What performance, using external Thunderbolt bootable hd with Lion, final cut protools

is realistic install or clone my internal hard drive with the OS and all pro apps i use daily on an external thunderbolt drive and to use that drive to boot with and work on any other mac in the world (thunderbolt of course).

Well first off, you may run into difficulty because many Thunderbolt Macs are not Snow Leopard compatible.  I'm not even sure how compatible Thunderbolt is with Snow Leopard when it comes to external drives.  You posted to the Snow Leopard forum, so that's an issue to consider.  Secondly some system specific drivers in 10.6 may not work across all the possible Macs you might be able to connect to.  You are better off just sharing the data files with other Macs.    To learn about which Macs are Snow Leopard compatible, see the bottom of:

What's wrong with my Final Cut Pro 7.03?
I have just started up a new project.
Every time I try to ad a clip in top of each other a "general error" shows up. The sequence viewer turned red and it displays that I have to close and reopen the window to restore.
The only "new thing" I do - is the use/brand of camera.
Now I use the canon D5 mark 3 for my project (before D5 mark 2)
What's wrong??? Do I need to update my Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 And how do I do this???
Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Did you use Log & Import?  Or did you at least convert the D5 files before importing?  FCP doesn't work with those files natively.

''Problem:'' For whatever reason, NoScript is stopping Runescape Community Toolbar from working properly which freezes your first Firefox window.
''Fix:'' Uninstall the toolbar. Disable NoScript. Install the toolbar. Add your RS account to it and make sure it works, then Enable NoScript again.
EDIT: Posted a fix earlier that was wrong. Corrected to the right one, sorry ^_^ Answer was on Runescape Forums.

Has anyone successfully used the Intuit Quicken compatible with Lion upgrade for investment tracking?

Although I gave up investment tracking for personal reasons (I had used Quicken Deluxe 2002 for many years for that reason), my understanding is that the new Quicken 2007 for Lion/Mt. Lion is completely the same feature wise as Quicken 2007 for PPC.  It will run on Snow Leopard, too.
For $15, why not download it and just try it and LET US KNOW!

  • Problem with my Final Cut express HD's livetype & soundtrack programs

Hi everyone, hope someone could help me
In 2006 i but my Final cut Express HD for my laptop Macbook. I have used a lot, it always worked.
I haven't used it this year and the only new thing a did to my laptop was installed the snowleopard software is now 10.6.8. But yesterday, i try to save a project in my LIVETYPE and SOUNDTRACK (programs that come with the Final Cut Express HD) it automatically close up deleting everything and appear a window saying: that quit unexpectedly and push reopen and repeat the error over and over again.
the program (Livetype and Soundtrack) opens and are install perfectcly but it doesn't let you save or export anything it automatically close it up.
Final cut is the only one that let you save projects.
I have install and uninstall it many time and it still doesn't work.
I will like to know what happens? and how can i fix it?!
    Thank you so much
    best regards

This is what appears in my screen:

  • Will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

    Thanks Tom.
So I will need  upgrade to FCP 7 first, then convert to an XML file in 6.0.6, then convert to another file that FCP X can read? I have a lot of half done projects that need finishing. Is this process very complex and time consuming?
Maybe I should be approaching this from a different angle. The reason I am asking is that I now need to upgrade to a new Mac book pro and have been told that I cant run final cut pro 6.0.6 on the new models using maverick. Is this true?

  • What External Hard Drives Work With Lion?

Have installed Lion in my iMac. Need a new external backup hard drive. Understand some hard drives aren't compatible with Lion.  If this is so, can someone recommend an external that is?  The G Drives Mobile works with my Macbook Pro with Lion as OS, but I'm concerned about the iMac.
    Thank you for any response

I've been using a LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface 250GB since July 2005 (= 6 years) and it still hasn't let me down....yet...
I only use it a couple of times a week, sometimes once or twice a day, to make complete bootable clones of my HD. For the rest of the time it's disconnected.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make the clones. Mike Bombich, who owns CCC and has an excellent website, advises not to use Western Digital drives.
As I understand it, this is  because WD drives have something in the software that isn't compatible with the Mac OS.
I've never heard of there being any particular problems with any other make of external drive.

  • Will files be damaged when I accidentally disconnect an external Thunderbolt HD? With early Firewire this could fatally corrupt a HD.

Back in the day I had a few instances where a Firewire 400 cable was disconnected by accident. Even though no files were transferred at the time (exept perhaps as part of invisible background operations) this corrupted files, entire folders or even made the drive itself unreadable.
With Thunderbolt, do I have to fear similar disasters? I use two external Thunderbolt drives because I'm down to a single Macbook Pro and need the external space.
Or are there new protocols in place that prevent such calamity with Thunderbolt? (An aside: Thunderbolt doesn't even show up in the tagging categories (unlike bluetooth or Firewire). It's been around years and despite superior specs has few products and little market penetration.)

