What may be a silly question ...

I've looked and don't see an answer anyplace, so here goes ...
I have my internal hard drive backing up (now with Time Machine) onto a partition on an external hard drive. Fine.
But I have another external hard drive which contains my iTunes library which until now had been backed up with SuperDuper onto a second partition on the backup hard drive. My question: Can I get Time Machine to backup the external hard drive onto the second partition as well?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

I agree with Shawn that it will require a large partition that would hold both. TM would track that the files are restored to the two separate partitions. At least, that is my understanding.
Some people have suggested that you can copy a TM drive to another drive. I would think that that would work, but have not tried it. It would be easy to check. Just do the copy and then check to see if the second drive contains the same amount of allocated data as the first. Of course, you would have to add the name of the second drive into TM's list of backup drives once the copy completes (if it works).

You will need to do it using a third-party utility such as Phone to PC. Also, see:

I am not a knowledgeable user - have what may be a stupid question! I just purchased a TV show series on iTunes and downloaded all episodes for the season. But I believe i want them on my iCloud instead of my laptop. How do I transfer them to the Cloud or duplicate on the iCloud?

You can't transfer any purchase to the cloud yourself, whether a TV programme/series will show in the cloud for redownloading in the future depends upon what country that you are in (TV programmes can't be redownloaded in all countries), whether you move countries (you can't redownload purchases made in another country) and if the rights-holder keeps them in the store (they occasionally remove their items).
As you bought it on your laptop then you could turn Settings > iTunes & App Store > Videos (under 'show all') 'on' on your iPad and it might show in the Videos app on it with a cloud icon against it for streaming/redownloading (it might also show in the Purchased tab in the iTunes Store app for refownloading whether or not you turn that 'on') - but that depends upon your country and only whilst it remains in your country's store. Similarly if you delete it from your laptop and tick the 'show iTunes in the cloud purchases' tick box on the Store tab in Edit > Preferences it might show in the TV Shows part of your library for redownloading (and whether or not you tick that it might show in the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage for redownloading).
But you should be taking a backup copy of it, and anything else that you download from the stores, there is no guarantee that you will be able to redownload any item.

This may seem a silly question, but how can I create a new mailbox on my iPad?

A new mailbox/folder - you can't, not yet. If you're using an IMAP mail account, you can create a mailbox on the server (either through webmail or desktop mail) and it'll appear on the iPad.
We've been told the upcoming iOS5 will allow you to do so (I assume, provided you have IMAP).

• Need advice on what may be a BASIC question....?

Hi people....
I wonder if anyone could advise me?
I'm a working producer/programmer/fixer based in the UK but doing a lot of work in continental Europe, so my main computer is a PowerBook G4 running Logic. I need more power from my system, but I need it to be portable. So what do I go for?
A quad G5 would be like going from a beaten-up Ford to a Ferrari. But VERY inconvenient to carry on a Eurostar train along with a bag of interfaces + cables and a suitcase!
Here's my idea.....
I get a quad G5 and get it all running nice and happy here in London
I use something like Silverlining to create a bootable clone of the G5 on a portable drive
I take that abroad and use a rented computer, and boot up from this clone drive
Would this work?
Cheers
Matthew Vaughan

If yuo have stuff on iLok, you should be fine, but if
your 3rd party plugs are disk-authorized, they
may not work.
Thanks.....
....but if my plugs are disk-authorised, and I'm booting from a portable hard drive, then that would be the system drive. So the system should look at this drive to find the authorisations.....yes?
Like I said, the problem is, I work a lot in London, and in Paris, sometimes in other places too. I might be able to afford one G5, but it's obviously not portable enough to carry between jobs. Until I thought of this I thought I'd have to buy 2 systems and leave one in Paris....
....not actually BEING Bill Gates, I quickly rejected this solution on terms of cost....!
Cheers

• This may be a silly question, but I need help!

I have DSL internet at work, and much slower internet at home. I have been buying and download music from iTunes at home, but it takes so long to download. I'd like to do it at work if possible. If I do this, will I still be able to pull up the music at my home? Or, will I have two separate libraries?
Let me know what to do and if it's possible!
Thanks!

Tracks purchased from the iTunes Music Store will only be downloadable to one computer, so you'll have to copy them from your work system and take them home and copy them onto your computer there. This should help:
iTunes 4: How to copy music between authorized computers
And if you happen to also own an iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you've copied the tracks to your home computer, you'll just need to authorize it (just play any of the tracks and it should ask for your iTMS account ID and password) and you should be in business.

• 2 silly questions what is boot camp and do I need it? & How to transfer PC

Okay, I've just ordered my first mac it's a 17" 1.83 refurb iMac, I've noticed a lot of stuff about boot camp, what is it? Does it allow me to transfer my old pc files to my Imac? The only files I will be transfering are pictures and music files can anyone tell me how easy or hard this will be, Thanks again

There are no silly questions.
Boot Camp (which is still a beta until Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' comes out) allows you to boot your Intel-based Mac in either Windows XP or Mac OS X. It will make an extra partition on your internal hard drive on which you can install WinXP SP2.
To transfer you PC files onto your Mac you will not need Boot Camp. There are several ways to do it, but perhaps the easiest is to burn you files on a CD-R or DVD-R and insert the disc into your Mac.
For your music files: start iTunes and import all music files from your CD/DVD (File menu > Import).
For your pics: start iPhoto and import all your pictures from the CD/DVD (File menu > Import in Library). iPhoto is really the best way to keep track of all your current and future pics and share them with anyone.
Good luck and welcome to the Mac world!

