2 files to import to iMovie

What software do i need to convert AVCHD mts/mts2 files to import to iMovie

As Kirk says, if you have your camera, you can attach it directly.
Further, if you preserved the entire file structure of your camera (not just the .mts files, but also the folders on the camera), then you can import from that via FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA ARCHIVE.
When you import from a camera, it is recommended that you keep a camera archive so you always have the originals available.
If you have the .mts files out of context, you will need a third party app to convert. Two that I know of are ClipWrap and Voltaic HD. You should convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec. And then use FILE/IMPORT/MOVIE.

  • Can the mac mini i7, 8gigs ram,  edit avchd 1920/1080p without having to convert it?

Can the mac mini i7, 8gigs ram,  external FW800 drive, edit avchd 1920/1080p without having to convert it?
Can you scrub the TL at 5x speed and not have it stutter?

By default it converts it to ProRes 422, though you can specify other codecs.
    Why convert it?
Although FCP X can handle AVCHD natively, AVCHD being a "delivery" codec is not really suitable for editing.
ProRes is designed specifically for ease of editing especially with complex effects and colour correction.
If your editing is going to be fairly basic you can get away with leaving your media as AVCHD.
Note also that an hour of ProRes is around 50GB !

  • What mac app will allow "direct editing" of an mp3 w/o recompressing?

the issue is that I'm using a low quality (poor mic) low resolution file (32kbps--which for lectures is doable) and need to edit it significantly. i have previously tried soundtrack pro 2, converting it to aif, editing, tried some processing to see if I could improve listenability, with some success... but when it is compressed back to mp3 at a reasonable resolution for download(these clips are 45mins plus in length), it introduces a lot of unwanted noise. even with all processing removed, leaving me with the original upconverted/edited file to recompress, I'm still unhappy with the results. so I figured I should find a program that would allow me to directly edit the mp3 file and then save out the changes. after googling, I thought Audacity might do this, but no advantage over STP.
apparently, windows has mp3cut and linux has WINE... if there a mac equivalent.

i'm short on time, but basically the problem is not that simple. converting a low quality/low resolution to AIFF will give you the same quality of sound as the original low quality file. once you begin editing the file it will require recompression to go back to mp3. recompression can retain the same listening quality provided you keep the resolution high enough, which then results in a much larger file. these files are long (45+ mins each) which make them larger than wanted. by being able to edit the mp3 directly, it doesn't require recompression, it simply removes the unwanted data and keeps the unedited data the same. it would be like using an mp3 splitter application, only you are making many edits. i can see this as doable and mp3trimmer might work if i can get it to show the waveform large enough to do the edits. I'm told there is a PC version which i am going to try, just to see if it will do the editing that i need to do, in which case I will be loading windows on my machine.

  • What Mac OS is needed to use Fifrefox 4, for crying out loud? This is not documented anywhere! I installed it, and, upon launching, I was told I it is not supported by my computer (Power Mac G5, OS 10.4)

    No need for further details.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • What type of mac do i need for home use to watch and edit videos

What type / power of MAC do i need for home use to watch and edit vedeos as well as basic computer work?

Any of the new Macs for home - iMac or MacBook Pro are even fine. You don't need a 65lb workstation tower. If you want a tower for how well and long they hold up, and can be upgraded, that is another matter and fine and might be overkill at first.
Even the base Mac Pro will get you there.

  • Is there a Pages for MAC OS 10.7.x? If not, what is the alternative? Concrete issue is that I have received a .pages document and need to edit. Many thanks

Is there a Pages for MAC OS 10.7.x?
If not, what is the alternative?
Concrete issue is that I have received a ".pages" document and need to edit. I am running Mac Pro with OS X 10.7.
    Many thanks

It is important that you determine if the .pages document originated from Pages ’08, Pages ’09, Pages v1.7.2 (IOS 6), or was exported as Pages ’09 from Pages v5+ on OS X Mavericks. If it meets one of these criteria, then you can edit the .pages document on your Lion machine with Pages ’09 from the iWork ’09 DVD. Pages documents can not be opened with TextEdit, but can be viewed with Preview.
On the otherhand, if the .pages document was created with Pages for iCloud beta, Pages v2.2.1 (IOS 7), or Pages v5+ on Mavericks, then your only recourse is to edit the document with Pages for iCloud beta. Since Fall 2013, Apple changed the .pages document format into something even more malevolently proprietary. Apple word processing products since this timeframe, are subsets of the Pages ’09 features/functionality, and will filter out content they do not support.
A Pages ’09 document is usually a compressed (zip) folder archive that looks like a regular file to the Finder. The newer Pages family of products only write out a package that to the Finder, also appears to be a regular file, but in reality it is a folder. The newer Pages documents must be zipped before placed on non-Apple filesystems.

