What optical drive does the G5 iSight use?

My question relates to the G5 iSight model. A friend has given me his to fix since the original drive no longer reads.
What kind of drive can I use? A standard laptop slot loading drive or does it have to be an apple certified Superdrive?
Thanks for your help on this.

If you go to the Apple logo and click About this Mac, then on More Info, then in under Hardware, click on Disk Burning, and it will show what Superdrive was installed - probably the Matshita DVD-R UJ-846.
They are not the most 'sturdy' of items, alledgedly because thay were originally designed for a Macbook (horizontal operation, whereas in the iMac they are asked to work in the vertical position).
Mine failed a few months ago, in as much as it would do everything except burn DVDs. For that I now use an external Samsung Super Writemaster DVD writer that cost the reasonable amount of £27 from Amazon! Works a treat. I saw no good reason to pay up to £200 for a more sophisticated make and model!
Getting an internal Superdrive replaced by an Apple Centre or authorised dealer would cost a lot more.
Your call!

  • How much space on the hard/flash drive does the Operating System use on the macbook

I Would like to buy a MacBook but the actual space on the flash hard drive is quite minimal. How much of this small space does the operating system use?

In order for Yosemite needs to have at least 10 GB of free space for the use of OS X and the things it does. If you have less then that the performance with start to degrade until eventually OS X will freeze up.
If you think you will be getting close to that you might want to consider getting and external disk drive where you can store some of your file such as music, videos movies and photos.

  • What bluetooth protocol does the iPod Touch use with a keyboard?

    Hi...
Say, does anyone know what bluetooth protocol apple is using for their bluetooth keyboards for the iPhone and iPod Touch? It is probably HID, but the people at RIM (i.e. BlackBerry) use SPP. So I would think many 3rd party keyboards use SPP (Serial Port Protocol). But, then, there are many posts about "I wish Apple would support SPP" because people want to build apps that interface with external HW that only supports SPP.
What I want to do? (you ask)
I've one of these nice / expensive Think-out-side portable folding keyboards (good). That only has a serial interface (bad). There are many bluetooth "dongles" out there with serial ports (good). But they only support SPP or Serial Port Protocol (bad? maybe? depends).
See, I know RIM (BlackBerry) people support SPP on their devices. But I haven't heard (found) word one about what the iPod Touch supports. I would hate to spend $80 on one of these dongles and find out it doesn't work.
So, what does the iPod Touch use when talking to the bluetooth keyboard?
    -thanks

From page 37 of iOS 4.1 Touch Users Guide:
    Using an Apple Wireless Keyboard
    For ease of typing, you can use an Apple Wireless Keyboard (available separately;
iPod touch 3rd generation or later).
Regarding the original questions, the BT profiles supported by the Touch arelisted here:

  • What hard drive does the iMac use ?

I have a 17 inch iMac with intel Core Duo with 80GB hard drive. The screen is damaged because of vertical lines and i am replacing it myself and i thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the hard drive while i am at it.
Am i correct in assuming that the hard drive is a SATA 2.5" laptop drive ?
    I found a cheap Hitachi 200GB 2.5 inch 3 gb/sec 5400 RPM, 8MB Cache, 12MS SATA II drive. Is this suitable ?
Will any 2.5 inch SATA drive, be it SATA, SATA II, SATA III etc. work fine ?

Are you sure, the 17" Early Core Duo iMac's came with a 160GB Hard Drive.
see > iMac (Early 2006) - Technical Specifications
No, the 17" Early Core Duo iMac uses a 3.5 SATA Drive.
Personally I have upgraded the Hard Drive in several Early Core Duo's using both 320GB and 500GB WD Cavair Blue's.

  • What PHY interface does the MGBT1 SFP Use ?

I am using the Cisco MGBT1 SFP Transceiver in an SFP Module Interface on a Xilinx ML555 development board.  I need to configure the MAC that I am using to talk to the MGBT1, but don’t know what PHY interface the MGBT1 supports.  Does it use SGMII, RGMII, GMII, MII or 100Base-X PHY interface? Detailed specifications on the MGBT1 would  be very helpful, but I can not find them on your site.  Do you use transceivers manufactured by Marvell?  If so, which one.

No the MGBT1 is not SGMII it is 1000base-X.
I have just got an MGBT1 SFP working with a Xilinx Virtex5 hard TEMAC.
So far I have not found a way to access the PHY registers in the MGBT1. Other SFP's I have tried allow access to the PHY via the IIC interface.

    Hi,
It's a CR2032 battery which you can buy at any where including many supermarkets. You can find it near the right corner on the following image (round):

  • What Encoder Settings Does "Share with Facebook" Use?