• This may seem like a silly question but I need it answered plz

This may seem like a silly question but I am pretty new to
dreamweaver but I am learning it. The question I have is this. When
your typing a paragraph and hit enter to make the next line of text
it goes down 2 spaces. Sometimes I don't want those two spaces. I
want no space between the two sentences. How do you put one
sentence below another with no spaces? Thanks in advance. I seems

thing lol. Thanks for the help in advance.

• Silly Question- PREVIEW - Leopard Rotating Pics

Silly question, but a little "bothersome" on this end.
Just upgraded to 10.5.4. In my previous OSX PREVIEW of pictures, if the pictures were rotated (from the camera), they showed up that way in PREVIEW and I had to manually rotate them. Now, Preview seems to show them in the proper position, but then when I send to family, they may be rotated in the wrong position. Some of my contacts aren't very computer savvy and don't understand how to rotate them on their own.
Isn't there somewhere in PREVIEW that I can turn off the automatic rotate so I can rotate them on my own.
I hope this is clear---it's a silly question, but solving it will make my life a little simpler!
Thanks!
job

The rotated picture business is bit confusing, so bear with me a minute.
When you shoot in portrait view your camera records everything the same as it does in landscape view, but adds a little digital note saying, in effect, "this picture is supposed to display in portrait." Some things can read the note, and some things can't. Both Finder and Preview can read the note and display the picture appropriately, Safari can't. If you want to see how those on other machines might see the picture, just drag it into an open Safari window.
Now--what to do. Because of the complaints of graphic pros the Mac OS no longer automatically applies the rotation to the actual pixels....you have to do it yourself. I usually do so in Photoshop, but if you use iPhoto you can EXPORT the photo, and then the rotation will be saved and the pixels altered.
If you want to use Preview try this:
1. Open the photo and resave immediately, in the "Save as..." dialog box you'll see a line with a check box under the format information, that says "Use Exif Orientation Tag"--uncheck the box and save.
2. Reopen the photo--this time it will display the actual state of the pixels, so it will be sideways
3. Rotate so it is in portrait view
4. Save again
If you drop the photo in Safari it should now appear "correctly" and will display anywhere and everywhere in the correct orientation.

• Simple/silly question: how do I set/change default font/color for outgoing mail messages?

Simple/silly question: how do I set/change default font/color for outgoing mail messages?

Just a suggestion..........
Download Thunderbird. Easier to use when it comes to what you want to do w/your emails.

• Silly Question I know but I'm a Newbie!

Besides Apple's own mail can the iPhone run any other email software e.g. thunderbird, etc.?
Mark

I'm worried that when I collect emails on my iPhone she wont be able to collect those (same) emails via her powerbook (as I will already have collected them). My thought was; if I could use say Thunderbird on my iPhone and collect mail she would be able to collect the same mail via Apple's mail on her powerbook.
That's not how collecting mail works, really. The email client doesn't matter *at all*--it depends on whether the account is POP or IMAP and what settings are in use.
I have a POP account that is set up to download messages and then leave them on the server (this requires setting the POP settings in both Mail desktop and Mail iPhone that way). So all my messages get downloaded both in Mail and on my phone as new, unread, messages.
A POP account set to delete from server after downloading would cause the problem you cite. An IMAP account would download the messages everywhere, but would mark the ones you had already read as Read when your wife downloaded them, and if your wife deleted a message that wasn't for her, it would also get deleted for you.
Google POP vs IMAP for more, and see what your email provider offers, and check the settings.
Not such a silly question---it's a bit complicated.

• Maybe a silly question...are unoffical OS (leaks) safe/secure to use?

So maybe this is a silly question....I have been trying to downgrade my OS after my TMobile phone somehow downloaded an ATT update (10.2.1.3014) that wasn't supported by the Tmobile network and caused all sorts of problems with the device.
After extensive work with Blackberry Support, I am told there is no way to "officially" downgrade back to the Tmobile supported version (10.2.1.2228).
This leaves the files or "leaks" (if you want to call them that), that are available in the forums through the autoloaders. Obviously not knowing where those files came from, who posted them, or what, if any modifications have been made, I'm worried about security, malware, privacy, etc.
Are these things safe and secure to use just like an official OS would be? Is there anyway to verify?
Thanks in advance for your help. Sorry if its a silly question.

Hello,
The autoloaders have no malware or viruses... at least I haven`t heard about any of that. I have used Autoloaders before and the only thing I can suggest is to make sure you download the proper files (OS and radio files) for your phone. In any case case, make sure you do a backup.
If you have more questions, ask away.
Good luck

• VirtualBox VM - silly question!

Hi gang - apologies if this is not the correct thread.
Just got my first iMac and we need to use one bit of Windows software, so I installed VirtualBox VM and installed a Windows XP Home build.
Now this might seem a silly question, but does the virtual environment need anti-virus software?
I should know the answer to this - after all I managed to set it up correctly using an ISO disk image of XP Home and added Microsoft Money 95 (yes, 95!) using a combination of ISO images, shared folders with Mac etc - so why don't I know the answer to this simple question!?
Surely my thinking is correct - that a virus couldn't possibly affect a virtual environment, or for that matter, the Mac Host!?
Cheers

With VM, it depends on what you do in it. If you are surfing the web and responding to email in the VM Windows, then you might need Anti-Virus software installed.
However, if you are just using it to get work done on a Windows-only program, the likelihood of you getting any malware is pretty slim. If you are transferring files between it and other windows users, then you have a higher chance of getting some form of malware onto your VM.
Being that your sole purpose is managing your financial information, I would definitely not risk it and install AV on the XP VM.

• Since the update, my browser is reacting much slower. I can no longer click the "+" button to open a new tab. What may I be able to do to remedy these issues?

In addition to what I included in my "question," the refresh button is also not working.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4+ you can use one of these to start in [[Safe mode]]:
* Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