  • What is better for home movie editing, ipad or mac book?

i have a panasonic hdc-sd90 camcorder and my current laptop is woefully underpowered to run any of the hd editing software so i have been thinking of an upgrade and this seems to be a good reason to do so.  I also am self employed and require software that i can do basic invoicing on a spreadsheet.  I like the idea of portablilty so the ipad is appealing but i don't know if it is powerful enough to enable me to edit my home movies adequately, plus the exporting issues that seem to come with the ipad (although i have heard there are apps you can get that help with this and printing documents as well from the ipad would be an advantage)  If the new ipad is not able to edit the home movies then what mac book would be best for my needs?
i am relatively new to apples products and growing gradually more frustrated with windows based pc's as time goes on, hence the temptation to switch to apple.

  • What equipment do i need to set-up a home editing station?

i have been approached by my job to do some editing for them. they are going to pay for me to take a final cut pro class (i graduated from film school in 1998 - right before the big switch was made from flat beds to AVID). Any suggestions of the kind of mac i would need, memory, loading footage, playback monitor, screen, etc?
    Thanks.

What kind of format will you be working with?
    HD? HDV????? DV? Beta?
I'd buy the biggest baddest mac you can afford - 2 gigs memory is fine unless you can swing 4. Fill the 4 bays with at least 500gig drives (but....)
The rest will depend on what format you will be using.

Audacity 1.2.5 is an audio editor in which you can assemble and edit your recordings: it's free. I don't think it would burn CDs - you would have to reimport the finished recording into iTunes and burn from there.
Amadeus Lite is $24.99 in the Mac App Store and is in my opinion a better product: it can burn your audio CD directly.
If this is a one-off job you might as well use Audacity: if you are planning on doing this sort of thing at all often you would probably be better off either with Amadeus Lite or Amadeus Pro ($59.99) though this latter may well be over-specified for you as it includes multi-track editing.

  • What's hardware should upgrade for Using Premiere CS4 to editing (AVCHD)m2ts file?

What's hardware or software should upgrade for Using Premiere CS4 to editing (AVCHD)m2ts file?
1st question: when i try to do editing by using Premiere CS4 AVCHD sequence timeline, the edting monitor seems not smooth (like wearing goggles) & delay, and when i use AME to encode m2ts file (which not yet edit) to AVI file (about 1 hour), it take 2h 13min to finish, is it normal?
2nd question: i use mpeg2 HD 1440 file to do eding, the edting monitor also not very smooth but better than using m2ts file, after editing done, i try to encode these mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited about long 1 hr) to a New file mpeg2 1440 X 1080i HQ or even mpeg2 Pal DV HQ file, the encoding was not runthe encoding after wait for half an hour. How many hours it take usually????
3rd question: i use m2ts file video file to export as a Bitmap, 1 frame 1 picture bitmap, it take long time too, about 1 or 2min to finish encoding, if i export more than 1 picture, it take even more time, i have experienced it, 3 or 4 pictures need about 10 or 15 min to finish encoding. i used to using mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited file) to export frame as picture, it not run the encoding at all. WHY ????
i'm new in Premiere CS4,so i got many question about Premiere CS4, usually i use Premiere Pro 1.5 version
my computer is: Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU
                             E7400 @ 2.80 GHz
                             2.80 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM
Graphic Card: ATI Radeon X1650 series
2 Hard Disks in my computer (C Drive is 300 GB (not sata) , D Drive is 500 GB sata)
    4th Question: Premiere CS5 & Premiere CS4 which one is better ???
5th Question: What's different ATI Radeon and NVIDIA Card, which is better, which u suggest to. What is different Graphic Card and Video Card ?? Should i install HD Video Card ????

I don't think a core-2 will work very well with AVCHD... you need at least an Intel i7 920... or whatever is current
My CS5/AVCHD 1st Impressions http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652694?tstart=0 includes a link to the computer I built... since the GTX 285 is no longer sold, I would now go with a GTX 460 or whatever is the current "best bang for the buck" - AND I would buy 4Gig-by-3Sticks memory to be able to expand from 12Gig to 24Gig if needed
For my home hobbyist, family movies (which means that I am not trying to recreate Star Wars with video effects or many layers) AVCHD editing is "as smooth as spreading warm butter on hot toast" (also the MP4 video from wife's Flip camera)
My 3 hard drives are configured as...
    1 - 320G WD Win7 and all programs
2 - 320G WD Win7 swap file and PPro projects
3 - 1T WD all video files... read and write

  • What mac mini should i get to edit 1080p dslr (Canon 60d) home movies with imovie

    Hi
I have a lot of 1080p (25fps) footage from a Canon 60D dslr (SD card) and footage from an old Sony MiniDV (firewire). Which I want to edit down.
I have two monitors24" Full HDs, so am looking to get a Mac Mini to do this editing (using Imovie). I dont need fcp. Its purely editing down footage into short home movies..
Out of the two mac mini's (the one with the Radeon HD and the one with the slightly slower i5 and Intel HD 3000 graphics) is it worth the extra £200. Or will the $699 model do the job?
I'm unsure if the GPU & RAM increase will make a noticable difference. I have no problem upping the ram myself.

Any of them will be fine for what you what you want. I have a 2009 Mac mini and it can handle FCP no worries. Make sure you get a decent hard drive and memory though. Although you may just want to run iMovie, final cut pro is very good and easy to use. I use the mojo plugin by red giant which does wonders for skin tones.
I use canon 7d video on mine
