What might it do in the future?

I am new to Apple Touch and Ipod in general. Like many I love gadgets, the Touch included. I notice my Touch only has one wire connection that seems to allow both updating or synching and charging of the unit. I am wondering what other potential tasks might be possible through this connection. For example could it be used to connect to a card reader for example? I would love to be able to load photos in the field without the need for a PC. Along the same lines, is there any way to delete files such as photos or videos while in the field or is everything dependent upon the Itunes connection with my PC? Could a connection be made through this plugin to connect to a TV or a monitor? Just wondering and kind of fantasizing about it's potential.

I have been looking and waiting in the hopes that a solitaire (Off line) game would appear. I have not been able to find one. Anyone know of any? I am still disappointed that there is so little going on with this device given the usability of other similar devices. No flash on the Internet, my public library cannot even supply me a book that the device can read. No PDF potential offline for large files. I know that I can email a small pdf attachment but what about the many bigger files like manuals. I would love to carry my digital camera manual around with my Touch. It also seems to have very limited editing capability on anything. I have the extra software like GPS etc. but even that is very limited for me because I do not find myself in lots of places that have free Internet access. I am not just complaining here I am hoping someone can advise me that these things do exist and I have not found them yet or maybe they are coming soon. I do like the screen and the Internet access that is there. I do like the size and shape and the browser is pretty good. I wonder is there any kind of file management system on this device? Kind of like Itunes is to that data? or like Explorer on a PC? Just wondering and appreciate any feedback. I do not mean to sound so negative but these are the things that I think Apple could probably do pretty easily to make it an even better device.

  • What's in store for the future? Messaging 7?

Since the majority of the topics discussed in this forum are "please help" threads, I'm hoping to mix it up a bit.
Since Netscape, iPlanet, SIMS, PMDF and the rest of the SJMS lineage have produced a product that is frankly difficult to impliment and lacks features, I've wondered whether we could devise a "wish-list" of sorts and deliver it to the development team responsible, or at least the program manager.
Any chance that any of the readers here are on the dev team and could share a little insight on what we might have to look forward to? A little taste of the upcoming chilipeppers, so to speak? A little bird told me a tidbit about unified calendars and messaging, but hoping theres a lot more backend additions as well.
I think we as users/admins/integrators of this product could shed a lot of insight into the product. I make a decent living implimenting SMJS in different scenarios, but am somewhat embarassed when customers ask me about the bugs and mis-documentation. I'd sure like to be proud of the product I believe in to be the best, but at the moment I'm somewhat disheartened to explain "uh no, sorry, that's a bug". Overall, I like the product, but there needs to be a clean-up of the backend. Right now, it looks like a hodge-podge of too many products.

  • What will compliment HANA in the future...

I'm in a little dilemma. My team was going for training and get on projects for HANA. But it seems that has been postponed for alteast a year. It was disappointing to hear this.
I'm a BI developer, working with basic ETL, Infocubes, DSO, etc. (only 1 year experience, was ABAP developer before)
I do have somewhat of a flexibility to learn something new (I'm still new to BI, so I have that option).
I want to learn something that will compliment HANA when I get involved in it in the future. I know HANA will be replacing many things in BI. There aren't that many options (BusinessObjects, BWA, BEX, stick with BI (ETL/DSO/InfoCubes/etc.).
What would be the best application/product to learn in BI now that will definitely help/compliment when learning HANA in the future? (which will also improve my skill set and value as a consultant also)

Just a general remark on this, as I believe many customers are thinking about the best ways to adopt HANA.
With BW 7.3 SPS 5 it's possible to run BW natively on a HANA system. This includes changed implementations for different key features of SAP BW (e.g. flat infocubes, in-memory DSO, exception aggregation and de-aggregation pushed to the HANA level etc.).
So it's possible to take the existing BW warehouse and reporting system and run it on HANA.
Step by step the adoption of the new HANA features can then be done.
And, often overlooked, HANA is not a data warehouse. It doesn't integrate data sources across the companies data world.
It's doesn't keep historical data stored in data marts in a cleansed and unified way.
SAP BW does all this - also when it runs on HANA.
So, in my view, it might be a clever strategy to focus on the design of the current data warehouse so that it's easy to move it to HANA.
    ok - just my 2ct

  • The app "GetTube" on my mac book pro do not alow me to download any more. What might you think is the problem?

I have been using "GetTube" for a while and "MacTube" and none will download any
more video on my mac. Anyone know what might be the problem?

It very well may not be the charger. try cleaning out the connection on the notebook and the end of the charger lead. The port on the computer is magnetic and can collect metal/magnetic debris which would cause the charger lead to not connect properly. Especially since you say it doesn't seem as tight as it was when new.
Moving the lead wire will also move the end in the socket making or breaking the connection.
After you try cleaning both ends and it still happens then you will need to take both in.

