What power supply????????---Help!!!!!!

Building new system,,,,,K8Nneo4 platinum SLi----with two 6800GT's and AMD64 4000+,,,,,WHAT POWER SUPPLY DO I NEED?????

Actually, you really do need to do your homework first. Go to takaman's Power Supply Calculator and figure out HOW MANY AMPS YOU NEED ON EACH RAIL. Watts mean nothing as many manufacturers make distorted claims anyways. And they also test their PSU's at 25c. At 50c many of those cheap 550w PSU's output will actually drop to something like 250w!! Check THIS out.
Here's the [H]ardOCP list of Un-reccomended and Unscrupulous Power Supply Companies:
Achieve
Aerocool
Allied
Aspire
Codegen
Coolmax
Demon
Deer
Devanni.
Dynapower
Eagle
E-power (except Tagan series)
InWin
JustPC
Kingwin
L&C
Linkworld
MGE,
PCMICS
Power-Man
Powmax
Power-Up
Raidmax
Thermaltakes (low end ones, butterflies are fine, and some enlight models, the TT category depends)
Turbo
Ultra-X (yes, the pretty looking ones, they are made by a low-quality Chinese company that starts with "Young". Can't get much more generic than that!!!)
X-superalien
X-treme
syar2003 gave you the best info you could have regarding a PSU for a SLI system. My personal recommendation? PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 510 SLI. The Enermax EG701AX-VE would be a good choice also, but for $25 more the PCP&C TC 510 SLI is definitely the top choice.
Look at it this way, you're going to have to spend $200 for a good SLI PSU anyways, why not get the best. I mean, it's just the most important component in your computer. If you're gonna spend $2000 - $3000 on your new Rig, do you really want to risk all that valuable hardware on some cheap PSU?
Anyone could buy that cheap PSU for their sweet new SLI Rig, but, they better have a fire extinguisher and $2000 handy when they've OC'd their new AMD64 4000+ and those two sweet 6800GT's and their cheap PSU bursts into flames.
We all like to get the best for as little as possible, but the PSU is NOT the component anyone should want to cut costs on.
Go over to The [H]ardOCP Power Supplies Forum and read the Stickies there.
Tons of extremely valuable info the on PSU's. Good Luck & Good Hunting.

The thing is that your Enermax power supply is going to cost me a bit more than the Coolmax power supply. However, I am willing to pay the extra cast IF its needed, but ONLY if its needed. So what do you guys think. Can anyone here give me an opinion as to which power supply is better suited for my needs
Also, if you think that none of these power supplies are good for me and I should go in a whole new directions completely... let me know what power supply you think I should go with instead, thnx

  • What Power Supply do I need ?

My friend gave me his old Mac Book Pro 15.4 " without power supply. I can not find Model number on Macbook body to buy Power Supply. On the buttom I see " Model number A1211" but apple store do not have this number on his list.
Is number A1211 belong to battery, not to computer ? What Model number for power supply I need to buy ? I found on E-Bay power supply A1172 (replacement for $23) Is this good ?
    Please help

Sounds almost too good to be true, if you ask me. Does the seller have a positive feedback rating? Does the seller provide complete information about the product? (New or used, condition, photos, etc?)
Just keep in mind that everything on eBay is pretty much at your own risk.

  • 990FXA-GD65 Power Supply Help

Hi there, I am currently looking to build a new computer, though I am trying to make sure before ordering the parts that my power supply will work.
I know that the power supplies listed under the motherboards tested section on it's information page is probably the best way to confirm, though I was curious if someone may be able to give me a hand as I would not like to buy a new power supply if the one I have is actually sufficient.  I have done some online calculations to see if the wattage is enough, and it has come back with positive results, though I am not sure if the ampage will be enough for what I am wanting to run.
Here is a list of the current parts that I am looking to run in the new system:
    MSI 990FXA-GD65
    MSI Nvidia Geforce 9800G2 1gb 800 MHz
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500gb HDD
    Kingston KVR1333D3N9K2/8G 8gb Ram
The power supply that I am looking to use is the TR2 RX-850 ATX 12V 2.2 14cm Fan.
    +3.3v/30A
    +5v/28A
    +12v/18A
    -12v/0.8A
    +5vsb/3A
the +3.3v and +5v have a combined max wattage of 180W
the +12V's have a combined max wattage of 720W
the -12v has a combined max wattage of 9.6W
the 5vsb has a combined max wattage of 15W
I am looking to buy the parts for the computer in a bundle, and this would be some helpful information to help with my purchase.  I am trying to stick MSI for as much as I can, though unfortunately there are no MSI power supplies!  If anyone has knowledge on the basis of my request, or just general knowledge to share about choosing a power supply, I am always open to hearing more and expanding my personal knowledge of computers.
Anyways, thanks for reading everyone, I look forward to your responses!

