What Maxtor drive for G5??

I've just purchased 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB Hard drives that have caused problems since I installed them 4 days ago. Reading these forums it sounds like there are major compatibility issues with G5 PowerMacs. I've attached these to a Sonnet Tempo X 4+4 sata controller. My Mac freezes ramdomly and sometimes will not boot.
Does disabling the SSC thing cure this? I've limited the drives to sata 1 using the jumper on the drives.
I can exchange these for Maxtor DiamondMax 10 drives, but am hesitant in case incompatibility issues arise.
Does any body have any issues with the Maxtors in a G5 2.0 PCI? What model would you recommend?
Thanks
Andrew

I've had a thought.
I'm running these 2 new Seagate Sata II HD's and an older Western Digital Sata I HD off the same Sonnet Tempo X 4+4 Sata controller (3 different ports). I'm not clear on whether SSC is factory disabled or not on these new HD's, but I have them limited to 1.5gb/s. The sonnet supports sata II and SSC aparently.
Would this cause some kind of conflict having 2 flavours of Sata HD attached? Or should the Sonnet accept different flavours of Hard Drive?

  • What Size Drive for Media Cache?

    Hi there,
I'm about to edit a large project (5TB of 4K RED footage and counting) on a laptop and am intending to use the setup below for disks. Ideally I would have gone for a "4 disk" setup, but I've maxed out my eSATA connections and would have to use USB for anything else. If coincidentally you can see any problems with this configuration please let me know!
    Disk Setup
    C Drive 750GB (OS, Programs)
3x 2TB Drives in eSATA docking stations (Media, Projects)
Second internal hard disk (Previews, Media Cache, Exports)
I'm intending to install a second hard drive in my laptop to use for the  Media Cache. What size/speed drive should be used for this purpose?
    Thanks!

Well I needed a field laptop and couldn't afford a new desktop on top of that. Haven't had any problems at all so far - perhaps I'm overlooking something?
Perhaps only that the predominant holy grail on this forum is achieving a high PPBM score, not necessarily edit 4K.
I've worked with 2K and 4K files on very slow machines, and I am not an editor - a systems integrator.  It's being done.
Personally, I wouldn't dedicate a disk or a volume to media cache and DB - I believe that money is better spent on the main media volume's speed and capacity.  People who have done it on modern (not old) systems haven't reported much of a performance boost.  But if you find otherwise, I'd love to hear about it.
In your case, since you don't seem to plan to have a relatively fast main media volume (e.g. an eSATA RAID0), a separate drive for media caching and database may have a performance benefit.  The size of it depends on the size of your projects, how complex your project and timelines are, how much rendering they require.  Usually even a small disk (under 100GB) will do just fine for the purpose; the current "sweet spot" is around 256GB SSD and 500-750GB 7200rpm mechanical drive.

  • What hard drives for a 2002 quicksilver

Need new hard drive for power mac G4 Quick Silver 2002 model
What type should i get and what is maximum size i could get for this old crock
    thank you

    Hi-
Any IDE/PATA 3.5" drive will work.
There is no capacity limitation with the 2002 machine, so the 500 GB drives are no problem.
The WD5000AAKB is a very good drive to consider.

  • Confused..what external drive for MB

Hi all, new MB owner here. I was in a trip to US a couple of weeks ago and bought myself a MB from Amazon. In my last day in the US, Apple announces the new models and that's a bit of a bummer since there is no time to send back and upgrade but still very happy with my purchase.
Anyway, I need to get an external drive mainly to store photos and I want it to be fast enough to work on these photos with iPhoto, Photoshop CS3, RAW conversion etc.
I also need to be able to read from this drive from both my MB and my WinXP PC.
So, first of all will I be able to edit photos from an external drive(will the HD be fast enough) and at the same time be able to read it both from MacOSX and WinXP?
Then I have read that there are 3 options available: Firewire 400, eSata and USB2. I guess that USB2 is the slowest so can I actually use any of the remaining 2 options and what would you suggest? How can I connect an eSATA drive to the MB?
    Thanks!!!

USB 2.0 is actually faster than firewire 400
Not on a practical level - even with no other devices on the same USB node. If you've got active regular speed devices on the same node (like a hub) it'll even slow it down further. Add low-speed devices on the same node (like a USB mouse) and a good chunk of your bandwidth is gone. USB wasn't originally designed for high-speed transfers, but the high-speed standard was added on later.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire#ComparisontoUSB
Although high-speed USB 2.0 runs at a higher signaling rate (480 Mbit/s) than FireWire 400, typical USB PC-hosts rarely exceed sustained transfers of 35 MB/s (280 Mb/s), with 30 MB/s (240 Mb/s) being more typical (the theoretical limit for a USB 2 high-speed bulk transfer is 53.125 MB/s). This is likely due to USB's reliance on the host-processor to manage low-level USB protocol, whereas FireWire automates the same tasks in the interface hardware.
USB is a host-driven interface. Every packet has to be requested by the host controller, and this usually means devoting CPU resources.
FireWire typically has sustained transfer rates of 40+ MB/sec.

  • What IDE driver for a SATA HD for a KT4V ?

I have a new KT4V board with a WD 120 SATA hard drive.  I need to install Win2K server on it.  I can not discover what drivers to use so that Win2K will recognized the HD.
From what I can tell it uses the VT8235 chipset, but I can't locate anything for it.
    All help appreciated.

Is the drive jumper set correctly, WD uses a setting for "stand alone" that most others do not use. If you have it set as master, and it is the only drive on that channel, it will not be reconised. Hope that helps.

  • What external drive for Time Machine?