  • What will skype do in the future to prevent these ...

I downloaded the skype 6 a few days ago. I liked the new layout and enjoyed that it went to the oldest new-message. However, like many people I discovered that the group chat picture doesn't work correctly. In a group where the picture is changed a few times a day and often times part of the discussion, this is very annoying. However there is no fix for this problem, just a vauge reply that windows will fix this in the next update. It feels as though windows is not taking this issue seriously and we may have to wait a month or more before it is fixed.
Why did this problem make it through? I did not see something that said "beta" when I downloaded this- I just uninstalled my old skype and installed the latest versionl.
What measures did windows take to test the new skype? Did you have people beta test it? If so did you give people a checklist of specific things to test out, along with letting them play around? Did you tell them to chat with people who had the old version and the new? How long did you have people beta test this program?
Were you aware of this glitch before it was released? Please answer this honestly. I am aware that programming is difficult, ect. ect. however you have left the glitchy program up as the new skype download, despite this problem.
What will you do going forward to make sure that problems like this don't happen.
If you were aware of this and don't plan to change your practices I would rather change to linux programs. I doubt it will make a big difference to a huge corperation like windows, so please tell me so that I know what to do going forward.
    Sincerely,
Someone who Spends far too Much Time Online.

We are still working to release the fix for this issue. It's only affecting legacy peer-to-peer chats, e.g. ones that were created more than a year ago. If this functionality is super important you can re-create this chat as a modern server based cloud group chat by issuing the "/fork" command in the old group chat. This will create a separate new group chat with a different history starting anew, but it has the same members in it. You need to judge how important the group chat picture feature is for you.
...and if I may be so curious: Can you share a bit how you use the group avatar functionality that you are updating it multiple times a day? Are you discussing movie posters/adverts? Or is your group a design community?

  • I tried opening a pdf file and I set it to use always and firefox which did not work, I was wondering how to undo that and what I should use to open pdf files in the future?

I was attempting to open a document from a frequently used site, I had never been on, on my new mac however. I attempted to open the pdf file and was given the option of which program to use to open it, I mistakenly clicked use always and firefox as the program with which to open pdf files. I do not know how to undo this or what I should do in the future to access the pdf files.

  • What is the future for the enterprise server line from Apple?

    Hi.
I work at a company that is looking at several choices for our services. We've had a Xserve G5 for quite a while and we've been very pleased with it. Although it hasn't been a smooth ride, there haven't been any major issues that have blocked the evaluation.
However, now we are currently comming to an end of our evaluation period of different systems, and now we have to decide. The Xserve/MacOSX have it's advantages, but one issue that currently is a major questionmark is the future for the Apple enterprise line.
I'd really apreciate feedback regarding what you think will be the future for Apple's enterprise line, will it die slowly or get a new boost with the Intel switch, as I've read that Steve has stated time upon time that Apple is not an enterprise based business. Is it worth investing in Xserve/Xraid hardware or should one steer clear of Apple and choose other enterprise platforms such as Sun products based on Solaris for example.
    Thx,
    /Mysteron

Unfortunately, speculation pertaining Apple's future directions and unannounced products are forbidden here, as is discussion of their policies and procedures.
Also, it's hard to really give you a solid answer without knowing more about your particular situation.

  • The future of Linux looks thin - opinions?

Matt Asay writes in TechRepublic that instead of a fat, multi-purpose distribution, Linux might evolve into a variety of thin, specialized distributions like CoreOS. What do you think?
The future of Linux looks very, very thin - TechRepublic
    Rick

There is an impressive map at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg, which shows all the Linux distributions and their offspring. I guess all these distributions had some idea where things should or would be heading. 90 % of these distributions I have never even heard off. If different distributions mean multipurpose, than Linux is the clear winner.
In terms of providing a universal software solution, multipurpose plays a role in the end user market. Every vendor who sees their share in the desktop market is competing with smartphones and tablet computers, trying to get a piece of the cake. Multipurpose, as far as I'm aware, is historically a Microsoft philosophy. Other vendors, like Apple for instance, rather thought of creating special systems depending on devices. All these vendors will probably have to meet somewhere in the middle.
The way I see it, Linux enterprise and server installations, and the same goes for all commercial Unix systems, are always optimized installations for a particular hardware, service and purpose. I think server installations are going to be more and more service optimized and multipurpose is going to be replaced by virtualization.

  • The future of J2ME?

