What new printer to buy?

My niece needs a new printer to use with her 3 year old iBook. It doesn't have USB 2.0 and I think she's running 10.2.8. Her free printer that she got when she purchased the iBook has died. She prints mostly text and the occasional photo or color page. She's looking for an inexpensive or reasonably priced printer that works well. It would be great if the ink cartridges either lasted a bit longer than the norm or were reasonably priced.
Any suggestions?

Avoid HPs. The hardware is magnificent, the software *****. if you must buy HP, get 3rd-party software. Usually free. Usually far better than HP's software. I have several HPs here, but I also use 3rd-party drivers for them, HP's own software irritates the **** out of me. If HP would wake up and produce even half-assed software I'd say that HP printers beat every other vendors' stuff.
Epsons work well. They drink ink something awesome if you use best output and do a lot of graphics. If the print heads jam you might as well just get a new printer, that boy's history. There are Epsons which sell for about $40-50. They're basically disposable printers, as the black cartridge for them costs about $20 and the colour cart about $25, so what Epson's saying is that when you run out of ink, buy a new printer.
Canons give very good output but the ink's expensive. A lot of Canons (and several Epsons) now come with ink in separate carts, so that instead of two carts, one black and one tricolour, you have four carts, one black, one each magenta, cyan, and yellow. (High end printers can have additional colours: light magenta and light cyan are commonest, but there's also light black and light yellow. And metallic colours, such as gold and silver.) Typically each cart in a four-cart machine will cost about $10-15, so they look cheaper than the carts for traditional two-cart machines. But you get less ink per cart, and four carts still add up to $40-60...
If she doesn't really need colour, and the budget can extend to a low-end laser, HP and Brother and other vendors have sub-$150 monochrome lasers. Brother's HL2040 lists for $150, and is commonly available for $100, for example. The HL2070N is the network version of the 2040, and lists for $200. I got mine for $135. I spent more than that on ink for my herd of HPs over a year.

  • What do you look for when buying a new printer?

Ease of use and good drivers.
Ever tried to use a Ricoh, Konica Minolta, or Kyocera MFP?
Printers are stupidly emotive, get it wrong and it's like you've punched their kids or something.

  • What is the best printer to buy for Airport Express printing?

Help! I need a new printer.
    Required features:
    • under $300
    • multi-function (fax not required)
    • auto-document feeder
    • prints 2 sided
    • USB to Airport Express, or itself be wireless printer--(bluetooth seems to not have the range I need: 35-60 feet)
    • affordable ink
    • photo printing a plus, not required
    • color printing a plus, not required.
I bought a Canon PIXMA MP780 only to discover that it is incompatible with Airport Express! The PIXMA MP750 seems an option (for printing only--Airport seems not to work with Scanning). But the 750 seems to be all but unavailable anymore.
I am considering upgrading from my old iBook G3 600mHz to a PowerBook G4, but this shouldn't make much difference regarding which printer to buy.
Any help? What printers have worked well for you?
    Thanks,
    Stephen
    iBook G3 600mHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   640mb RAM

Obviously I would prefer to be able to use scanning over the wireless, but I am content to plug it in directly as needed, especially if there were a second USB port on the printer.
Do you know this Brother machine you suggest? Do you recommend it? Does it have all the features I mention above?
Do you know the Canon MP750? I am told it does print through Express.
    Thanks for your help.

Do you want all functions of your new all-in-one
printer be accessible over a wireless connection, or
are you content to live with wireless printing but
plugging the printer directly into your Mac's USB
port each time you want to scan something? For all
functions to work over a wireless connection you
    really need a network-ready all-in-one printer - and
finding a good one that costs under $300 could be a
real challenge (the Brother MFC-420CN is one of the
    few).

  • I need to buy a new printer! Compatibility

I need to buy a new printer this weekend as mine has just broke.
    I don't like HP
Can someone tell me if cannon printers will work with the soon to be released Apple print application? Or what brands are compatible I've heard it's only HP but this does not makensense to me.
Please help as I'm buying tomorrow.

As of now, the only printers to support AirPrint are the HP Officejet Pro 8500A, the HP Photosmart Premium Fax e-All-in-One, and the HP Photosmart e-All-in-One. Any printer that is connected to a computer and shared on the network through that computer will also work, although the computer must be turned on and connected to the network. Other printers may be compatible eventually, but at the moment, only the 3 HP printers support it. Several other printers are supported by printing applications.

  • What new laptops are coming to Best Buy soon (June or early July)?

Anyone have confirmations or rumors of what new laptops are coming soon to BestBuy?

"Markus" Please read my comments below
That is the exact news I was hoping for. I had one of the 3 blue label laptops with the Intel Wireless Display (Dell 1569). I Loved everything about it, except it was garbage. I had 3 of them. First one, the Media Center crashed and GeekSquad couldnt fix it, second one came with a squeaky mouse button and they replaced it again, and  for the third and the worst one. The Wi-Fi card actually burnt and melted the bottom of my laptop plastic (left an indention of my finger print on the bottom of the laptop. Thank goodness, even though the laptop was 2 months old, the manager gave me a full refund in the form of a gift card.)
So, I am basically looking for the same exact type of laptop, but would actually be reliable. The Dell had the Wi-DI, an I5 processor, lighted keyboard, and a lot of other extras. Should we expect to see something compariable coming in that time frame that you mentioned?
Also, not to question your timeframe. but from looking at Intels website, it stated that the 3 blue label laptops that came with the WI-DI (Intel Wireless Display) would start to be at Best Buy stores by January 17th and with them having a 6 month exclusive contract on that technology. Wouldn't that mean that there would not being any new Intel Wireless Display Technology laptops until atleast June 17th?
Lastly, any new laptops coming in that timeframe or a little later (a couple weeks or so) that would be equipped with Nvidia Optimus graphics card? As I read and saw a youtube video showing that the Nvidia Optimus graphics card actually work with the Intel Wireless Display Technology.

