What os x upgrade is feasible for my macbookpro8,3?

i have a 17" late-2011 macbook pro running 10.7.5.  i would like to upgrade to a more recent os.
what is feasible for my mbp?  i read the yosemite page and my mbp seems to qualify, but i have read about people having trouble upgrades.
i have 4 gb 1333 mhz ddr3.
so i am wondering:
-what os x is the mbp capabile of?
-what upgrades will i have to make to use yosemite?  i have 4 gb of ram.
-what is the useful life of my mbp?  the cycle count of my battery is 169.
-is it worth the expense/effort?
i am considering the macbook pro upgrade because i will be adding ram to my imac and upgrading to yosemite.  i have a a new iphone using ios 8.  i would like all my devices to be as current as possible to synch, share, make use of available functionality.
thank you for your time and advice.

According to the specs for your model listed in MacTracker database, you could upgrade
the RAM to as much as 16GB, with quality RAM from reputable sources... See noted
Firmware update linked below, before attempting to upgrade the RAM memory chips.
Maximum Memory    16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

More than 4GB is recommended, even before Yosemite; though some suggest 4GB is
enough. But not usually if you actually run applications that put demands on the OS X
and the limited resources that worked fine in an older OS X version don't do that well
in a later OS X system. Upgrade the computer before you upgrade the OS X.
The computer you have can be upgraded in OS X to Yosemite 10.10.2, there was a
firmware update listed for it, but that may not be currently available; but yours is:
Here's the link for EFI Firmware Update 2.7 for MacBook Pro:
•MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.7
The computer could use an SSD upgrade or a 7200-RPM hard disk drive. Be sure
to match the physical size of the replacement drive because there are two sizes
of 2.5-inch drive, one is thicker than the other. You could look into OWC macsales
online to see what is available in the range of your expectation. Read closely.
For reference: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/powerbook-ibook-macbook/
Given the 17-inch portable has not been re-introduced to the product line and there
is no way to tell if one ever will be again, you could choose to go with it, or perhaps
look for a newer model. If you like to upgrade components, check the Late 2012
13-inch MacBook Pro with the optical drive and non-retina display. It seems OK.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • What do the upgrade scripts do for the following cases?

    Hi,
I have got the compare reports between 9.0 vanilla(Source) and 8.4 copy of production(Target).
    it has the following properties.
    source---------target--------action-----upgrade
    changed-----*changed-------copy-------yes
    changed-----*unchanged----copy-------yes
    unchanged---*changed------copy--------yes
    unchanged----*unchanged--copy--------yes
which means in all the above cases the customizations will be overridden.
I have read somewhere that as a developer i need to look for the following case and re-apply the customizations
    source---------target--------action-----upgrade
    changed-----*changed-------copy-------yes
my question is that, when we run the 9.0 upgrade scripts on 8.4 copy of production, will it not override the customizations for the following cases?
    source---------target--------action-----upgrade
    unchanged---*changed------copy--------yes
    unchanged----*unchanged--copy--------yes
    Please help me,
    Thank you.

If you are talking about compare reports during Initial move of Upgrade --Yes , objects from the source will come over and based on user's or you(in this case) have to re-apply them back.At later stages of the upgrade pass  you have to re-apply them eventually if you want to opt with old or delivered custom or pure custom psoft objects.

Install more RAM in the computer; the Mac needs to have at least 2GB of RAM and should have 4GB or more first.

    Hello Pushtheriver,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning iCloud storage issues:
    Get help using iCloud storage
    This may also help:
    Understanding iOS device capacity
You can sync and download many different types of content on your device. Some types of content (such as music and videos) typically take more space than others (such as notes and books). The amount of space taken by an app depends on the app's purpose; complex or graphically intense apps usually take more space than simpler apps.
If your device is near its capacity, you can remove some of the less used content to make room for more.

  • IPhoto won't start after upgrade 1.1 for my new iMac. Now what do I do?

Had to upgrade according to screen.  iPhoto won't start after upgrade 1.1 for my new iMac. Now what do I do?
I have restarted the computer. Brand new iMac intel. v 10.9.4

You need to upgrade iPhoto for Mavericks. Download the upgrade using App Store.

  • What does this mean "We apologize for the inconvenience, but the ability to order books and prints is no longer supported in iPhoto 5. Please upgrade to a newer version of iPhoto to order these products.

what does this mean "We apologize for the inconvenience, but the ability to order books and prints is no longer supported in iPhoto 5. Please upgrade to a newer version of iPhoto to order these products." I want to buy a photo book and that message keeps popping up.

TD, LN - You guys make great points and I will take you at your word. Normally, I would not hesitate to update. I have a lot at stake here with a large vacation coming up with a great many new pictures anticipated. I don't know enough to understand what is meant by "verifying my library." Please give me some insight there and I will start the upgrade process tonight! Seriously, I have wanted to do this for some time, but have been scared away by reading too many situations on these forums.
TD - you have a good sense of humor. I know all versions eventually need to be left to die away. Support is not eternal. I am sure I missed the announcement that certain versions of iPhoto would no longer offer the ability to conveniently make cards, calendars, books, etc. Like the original poster, I was surprised to learn my version did not offer that functionality only by requesting it and getting denied. Sort of frosted me at the time, as you can tell by my original reply here.
If anyone can help me with the "verifying" question, I'll get off of here and let the original poster have his thread back!

