You pretty well answered your own question.. if the router hsa no WAN ethernet.. being a cable or adsl modem router I suppose then you clearly plug the TC into its LAN port.
All routers must have WAN port but in the case of the above examples it is a coax cable or phone port.
A general use router without a modem will have WAN port that is ethernet..
It is pretty easy to select which to use.. just think direction.. WAN always points to internet.. LAN always points to clients.

Presumably the mains cable, which you can get from an Apple Store.

  • Hi, I want to use my Capsule just as a back up via wireless. How do I set this up without connecting it with an ethernet cable to either a router or the iMac??

Hi, I want to use my Capsule just as a back up via wireless. How do I set this up without connecting it with an ethernet cable to either a router or the iMac??

I misunderstood what Time Capsule is and had hoped for a wireless backup device that didn't have to be connected to the router.
The TC is a wireless backup device.. it does not need to be connected to the main router..
The problem is the computer.. not the TC.. the computer has only one wireless card.. if your current internet is by wireless.. then you must choose.. internet or backup.
But my other suggestion will work.. get a wireless USB stick compatible with Mac OS.. there are plenty and cheap.. since you are in the same room as the TC they will work fine.. plug it in and load the driver.. taint hard.
You should do the first backup by ethernet though.. wireless is too slow.. once you have that, you will do fine.
Search ebay for wireless n usb.. Mac compatible..
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-EDUP-Mini-Wireless-11N-300M-USB-LAN-Card-WiFi-Adapte r-Nano-Card-Soft-AP-/150864362939?pt=US_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item2320 377dbb#ht_3553wt_1165
As you can see.. they are getting smaller and neater.
I have no idea if it works .. haven't tried one.. but I have used USB wireless stick on the Mac to overcome this issue.
You will need to set static IP .. not hard but you need to set specifics if you do buy one post again for the setup.

I have a problem with my iPhone 5 stopped working the sleep / power and simultaneously refused to obey the HOME button. I can not use either one or the other. I can not enable or disable the device, display lights up when you plug the charger. same display works fine as it is surprising. or maybe someone knows what is the reason for this? is there any way to solve this problem?

More than likely its a hardware issue, I have never encountered such a problem and best bet is to just go get it replaced. If you have insurance on your device apple will replace it as long as there was no water damage, if you dont have insurance they will charge $200 more or less. Hope you get it fixed

  • System froze when I plugged in ethernet cable, was this the cause?

I had wifi on when using the net, and then I plugged the ethernet adaptor into the thunderbolt port and plugged the ethernet cable into the adaptor, the system froze, the mouse or pad wouldnt work, so I forced shutdown,
was plugging in ethernet the cause of the system freeze? Should I have turned off wifi prior to plugging in ethernet?
Or should I not plug in ethernet while the laptop is on?

System.log  -- I'm using Lion, not Mountain Lion, but for me, one opens the Console application (in the Utilities folder) and look along the left side panel for system.log.
Also in the Console application you can look at DIagnostic and Usage Messages and also at All Messages. You'll be looking for something that sounds like a problem at the exact time that your freeze occured.
I've been doing this "hot plugging and unplugging" of the ethernet cables for years with several Mac laptops going through 10.6 and 10.7 (probably have done this a few thousand times) and have never actually experienced any issues while doing it. The area where I have seen some issues is with the laptops sleeping and not waking up properly, once in a while this has happened, but that's not related to what you had happen. Again, I was using 10.6 and am now on Lion (10.7) [employer hasn't upgraded us all to Mountain Lion, although that will happen shortly], so 10.8 might be a little different.

  • Will plugging an ethernet cable from a powerline adapter into my Airport Express improve the signal strength that it re-sends as WiFi?

I have a Airport Express (older style that plugs into the power socket) up one end of the house, which gets the signal from an AirPort Extreme at the front of the house.  It works ok for general internet and email, but the signal at the Airport Express end is not really strong enough for my Apple TV.  So today I bought an Edimax Powerline Adapter.  Connected one end to the AirPort Extreme and the other end to the Apple TV and Apple TV now works great!  So I was thinking, if I connected my Airport Express to the Powerline Adapter with an ethernet cable, would that improve the strength of the signal that the Airport Express would re-send out for WiFi.  But all that happens is that neither the AirPort Extreme or the Airport Express now seem to broadcast any WiFi signal.  Is it possible to do this?

Yes, but you need to change the mode of the Express from wireless extend to create a wireless network and the routing part to bridge. Otherwise it will indeed mess up.

  • HT3382 With a MacbookAir (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port, can you configure the external monitor to FULLY display in portrait mode yet keep the built-in display in landscape mode?