Printopia is another option but be aware that since these solutions effectively act as a print server and AirPrint receiver, they require a computer to be running on the same WiFi network.
Canon also has a couple of apps in the App Store that might facilitate this on non-AirPrint printers. Check out...

  • My Lexmark X2670 printer doesn't work right since I reinstalled the Firefox 3,6 version. I keep getting the alignment page to print over and over. Is there a problem between the two? Do I need a new printer driver? What?Daisynew66

I had to change my hrowser to Firefox because Internet Explorer 9 doesn't work with my ancestry.com program. I can't uninstall Internet Explorer 9. I got Firefox 4 and it didn't work either. I started having problems with my printer working at all then. l was told to go to Firefox 3.x. I looked and there is no 3.x it is 3.5 or 3.6. I downloaded 3.6. Now I keep getting a alignment page and end up having to shut off my printer. I'm using way too much ink. I'm almost out with no hope of getting more ink until I get paid. I can't find anyplace that says to update a driver or that I need a plug-in or what might be I've done everything I know to do.wrong. It has new port cables. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Do I need to uninstall the printer and reinstall it again? daisy

I just figured out the print quality issue for my wife with her new iMac and new printer.
She replaced both at once and she couldn't understand why her Artisan 730 was lower quality then her Epson R280 when they had the same specs.
Turns out the newer printer had the option to connect via wifi which we used during setup.
The driver options are completely different depending on how you connect.
Once I connected via USB the correct options were available and the print quality was better.
Looking at the R2400 it dies not have wifi, but while researching the problem for my wife someone esle was having an issue updating to the latest printer driver.
If you go into the print utility from the Printer and Scanner system preference and under the general tab you should have driver 5.5.
One user had to delete the old printer driver before Software Update loaded the newer printer driver.

On my MacBook Pro (w Snow Leopard) I always had to reconnect my wifi at home when it woke up. I upgraded my router from an old Netgear to a newer N D-Link and stopped having to do that.
I would be surprised you would have that problem with an Airport Extreme, you might check to see if there is a firmware update for it.

  • To buy a new printer or new print head?

    Hi,
I have a canon i9100 a3 printer which is 6 years old. the print head has had it, so i need to either buy a new print head for £60, or buy a new printer and i can't decide which one would be better.
I don't want to spend more than around £250 on a new printer.
So my question is, would the extra £190 on a new printer be worth the extra quality, of as i've already invested £350 in the i9100 would it be better to buy a new print head for it as the difference would be negligible.
    thanks!

    Hello Martin,
I think one point that may have been missed by everyones price offerings is that you have an A3 capable printer. I don't think you will be able to get another A3 printer for anything under £250. The Canon iX5000 is the cheapest of the current Canon A3 printers and it retails for AUS$599. Checking the NexTag UK site, the prices range from £235 to £357.
But even with those prices, there is definitely advantages to buying new rather than spend money on an old dog. The increase in the number of inks used and the advances in ink permanence are one factor. If you are printing mainly A3 posters, then the new ChromaLife inks print a very nice image in combination with 6 to 8 ink printers on photo paper.
Driver support would be the next important matter. If you do update to 10.6, you want to ensure that the your model is also supported, something that a lot of early adopters have not factored and are being caught out.
The last item is parts. Vendors typically keep parts for 5 to 7 years. If you have had the printer for 6 years but it was already out for six months before you bought it, then you may only have another 6 month window of being able to get more parts should something else fail...

You should be able to find a Mac OSX driver for that printer. Did you check with the manufacturer/'s website?

I backed up my ipad to the cloud as it had a broken screen so I swaped it out for a new one and now I cant restore because the new Ipad has IOS 6 and my back up is 6.1!  This is what I get for buying an Ipad twice in a week because of a broken screen? $500 the first buy and then another $299 plus tax for the swaped out one that I can't restore with my backup data.

I assume that you will have to set up as new since it will not let you restore from the backup. Then after you set it up, you can restore from the iCloud backup. The backup should not disappear be use you are setting this device up as new. Your backup should still be in iCloud.
However, after you activate the iPd and update the software, you will have to erase the device in order to restore from the Cloud backup, that is the only way to get to the iCloud backup.
Copied from the article that linked you to this discussion ....
    Resolution
Update your device to the latest version of iOS to be able to restore the backup.

i contacted what I thought was Brother Support for my new printer, then I got skeptical.  He gained access through a program called TeamViewer, is my Mac safe?

They're probably just interested in getting $ from you, there are several companies who advertise in a way that suggests 'official' support for all sorts of things. Unfortunately, if they had access as you describe, they potentially could have installed other software and/or read any of your files.
Ideally - change all passwords for email/banking/login & restore a backup from before this happened.

If you did, you can browse to the Apple Store > click Account in the top right > click View Order History. From there, you can view orders over the last 18 months and print invoices.

  • I upgraded to Yosemite and I'm told I need to buy a new printer. Any way around this?

Hello ~ I recently upgraded to Yosemite. Unfortunately, I didn't realize (didn't notice?) that, as a result, my Canon MP620 printer is no longer compatible with my Mac. I certainly don't want to buy a new printer and, with my limited use of my computer, I really don't need and update. Do I have any options? Thank you.

Do you know that it's not compatible with Yosemite because you've tried it and it doesn't work? Canon is showing software that's compatible with Mavericks, as well as some which is compatible with Yosemite, and if you haven't already installed it, you might give it a try.
