What Photoshop software to use?

Hi,
I am thinking about buying Photoshop software but am not sure what exact software I need. I am an amateur photographer looking into adjusting old pictures from long ago. So I want to use a picture taken in 1980 that has me in it as a little boy. I want to adjust this picture so I can reuse the background of that original picture but I want to change the foreground, so to enter me as a 42 year old man inspite of me in the original picture as an 8 year old boy. What software best to use for this? Or will any Photoshop software do?
Can someone help me out? Thanks in advance!
Gr., Stijn

I would suggest downloading a free trial of Photoshop Elements 13. It's very affordable and very user-friendly and thus would be a great way for you to get started with Photoshop.
Of course, you can also download a free trial of Photoshop CC if you think you might eventually want to take advantage of the full power of Photoshop, but for a beginner wanting to do the kind of thing you described, Photoshop Elements will help walk you through your project knowing that you are not a professional who knows how to dig deep into the program. It will make life easier for you.

Photoshop CS6 should work, as for which is the oldest version that would work on that OS version you may want to do a Forum/web search.

  • Does anyone know what OSx software is used in this Photo booth installation

Now I have watched this video and I can see it is using a capture program and then some other program is doing a slideshow.
So let's see if we can name the software.
    Go to the site
    http://www.markvans.com/
click on the digital photobooth link at the bottom left.
watch the film at the 54 sec point they show the software for a second pause it as look.
What two pieces of software are they using.

    I googled
"Unable to find file floatui.htm in the Configuration/Floaters directory"
and posted the first Adobe forums link which popped up.

  • What equipment/software to use for HD movies

So, I am a bit interested in switching over to creating High-Definition movies. I guess the first thing to do is to buy an HD camera. I am assuming that iMovie 6 allows for capturing HD video since it has "HD" in the software title. Now, once I have created it, can it be exported to iDVD and I can make a high-definition DVD? Do I need a different piece of software? And, I am guessing a normal DVD burner that comes with my Mac does not create HD DVDs?

    < aside: Congratulations, four-blob Karsten! >
"..Looks like the HD function is pretty useless at the moment since you can only send it back to an HD camera. Who wants to do that?.."
That's pretty useful if the HD camcorder has a hi-quality 'component' output - most do - and your HD TV has a 'component' input: you get to show your edited HD movie in very high quality on any suitably-equipped HD TV ..gorgeous! You can carry the camcorder to anyone's house and show your HD movie there on their HD TV. No need to worry whether they've got an HD-DVD player (..they probably haven't).
Having edited your HD movie in iMovie HD, if you had Apple's "DVD Studio Pro" program, you could burn an HD DVD (..yup, even with an ordinary non-HD 'SuperDrive' built into almost any current Mac..) using an ordinary non-HD DVD, and you can play that normal disc on almost any other Mac (..which has suitably up-to-date QuickTime on it). Those hi-def ordinary DVDs will NOT play, however, on a normal, household, standalone DVD player. But they do play at hi-def in the "DVD Player" program on a Mac.
So all that's missing to create a 'proper' hi-def DVD (..which will play on any standalone HD or Blu-Ray hi-def player - pretty much none of which are in the shops yet, anyway..) is a tweak to iDVD, and an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray burner - pretty much none of which are in the shops yet, either!
So with iMovie HD you're way ahead of the crowd: you can edit an HD movie, ready for when you buy a hi-def burner (..Christmas?..) and when iDVD is tweaked (..January?..) to burn hi-def discs.
You can already edit and copy back to tape an HD movie - using iMHD - to take your edited movie anywhere and to show it on any 'component'-equipped HD TV.
And if you've got access to a copy of DVD SP, you can already burn hi-def movies, but they'll play only on Macs.
iDVD doesn't, at present, make a good job of converting HD movies down to standard definition (in my opinion), so to shoot movies for others - e.g; weddings - I'd presently stick with standard def if you want to distribute the movie on a current, standard-def, DVD.
Don't forget that you can also use iMovie HD for creating HD projects from other material such as photos ..so you can create a stunning HD photo slideshow with music, dissolves, etc, from multi-megapixel photos - in far higher definition than normal standard-def TV allows.. and then copy that to HD tape, and then show the tape on an HDTV.
..Just a few thoughts about iMovie HD..

