What next? Upgrading my G4 GigaEther

I have a 450MHZ/2x 1MB Cache Gigabit Ethernet G4 it has
256MB SDRAM 40 GB HD/DVD/ 128 16MB/ Ultra ScsI Card/Gigabit ENET/ MDM
I was wondering what I could do to upgrade this Mac? I have orderd 2 516Mbs of Sdram but I don't know what else I can do to upgrade. can I increase the MHZ? if so how and what would that do? I'd like to try to upgrade it as much as possible before I have to buy another comp. I have a LAcie external Burner I use to burn disks and an external zip drive that has seen better days. Any help would be much appreciated.

That model also shipped with a dual 500 MHz processor. You may be able to put that in it ... provided you get exactly the right one. I do not think this upgrade will be cost effective.
I suggest you move up to at least the Digital Audio model, with its faster Bus speed and the processor socket moved to a wide-open spot next to the backpanel.

  • I currently have OS X version 10.5.8 what is my next upgrade?

I currently have Mac OS X version 10.5.8 - intel processor what should my next upgrade be?  I need to upgrade in order to accommodate my new ipod nano.

If you have a PPC iMac 10.5.8 is as far as you can do. If you have an Intel iMac:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

OS ie OEL 4 and i manually upgraded my db on 9i to 10g.Just get rid of the 9i home (assuming you don't have anything running from that home) and clean up the entries in oratab that refer to the 9i home.
On a side note, you might want to make a backup before you delete old 9i home.

    Hi David,
You need to download CS6 Photoshop and enter the serial number for CS6 Photoshop and then you would be prompted to enter the serial number for qualifying product.
Enter the CS5 serial number in order to install and activate CS5 Photoshop on your machine.

If your Mac qualifies, you can upgrade directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain LIon.
Your Mac must be one of the following models:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

From here >  Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
If you have v10.6.8 installed, you should have access to the App Store when you can purchase and download Mountain Lion.
Check your Applications folder for the App Store.
If your Mac does not meet Mountain Lion requirements, you may be able to upgrade to v10.7 Lion.
Read here > OS X Lion - Technical Specifications
Lion v10.7 is no longer available from the App Store but you can purchase from Apple directly:  800-767-2775

Apple has been updating OS X 10.6 with security updates, although the version is still 10.6.8 max.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
Depending upon what your machine is and it's RAM amount if it can go to 10.7 or 10.8
We need to know the Model Identifier and the RAM amount.
Older machines that came with 10.5 or 10.4 originally are not advised to proceed any further than 10.6.8 due to age and performance issues on the newer OS X versions of 10.7 and 10.8. Best buy a new machine if you want 10.8, doesn't make sense to buy software and have a slow machine with a older box. Either sell/donate it or use it for backup.
Also 10.7 and above will NOT run your PPC based software your currently running.
So before you upgrade, it's best to take stock of all your third party software and if they will run on the newer OS X verison. This site can assist.

  • My 4TB G-Drive failed after (Firewire) installation of Maverick.  A 1TB G-drive using USB works.  What next?

I have an IMac running OS X 10.9.1.
I purchased a new 4TB G-Drive.  After installation with Time Machine the drive correctly made backups for about 2 weeks.  I installed Maverick.
Then I began to see the message “Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder”
I called G-Technology. Using the erase function of Disc Utility we received the message “Disk erase failed.  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk”. It was determined that the disk was bad and I returned it to the vendor.
A second and then a third disk experienced similar failures after only two backups.  G-Technology then said the problem was a computer problem
I called Apple support and allowed them access to my computer.  After their intervention the disk worked for two backups and then failed.
    I purchased a 1 TB G-Drive yesterday.
I thought I would give it a test and so I made it the backup drive for time machine.  It made a primary backup and has been continuing to back up without the feared error message.
I went to the internet and have discovered that my problem has been experienced by others. It only occurs after an upgrade to Maverick.
It also only occurs with a Firewire connection.
The new drive has a USB connector.  It works fine.

My Ipod mini syncs, but when I go to play, no sound.  I've tried multiple speakers and headphones. No Go.  What next?
My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number.  I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

This is the iPad in the Enterprise forum. You'll be more likely to get help with your issue if you ask in the appropriate iPod forum.

  • A suggestion for the next upgrade.

When I want to separate my iPod I of course select the "eject" on the screen. However there are times when I just want to eject and keep the iPod connected (recharging, seeing what's on the iPod since the new upgrade took that away, listen to my tunes that won't skip). If I want to reconnect though I have to physically remove the cable and reattach. For the next upgrade couldn’t you have an icon at the top that shows the status of the iPod, say a pair of plugs connected and in blue, then when disconnected they’re separate and in yellow, so that if I wanted to reconnect I can just press the icon and it reconnects through software? Thanks.

  • Why do I get constant Game Center notifications when I'm playing games? Seriously, if there isn't an easy way to turn off gamecenter, I'll be switching to a Microsoft phone at my next upgrade. I don't want this garbage popping up while I play my games.

Why do I get constant Game Center notifications when I'm playing games? Seriously, if there isn't an easy way to turn off these notifications, I'll be switching to a Microsoft phone at my next upgrade. I don't want this garbage popping up while I play my games. What a worthless, obnoxious piece of junk. Apple, stop ignoring your customers!

How is Apple ignoring their customers, exactly?  If you don't want Game Center, why did you sign into it?
Sign out, launch an enabled game.  Game Center pops up, close it, launch the game again, it pops up, close it again.
Now it doesn't pop up any longer.
    All as documented.

  • Disk Failure: what next?

my late 2012 iMac slowed to unusuable state after Yosemite upgrade then on reboot it failed.  After verbose reboot and disk utility verify/repair I'm at the state that it is unrepairable.  So, what next?
disk utility tells me to copy everything I can, then reformat and restore what I copied.  Is it as simple as this?  Won't I still be on the same failed HDD?
I have a cloud based backup of all my documents and settings, but not a disk image.  So I'm thinking I can do one of the following:
1). Do as I think disk utility is telling me and transfer the full disk image to and external use drive I have, reformat the internal drive, then copy the image back.  This sounds too good to be true?
2.). Get a copy of my documents from the cloud service, reformat and reinstall OS X from disc utility, copy over my documents?  I assume I would have to reinstall my apps going this route.
3). I need to get a new physical internal drive installed by an apple place and let them do the transfer ( what does that run? US$)
    4) some other option
    thanks for any input!

If you wish to prove to yourself the need for a new drive, then you will need to re-partition and reformat it, then install OS X on it. If it still won't work properly then the drive is probably bad. The Yosemite upgrade had nothing to do with it. A new upgrade won't kill the drive, but it can cause problems to appear that have always been present.