With iMovie '11 you can Share/Facebook, which will upload the current project to a Facebook personal page. The problem is, I need to upload the movie to a group page that I administer. Yes, this has been asked before, and the answer was "Export to a local drive/desktop and upload to your Facebook group." Got it.
BUT... USING WHAT ENCODER SETTINGS? When you upload directly to Facebook, it's a "black box"--all you can choose is resolution. The video is beautiful when it's finished uploading. But, I HAVE NO IDEA what those encoder settings are and I've tried about every other combination of MP4/H.264 and the video looks typically like dog excrement--never as good as when I upload with the Facebook option.
What encoder settings does the Facebook option use???
    - George -

If you want to replicate the black box, use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE...
You can also use SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER. YOu will find the resulting movie buried in the project package.
If you want to roll your own...
    SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME
    QuickTime Movie
    h.264 as video codec.
AAC or uncompressed as audio codec.
Set keyframes to automatic (or 24).
Set bitrate to 16,000 kbps, but you can back off from there. You may go as low as 8,000 but you would have to experiment.
It is difficult to get better quality than the default settings, but some people are able to get similar quality at a reduced file size. With YouTube and FaceBook, you should not care about file size. I would err on the side of quality, because FaceBook and YouTube may recompress in their proprietary format, and you want to give them as much to work with as possible.
If you want more detail, here is an article from YouTube on how to optimize settings. The same should work fine for FaceBook.

  • Optical Drive on the iSight G5 Model

Please-does anyone know of any site(s) that show how to change the optical drive of the iSight Mac? I'm specifically interested in seeing a picture with connections to the drive. I'm putting together an iSight computer and there is a wire that I think may go to the optical drive which is labeled on the mother board as temp. 2. I want to find out whether this connector goes from the mother board to the optical drive and where else it may go. I'm hoping a site will show the optical drive and all of its connections as seen from the front. There is a French article that shows how to fix an iSight but I cannot find it. I know about Jim Warholic and Bad Caps and others that show how to change the HD and the Japanese sites that actually do not show the iSight version.

    tintinlad:
In another post I had asked for this website: http://macboostfr.free.fr/?p=196 that you just posted.
I read through it before and I thought I had saved it but no one knew about it or mentioned it until you just did. Of all of the publications dealing with the iSight, I think this is the best one. The photos are quite good and the limited amount of writing that I have interpreted is also quite good. If there ever were a reference article about the iSight, this is it. Thank you very much.
I have taken it apart and changed only three capacitors on the main board/mother board that I thought seemed defective but unfortunately when I put everything together again, the same screen came up as before. I get a series of horizontal lines through out the whole monitor and the Apple logo comes up with two broken up Apple logos on each side of it and the spinning wheel which eventually freezes.
There are two other boards: one covered with black plastic and the other square and uncovered. They both seem good but who knows. It was an interesting experiment and I learned a lot but it didn't work out yet.
I will next try to transfer data from the HD drive to another drive although I have backed up everything via Time Machine to an external HD and I am now trying to see what I have saved. I hope the latest is on this external HD via Time Machine. Hope I haven't lost too much if anything.

Does the internal mic use USB, Bluetooth, or analog technology. (Rosetta Stone voice recorder/analyzer is crashing app)

  • HT2801 Why is there no optical drive in the iMAC

I am curious as to what the thought process was with not fitting an optical drive to the new iMAC. I believe this was a financial choice, ensuring that the customer pays the already over priced cost for the main equipment. Then as the equipment really isn't fit for purpose it then forces the customer to pay more at an overly high rate for peripherals that should be included.
This is the equivalent of buying a car and finding that it doesn't have a windscreen. You can still drive the car, but it's not all that usefull really.
The only problem with these forums is that you never get the manufacturers actually participating. They take your money but are not prepared to either capitulate to their error, or defend their standpoint.
I purchased a 13' MAC Book Pro Retina, and am very pleased with it. I own an iPhone and an iPad Mini. So I am not an Apple antichrist! I think that those in the silver tower of power have forgotten who keeps them in that tower and provides them with their end of year bonuses etc, it's us...the customer! We are looking after you Apple, how about looking after us for a change.

I think that you caon only take form over function so far. I think that this direction that both Apple and Microsoft are taking is towards an "everything is in the cloud" position. This is all very well until you find that using Word will cost you x pence or that you have to then pay for access to iMovie and edit your movies in the cloud. It is human nature to be averse to change and if that change is too steep a curve then it is also human nature to push back. I have read a lot of threads that are asking this very same question and the only people that don't seem to be joining in hte discussion is Apple themselves and that is a pity really. It would be nice to hear what they have to say on this subject and to understand the rational behind it.

Yes, if you do a fresh install of the operating system, it's like a brand new machine.
No, if you restore from a backup like a bootable clone or TimeMachine drive.