  • What Security Software to use?

I've been using Norton since the 80's and satisfied. Seems though not to work well with Lion and the Cloud. Are there any recommendations for a better package.

Mac OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known Mac malware takes the form of trojans that can only operate if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source.
Any website that prompts you to install software, such as a “codec” or “plug-in,” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” versions of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can possibly be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they're all counter-productive. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use ClamXav -- nothing else.

  • What Photoshop version or Product is right for my needs.

I run a Non-Profit organization, we started as a Off-Road Club, that wanted to start doing charity events and Off-Road type search and rescue. Basically we do events that take people into the middle of nowhere and teach safety and survival tips and training, and we do charity type events for taking challenged or under-privileged family and people out to teach off-roading and or camping also.
One of the biggest things we do is search and rescue in areas that normal rescue and law enforcement teams and vehicles cant access due to terrain and conditions like weather or no roads, most of us run highly modified 4x4 vehicles that can access any area, no matter the conditions or weather, a lot of the work relates to helping stranded people, hunters, hikers, campers, or people that try and take a stock luxury Suv on roads that they don't belong on in that type of vehicle, or during tornados, blizzards, or floods in Northern Wisconsin and Upper peninsula Michigan. What I would need the software for as the president and owner, is for photo evidence of conditions during rescues, and photos of rescues, and photos of charity events, I also make up mail-out bulletins to get new members and or volunteers, also packets with photos are used for getting supporters and donations.
So I don't need professional editing of photos, but I do need editing that looks good and makes us look professional, I do know my way around a computer, but I am not a expert.
So my questions stands with asking, what Photoshop software is right for my needs, because I don't want to spend money on software I don't need???
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I recommend Photoshop Elements, as that is designed for beginners and hobbiest in mind. In a sense, it holds your hand until you feel comfortable. I don't use that app, so I can not say on how much it holds your hand. I can only resite, what I have read.
That being said, I also do not know how much vector tools are in that app. Vector tool will help tremendously as they can make quick work out of doing flow chart type graphics, as in outline of bodies, arrows pointing to the location, lines showing paths or roads, and other hand made graphics that describe the area.
The reason for vector graphics, is they are scalable and do not take up as much ram or drive space. Don't get me wrong, raster tools (paint type tools) can be useful in doing the same thing, but they are a bit harder to alter, scale(especially larger), etc.
Therefore, Elements is great for learning, but professionally, Photoshop, illustrator and lightroom. So keep that in mind, when the time comes.

  • What software is used to develop complex programs like 'Adobe InDesign'?

    I want to find out:
What software is used to develop complex programs like 'Adobe InDesign'?
    Thanks.

Just to expand a bit for anyone who is interested:
Virtually all commercial software like InDesign, Photoshop, etc., is written these days in C or C++. That's not so much because C is such a vastly better language than anything else, it's more because in its advent it was vastly better than anything else at the time, and as a result, all software programmers know C by default. And once you have the beginnings of a codebase in C and a pool of software engineers who all know C, there is little reason to rewrite your code in some other language from scratch.
Your question about software pertains more to the IDE that is used to write the code. That will obviously vary from one company to another and could be as simple as a plain text editor coupled with a command-line C compiler, to any number of commercial IDEs that all basically accomplish the same thing. For a long time in the elder days, virtually all code development on the Mac was done with CodeWarrior, but these days practically everyone on the Mac just uses Apple's own Xcode environment. For Windows development, the two real biggies are either Microsoft's Visual Studio (probably 90% of all Windows development is done using this IDE) and to a lesser degree, C++Builder, formerly owned by Borland but now by Embarcadero.
When building the code into an executable package, the underlying compiler that most commercial software developers use is Intel's own compiler. The IDEs above all include their own free compilers; Intel's is a commercial product that is more finely tuned for Intel processors and produces cleaner machine code. On the Mac, Apple just uses GCC, a free open-source compiler that has been developed and used for many years by the Unix and Linux community.

