What Macbook to buy?

Hey,
I am currently looking to buy a Macbook Pro with the intent of using it for mostly the usual stuff, i.e. browsing, music, wordprocessing etc. Apart from that, I will also be using it for gaming, but not really any "hardcore" games (I've got my PS4 for that), so mostly strategy games like the total war franchise.
My question is: would the MacBook 13 inch with the dual-core 2.6 GHz i5 processor and 8GB of memory suffice, or should I go for the (more expensive) 15 inch with the quad-core 2.0 GHz i7 processor?
I'm kinda lost, so any advice would be much appreciated :-) !

If you wanna buy it for only soft games and music I would like to recommend you to buy the 13 inch cause it is more easier for gamers and for the house hold purpose. Well thinking about 15 inch, it has a lot big screen and uncomfotable.

  • What Macbook to buy - i5 or i7, refurb or not, and how important is graphics?

Am wanting to upgrade my 4yo Macbook but totally unsure what to get!! My one has 2gb RAM and 320HD and 2Ghz and does lag at times. HD often hits 300GB used but I do need to clear up some pics. Main uses (aside from mail and web) is Lightroom and iMovie. Dont use Adobe PS yet but may well do in future.
I am confused by chips - something like a 2.9 dual core i5 compared to a 2.4 quad core i7... what is the difference? Is a slower quad core better than a faster dual?
Budget wise I am flexible, ideally want to keep cost around £1500 but if I have to spend more I will. So, is the better graphics in the 15" that much better and useful for what I do?
I am torn between retina and non retina. Screen is nice but the big thing for me is the size and weight of the retina (plus in the store, the screen 'wobbled' more on non retina). Would I be better off with say a 750mb or even a 1gb HD or going for a smaller SSD and using Time Capsule as a storage place for stuff like music or film footage?
Tempted by a refurb, some just have a price, others have a saving added, does that mean anything? Also, is it likely to be marked or have scratches? Are they ex store machines?
I am also considering holding off until a new one is launched as I dont NEED one yet (but will at some point this year). Maybe the newer one will have the ac wifi, better battery life, cheaper ssd and the option of 16gb on a 13"?
    At the moment I think the ones i favour are the non retina 13" 2.9 i7 with 6gb RAM and 750 HD for £1249, retina 13" with 2.5 i5 with 256/512 SSD at £1409 or £1569, retina 13" with 2.6 i5 with 512 SSD at £1689 or possibly the 15" 2.4 i7 quad for £1799.
So, any ideas and tips to the above?

Buy a computer when you really need it. Technology advances so fast.
When you are ready to buy one, consider options available at that time and buy the latest
that is the best for you.
    Best.

  • What macbook should I buy for video editing?

I'm an indie filmmaker and I need to have a macbook that I can take with me, so I can do editing. I never owned one before. (I have an iMac at home) I would like to keep it around $1800 (with tax&Shipping). I've seen some refurbished 2011 models here on Apple way under that amount.
I need one that will able to handle Adobe CS5.5 and Final Cut without any problems. I've been told 512MB was more  than enough to run FCP. Should I just go with the 1gb video ram model instead? I just don't want a macbook pro that has issues with playback and rendering issues. I found a 17" online for $1900 with 1GB Video Card. Is that considered a good deal?
In the future should I consider putting in a SSD drive in the to help speed things up?
    Thanks in advance.

It doesnt matter really what macbook u buy.. If u buy the latest ones they have usually i5 and i7 processors which are quite powerful for Logic 9. The important bit is to have a good amount of ram 4-6 GB is quite good
Also if you make a practise to run just Logic while ur working on it and close other applications it should be flying.. Althought i am pretty bad at following this habit..  I have a macbook pro with the following..
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Works MAGIC for me

You can sync photos and videos to your iPad via your computer's iTunes.
To sync photos, connect and select your iPad on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac), and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
If the videos are films that you want to go into the Videos app then you first need to add them to your computer's iTunes library via File > Add To Library, and you can then use the Films/Movies tab to select and sync them
Syncing media : iTunes: Syncing media content to iPod
What format are the videos in that you want to download, and have you got an app on your iPad that supports that format ?