Thank you for the quick reply, I appreciate the fast response.
Out of curiosity, would a second MSI nvidia Geforce 9800 G2 1gb card be something that would add too much strain for the power supply?  In the future I would like to pop in a second card, though I don't want to burn anything out.  Also, are power supplies generally universally equal for their ability to hook into a board, or do some board require different cords and such?

  • I want to know what power supply I have

  • Power Supply Help for 466mhz G4 - where can i get a good deal.

I need to find a replacement for the power supply in the machine. It is an original 466mhz g4, agp graphics. The power supply says 126w max and had AC BEL on it.
Can anyone help me out in finding a cheap place to get a power supply that fits this machine perfectly? Looking for a reputable dealer (obviously).
    Thanx in advance.

    Hi Nelson,
You're machine is a Digital Audio (the only G4 to have shipped with 466MHz processors), and the PSU is 338W - which should be adequate for most things. Why do you need a new power supply?
If you need a new one, it won't be cheap. You can try this place:

  • K7T turbo 2 power supply HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Well to start I felt like changing My Computer case to a Quiter one. soo they gave me a new Power supply with it. I hooked everything up perfect. and when I went to turn it on NOTHING happens I rechecked anchecked again. then I notices the voltage on the new power supply was 5V and my old one was 3.3 Volts on the DC out put.  did I ruin My mother board or anything else?  please let me know I also tried to use the old power supply and nothing ------no Power.  PLEASE HELP.

The only diffence I see in the listed voltages, is the addition of the +5vsb, which is the "standby" voltage. It was likely present on the old PSU, just not listed.
As previously mentioned, recheck the power switch connection, and reset switch.
Also, look to insure there are no unused metal standoffs left behing the board, there should only be the 6 that are normally used to secure the board. Any extras can cause a short.
Just because the case is new, does not mean the power switch is good.
Also check the main power lead for a secure connection.
Might sound crazy, but does the new PSU have the power switch on the back? Those can be partly engaged, check to insure it is fully turned on.
I suspect the connections for the power switch are not correct, as you stated the old PSU does nothing as well.

  • IBook G3 M6497 - What Power Supply?

I got a free iBook G3 Dual USB, model M6497. The catch was that it did not come with a power supply, it had been in a closet for a few years and the owner doe snot remember where it was left X years ago.
Anyway, what model power supply do I need?
I know a guy with a M7332 yoyo, but I that one has a different tip, am I wrong and it will work?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    It takes this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8943LL/A
Some of the older yo-yo type adapters have the correct size tip, but some do not. I would advise buying the newer style so that you have the colored light ring which tells you when the battery is charging and when it isn't.

  • What power supply cord is for the photosmart 7150?

I lost the power supply cord for the hp photosmart 7150  and the only description   I can locate anywhere on HP's web or in the basic's guide  are these words  "The power supply is an external module. • What power supply do you recommend?

Well i've been having quite a few problems with my upgrade of late and I suspect that it maybe due to my "oldish" power supply. I have an Enermax 350W power supply.
What do you guys/gals advise that I get?

OMG, I think I just had my first low_12V_amp_PSU_symptom!
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6255_11-1041735.html Told me something about  bad (or too low powered PSU's):
    The symptoms
Just about any intermittent problem can be caused by a faulty power supply. I normally look there first when the symptoms are a little weird. Common power-related symptoms include:
    * Any power-on or system startup failures or lockups
    * Spontaneous rebooting or intermittent lockups during normal operation
    * Intermittent parity check or other memory-type errors
    * HDD and fan simultaneously failing to spin (no +12V)
    * Overheating due to fan failure (!)
    * Small brownouts that cause the system to restart
    * Electric shocks that are felt when the case is touched
There are also some obvious clues that should lead you to suspect a faulty power supply. These include:
    * A system that is completely dead (nothing happens when the system is turned on)
    * Smoke
    * Circuit breakers popping when the PC is turned on
My problem was: CPU.temp @ 81 oC in CoreCenter that sounded the alarm and eventually shut down the pc. (First I didn't notice the alarm, I was checking out SimCity4 and thought it was part of the game  )
Since the +12V rail handles the power of HD-motors and fans (http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=444&Itemid=0&limit=1&limitstart=1), I'm now afraid the CPU-fan didn't catchup when I increased the CPU load because it did not have the +12V power to do so!? Is this possible at all?
Maybe I'll follow SAB's advice and go through the hassle of changing my Zalman PSU for a Tagan TG480-U01 480 watt at my webshop....

