Please advise some specs for mac and screen to do FCP.
Not for broadcast, more for client presentations and some 30 sec ads - maybe.
Let's say we've got about 4-8K US to spend. (Dont spend it all !)
Thanks guys...

  • Advice on what Mac to get? Thinking about either a Mac Pro or iMac...

I am a graphic designer. I have a Power Mac G5 (older model before Intel) at home. I love it! Want to upgrade but it works for now. Anyways at work (I am the only designer) everyone uses a PC (including me) but I am getting my Christmas gift. They will be ordering me a new Mac! Problem is I'd like some advice as to what I should get. I was originally thinking of the Mac Pro G5 (tower) but then started wondering if an iMac would be a better option. Most of what I do is Adobe Creative Suite programs (but currently I have so many problems with it taking forever to open and save some of the files I am working with especially in Illustrator I am working on a map that is about 21,000 KB). We will be upgrading to CS4. I want to get something that will last for several years and speed up my time. I become impatient when having to wait on my computer to save or edit something. Also, is there any advice on connecting to a windows network. I am not an IT type and everyone here is familiar to Windows. Thanks!

Mac Pro is the only answer. And like already said, hold on for end January and MacWorld Expo to see what might come along. Intel promises great things in the next few months, the floating point arithmetic spec for the new Intel Nehalem processors show nearly a 100% increase in speed from the current top-end Penryn processors:
    http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/processors/world-exclusive-in tel-s-dual-socket-nehalem-ep-platform-benchmarked-487131
And you may start to see 4-core processors even in the iMacs. This is the Intel way forward, more cores, 6 cores, 8 cores, up to 80 cores, but little increase in clock speed over 3GHz.
Can't promise Mac Pro will get the new processors in January, could be Snow Leopard time, a very late xmas present then.

  • HT1414 When updating my iphone with new software it came up on screen with the cable and itunes sign (which is what I should get when restoration has been completed) yet it is still saying restore. I have tried 3 times and the screen won't change. HELP!

When updating my iphone with new software it came up on screen with the cable and itunes sign (which is what I should get when restoration has been completed) yet it is still saying restore. I have tried 3 times and the screen won't change. HELP!

If the sign does not go away it has not completed the restore. So you are incorrect when you say it "keeps completing the restore" if that message is still displayed.
Do you get an error message? If so, what is the error number?

  • PCIE slots 1 & 3 & what we should get, X16+X16, or X16+X8?

Hello, I always look for new reports from customers that got this Mobo from New Egg like I did.
I just read a customers report who stated he has his GPU's in PCIE slots 1 & 3 & he is getting X16 + X8.
I dont know how he knows this, I wish I did.  How can we tell? & is this true?. What slots should we use for 2 GPU's in SLI mode so we get X16 + X16?

  • What Mac should I get for basic Photoshop usage?

I'm hoping to tap into the vast resources/opinions here.
I'm planning to get a Mac for my office. It will be use primarily for basic Photoshop usage. Maybe making some movies from iPhoto. The other usage would be normal ones like web surfing.
Please suggest a desktop Mac first, and a laptop Mac 2nd.
Which Mac model would be most cost-effective and doesn't need upgrading every year?
    Thanks a lot!
    Mavis