With an 11"-inch Macbook Air (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port:
Can you configure an extended desktop with an external monitor (20") displaying full portrait mode (1200 x 1600 resolution) and keep the built-in display in landscape?
I'd like to see something like
    External monitor / Built-in display

Yes, I can't see why not.
Just give it a try and report back if you have a problem.

  • Non-acknowledgement of plugged in Ethernet Cable

    Greetings!
This evening, when plugging in my laptop to the LAN network at my work, I encountered a problem that I am afraid may be signaling the need for expensive repair. Although I plugged in a working Ethernet cable (I verified on this computer!), the laptop's network status insisted that the cable for Built-In Ethernet was not plugged in. Is this a hardware failure?

Not necessarily. That is a catch-all description roughly equivalent to "It ain't workin' at all".
Exactly which powerBook makes a difference -- older ones require the correct cable (straight or cross) before they can function. The far more common straight cable has the same-colored wires in the same order at each end of the cable. Look through the clear connector body at the tiny wires inside.
There are also many configuration problems which could give you that result. Many corporate set-ups are using DHCP, so your System Preferences > Network > Built-In Ethernet must be configured to use that.
An IP Address must have been assigned, either automatically through DHCP, or manually. 192.168.xxx.yyy is the "self-assigned" IP Address range, which indicates you are talking only to yourself.

  • Can only get XBOX 360 to work by unplugging and then plugging in ethernet cable?

I have 2 desktop computers, 1 laptop computer and 1 Xbox 360 using this WRT54GS ver 6 router.  The desktops and the xbox are wired and the laptop is wireless.  I replaced my old linksys router which I never had a problem with for this one.  If my desktop computer is turned off and I turn on my XBOX, the router does not recognize the Xbox.  I mean the XBOX is plugged into port 3 and that light does not flash on the router.  Now, if I turn on my computer and then turn on my xbox, it still doesn't work.  If I turn on my computer, turn on my XBOX and then unplug the xbox ethernet cable from the back of the router and then plug it back in, then the router recognizes it and it works great.  I have had 2 chat sessions and I phone session with linksys and they cannot figure it out.  They had me go into my xbox and set a static IP address, gateway and DNS.  Then she had me go into forward a few ports on the router.  I never had to do any of this stuff with the old router by the way.  The last guy I talked to on the phone said I need to figure out a way to turn off "MAC Address cloning" in the xbox.  I checked  and there is no way to do this, so I think he is wrong about this.  Does anyone have ANY ideas as to why this problem is happening?

I had the same problem and I just typed my settings in manually on my xbox 360's network settings.(IP, and DNS).

  • Every time I plug an ethernet cable in my MacBook Air, my computer starts immediately. Why?

I'm using the Thunderbold adapter with the ethernet cable. As well, when it restarts I get taken to a white page that says "Your computer has restarted because a problem has occurred." My computer ALWAYS restarts immediately and very abruptly. What's wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

That should definitely not happen. The cause may be a defective Thunderbolt adapter. If you don't have another Mac with which to test it, exchange it for another. If an Apple Store is convenient for you, bring both the adapter and the Mac to them and have them determine what the problem is.

  • Problem with earphone when plug in Ethernet cable!!!

Hi guys, I bought the macbook pro 15 couple days ago. And I realize that whenever I use my Ethernet cable, my earphone has strange sound, so I unplug the earphone and plug it back, it's ok, but after few minutes (when I play a song) I hear that sound again. It doesn't happen when I use wifi (ethernet cable isn't plug in) and I also check it with another earphones but it's just like the first one . I just wonder if anyone have the same problem? Should I bring it to Apple? Thanks all.

I do not understand. Without third-part programs, the iPod will show up as a camera for get photos and videos off the iPod and it will show in iTunes for file transfer/syncing.
For photos/videos, the iPod shows up in My Computer and you see the photos/videos in the DCIM folder

  • Can you connect an ethernet cable to an Airport Express Extension?

I have an Airport Express that I am using as an extension to my current home wireless network.
That is successful and I have a green light. I am trying to plug in an ethernet cable to allow an older mac without an airport card to connect to that Airport Express Extension. When I turn off the airport and select Ethernet Cable, I am told that the cable is not connected to the internet. The wireless works fine and I can get full bars in the far part of my house - but I do not get internet when connecting an Ethernet cable.
    Help!
    Thanks in advance

  • Lost the white converter box.  Can you plug the USB into a computer to charge the ipad

Can you plug an ipad into the computer USB port to charge it?

You can plug it into a computer but it will be a very very slow charge. The best thing to do is go to any office / electronics store and get a new charger.
