There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I’ve looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):
1. I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
2. About moving the home folder: I saw some posts about moving the whole home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected fodlers withing the home folder tomake the best use of the SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document /music/iphoto/download) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website:

3. I would like to get 8 more RAM when I can afford it
4. I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage

a. Should I partition my internal 1 TB hard drive and use the first partition as a scratch disc for photoshop and other applications? How much should I partition? Is there any benefit to this if the rive is partitioned?
b. Should I use an external drive as a scratch disc?
c. Any advice on a good 1-2 TB external drive?
d. Should I just leave things in factory settings?
Don't assume I know the basics - I got all the above just by searching around. Any advice and commentary is appreciatedThanks.

I wonder if putting the scratch disc on the same drive as the OS would cause them to interfere with each other? Even if they are on different partitions, they would not be able to be accessed at the same time, or could they? That's why I was wondering if I should place scratch disc on the internal HDD -- but then I don't know how much to partition for it (or to partition at all?)
ALso, I read on a few places that too much read/write on the SSD wears it down over time? Is this more of a theoretical concerns - it does not make sense to me since it has no moving parts!

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.

TROJANS and RE-DIRECTION TO FAKE WEBSITES
The appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.

HOW TO AVOID RE-DIRECTION
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of added security as well as speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:

Peer-to-peer sharing applications and download torrents (such as the now defunct LimeWire) supplying pirated software, movies etc are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. What to use on Imac with I3 core? Bootcamp, Parrells, VMware, other

Hi, I just purchased a 21.5" Imac with I3 core. I believe I will need to run Windows xp( ( I have this disk) or Windows 7 for an program that runs in excel. I need to run an excel program (file) for work that was programed on a windows laptop and I do not think it will work on Mac version of Excel as the programer said he does not think it will work. So, I need to install MS Excel on my new Imac. What program should I use? Should I use BootCamp? Parrells?, VMware or another program that will run MSOS on a Mac? I do beleive I need to run windows 7 as I have had some issues with the latest version of this excel file work on my dell laptop running xp. The programer said he designed the latest version of his excel program (file) to run with Windows 7.

For just this one purpose BootCamp would be overkill.
Plus you would have the hassle of having to reboot your Mac each time you want to use Windows.
A Virtualization app like Parallels or VMWare Fusion would be the better solution since you can run Windows with them alongside OSX.
Personally I would start with the free VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ .
No need to shell out money if not needed

Lead time for iMac with SSD?

Has anyone ordered/received a 27" iMac with SSD? When I configure that machine on the apple store website, the estimated shipping changes from less than one week to 4-6 weeks.
However, if I configure the same machine on MacMall their estimated shipping time changes from same day to 5-7 days. I'd prefer to order directly from Apple as we get a (small) corporate discount, but a 4-6 week lead time is pretty rough to swallow.
A phone call to the Apple Store indicates they are having difficulty sourcing the SSD's.
Has anyone had any recent experience trying to order this config?

In reality, a typical USB connected disk is roughly equal to or lesser than the throughput of a shared drive attached over a Gigabit Ethernet network.

Graphics Firmware update for iMac with with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 or 7600 GT

I am one of the many with an 06 24" iMac that has the graphics card glitch. Downloaded and installed this firmware update today and worked all day with no issues. The update says it is for users that are running Windows 7 in boot camp.
Is this coincidental and the firmware fixed the issue so many of us have with these iMacs with the NVIDIA cards or did I just jinx myself and my problems are bound to return?

I've seen all sorts graphics problems mentioned. Apple sells millions of Macs per years, so any potential problem is bound to happen to at least a few customers. Assuming that people can read your mind is not a very good way to get responses.
On the other hand, if you describe the problem in detail, people reading the forum and looking for solutions may actually find your post through a keywords search, and your finding about installing the firmware update for Windows 7 may help then too, after confirming their problem is similar to your problem.
But that's up to you...

Hard Drive for Time Machine for iMac with AirPort Extreme??

