What next? to increase my PS skills

I am a web developer to give you a rough idea of what I need out of PS.
I have gone through some basic courses. I feel comfortable using tools and layers as well as other panels.
So the foundation for my Photoshop skills has been set. However, efficient use of time is crucial in my life and I had some options as to what to do in the future to increase my PS skills.
Option #1: Google around for things like "photoshop brush" / "photoshop tutorial" / "photoshop text effect" / etc. Go about learning things in this manner.
OR
Option #2: Get one of those books or courses and go through some kind of structured formal medium level course.
* Of course I will be learning how to slice things up for images on the web, but what path does one take to become REALLY good with PS? I am asking the seasoned pros here what they think is the best route in terms of efficiency and efficacy.
Thanks in advance !

Now, I am old-school - I like books. I find the Classroom in a Book for PS to be very good. These have gotten better over the years too, as more of the authors have started going into more of the "why," where it used to be almost exclusively on the "how."
I am also a big fan of Photoshop User magazine, which is part of a membership to NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals). It has continuing series on PS basics, Web, video, 3D and advanced PS techniques, plus a Q & A section. It's the only magazine that I stuff into my briefcase for long airplane trips.
Many sing the praises of both the Lynda.com and the Total Training tutorials. I'm more book oriented, so while I have enjoyed those DVD tutorials, I am more inclined to have a printed reference in my library. I have several volumes that are more commercial photography-PS related, but would assume that some of these authors, like Ben Wilmore, or Scott Kelby, has probably done some Web-oriented books too. The ones that I have are pretty specific to one use of Photoshop. While I do a lot of work that ends up on the Web, I spend more time in print and in video, than doing Web-oriented material.
Also, I grew up with PS, from the first day it hit the PC, so I am probably looking for some different material - mostly what's new in the current version of PS, that I might not have experienced yet, or maybe techniques that are outside of my "box." There are so many ways to do things in PS, that finding a better way, can be important. Also, having used the program almost daily for decades will tend to channel one's thinking into one path - there are others, and I learn something new here almost daily.
Brings me to the last comment. When you have the time, read through this forum. Lot of great ideas here. Lot of smart users here. Ignore the myriad "Can't Install My Pirated Copy of PS - Can You Give Me Your S/N?" posts, and concentrate on the ones that actually ask how to do something in PS. In the "good old days," there used to be more of those, but there still are some great ones around. When I picked up an Adobe NLE program (the little-brother to the one that I had used for years), the first thing that I did was read every post in that forum - about 8000 over about three days. That program had no manual, so I wanted to get oriented. I learned much about my version, from posts about earlier versions.
Well, one more comment - if Adobe still prints manuals, get one, even if you have to pay good $'s for it. Stick it into your briefcase, and fly with it. While at your Dr's office, waiting, waiting, read it. When you have finished it, start over. Some things that did not quite sink in will now make more sense. I also find a good index better than a Google search. [I do feel that the Adobe manuals were better in the past, but they are trying to move 100% to on-line Help, but if one does not know the exact terminology, a Search will end up empty, or in the wrong place.]
Good luck, and enjoy. PS is one of the most powerful programs, that I have ever used, and is still fun, all these years later.

  • What good is increased status

I was reading FAQs, and I saw where it says,
"If you submit a reply to another member's question topic, you are eligible to receive points from that member.... These points will, in turn, increase a member's ranking (status level)", "your accumulated points will increase your status level" and "you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values."
What I'm wondering, is, what good will all those points and increased ranking/status/level do me? Does that increase my ability to do something, or is it just to give me a sense of accomplishment - or something I'm not thinking of?
    Thanks,

    Hi Ted,
    Nice comment indeed
"Why do I so often see helpers reminding/requesting helpees to note the "helpful" or "solved" for them?"
This didn't happen before November 11, 2005, under the old system when the points total was personal and hidden.
This New Discussions system that ostensibly shows a "Top Rated Members" list, has caused this new behaviour among the most addicted, for a few various and very human reasons.
Then of course when one or two or three very old and regular members begin to ask for points, it sets an example and spreads quickly as a new habit that has nothing to do with technical spirit, and indeed goes even against a certain "Mac spirit" we used to share, if we still see any good in such old-fashioned notion?
So, now that this "Top Rated Members" list is on display, AND now that we've had plenty of time since 11-Nov-2005 to follow the "results",
we can clearly point some evolution in the Discussions functioning, as for example, among others:
    - A possibility for some who own a commercial website, to use it as yet another ad banner.
    - An exacerbated sense of competition among many helpers, not anymore in the direction of good tipping, research and will to learn more technical skills, rather in the direction of speed-replying always the same questions and simplifying shotgun solutions.
    - Indeed this increased sense that Points are important. Obviously, since they are on display!!
    What good is increased status:
It depends on how members see it, and on the kinds of means to increase the status.
I guess a system where robot-posting and a sense of childish competition are encouraged, doesn't give/get the same idea as in a system where it's more about constructive research, friendly side-tips, patient time and interest taken in our wonderful Macs interesting technical questions.
Note that AD software, functioning and even crew have already changed in the past.
This "star system" we are experiencing now may as well be replaced with a better one in the future?
Still, have a good time with your Macs and the AD!

  • What Next - I Gots The Itch?