NOTE: for anyone who may come across this thread and has had the same problem, Apple fixed the problem today with their release of OS 10.8.2, so Apple was at fault after all.
But if you are interested in the Seagate Thunderbolt 3TB drive, I would highly recommend it to anyone, as it is awesomely fast and after almost four months of use, seems to be very reliable so far.

  • What to use as rear surrounds speakers with a pair of Gigaworks T20s (as fronts)..

Im looking at buying a Creative Labs Soundblaster X-FI XTREME MUSIC Soundcard and a set of Cardsome Gigaworks T20s for MP3s (I like my music!) and gaming...
What I dont know is what to use as my rear surrounds for gaming (for real 5.1 music sound Id use my stereo system downstairs!)
A pair of the cheaper Inspire 280s? Or will this combo sound crap by mixing the two..!?
(and thats chewing up alot of desk space with speakers..!)
    Any suggestions appreciated folks..!?

    secretsam007,
If you're really into gaming and looking for a 5.1 setup, I would suggest getting a proper 5.1 speaker system rather than hooking 2 pair of stereo speakers.

  • How do I make a bootable clone (with Lion already installed on my Mac)?

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help clarify with a step-by-step on this.  Here's the deal: I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, which I updated from Snow Leopard to Lion via the App Store.  I have decided to upgrade my internal hard drive (which I've done before) from a 500GB to 750GB, but after doing a couple hours of research, the whole Lion element is making me nervous.
I've been reading about the whole Lion Recovery partition, which won't be brought over with a simple cloning process (via SuperDuper! or the like) and I'm now thoroughly confused with how to do this the proper way.  I don't know if I need to use the Recovery Disk Assistant app on the new 750GB hard drive, or on a separate (third) drive, or to make a bootable Lion install disk on either, or even if I do do these things, how this meshes on the new drive, and do I need to format the new drive with two partitions for the Recovery partition to be a part of it?... Oy.
I'd really be appreciative if someone with the know-how of this process could help with the steps.  It doesn't need to be crazy thorough--as I said, I've at least replaced my drive before--but I'm not an expert by any stretch (as a point of reference: bring up Terminal and my eyes will roll back in my head).  I just need to know what to do in what order, with at least a little detail.  And if it means anything to you, I'm the type of guy who likes to know WHY I'm doing something, if possible...  Thanks in advance for your time and help.
(I've already got the new 750GB drive in hand, an external enclosure and a separate 8GB+ drive, too.)

You can use 3rd party software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to create a bootable clone on an external drive.
I use SuperDuper to create a clone. Yes, it's true the Recovery HD will need to be recreated after restoring a clone because neither of these softwares nor Time Machine backup that partition. It's really no big deal. You just reinstall Lion on top of itself after the restore and reapply any Software Updates including the 10.7.1 update. I've done this a few times with no issues.
The Lion Recovery Assistant app creates an external Recovery HD on like a USB thumb drive, but it creates this using the Recovery HD from your Lion install. If the Recovery HD is missing, the app will not create one for you.
    EDITED:
Create your bootable clone on an external drive.
Create an external USB thumb drive with the Recovery HD using the Lion Recovery Assistant.
    Swap out hard drives.
Boot from the USB Recovery HD thumb drive.
Use Disk Utilities to create a new partition (Macintosh HD), format it with the GUID partition table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
While in Disk Utilities, click your hard drive (not the new partition); then click the Restore button.
The Source of your restore is the external clone you created. The Destination is the newly created Macintosh HD partition.
Click the Restore button. The restore will take awhile depending on the size of the clone.
After the restore, boot your system and it should boot into Lion.
Reinstall Lion on top of itself to recreate the Recovery HD at the end of your Lion partition.
Reapply Software Updates including the 10.7.1 update (if you want it).
    Hope this helps!

  • Using a Nikon CoolScan 5000 with Lion

I have been using my Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED with Snow Leopard without problems, using SilverFast 6.
Since SilverFast upgraded to version 8, and I upgraded to Lion, I couldn't use the multislide scanner SF210. Now silverfast have produced a Beta version they say will work with Lion, but I can't see the scanner in my SilverFast window.
I have tried to find it in the Preferences "Print and Scan" window, but it doesn't show , although it is listed in my "About this Mac" window, connected to a high speed US bus.
Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrongly?

For scanning?  Does Nikon provide any scanning software?
Image Capture can be used for scanning.  The commercial VueScan will probably work.  You can go to their website and check to see if your scanner is compatible.