Mavis, the answer to your question really depends on what you mean by 'basic' Photoshop use.
Bearing in mind that Photoshop has been used by professionals in graphics and design houses for many years, typically working on hardware that is substantially less powerfull than a Mac mini, there is no reason to beleieve that even the entry-level Mac can't sucessfully be used for this kind of work, and those who suggest otherwise simply haven't tried it. However, there are some things that you need to keep in mind when using this software: the first is that Photoshop runs better the more memory you have, the second is that Photoshop files can require large amounts of storage, and the third is that the most recent version tends to place heavy demand on the processor - meaning that the faster the processor the better it runs.
Thus, any Mac you buy for Photoshop use should ideally be equipped with 1Gb RAM rather than any less. You should also consider getting either the largest internal hard drive you can, or an external firewire drive for extra file storage.
A Mac mini with 1.42GHz processor and a 1Gb RAM upgrade would certainly be sufficient, even for fairly demanding Photoshop work. The internal 80Gb drive for that model would give you a reasonable amount of space for files, though you would be wise to add a larger external drive too if the work you are doing is at all crucial. The same system would also be capable of your iPhoto work too. If your use is more casual, then the 1.25GHz mini would be enough, but again you'd need the 1Gb RAM upgrade.
If your intended use is more at the commercial end of Photoshop use, then the chances are that even though a mini would be sufficient, you'd be better with an iMac or G5 tower, simply because for pro-level work, these systems are faster and permit smoother and more productive workflow.
It also has to be said that no Mac will need upgrading each year, unless your level of use or your needs of that system change dramatically. A system you buy today will remain just as functional into the future. In other words, the best way to minimize the risk of having to upgrade in the forseable future is to work out exactly what you want the system for and buy a system that meets your present (and projected future) needs.

  • What Mac should i get for serious Audio recording, Video editing and Graphic's?

Hey im new to Macs and i want to upgrade to one. My question is what one?.. My current system is not powerfull enough to handle what i am doing and i want to upgrade. I plan on using the mac for serious music recording with protools or cubase, video editing and effects with adobe premiere pro and after effects and graphics and web type stuff the rest of the adobe collection.. ex photoshop, dreamweavor, flash, illistrator, etc. So pretty much i need it to handle the adobe cs5.5 master collection and a music recording daw without bogging down. I do serious music recording and video editing and effects that need power behind it and runs smoothly. Any tips, tricks, advise, etc would be greatly appreachated!. Btw im a college student and plan on getting the discount prices in the adobe collection and hopefully the mac and would like to get the best quality computer for the best price!
    Thanks!

Buying refurbs from Apple is a great idea - except for my current iMac, all my Macs have been refurbished. However, I would only get a factory refurb from Apple - they come with the same warranty as new units and you can buy Applecare to extend that to a total of 3 years. And, as far as I know, the Apple online store is the only place where you can get factory refurbs.

  • What Mac should I get?

I currently have a 2010 13" MacBook Pro. I am using it for Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and the occasional Flash, InDesign & FCP (All Adobe CC, FCP7) . As you may already know, this computer is not powerful enough to run all of this (I have already upgraded to 8GB RAM).
My absolute top budget is $2,000 with tax, and I'd like to spend about $1,500 if possible. I already have a 23" external monitor, so I may be okay with 13 inch, but would prefer 15 inch (if that is not possible, that is fine). I am also eligible for the education discount, as I am in high school.
The options I have been looking at are:
    Top-Spec 13" MacBook Air (1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel i7, 512GB SSD, 8GB 1600MHz RAM) Total: $1,897.67 with tax.
    Apple Refurbished 2011 15" cMBP (1680*1050 Antiglare, 2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel i7, 4GB 1333MHz RAM, 750GB HDD @ 5400RPM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 w/ AMD Raedon HD 6670M w/ 1GB memory) Total: $1,734.92 with tax. This has been on apple.com for about a week.
    Apple Refurbished 2012 15" cMBP (Glossy screen, 2.3GHz Quad-Core Intel i7, 4GB 1600MHz RAM, 500GB HDD @ 5400RPM, NVIDA GeForce 650M w/ 512MB memory) Total: $1,572.17 with tax.
Base-Spec 15" Late 2013 rMBP (2.0GHz Quad Core Intel i7, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 256GB SSD, Intel Iris Pro) Total: $2062.42 with tax. [I know this is a little over budget, but if it's truly worth it, it's a consideration]
Top Spec 13" Late 2012 rMBP (2.6GHz Dual Core Intel i5, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 512GB Flash, Intel Iris) Total: $1,843.42 with tax
    Top-Spec 13" Late 2013 rMBP w/ processor upgrade (2.8GHz Dual Core Intel i7, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 512GB Flash, Intel Iris) Total: $2038.72 with tax.
Top Spec 13" Late 2013 rMBP w/ RAM upgrade (2.6GHz Dual Core Intel i5, 16GB 1600MHz RAM, 512GB Flash, Intel Iris) Total: $2038.72 with tax
If you were in my position, which one would you purchase?
PS: I could not get AppleCare immediately if I was to purchase a $2k computer, but I would get it before the year ends