If you upgraded to Snow Leopard, then it would seem that Suitcase 11 is not compatible with Snow Leopard and you'd need to buy Suitcase Fusion 3 for $99.95.

Ive just signed up for the adobe photoshop pack, i use a mac, when i click download, nothing is happening..  Am I doing something wrong?? When I try and open the software I already had from trial it says its expired,  or i need to use a serial number... HELP Anyone else experienced this?

If there is an option to "license this software", and it takes you to a sign-in page with username and password (not a serial number) - then just go ahead and sign in.
If it insists on a serial number you need to uninstall the trial. Then try to download again.

  • What's a good web design software to use with hype.

I didn't have luck with sandvox, rapid weaver, or highway. It seems that iWeb is gone and im trying to transition into a diffrent html5 compatible web software. I would like to learn web coding but for now i need a quick and efficiant transsition. I've came across Hype and its great but iWeb can use it. I would love to hear some suggestions on what everyone else is using (not including previously mentioned apps).

No, iWeb has not gone anywhere.  It is correct that Apple no longer sells it or supports it, but iWeb is an application like any other on your mac and if you have it you can most definitely still continue to use it.  It works with Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion and by all accounts, it will work with the new Mavericks too.
You can do a search of this site and there are literally hundreds of posts on the same topic of new web design software, but you can take a look at Flux 4, Freeway Pro/Express 6, WebAcappella 4 and Quck n Easy Website Builder.  Other than that, you are then looking at Content Management Systems such as Joomla and WordPress.
You can also take a look at EasyWeb which is a new app being developed by Rage Software - it has not been released yet and is still in its beta testing stage, but this is closer to iWeb than most.

  • What additional software requirements are needed when using Captivate with RoboHelp?

    Hello,
I use RoboHelp HTML 6 & 8 for developing online manuals for our government business.  We are currently exploring eLearning options for our training needs, and I am considering the idea of implementing Captivate features (PP slides, simulations, animations) directly into the manuals. We would not need the collaborative/review aspects of Captivate, so I believe we wouldn't need to purchase Adobe Air additionally. However, would anyone be willing to give me the lowdown on what additional software either I would need as a developer, or end-users would need (Adobe Flash, I assume) if we decided on Captivate? Would we need addtional software (Connect Pro/ LMS) to publish the Captivate content?
I have conducted an extensive online search and explored the forum threads with some success, but there is a lot of convoluted information out there!
Thanks in advance for your help!!

    Hi there
Speaking as one who regularly combines Captivate and RoboHelp...
Unless you really want some functionality that Captivate alone simply does not provide, you really shouldn't need any additional software whatsoever. You record the eLearning bits in Captivate, then you use that content in your RoboHelp projects.
Are you seeking to host things in a Learning Management System (LMS)? If so, you probably should abandon the thought of RoboHelp, as it serves a bit of the functionality the LMS would provide.
Note that AIR is a functionality similar to the Flash Player or the PDF Reader. It is free for the taking by the end user. There is nothing one would need to purchase. Now if you want to *AUTHOR* something in AIR, that's a different story. RoboHelp HTML version 8 will produce an AIRHelp output. But it sounds to me that you may be somewhat unfamiliar with what AIR gives you. So here's the skinny.
If you were to produce AIRHelp output from RoboHelp, you end up with a .AIR file that each of your end users must *INSTALL* just as they would have to install an application. That's just to view the help. Prior to installing your AIR output, they would also need to first *INSTALL* the AIR viewer. So if they had no AIR capability whatsoever, they would need to perform two different installs. One of the AIR runtime, and a second of your AIR output. Additionally, creating the AIR output will also require a digital certificate. Now RoboHelp will allow you to create one, but it's an untrusted certificate and the end user will be forced to acknowledge whether they wish to continue installing with an untrusted certificate.
Anyhoo, hopefully that helps you with at least some of what you were looking for.
    Cheers... Rick
