What OS does a Mac Require?

Hey folks,
Is there any way to determine which OS a machine REQUIRES in order to run. I know, often what ships with the unit isn't what is required. Since I like to keep all my machines on a standard install, I often find myself installing a slightly older OS on machines that ship with newer. Many of my users aren't ready for 10.5 either and it would be nice to know if their newer machines COULD run 10.4.11.
Is there any hardware or utility that would tell me this information?
Thanks,
Remo...

In general Tiger will run on any Mac prior to November 2007, and perhaps a few newer ones, but not the very latest versions with a Gesture Touchpad and other new features. The drivers are simply not there.
The Macs that were shipped last year with Tiger and a Leopard update DVD, naturally will run Tiger, but any machine that actually shipped with Leopard preinstalled is questionable about "downgrading" as you will see from browsing posts in the board.
If you get a machine with Leopard preinstalled, I suggest letting those who are ready for a new experience use those.
In truth, while Leopard has many new features, etc., it is not much different from the user viewpoint as Tiger was. Some things are a bit different, some things like Sherlock and Classic support are gone, but overall, unless you actually start looking for the new 300 features, it's still just a Mac.
I actually think Leopard is easier to use than Tiger.

  • What permissions does a user require in order to call addProcessTaskInstanc

I have a utility in our OIM admin webapp where the user can login and request a change to their password in a particular resource. This utility needs to call tcProvisioningOperationsIntf.addProcessTaskInstance(long plTaskKey, long plOrcKey) I get an error back stating the logged in user does not have permission to perform this operation. This utility worked fine in 9.0.3.2 but it doesn't work in 9.1.0.2 BP11. I've granted "All Users" admin access on just about everything I can update and it still fails. Any help please?

  • What OS does photoshop cloud require

    From Adobe Photoshop Cloud,
"You are running an operating system that Photoshop no longer supports. Refer to the systems requirements for a full list of supported platform."
    No link has been provided.
I've used my Mac Air for a few years without updating the OS. How should I go about this so my Mac doesn't crash once I do an update?
And why is Adobe being a pain? No link? Won't allow Photoshop to be installed via cloud? I'm not an OS geek so this seems unnecessarily painful.
    Thanks

  • What 'Ram' does my Mac Pro need?

    Hi gang,
What type Ram (the actual code\serial name) would go into the specs below? I have a friend who has just returned twice to the dealer because the Ram the dealer installed was incorrect. I'd like to get it right the first time. Any help would be most appreciated.

Also, the way memory is configured seems to not always be understood; sometimes two brands don't get along. And deal with someone that sells a lot of memory to Mac market and knows the Mac Pro.
Crucial is popular top-tier w/o paying Apple price, TechWorks, OWC, TransIntl, Kingston....
Micron/Crucial, Hynix, etc, but there are a limited number of companies that really make memory and the rest are resellers.

  • What displays does the mac mini work with?

and what kind of plug do they work with I'm getting one off of ebay a 8GB model from 07

Any good common brand should work fine. Pick something that is 1080p that suits your budget and is of a suitable size for the room.
Note that currently there is a graphics driver issue with the HDMI output as well as the mini displayport to VGA adapter, so when you connect a TV via either, you may have glitches on screen or just a black screen. Reportedly Apple is working on fixing that.
PS: The TVs are LCD TVs with LED backlighting or LED edge lighting.

  • What else does my Mac need and how do I configure it?

Just installed Premiere CS4 on my Mac – 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory and 1TB hard disk. I want to edit files shot on a JVC GY-HM100 camcorder.
Will the addition of USB 2.0 external hard drives help me to handle HD video? How should they be arranged and accessed by Premiere files and processes? Is it a good idea to add more RAM, say another 4GB?
Sorry if this is a bit basic. It's all very new, but exciting!

    Hi Harm
Sadly, this machine wasn't built for this kind of use.
It's not a professional production machine but it's less than a year old.
My work is mostly short web-based features, so I hope to get more use from the iMac until my longer, HD projects start rolling in.
I'll try the Firewire 800 option. How would you spread the tasks across the internal drive, the Firewire 800 external and a 500GB USB 2.0 storage/back-up device?

  • What performance does Lightroom 5 require?

I would like to buy a MacBookPro 13" with retina, but you can't get it with more than 8GB of RAM.
Isn't it relevant because the processor is the important factor?
So the fastest processor 3.0GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7 combined with 8GB will work fine?
E.g. the 1:1 views will be shown fast?
    Thanks for replies!

    Lotsa people.
Bottom line: any new computer will run Lr5 fine, usually. If it doesn't, it's usually due to some system anomaly, and not a spec.
8GB is plenty, unless your planning on running other ram-hungry apps at the same time.

  • HT201897 Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter for operation in Europe or should I only purchase a different power cord for it?

Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter to operate outside of the USA or can I simply purchase a different power cord for it?