    Hi a,
Base-Spec 15" Late 2013 rMBP (2.0GHz Quad Core Intel i7, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 256GB SSD, Intel Iris Pro) Total: $2062.42 with tax. [I know this is a little over budget, but if it's truly worth it, it's a consideration]
This would be my first pick because of the latest generation quad core i7, but it's got only a 256GB HD, too small for most people's needs.
Thus, this would be my first pick, also saving $500:
    Apple Refurbished 2012 15" cMBP (Glossy screen, 2.3GHz Quad-Core Intel i7, 4GB 1600MHz RAM, 500GB HDD @ 5400RPM, NVIDA GeForce 650M w/ 512MB memory) Total: $1,572.17 with tax.

  • What Mac to get for Final Cut Studio?

I've been doing most of my video editing for the last year or so in Sony Vegas on a PC. I'm looking to get into it a bit more seriously and want to make the switch to Final Cut Studio.
Can I run it on a Macbook Pro? Can I run it WELL on a Macbook Pro? Currently I'm running Sony Vegas on a PC with a Q9350 quad-core CPU, 4gb ram, and an 8800GT graphics card, and I'm not fully satisfied with the way it runs (encoding times are fine, but it's difficult to preview within the software with any semi-complex effects added). What should I be looking for in terms of processing speed and whatnot here? Could I get away with the 13 or 15 inch Macbook pros and still run things well?
Hard drive size is not an issue, as everything will be archived to a server.

This isn't the thread in post in.

It depends on which MBP, what type of video you are editing, and other factors.
Remember as well that FCS3 2009 includes FCP, DVDSP, Compressor, Color, Motion, and Cinema Tools, some of which are GPU based in part.

  • What Mac should I upgrade/update to if I'm using CC Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator?

I've been using a 24" iMac (originally purchased in mid-2006) to do graphic design with Adobe Creative Cloud, primarily Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator. I am also starting to do some very ametuer video prep (like iMovie) etc. With just Photoshop and Indesign alone, what is the minimum Mac I should upgrade to, if I am still concerned about performance, but budget and mobility could come into play too? For instance would the 13.3" Mac Book Pro with Intel Graphics be sufficient for doing my usual print design, with a little iMovie thrown in? At that price, I could afford a big display to plug into when I am at my office desk.
I like the idea of mobility (which I haven't had before with the big iMac), but don't want to notice a horrible lag in performance if I get a weaker machine. The guy at PeachMac said that when it came to display the Retina (in the Macbook Pro, 13.3 in edition) made a high difference despite the lack of a dedicated graphics processor. I don't do heavy-duty, memory-intensive graphics work but about once every two years anyway, and my iMac only has 2GB of RAM to begin with. I just want to make sure that true designers who have switched from older iMac machines to Macbook Pro's (not the most expensive models) didn't regret it when trying to run Photoshop, et al.
(My absolute budget is "no more than $2,000" which is why I am considering the new iMac vs. the MacBook Pro 13.3" and getting a nice external display.)
    Thanks!

  • What I should get to start developing j2me

Hello. I was wondering if somebody could tell me what they think is the best software development environment for j2me on a mac with osx 10.4? I'm looking for free software so whatever that entails. I will also be testing my midlets across a wide variety of phone manufacturers.