  • Macbook Reinstall.  No Disk.  What disk to buy?

    Hi,
Just bought a Macbook from my boss at work. He told me he could not find the disks for the laptop. I would really like to buy some Install disks for os x. I currently have 10.6.5 running. What I would like to know is what disks to buy. I see the apple store sells some disks but when I read about them it just says things about upgrading. I want to do a fresh install. I also have hardrive issues when I go to partition. I was told the install disks would fix this. Can someone point me in the right direction as to what disks I need to buy? A link would be cool. Thank you in advance.

You should be able to use the $29 retail Snow Leopard (10.6) disk from the Apple Store or from Best Buy. However, that will include just the system, while the disks that shipped with the machine will also contain bundled apps, like iLife, and an appropriate [Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509] boot system for your machine. You can contact Apple to replace those disks for a small fee ($10? not entirely sure).

  • What should I buy with a Macbook Air?

I am looking at buying a 11in Macbook Air and I would like to know what should I buy with it?
    What accesories do you reccomend?
And for time capsule what size hard drive do you reccomend?

I am pretty sure you meant Time Machine instead of Time Capsule. For external HD's almost any external HD would be adequate. The only brand I'm not a big fan of are WD's external drives although some posters have a lot of luck with them. Personally I like:
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
for their build quality and features. Personally I use 4 of the LaCie's but any of the others would be welcome on my desk too. If you are interested I noticed Lacie had teh 1TB available today as a refurbished model for less than $100, a great buy! The URL is:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/clearance/products/?id=10007
When I checked earlier they had 45, as of this writing they have 14 so they're selling quickly.

  • HELP! I need some help from true Mac fans! What should I buy???

So, I'm moving to Japan, which has a couple of implications (other than the fact that my wife's parents and my parents are looking for any legal recourse to stop us from taking their only grandchild out of the country). More importantly however, I have had to sell my B&O TV and music system (different signals from the UK where we now live). I also decided to sell our stereo (or rather my wife decided it was too bulky so as long as it was not in the living room or bedroom I could keep it...). Finally, I need a new laptop for personal use. I have some friends that are absolute mac fans, who have convinced me to go over to the other side (i.e. yours).
The opportunity I now have is to create a complete system as I need a laptop, something to play my music, a TV, etc. Given I am starting from a clean sheet I was hoping somebody out there could help me 'design' a complete set-up. My wife and I are keen photographers (both photography and video), we like listening to music, and watching movies (we definitely need a region-free DVD player), so what should we buy?
Any input would be hugely appreciated.

OSX also supports IME right out of the box.
    日本語 ー わかりません
It sets up pretty well, too; I like it more than Mircrosoft's implementation (language bar).
Only thing to keep in mind is where you buy the MacBook; if you get it in Japan you'll get a Japanese keyboard, which displays most of the kana alongside the keys. You also get the conversion and switch keys on the keyboard itself, which is great.
The MacBook Power Unit is multi-voltage, so no matter where you pick it up the worst you need is a plug adapter; although getting one from apple would be best. Just don't think you need to buy a new power unit, only the plug and cable.

  • What Macbook do i need? And whats frontside bus?

I am buying a new macbook and I need it to run great and fast for evcerything i do. Here is my average use. What macbook and how much ram, gbs, ghz etc. do i need? Also, what is frontside bus and how much of that do i need?
Here is my average use: (all, at once)
    Using MAC OS X:
    -Chatting on MSN Messenger
-Reading/Sending emails. (Using Mail or gmail.com)
-Heavy internet use (5-10 windows open at once, some using macromedia lash)
    -Using iPhoto to edit photos
-Occasionally running iDVD in the background and switching to it every so often.
Average use using boot camp (Windows XP Pro):
-Running TheSims2 Pets (need it to run fast)
    OR:
-Streaming office spreadsheets or power point presentions
    -On MSN Messenger with Webcam
    -Heavy internet use
    -Editing photos with Piccas (google)
    -Reading emails at gmail.com
What MacBook do I need: ____
How much RAM do I need: ____
    Frontside bus: ____
How Much GHz do I need: ____
How Many GBs do I need: ____
What graphics card do i need: ___
    Other: ______