I just switched back to Mac after too many years with a PC. I bought an iMac 24" 2.8GHz with 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM and 750GB Serial ATA Drive.
I'm planning on adding an external hard drive for Time Machine to attach to my AirPort Extreme. From reading information posted on the Apple site and my AEBS I understand that it needs to be connected to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
While I may be opening up a technological "can of worms," I'd like to know what will be the most dependable drive 1TB, USB 2.0 that I can buy. Noise and bright lights are not a consideration here. I just want a drive that I can depend on to work with Time Machine. The "original" data will be stored elsewhere. I've heard of, read about and experienced so many hard drive failures that I'm getting "gun shy" about this subject. Please feel free to let me know what's good and bad. Thanks.

Im new here. Just got my IMac 24" 2.8ghz 10.5.1 Leopard last week. I love everything about it but Im having a real hard time finding an audio interface to use with Garageband. I tried the M-Audio Firewire Solo...found out quick it is not compatible. So I figure what the ** i'll downgrade and go with the M-Audio Mobilepre USB audio interface...usb, no fuss no muss right...WRONG! It doesnt work either! I tried downloading the most current driver from M-audio's website but still no go. I guess Leopard and intel machines are hard to please. Also the audio interface has to have phantom power to run a condensor mic. So my questions to you guys is this:
1. Are there any other audio interface options out there with phantom power for $200 or less that will run with my Imac ?
2. If not, why in the ** would Apple design a machine with Garageband then not set it up to accept any reasonably priced audio interface currently on the market? Tell me Im just uninformed...say it isnt so!
Sorry if it sounds like Im aggravated...I am! I had hoped to get some recording time in this weekend but its looking doubtful now.

reports of flakey operation with iMac firewire drivers.
I like the Fast Track Pro, but I'm not sure it would
be my first choice if I had it to do over. It's main
drawback is that it's USB 1.1 -- so, there are some
tradeoffs in the number of simultaneous I/O channels
versus data rate and resolution.

Simple CD Rom for iMac with Dead one

Is there a simple CD Rom that I can plug externally into my iMac DV+ 450? Few are on the market I know. So if I go with a CD burner or even DVD burner, what are the chances that a model will work with my Mac running system 9 even if the box doesn't say so.
Just trying to get another little while out of otherwise smooth running iMac(s) here at a school while the CD Rom drives begin to break down.

For an external optical drive, you'd want to get one that goes through the Firewire port, since the USB 1.1 ports on G3 iMacs are very slow. If you find an external drive with Firewire, it will probably work with Macs because most of the computers out there with Firewire are Macs. I'd still check the specs to ensure they work. Whether they will work with Mac OS 9, that's another separate question.
Also, shopping at a Mac specialist vendor (such as OWC www.macsales.com) will probably increase your odds of finding a compatible product.

   A nephew stayed with us to take a course at the local community college last semester. I allowed him use of my mac for research just after I installed Mountain Lion. He decided to "help out" and ran a 3rd party clean and tune up app., Magician. The tune up wiped over 1200 titles of my music in iTunes, also a path of folders with names containing nothing but more empty folders with names. Almost every program I open and run for a short time crashes, also folders and programs are in wrong places, or cannot be located (the nephew, for instance). Up to this time I have always been able to track a problem far enough to resolve it by careful persistence and good luck, but I do not have the tech savvy to solve this one without getting in deeper. I have run disk utility saveral times and always get variations of this:
ACL found but not expected on
"private/etc/resolve.conf"
"private/etc/raddb/sites-enabled/inner-tunnel"
"private/etc/rabbd/sites-enabled/control-socket"
     Also, after four years of intense daily use it is cluttered with much junk, and every app that I was curious about, and I am a very curious guy.
   So I know my limits, (and now my nephew). I dumped my pc for a Strawberry iMac a few years ago, and so far every problem I've encountered, or brought on myself, the Mac has resolved with its own inner elegance - in spite of my novice bungels - and now I honestly feel ashamed, in addition to the need to apologize to a machine for allowing a peasant into the Royal Grounds - so I am calling the Wise Ones in for this one.
   Crazy, I know, but to me a Mac represents something far beyond the ordinary input ➛ process ➛ output title/function customarily assigned to a machine - I sense an odd kind of morality involved, one that I need to respect.
    So, these are my reasons for wanting to do a clean install, correctly.
