What network adaptors support 802.11ac?

I want to purchase the new airport/time capsule mainly for it's 802.11ac capabilities. I have a mid-2009 macbook pro.
Wondering what network adaptors are out there that I can plug into my usb that can support 802.11ac? I found some but they only support Windows.

Newer AC wireless would need to support USB 3 standard but of course that is not available.

You only have one port that is near capable (actually more than capable if real numbers are used) and that is ethernet. So the best device for you is a second Airport Extreme working as bridge or extend wireless in apple terminology.. really it is not such a bad option since the cost of AC usb 3.0 will be over $100 anyway.

  • Should I wait to buy my iMac when apple upgrades it to support  802.11ac Wi-Fi ?

Since apple released the Macbook air that supports 802.11ac wi fi, is it going to do the same with all the others products? Being so, I understand that if I by an imac today, it will not support 802.11ac. And this imac will not make the most out of the new airport extreme that delivers 802.11ac (even though the new airport extreme supports 802.11n), isn't that right?

Well, it is reasonable to expect that, yes, the other hardware will get upgraded to ac as it gets updated.  As to when any particular model line will get updated, that is anybody's guess.  Nobody has any idea how long you may have to wait for that one particular feature.  Only you can decide if you are better off waiting or getting what you need now.
Are you even maxing out your 802.11n network speed and bandwidth now?  If not, then having ac is sort of moot, isn't it?  Sort of like having a car capable of 200mph, but the traffic volume never lets you get above 70 anyway, it really just does not matter.

  • Does the new ISR platform support 802.11ac APs

    Hello,
Is there a Cisco WLAN controller that is compatible with the new 11ac 3700 APs that can be installed in a 3900 series ISR platform?
    Thank you
    James

Yes and no.  And I don't know which is which.
The current way to stick a WLC into a router is using an SRE.  This is basically a module which contains a hard drive and you create a VM in form of a WLC.  Now the latest SRE firmware is 7.4.121.0 (release date 20 December 2013).
There are currently three models of APs with can support 802.11ac.  They are the 3600*, 3700 and 2700.
Ok, here's where the "kicker" comes in.
The 3600 (notice the "*") can support 802.11ac if you purchase the 802.11ac Wave 1 Module.  The 3600 is supported from firmware version 7.2.X.X but the 802.11ac Wave 1 Module requires a minimum firmware version 7.5.X.X (this version is now "deferred").   So this option doesn't work.
    3700 requires a minmum of 7.6.X.X firmware and the newly-released 2700 requires a soon-to-be-released 7.6MR2 or 8.X.X.X firmware.
Now if what I've mentioned above doesn't confuse you, this next one will bewilder absolutely:  Read the Release Notes for 7.6.X.X and scroll down to the Supported Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Platforms section and it's stated:
Cisco Virtual Wireless Controllers on Cisco Services-Ready Engine (SRE) or Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Module for Integrated Services Routers G2 (UCS-E)
Hence, my response of Yes and No.
    I have two recommendations:
On the bottom of the Release Notes, there's a Feedback link.  Use it.  Put a low score (this guarantees someone will contact you quickly).  When they contact you, ask them to do a proper QC on their documentation because, frankly, they've been "dropping the ball" lately.
    Next, contact TAC.
    Hope this helps.

  • Predictions: When will Lenovo X-series support 802.11ac ?

When do you predict we will see a Lenovo X-series laptop introduced that supports 802.11ac ?
FYI - 2 sites I read for reliable tech info, including home networking:
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/7127/the-joys-of-80211ac-wifi
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews
I'm getting 375-405 mbps by hanging this orb
ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-N900 USB Network Adapter
    http://amzn.to/14ql6WG
off my downstairs Thinkpad's USB port .
That orb pairs with an ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 upstairs.
On the downside, it's something permanently plugged into my USB port.
On the upside, with a USB cord extender, it easily stays put on the laptop coffee table.  And I like the idea of the antenna being further away from my brain.  Most importantly, the performance is compelling. (it seems to be twice as fast as before)

Any Lenovo laptop with mini PCI-E port should support 802.11ac as long as there's no whitelist in the BIOS. I could've put the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 on my Y470, but instead I chose the Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 since the Wireless-AC version has a bluetooth integrated which conflicts with my Broadcom bluetooth that came with the laptop. The Wireless-AC itself works, but both my Broadcom bluetooth and Intel's bluetooth won't work (they both show an yellow triangle with exclamation point on Device manager). The Wireless-N version has no bluetooth so the built-in Broadcom bluetooth works fully.

  • Does iPad 4th generation support 802.11ac

Hi, I've just purchased an Airport Extreme 3TB and have an iPad 4th generation. Wanted to know whether the iPad would benefit from 802.11ac?
    Thx for your time,
    Marco

No iPads currently support 802.11ac, they only support a, b, g, and n

  • VWLC does not support 802.11ac standard?

On data sheet page, on wireless standards i cannot see 802.11ac  to be supported.
why? it is not supported or is just an error on the data sheet.