    Hey All...
Alright.  A few months ago I went with my AMD64 rig (as specified below) and have not had the same number of problems that I see some other users have had.  Any crashes or lockups I have encountered have been linked to AGP fast-writes, and o'cing my GPU.  I have not even touched o'cing my CPU yet, as I am fine with stock speeds right now.
Thus, the question of the hour is what next?  I feel that my rig is missing something that would increase it's performance (substantially), and just can place my hand on it.  Any thoughts on what I can do to get that extra level of juice?
Now, before I get flamed, I really would like thoughts that are not based on overclocking the cpu.  And since I am not providing you with the details of any synthetic benches I may have run, I am more pointing this question to any component that can be added to make it the best it can be.
Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated.

You appear to have a pretty decent system as it is - my advice would be to enjoy it as it is (in 4 or 5 years it is going to be obsolete anyway - such is life with PCs)
You know, part of me (a BIG part) knew that going in.  I was just grasping at straws.  I am hesitant in o'cing this puppy because of the failures I have had with the P.O.S. PNY 6800GT I have in it.  Unlike many others who have purchsed PNYs version of this GPU, I have not been successful in achieving the same results as everyone else.  I can barely get to 370/1040 without hard crashing/locking up.  My temps are fine (have NV Silencer 5 w/AS5), and still hard locks.  I even flashed the bios on the card to up the voltage to 1.4.
Due to that, I don't want to start jerking around with ocing the CPU/Memory because of the luck I have had, and the $$$$ I have spent.
Anywho, I am off my Whine Podium.

  • Turning to next page increasingly slower as page number higher

I noticed that the time required for turning to the next page increases more or less linearly with the page number, i.e. moving from page 10 to 11 takes about ten times as long as moving from page 1 to 2. This is soon becoming very annoying!
    Anybody with a similar experience?
    Solution?

    Niel, thanks for the clarification.
I the page turning was linear both in safari & TenFourFox.
    Safari page 4 - 8 seconds, 5-7, 7-9, 12-8, 13-10,18-10, &  24-10
    TenFourFox page 5 - 11 seconds, 6-11, 7-10, 9-13, 10-12, 11-11, 21-12, 22-13, & 23-12
    What does this mean?
    1) As a test, you should try this in a clean environment.  only one web browser running.  only one window with only one tab
    2) Run activity monitor.  See what may be interfering.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
    3) a swag at the problem...
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    You should run disk utility
    a) verify the disk
    b) update your permissions.
    Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive is being checked.

You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.

I am using Tiger 10.4.11 on an imac g3 600.
Too bad I can't combing Safari & TenFourFox.  Safari seems to load pages faster than TenFourFox, but seems to slow down after the page is loaded ... Javascript?

  • My 4TB G-Drive failed after (Firewire) installation of Maverick.  A 1TB G-drive using USB works.  What next?

I have an IMac running OS X 10.9.1.
I purchased a new 4TB G-Drive.  After installation with Time Machine the drive correctly made backups for about 2 weeks.  I installed Maverick.
Then I began to see the message “Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder”
I called G-Technology. Using the erase function of Disc Utility we received the message “Disk erase failed.  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk”. It was determined that the disk was bad and I returned it to the vendor.
A second and then a third disk experienced similar failures after only two backups.  G-Technology then said the problem was a computer problem
I called Apple support and allowed them access to my computer.  After their intervention the disk worked for two backups and then failed.
    I purchased a 1 TB G-Drive yesterday.
I thought I would give it a test and so I made it the backup drive for time machine.  It made a primary backup and has been continuing to back up without the feared error message.
I went to the internet and have discovered that my problem has been experienced by others. It only occurs after an upgrade to Maverick.
It also only occurs with a Firewire connection.
The new drive has a USB connector.  It works fine.
    What next?

Which iMac (please be very specific) and also why have you not updated to 10.9.2?

Besweet, I'm having the very same problem with 60GB colour which was bought new and worked for 6 months before suddenly just not being recognised by PC. I hadn't changed anything at all.
I've followed all troubleshooting advice and reinstalled and updated iTunes and iPod updater software but all troubleshooting routes seem to hit the dead end of either the need to access the iPod via the PC (which isn't possible as it's not showing up at all) or the iPod in disc mode stuck at "ok to disconnect".
It's still under 1yr warranty so will have to take to a dealer.
I'm sorry that's not much help for you but at least you know it's not a unique problem.

I can't sign in or out of iCloud.  Forgot the password to an email address I no longer have access to.  What next?  From what I'm reading in the forums, once the email address is set up it cannot be changed.  True?  If so, um, stupid.
Message to log in to iCloud every time I reply or forward an email.  Have to indicate to ignore every time.  Annoying.

    Hello florabb,
You may be able to change or reset the password on this old iCloud/Apple ID account, even if you no longer have access to the email address associated with it. Once the password is changed/updated, you should be able to log your iPhone out of the old iCloud/Apple ID account and log in to the correct new account. You may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud - Apple Support
Sign in with a different Apple ID on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

My Ipod mini syncs, but when I go to play, no sound.  I've tried multiple speakers and headphones. No Go.  What next?
My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number.  I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

This is the iPad in the Enterprise forum. You'll be more likely to get help with your issue if you ask in the appropriate iPod forum.

On a side note, you might want to make a backup before you delete old 9i home.