Depending on which European country (should their mains access plug/port shape vary) the
cord set with correct ends on it has to match. You can buy a cord that plugs into the Mini
where the factory cord goes, and the other end has one for the wall source shape. The wire
for the application should be able to support 110~240VAC.
With the cord or an accurate image in hand, you could either get a new cable to match both
realities (mini + wall supply mains local) or an adapter (US/Standard to EU/Local) for just
the head or input part of the original Apple cable. One plugs into the other, then into wall.
If you have a new Mini with a small modular plug/port on the computer end of the power wire,
it would have only two holes and no ground; the other end would have two prongs of equal
shape and size. Not a polarized plug and not a grounded three-prong. To get a replacement
power wire for the MINI to go from power source to the Mini is recommended, if you are going
to be staying in one location for awhile. A Travel Kit that offers no electrical conversion but only
the physical shape adapter kit, should a available in travel stores, airports; big box discount
stores, computer and electronic stores. This page shows the cord end of the appliance shapes.
The other end would be the mains shape for whichever country you are going to....
    http://www.signalandpower.com/European-Power-Cords/
So to match the country or regional power mains type is a primary concern for obtaining the
correct replacement cord to supply the Mini with local mains power. The end which plugs into
the Mini is of a certain type (numbers for EU and elsewhere are published, see link + images)
& the end that gets plugged into the mains or utility side, needs to match the local specification.
The link to Apple, to contact for Support and Service information in prior post, should be able
to help find a source for the local replacement type cord they'd sell local people with a Mini.
Apple local sources offer replacements for this purpose; and for travelers, a second cord for
a direct use (not adapter plugs) is a better bet. For those who only need a cord in two places.
If you are traveling to Denmark, UK, Swiss or other EU countries require different adapters.
Even places where the power itself may be somewhat similar. However your MINI has an
automatic power supply that will conform to that energy standard, you only need to supply a
correct non-transforming adapter. Simply a connection to adapt one shape to another.
The general purpose travel kit that is not specialized to Apple power adapters, would have a
plastic plug/adapter with the local pins on one side, and the US/standard two slots on the other.
So, no circuitry nor any other change of electrical power inside this device would be required.
    http://www.signalandpower.com/2-Prong-Plug-Adapters/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Convert-to-Europe-CEE-716-plug/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Swiss-AC-Power-Cords/
In other words, I believe my other post already covered this. On the ground on either end of the
path, adapters are common and the Mini does not use proprietary electrical components IF you
have one of the more recent shape aluminum models with the power supply built in. The older
Mini has the power brick and two wires. A US/Standard plug adapter to EU/Local would work in
either case, since all you'd do is plug the adapter plug into the local mains and the US plug into
that one... I see these kinds of discards for as little as 25¢ in thrift stores in Alaska. Or you can
buy a new one. Or you could get a complete cord with correct ends on it, for Mini + local mains.
Hopefully this helps somewhat. The only info missing is which EU country or region is involved.
Their shapes of plug are different, so the adapter end for local supply has to match their standard.
Swiss, Denmark, UK, and others offer different shapes and so on.
The Apple store in the location you are traveling should be able to supply you with a replacement
cable for a modern MINI, that has the correct local mains end, and the correct Apple mini end on
the opposite. Since the unit is automatically switching, the magic is done.
Since I supplied a means to locate any number of Apple stores, authorized service providers &
other Apple related vendors in my earlier reply: https://locate.apple.com/country you could contact
any of them along your route in the City in whichever EU country, to find a local MINI power cable.
    In any event, I'm done...
    Good luck and happy trails...

  • Does my Mac 10.9.5 have a built in compression system to unzip files?  If not what utility is best?

Does my Mac 10.9.5 have a built in compression system to unzip files?  If not what utility is best?

It does. Select any file you want to compress. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on it and select Compress ... from the context menu. To decompress simply double-click on the compressed file to open it. If you have any problems then get The Unarchiver 3.9.1 for decompressing. Use The Archive Browser 1.9.1 to do both.

  • What os does lightroom and photoshop run best on?  Mac or PC?

What os does lightroom and photoshop run best on?  Mac or PC?

I don't know to which project files you are referring but:
The Lightroom Catalog (a single file on both)
The Previews (a single folder on both)
The Smart Previews (a single folder on both)
Presets, Settings and Such (in identically nested folders within the OS construct on both)
Take it from an experienced user in both OS's. Mac simplifies somethings - PC simplifies others.

In Mac's PAINTR application, what exactly does the "Splash" function do?  It isn't mentioned in the Toolbox Documentation, but the "Splash" option is given right next to the "Draw" option at the top of the screen in the application itself.

  • What is Listener.bundle?  Why does my Mac keep asking to load it?

What is listener.bundle?  Why does my Mac keep asking to load it?

Hi, Sk8erStan. I don't exactly know how/what your (or my) listener.bundle works/does, but for me, this became an issue when I downloaded the network scanning software "driver" for my Lexmark printer. Apparently this lets the Mac receive a request over wi-fi from the networked printer to set up, receive, and save a scan datafile. Essentially it lets the printer control the Mac. Which is OK and worked fine in my case .. EXCEPT every 5 or 10 minutes I get a pop-up alert asking me if I want to DENY or ALLOW my "listener bundle" app .. from listening. Really irritating and I have not yet figured out how to turn that off. If you have solved your problem, please post your solution and what you learned. Thanks.