  • Power supply help needed

I build and repair computers and am fairly new to mac. I love not having the BSOD anymore.
I know you can use the ALS power supply on the G5 20" iMac that doesn't use it (all you do is remove the ALS sensor portion) then you should be able to use any of these p/n's for a replacement, right?
    AP14P46, 614-0398, 614-0366, 614-0326, 661-3625, 661-3289, AP13PC97, 614-0279, DPS-180SB A, 614-0334, 661-3350 661-3289 614-0353 614-0296 614-0297
I have to repair several spares i.e. replacing the caps that are bad and am wondering what they will fit into. I know that you can't use a 17" iMac G5 PS in a 20" but you can use the 20" PS in the 17" but these are all for 20" iMac G5's
I am just curious if the above statement is true.

I know that putting a 17 into a 20 won't work because of the power requirements. However the 20 will work in a 17. The main issue that I am wondering is, if any of the model numbers listed above for the 20" will work in other 20" models? I also know that the ALS version will work that is why I put those model numbers into the mix because all you have to do to put a 20 ALS PS into a non-ALS 20 is remove the ALS portion on that particular PS. So I still need to know about the models numbers listed above, which ones will work and which ones will not? I have already talked via email with Jim and he is not sure. What I would like to do is get all of the model numbered power supplies and test connections / voltages on each one individually and that would answer all of the questions about which one will work in what. This is a real endeavor for me as I need to repair a few iMac G5's that have the bad cap issue. This has been a long standing problem ever since Apple ended their extended warranty repairs.
I might have one for you but I must repair it first. I am waiting for my DigiKey parts to arrive.
Since terms are different everywhere, is the "switchmode chip", you are talking about, the green tantalum cap on top of the smaller transformer taped to it with yellow tape?
I buy non-working iMacs or iMac PS's and repair them. And any other macs for that matter.

  • Dell Dimesnion 4600 Power Supply Help

I have an older Dell Dimension 4600 purchased from Best Buy. The power supply cord for the motherboard (20 pin) has the pin reversal where wires are in the opposite direction than usual. Is there to use an adapter or some other method to convert this connection to fit into a standard 20 pin connector?

did you swap out the power supply and use your own or something?

  • What power supply do I need for a dead AGP G4 with upgraded processor

I recently upgraded my 400Mhz G4 to a dual 500Mhz board and a bigger, faster HD. I also replaced the internal battery but now the Mac... she is dead. No power, no lights, no nothing.
Will I need an upgraded power supply for the new board, or is it just old and time for a replacement power supply.
I found this on Ebay... will it work?
"This 237W Astec power supply (Apple part# 614-0108) is a clean, working pull from a revision 2 Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth series computer (e.g. 350/400/450/500 MHz single processor) and will also work perfectly in previous models as well. "
    Thanks!
    AGP G4, Dual 500, 768Mb RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi,
The AGP Sawtooth Mac can be switched to an ATX PSU. Later models (Gigabit G4, Digital Audio, Quicksilver and later) have a different power supply and motherboard that passes 28 Volts DC from the power supply to a connector for the ADC port graphics card. (28 VDC is passed to the Graphics card ADC port to power Apple's ADC monitors, introduced in Summer 2000 MWNY.) A standard PC ATX Power Supply does not have 28V DC and will not be pin compatible with the Gigabit G4 and later G4 systems.

  • What power supply attachement do you use and why?

Hey All! im curious i use to use the AC wall plug that came with the magsafe charger but recently started using the power cord for more length. I started using it since im home most of the time and the outlets are pretty far from the sitting arrangements. So what do you use and why?
    Thanks!

I use the longer one all the time, as I usually end up aways away from a plug, and its easier to fit into an outlet or power strip that is already overburdened with warts.
I don't understand why one cord is grounded, and the other is not. The brick clearly doesn't need grounding, so why is the longer cord grounded? Is it some sort of weird law?
When travelling, I ALWAYS throw the little short flip-out plug in though, just in case I am in some archiac building that has not been updated with 3-prong grounded wiring. I also heard that in Canada, most or all of the plugs are two-prong only.