I suggest you install Apache Tomcat server for your JSPs and servlets. Then, put your database configuration information in the appropriate tomcat *.xml file. Read up on JDBC to determine how to communicate with your database.
I suggest your first project be MVC design as follows:
presentation layer: JSP/JSTL. They display data from request scope, and submit user input back to the controller servlet. They dont contain business or database logic.
control layer: A single servlet that takes in all submits from JSP pages, calls business logic (passing user data to it as necessary). Puts data retrieved from business logic in request scope. Dispatches to the appropriate JSP page. Does not contain/generate presentation logic, business logic, or database logic.
business layer: Java objects that take in request from the control layer, calls database layer for database data, does any additional processing of the data (if any), passes it to the control layer. Does not contain logic from other layers.
database layer: takes requests from business layer, gets data from database via sql. Does not contain logic from other layers. Only layer that deals with sql.
After you know the above very well, you can look into frameworks such as Spring.

  • What Mac should I look at?

    Hi all,
I'm interested in getting a "new" Mac. I'm looking at a slighly old or refurbished Mac given the tough econonmic climate for me personally. I currently use a MacBook 13" from late 2006, and I think I got a lot of milage out of it, I often have referred it to an expensive netbook, and I have realized recently it was a lower end notebook. I know a lot of the Apple hardware for the Macs, I'm struggling to decide my next Mac based on what my future applications I will be using the Mac looking ahead
I am doing a lot of the following recently (or starting to plan future uses:)
Editing RAW photos with my DSLR camera
Using virtual machines on a desktop level to test out servers, app severs, and even using it for old DOS gaming with VMware's Fusion, ideally running at least two at once
Potentially doing Standard Def digital video editing with Final Cut Pro.
Continuing to use the argumentively best Mac OS X, Snow Lepoard (10.6) probably beyond its EOL.
I was looking at a quad core Mac Pro, but recently I was siding to lean towards a MacBook Pro, even though I carry my iPad and iPhone almost all the time.
    I have a few questions:
Are the MacBook Pros anywhere near a "desktop replacement"?
Does the CPU overheat or the fan goes off all the time? (hopefully a lot less if I am using a higher end notebook)
Dual Display: according to the Mactracker app, both the MacPro and the MBP support dual display.  Does the MacPro support something like a quad display? When that term applies to the MBP, does it count the built in display and one external display or can I actually use 2 external displays?
My question is am I better off using a MacPro for more hardware reliablity or is the MacBook Pro more of a want to carry a Mac wherever I go by cutting corners for convience?
I'm looking at my next Mac to last for the next 5 to 7 years.
Appreciate in advance for answers, and if I didn't make any sense, please chime in.
    Thanks!

The answer for your indicates are the Mac Mini, which you didnt mention.
You said youre on a budget.
A current maxed out non Retina macbook Pro (just discontinued) is almost identical specs to a current quadcore mac Mini
havent you considered a Mac mini?
I got a couple macbook Pro, 2 mac mini, Imac and macbook Air.   Love the Air best of all of them, but the mac minis are just inexpensive fast workhorses
Mac Mini was recently rated "most popular desktop computer EVER"

  • What Mac should I purchase for our large iPhoto library?

My name is Mike.  We have an iMac from ~ 2005/2006.  It's the first one wit hthe Quad-Core CPU from Intel.  It's body is white.
It is still solid for everything but iPhoto; iPhoto's now quite slow and frustrating to use.
iPhoto is generally ok viewing photos, but it's really slow when I add text descriptions to the pictures.  I add the text to help find the photos later... mostly via Smart albums, and also via the Search function within iPhoto.
We are still on iLife 09 (maybe 08... before Faces & Places).
Given the following iPhoto specs, what minimum Mac machine tech specs do I need?
We have 27,000+ photos, consuming 105 GB disk space.
    We have almost 800 events.
We have 500+ smart albums and approximately the same number of regular albums.  Purpose?  Make photos easier to find on the iPod, when showing others via output to their TV screen.
Do we need the max of:
    - RAM?
    - Video RAM
    - CPU
    - Other?
Can any of the Apple laptops support our needs (with a big enough hard drive assumed)?
    Thanks,
    Mike