802.11ac support is tied to the access point and the compatibility with code version on the WLC/vWLC.  SO as long as you have 802.11ac access points and the proper supported WLC/vWLC code, 802.11ac will be available.

when will airport express support 802.11ac

We are all users here on a user-to-user support forum......just like you.....so no one here will have any idea about what a notoriously secretive company like Apple might do, or when they might do it.
If Apple makes an official announcement regarding a new product, then we will all know.

  • Why Airport Extreme 802.11ac on 2.4Ghz does not support 802.11ac?

On my Airport Extreme 802.11a/c, using Wifi Scanner, I can see that:
    2.4ghz has PHY Mode:          802.11b/g/n
    and
    5ghz has PHY Mode: 802.11ac
    On APPLE website:
"AirPort Extreme features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi‑Fi. That means it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time"
My question is why is the 2.4ghz not showing PHY Mode that includes "ac"?
Is my Airport router faulty? if so, I will need to return it.
    Thanks

The "ac" setting only runs on the 5 GHz channel(s) on any router. 2.4 GHz could never support "ac" speeds.

  • Does anybody know of an USB 802.11ac Wifi adapter that is supported by Yosemite 10.10

Ever since upgrading to Yosemite 10.10 my WiFi is slow on my 2007 IMAC. I am trying to find a USB wireless adapter that supports 802.11ac and runs at MHz. So far I cannot find anything

  • Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter Drivers

Hi, I believe the drivers for my network adapter could be out of date and I am unable to find anywhere to download the drivers, would anyone be able to direct me to where I can download drivers for the Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter found in my Alienware 18 laptop, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Current Driver;
Network Adapter : Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter
    Driver Version : 6.30.95.48
    Driver Date : 05/03/2013
    Thanks, Depo.

Add me to the list of people with issues with the Broadcom 802.11ac... I have two identical Alienware 17s, one suffers from constant Wireless Adapter  resets. very aggravating anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes I am discoed and then moments later reconnected.
Additionally, I have seen the major frame stutters, but I just associated that to the WLAN resetting or getting ready to.
I have tried updating Drivers, I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them, I have disabled and enabled the device, I have spent at least four hours on the Dell Troubleshooting pages looking for a resolution, so far nothing has resolved the issue.
I'm at the point I'm thinking it is the Broadcom 802.11ac Adapter
The second Alienware 17 has worked without a single issue.
I could use a little help on this one.

  • How to take advantage of 802.11ac wi-fi with AirPort Extreme?

Greetings. I will be purchasing a new iMac that will support 802.11ac wi-fi and would like to take advantage of this by using the Apple AirPort Extreme but I'm not sure how. I currently have a modem (Cisco DPC3825) from my internet provider, which does not support 802.11ac. If I were to connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem (DPC3825) via an Ethernet cable and then (wirelessly) connect my new iMac to the netowrk, would I receive 802.11ac or just b/g/n still? In addition, when I connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem, will it create two networks (i.e. one network for the AirPort Extremem + my original wifi network) or can you merge it into one network? Hopefully what I'm asking makes sense. Thank you.

If I were to connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem (DPC3825) via an Ethernet cable and then (wirelessly) connect my new iMac to the netowrk, would I receive 802.11ac or just b/g/n still?
802.11ac would be received by the iMac if it connected to the AirPort Extreme wireless signal....and....the iMac was in close proximity to the AirPort Extreme.
802.11ac uses the 5 GHz frequency, and these signals only work well then the router and computer are in the same room or have a line-of-sight relationship  to each other, or very close to that ideal.
In addition, when I connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem, will it create two networks
The AirPort Extreme will create a network with two bands or frequencies.....one  2.4 GHz for "b", "g" and "n" wireless devices and another band, the 5 GHz signal for "n" and "ac" devices.
If you assign the same name to  the AirPort Extreme network that you use for your existing network, and both routers are using the same wireless security settings and password, then everything will act like one "big" network.
If you assign a different name to the AirPort Extreme wireless network, then you will have two different networks....one produced by your existing router and the other produced by the AirPort Extreme.
If you move from one area to another, you will have to log off of one network and log back onto the other network.

  • Upgrade twist wifi to 802.11ac

can i upgrade the wifi card in my twist to an Intel 7260 802.11ac card? I've read about blacklist and whitelist so can I swap the cards or not?

802.11ac is a two way street. Both the router and any connected devices must support 802.11ac to realize the benefits of this newer technology.
Except for the MacBook, it does not appear that any of the other devices that you have listed would support 802.11ac. The "n" connection that you have now is already much faster than your Internet provider can supply to you, though.
If you need a new router, it does makes sense to get one with 802.11ac to support newer devices that you might add with 802.11ac capabilities.
The AirPort Extreme might provide a bit better range than your current router with your normal "n" devices. Hard to say.
Bottom line....I doubt that you would notice any significant improvement in performance on your network over what you have now. The next wave of 802.11ac routers will be coming soon, likely with some "new" added feature. Might be a good idea to hold on for now if you can, to see what the future will bring.