    Here's what I'd suggest:
    Macbook Pro 15.4"
    2.0ghz
1gig of RAM (2 gigs is great, but 1 would do)
80GB or 100GB Hard Drive (depending on how much space you plan to use for Windows XP)
The 2.0ghz comes with the ATI X1600 mobile 128mb card. This will be fine for running the sims.
Basically you could use a standard macbook with the same specs. The only concern I would have is running the Sims 2. The Macbook's integrated video controller(Intel GMA950) may not do so hot while playing the Sims. I'm not sure how well the gma950 does with 3d games.
    Macbook 13"
    2.0ghz
    1gb RAM (again i recommend 2)
    80-100GB HD
    Hope this helps.
    Brian
edit: The front side bus is the bus (channel) that carries electronic signals from the CPU to all other hardware devices (RAM, Video card, HDD, etc) All macbook models (13" and pro models) have a 667mhz Frontside Bus.

  • Need help choosing what computer to buy!

So after months of debate, Ive decided to switch to mac after being a pc user for over 20 years. Now my dilemma is choosing what computer to buy and when. I have definitely decided to wait until Snow Leopard comes out and when I can get the student deals. However, choosing the right computer has been the issue. I hear that they are phasing out the white macbook so why would I purchase a new one? As well, I have been reading about many issues with buying a first generation unibody model. So where does that leave me? Do I wait for apple to fix the quirks with the new aluminum macbook or by the old white macbook knowing that they might not exist in the next couple years? I would like to get this computer by August but am willing to wait knowing I made the right decision. Thanks.

If you don't need a new computer until August then wait. I don't care what brand you buy, or what model within that brand, some will inevitably have problems. These forums are like a hospital, this is where you come when you have a problem. Out of the hundreds of thousands macs sold every year proportionally very few have problems. Your chances of getting a quirky one are quite slim. But if you are going to wait for a model where 100 percent of them that come off the assembly line will never have a problem you are going to be waiting a very long time.

  • What do i buy to hook up my ibook....

what do i buy to hook up my ibook g4 into my tv using the A/V plug??
do i hook up the --(Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter) to my ibook then hook up the --(Apple AV Cable for iBook) to the adapter??....
    thanks for the help...

You need to use the Apple Video Adapter M9109G/A to get a video signal.
Then you just need a male-to-male video patch cable to connect the adapter to your TV.

You need a newer 2011 or later iMac to use Airplay.
    Sorry.
For older Mac, look at an app called AirParrot

After many days of frustration, I try a stupid thing.... Put the SD card in the Lock Position and... Voilá!
The way I find to access the content is put the SD card in the Lock position..

  • What Macbook Pro to get for video editing?

For software like adobe after effects cs5, what macbook would be the best, I have pretty limited money so is the base model ok? if not whitch one works well?
    Thanks!

The top end non-retina, 15" anti-glare is the best. SSD preferred, has a Superdrive. RAM and hard drive upgradable later by the user.
The retina has a glossy screen which is hard on the eyes and using in various places, it's battery life is terrible and the images are not correct as it's blowing things up to mach the higher pixel rate. No Superdrive. You can't open the machine up, you can't clean the fans of dust you can't upgrade it later, you will have to max it out at purchase for a small fortune and go way over budget. Plus there really isn't too much difference in the quality of the screen with regular MBP's anyway, just eats battery life to drive that huge pixel screen. You'll be replacing it a lot sooner than the standard 15"
Don't waste your money on the 13", it lacks a dedicated graphics, the CPU does it thus it's HOT. Won't 3D game well if your also into play.
Top end 15" antiglare is perfect.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X0wo6dIsMU
Actually the MacPro is the perfect choice of power and performance for video editing, with it's substancial cooling. But you want a laptop , just know things will take longr and the machien will be hotter as a result and wear out sooner if your doing 3D gaming or video often.