They didn't have any quad core iMacs in 2005/06. The just switched them from PPC to Core Duo/Core 2 Duo chips.
All the modern Macs come with 4GB RAM standard and most of them discrete graphics chips. If you were to purchase even the newer iMac base model, it is way ahead of the early Intel Macs. Infact, I am running a new i5 Quad Core iMac. It's the base model with only a 500GB HD. I use professional apps like Final Cut and Logic Studio on a daily basis. I don't use iPhoto anymore, but my Aperture library is about 80GB so it is close to your iPhoto library. My iMac opens everything instantly. I can browse my photo library by albums, faces or all events and it never even slows down.
If you were interested in a notebook, I would recommend the 15" or the 17" Macbook Pro with quad core i7. Since you work with a lot of photos, the base model doesn't give you enough native pixels on the screen and uses dual core CPUs, and only the higher end models have a discrete graphics chip with 1GB or more of dedicated graphics memory.
So what I am saying is any modern iMac, or Macbook Pro 15" or higher should suit you well. Stay away from the Mac Mini or Macbook Air because the CPUs are slower, the new ones rely on HD 3000 integrated graphics, and you will run out of hard drive space faster!
My base model iMac only has a 500GB HD, but all other models have 1TB standard. All the audio and video files I do not store on my internal disk, I always put them on an external RAID array through firewire. But my Aperture photo library is stored locally and is super fast browsing. But I only have about 20,000 photos right now.

  • What mac to get?

I am debating between the 15" and the 17". I record audio and video and stuff. Logic/Final Cut, etc... Do I need the expresscard/34 thing so I can do SATA? Do I use that for an external HD or for the interface? Give me advice. peace.

I kinda like the big screen. I currently use firewire 400 for my audio interface and HD and have never had a problem. I was thinking if I ever wanted to record like 32 tracks at once it might be nice to have SATA.
On BestBuy.com they have a 15" model with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M video card for $1699. It doesn't mention that it has a mini display port. Can this unit output 2500x1600 to drive my samsung 30" display?
    Thanks for the info.

  • What Mac best fits my needs?

Hi folks - I'm looking for some simple advice, and I cant see that anyone's answered these sort of questions for a couple of years now.
I think it's time to retire my iMac (late 2007, first of the brushed aluminium line). It's given me many happy years of service. I'm constantly changing my mind as to what I should get now. Either another iMac (21.5 inch) or perhaps a MacBook Pro (15 inch) - I have no strong preference in terms of mobility or a large screen.
My needs are thus: no heavy video or photo editing or graphic design, though basic stuff may become more common in a few years. What I do usually involves lots of spreadsheets, word docs, and browser tabs open at the same time, with the spreadsheets running reasonably heavy calculations (lots of vlookups etc.).
Whatever I get, it will have a SSD. Some people have told me this alone will make all the difference and worrying about CPUs, GPUs, and maxing out the RAM is pointless. I'm also opting for quad-core, as I often have multiple apps up.
So if my plan is to get the 21.5in iMac with the 2.7GHz quad-core i5, Iris Pro Graphics, 8GB memory, and 500GB SSD... will that still be meeting all my needs with good performance in six or seven years? If not, what should I upgrade? I can get the same machine with more memory, but can't upgrade the CPU without getting a separate GPU as well, in which case I'm happy to consider the basic 15 inch MacBook Pro with the better processor and memory but no separate graphics card.
    Thanks!

core i5 may be too limited for future use expectations. The quad core retina Macbook pro you can use as is and in the event your want more screen size then use the HDMI connection or an Apple 27 inch thunderbolt display.