  • MacBook Pro 2011 with OS X 10.6.8. what should I upgrade to, for now?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8. and I'm unsure about upgrading, but feel the need to. What should I upgrade to, for now? THANK YOU!

Keep your Snow Leopard installation and test Mavericks on a separate partition or external drive. You will probably want to have both options. Mavericks and anything else after Snow Leopard has changes to the user interface that many of us find pointless and irritating. And you won't be able to use any software that runs via Rosetta in Snow Leopard. You will have to upgrade software that needs Rosetta to a later version, or get something else entirely.

  • What kind of upgrades are my iMac model eligible for?

Hi, I have the same problem and was wondering if someone could walk me through what I need to do to find out what kind of upgrades the iMac model I have is eligible for?
    <Re-Titled By Host>

The model identifier info provided shows what may be a 20-inch or 24-inch, as iMac7.1
These may see an upgrade in RAM so as to facilitate running a system software upgrade:
Maximum Memory   6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Until some time ago there had been a Firmware Update:  iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3
however, now the link previously available, appears to no longer function.
According to http://mactracker.ca database application, your general iMac7.1 series is
able to run as new a system as Yosemite 10.10; however some users had found that to
be a bit far of a reach for this old a model due to hardware limits of the vintage. If not
already running at least Snow Leopard 10.6.8, you could get & try Mountain Lion 10.8.5
(buy $19. upgrade code, from Apple; that would unlock Mac app download) as Mavericks
10.9.5 is no longer available as an upgrade to older systems. The theory is that if a Mac
could use Mavericks, it should be able to accommodate Yosemite. But, not always.
Some people liked Snow Leopard 10.6.8 - and it is on retail DVD for easy offline restore
or bootable utilities on the same disc - still available from Apple $19. It should run fine
unless you have some need to upgrade further. This system is needed to go to App Store
and other aspects of the newer OS X available from the internet only.
The site http://everymac.com has a fair database of most things Mac, so that in addition
to the download MacTracker app, are good references and hardware example data.
    Hopefully this helped some.
    Good luck & happy computing!

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • What is the best upgrade hard drive for a A1342?

What is the best upgrade hard drive for an A1342 (white macbook)?

Absolutely. I put a Samsung 840 in my early 2009 white macbook and it is the best computer upgrade I've ever done. I've also put an OWC SSD in my late 2009 iMac and highly recommend their drives. http://eshop.macsales.com

  • HEY APPLE! What are upgrade policy plans for new systems shipping with 10.4

I just ordered a brand new Xserver, thinking that there would be some policy in place for brand new computers shipping with 10.4, to get the new version of OSX Leopard Server (without having to buy a retail copy) - however to my surprise, there is nothing currently in place.
Will there be an upgrade policy soon for users who have just ordered new computers, currently shipping with 10.4??? Or should we return recently ordered items, and stop ordering new systems until they start shipping with 10.5?

Assumptions such as this one are often a recipe for disappointment and/or for extra expenses; I've certainly learned to be cautious with these.
In this case, there is a policy that has been in place (AFAIK) since the Leopard announcement.
For details on and requirements of the Leopard upgrade policy, do read the [Mac OS X Up To Date|http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate> web site.
Those folks outside the Leopard upgrade window that are upgrading to Leopard (and that don't have a separately-purchased Right-to-Upgrade) will be purchasing and ordering the upgrade. You may end up purchasing an iLife upgrade, too — if you're using it, and not already at the current release — as Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server upgrades apparently do not include an iLife upgrade.

  • What power supply do I need for a dead AGP G4 with upgraded processor

I recently upgraded my 400Mhz G4 to a dual 500Mhz board and a bigger, faster HD. I also replaced the internal battery but now the Mac... she is dead. No power, no lights, no nothing.
Will I need an upgraded power supply for the new board, or is it just old and time for a replacement power supply.
I found this on Ebay... will it work?
"This 237W Astec power supply (Apple part# 614-0108) is a clean, working pull from a revision 2 Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth series computer (e.g. 350/400/450/500 MHz single processor) and will also work perfectly in previous models as well. "
    Thanks!
    AGP G4, Dual 500, 768Mb RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi,
The AGP Sawtooth Mac can be switched to an ATX PSU. Later models (Gigabit G4, Digital Audio, Quicksilver and later) have a different power supply and motherboard that passes 28 Volts DC from the power supply to a connector for the ADC port graphics card. (28 VDC is passed to the Graphics card ADC port to power Apple's ADC monitors, introduced in Summer 2000 MWNY.) A standard PC ATX Power Supply does not have 28V DC and will not be pin compatible with the Gigabit G4 and later G4 systems.
