What makes screen magnify when I accidentally lay it down to quickly?

My iPhone 5 will magnify the screen contents when I accidentally tap it or lay it down too quickly and it gets a jolt. It is so large that I can't locate the slide even to turn it off and reboot. It requires a two-handed reset. Why does it happen and how do I fix it without having to reboot?

Based on your description of the issue, you may be experiencing inadvertent activation of the Accessability Zoom feature. You may find the following article useful, and may want to try turning off the Zoom feature for the time being to test if the issue reoccurs:

Prior to sale, I am wiping the hard drive clean using original 10.5.2 discs on a 2008 era MacBook Pro. I haven't been thru this process previously. Setting up the erase from the discs was smooth. Being paranoid, I chose a 7-pass erase - I knew it would be "long" but not how long. When the erase process started, a window included the information of it taking up to 7 hours. The screen is now dark and acts like the computer is in sleep mode, but does not awaken with any keystroke. Should I be able to follow the (long) process on a window? I don't want to wait for hours and not be able to identify the end point. Also, I expected that I would hear some hard drive activity during the process, and it seems like all I hear is the fan. Can anyone who has done this share what to expect?

I presume these are all external, non-NAS drives? Have you tried disk utility repair disk and repair permissions?

I don't know if it's hard on the screen to keep it up and running when I have the ipad connected to the television watching a movie on netflix, for example, but it sure seems like a waste of it's life. No, the video app needs to have that feature built in. For example, the Apple video app does black out the display, but when I use VLC or Netflix they do not.

Try recalibrating the battery meter... fully discharge (until it shuts off) and then fully recharge (don't unplug until 100%) to recalibrate the battery meter. You may need to do this a few times.

HT1338 My desktop screen changes when I wake it up

Did you check the sleep button on top of the phone? Usually pressing the home and the sleep button will trigger a reboot.
Did you try to set it up as new device without using the latest backup, in case it contains corrupt files?

Yes, or you can simply restart. As you don't have the CDs, this isn't on the plate any more.
The internal backup battery is not expensive and, in most iMacs is user-replacable. If yours has a tray-loading optical drive like this one:
it takes a major teardown to replace the internal battery. If this is the case, you'd be better off to leave the computer plugged in all the time; that eliminates the main reason for having a working battery.
If it has a slot-loading optical drive like this one:
things are much easier. The battery is visible through the RAM access door on the bottom of the computer case. The manual:

has sketches of how to access the RAM and therefore the backup battery. Unfortunately, the pdf on the manual goes up sideways on-screen and the RAM instructions are pretty deep into the manual. It's probably easier to scroll (for a while) to the section on adding RAM and print the applicable pages.
When you work on the battery, some sort of non-conductive pliers or large tweezer or forceps help unless you have tiny fingers. Make sure to note the polarity of the old battery and install the new one in the same orientation.
The battery itself is readily available. If price is no oblect, you can get it for a small rasom from Radio Shack Store ("Tandy" outside the US) as part number 23-026.
Online, they are dirt-cheap even after adding shipping. I buy backup batteries form this outfit:

anything that's not music, photos, apps, etc. anything that is not whatever is shown next to the other on the bottom of your screen. for example, if you look on your phone at settings, general, usage and click on any of the apps it will show you how much the actual app takes up and also how much documents and data it has; that documents and data portion will be counted as other. most phones that are operating normally have around 1gb of other so if you have a lot more than that you probably have a corrupt file or something. in that case search "removing other from iphone" will help you, but usually restoring is what will fix it.

Have you tried giving it a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple let go and let it reboot and see if htat helps.

Go to Settings>Notifications and turn alerts/sounds on for the app(s) in question. Not all apps have all options.

It means that you jailbroke your iPhone with redsn0w. There are several known methods to fixing this issue:
1. Plug it into your computer and restore
2. Plug it into your computer, then hold the power button for about 6 seconds
3. Hold the power button and the home button to restart it. As soon as it turns on, plug it into your computer and wait
4. Time. Sometimes it fixes itself over time.
I would suggest refraining from jailbreaking your device next time. I know it tempting to do so, but if you want to root your phone or play with emulators, I would suggest an android device. Btw, iOS 7 looks promising for the Apple community. Keep your ears peeled this week during WWDC.