Hi, I read at the following address:
    http://www.croftsoft.com/library/books/javagame/
that the author foresee that J2ME will become obsolete in a couple of years being replaced by regular J2SE/J2EE applications. I'm studying for the SCMAD and this article worried me a bit. Obviouvsly I wouldn't like studying something which is becoming obsolete.
What's your vision about the future of J2ME?
    Regards,
    Marco

They are all right. Any technology is bound to become obsolete sooner or later. But at this moment, J2ME is still in it's development stage and for the moment, shows no sign of slowing down. So like the previous person, I would think you'd definitely be able to make use of it before it gets trashed. And technically, no matter if it becomes obsolete, I still do not believe that any learning is wasted.
And if that doesn't convince you, think about it this way: J2ME is a subset of Java, and even if phones do evolve enough that they are able to support J2SE (which imho, is not going to happen for quite a while.... ), what you do with J2ME will not be gone to waste.
Programming for mobile devices is quite different. Although knowing Java is a huge advantage, there will definitely be things that need to be implemented on mobiles which are not needed in J2SE. So knowing J2ME gives you a good basis on these special implementations. Besides, after doing some work in J2ME, you'll learn all these optimization techniques that are not as important in our normal PC programming, which will benefit you in any type of programming.
The question you should ask yourself first is whether you're interested in programming for mobiles. If so, don't let one author's prediction stop you. Personally, I think his prediction is a little ambitious. Mobiles are progressing, but to be able to handle the entire J2SE, for the moment, that's wishful thinking. It will eventually happen, but i don't think it'd be anytime soon.
    Cheers.

  • What can I do to prevent the control key from not working in the future?

    Background:
I bough an macbook pro about 1 year and 3 months ago and after 9 months of usage my control key stopped working for about an hour or two. This happened every time I turned on or awoke my mac from sleep (lid down).I sent it to an authorized apple service center and they replaced the keyboard.Everything was fine for about 4-5 months when the same thing happened again, ctrl key stopped working but this time not when turning on my mac but at random times and for random intervals.I sent it again to the service center but they told me that this time it won't be for free because my 1 year warranty has expired.I should mention that in European Union and Romania (the country where I am from and from which the mac was purchased) the law is that any electronics device sold has to come with at least 2 years of warranty.Apple seems to ingore this law.
Anyway, after long conversations with apple uk on the phone they agreed to pay for the keyboard but not for the labor which was 70 eur ($100).It's not much but my 2 year warranty should have covered it.The sad part is that I have no guarantee that it's indeed a keyboard error and not something else, this might happen again in 4 months and I doubt this time apple would agree paying for the keyboard (which is 150eur) ($215).
I should also mention that before calling apple uk I tried apple's romanian number (listed on their site) and it didn't work on the 3 phone networks that I've tried (2 fixed and one mobile) which led me to believe that apple support is in fact a big joke.
Suffice to say that I will no longer purchase any apple devices or software, I regret purchasing mac os x lion just a week ago, when I will no longer use it because I intend to sell all my apple gear (timecapsule, iphone4, macbook pro) and buy stuff from companies that value their customers and respect their contracts.
    My questions are this:
    1) why does apple ignore EU and Romanian law?
    2) what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future
    3) can I request that my macbook be more thoroughly inspected? I suspect the keyboard is not the main problem and it will soon happen again as it happened two times already.
    4) can I do something for the repair labor charge to be waved? It is illegal in my country to ask for one in this scenario...

Everyone reading your posts here is just another MacBook Pro user. We're all volunteers, not Apple employees. No one here can speak for Apple.
In my personal opinion, buying Apple products in a country where Apple has no stores and no corporate presence is a risk that the buyer takes knowingly. I don't think it's a wise risk, and I don't recommend that anyone take it. A small percentage of the products sold anywhere are going to have problems, and it makes more sense to buy an inferior product that can at least be serviced locally than to buy a superior product that may have to be sent thousands of miles for repair if anything ever goes wrong with it.

dvd stoped being recognized by my cumputer macbook pro the last ones made before unibody came out anybody have any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • What is the future of AS2?

I'd like to get some thoughts on this from people. Like for example, How Important is it to learn AS2 if you are in the process learning AS3?
I started learning AS3 about a year ago with minimal knowledge of AS2. I have spent the last year just focusing solely on AS3 and as I continue my education in flash programming is there any substantial benefits from spending any time on AS2? The way I've been looking at it is, if I'm going to learn a new technique in Flash I might as well learn in it AS3.
    Any thoughts?
    Thx.

It depends partly on your plans for the present and the future.  I you plan to be doing freelance design work, then learning AS2 may become more of a necessity than a wishful bit of thinking.  You may end up inheriting older projects that need revisions or new features.  While the same could be said were you to be working for some functional group of some large firm, chances are more likely you would be developing new things rather than changing old things, so learning old things becomes less necessary.  Still, in any situation it is always good to have some ability to speak another language.
The good thing about learning AS3 is that you are still learning some of the unique coding elements that relate solely to Flash design.  And knowing them, you become knowledgeable as to what capabilities might exist and what you might need to look for in older versions of the language.  My view of programming and learning languages is... you learn coding concepts and capabilities that can be iinherantly applied to new languages... it is just a matter of determining what syntax/code a new language uses to do what you know it should be able to do based on experience with another language.