    Hi all,
I just upgraded to Leopard and want to set up TM, so I have been looking at external drives. I have done some research, read the forums, and I am more confused than before! I think I want a desk model with FW connection. I keep reading how unreliable the various brands can be (WD My Book 1T, Free Agent, Simpletech, etc.), so I am not sure how to proceed.
I take lots of photos which I do not want to lose.
    Thanks for your help!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You're right about Firewire. Many posters here think it's much more reliable than USB.
If you have a F/W 800 port, look for a drive that can use it. Theoretically, it's twice as fast as F/W 400. USB will work, too, and is usually about as fast as F/W 400, but if you go that route, be sure to get a drive with it's own power supply, as taking power from your Mac via USB can be problematic (and don't use a USB connector on your keyboard for this).
Most of the major brands seem to be generally good and reliable, but even the best have some problems. I got a Seagate Free Agent Pro 500gb a few months ago, with F/W 400 and USB, and have had no trouble with it. The main reason I bought it, rather than any of the others, was the 5-year warranty. Most of the others only have 1 year.

  • Hard drives for logic, what to look for?

Hi peeps, I'm looking at getting a new internal hard drive for my Mac Pro exclusively for my Logic 9 projects
obviously speed will be a factor in how many audio tracks I can use etc, but what other features are beneficial to logic? cache size etc
more importantly are there any drives out there that just don't play nice with logic, which are the ones to avoid at all costs?,
any positive recommendations of specific drives that are known to work well with DAWs?
    any advice would be great
    thanks, Robert

I've been using a 250GB Maxtor sense 2004. No problems with it. Gonna get a 1TB soon. Probably will be another Maxtor. Your milage may vary

  • What is the Highest Capacity SATA Drive for a REV A G5

What is the Highest Capacity SATA Drive for a REV A G5 (SP 1.8 with 8 RAM slots), it came with a 160, I know 250s work... will anything higher?
I am looking at this if nothing else, it seems to be a nice 250,

but I am curious if I could go higher
    Thanks

    (Rep points given)

Hitachi 400GB was trouble even on SeriTek controllers. Like the early 7K250, it was not a native SATA drive. Early SATA drives were often using Marvel or some other bridge on PATA drives. The T7K250 and 7K500, or Maxtor are fine. WD has some new drives, one model is optimized for RAID-only firmware.
Whatever happened to just plug in and go, anyway?

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
When the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the Mac OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac didn’t ship with Lion, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
Don't install the Thunderbolt update -- it's defective.

  • My 320GB external drive for Time Machine now only has enough capacity to keep a backup of one day. All my other backups are gone.  What can I do to fix this situation?

I've been using a 320GB external drive for time machine for the last several years.  The backups always worked fine and when necessary I was able to look at & restore older data from the time capsule.  Recently, I keep getting the message that a backup cannot be completed and an older backup will be deleted. Usually this wasn't an issue because I still had several months of information on disk.  Now a one-time backup takes up 315GB and therefore I only have a backup of the previous day.  I don't understand this because I thought that the backup only saves information that has changed and doesn't copy everything everytime.  What do I need to do to get my backups to a reasonable size so that I can keep at least 1 month data stored on it.?  Please don't tell me I need a larger drive ... that would be too easy.

Get a larger drive for your TM backups.
The recommended size is 3 times what you are backup. So if 315 GB is a backup then you need a 1 TB drive.

--Tom asked "what format are you capturing?"
    1. What camera (that the Church owns?) are you using now? Does it record to a small Memory card or to tape? -- What make & model is it? HD or SD?
    2. If the camera is storing to a media card, you can (a) copy the contents of the card to a thumb drive attached to any laptop at the church, take it home and import into Final Cut X there or (b) borrow the media card(s) and take it/them home.
    3. What laptop computer do you and/or the Church presently own? What is the operating system version? How much memory, size/type of internal Storage? Any external hard drive storage? You mentioned that you own a Mac Pro at home. What model? (Apple Menu/About this Mac/System Information) What are its specifications?
Almost any computer would be able to simply copy files using the finder - without using Final Cut Pro X for capture at the Church.
One can purchase 128 GB., USB 2/3 thumb drives for about $60 and up.
If your Church's camera is a Tape based Camera, then you could just take the tapes home. No? "Capture" at home. Yes?
You are currently capturing to an esata drive? which drive? which model Macbook Pro do you own?
Finally, is your Church going to be purchasing whatever new equipment that you may need?

I HAD TO BUY A NEW HARD DRIVE FOR MY LAPTOP. I AM TRYING TO RE-INSTALL MY ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12 BUT IT KEEPS SAYING MY SERIAL NUMBER IS INVALID. WHAT DO I DO?

Just user to user....based on past and current history, Adobe Tech Support is not going to help you with a technical issue which is preventing you from using your purchased serial number for Photoshop Elements. Version 12 is not the current version. And, the Adobe Tech Support is limited even for the current version which is 13. If this matter involves a purchased activated serial number trapped on a crashed computer while you are trying to install on a 3rd computer, then probably Adobe Chat Activation can be of assistance. If that is the case and you want to explore that possibility, then click on the following link
    Contact Customer Care
    Photoshop Elements
    Adobe ID, Signing In
Adobe ID, Sign In, Account Help
    Chat Panel
If the above link does not hold its set, then you will need to navigate to the Chat Panel using the above titles as guides.
Are you getting one of those "too many computers with your serial number" messages? Then the above should apply to your situation.
    Before the above consider....
    a. For Photoshop Elements technical issues please post your question in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum. Somehow your
question got posted in the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum.
    b. Have you verified your Photoshop Elements serial number at the Adobe web site (http://www.adobe.com) - after signing in with your
Adobe ID and Password, type My Products in the Search field and follow the path to your product in My Products. Click on Adobe
Photoshop Elements 12 in your list to reveal the serial number.
    c. Do the install with antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.

  • What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage

What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage?

Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.
