What problems I might face: Mac Pro and RAID on Lion

I have the following setup:
1 SSD - for OS X (currently OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
3 HDD (RAID 0) - two partitions (Documents and Media)
1 HDD  - with 2 partitions 1st SSD backup, 2nd Documents partition backup
(all media files from Media partition are backed up to an external 4 HDDs Raid 5 on Rocstor’s ArcticRoc 4T)
My Documents and Mail folders are soft-linked from SSD to Documents partition on Raid0
Reading different sourced on the web I found that Lion is doing not very good with RAID, at least created on Snow Leopard even if RAID is not used to boot the OS X Lion from).
What problems I might face if I:
upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion
do clean install of Mac Os X Lion
Has anyone tried the OS X Lion in similar setup?
Any ideas and observations from practical experience are highly appreciated.
Thank you

I have an installer since I have my Macbook pro 17” mid 2010 upgraded to Lion few days ago.
My media files take over 2TB now and therefore I use 3x3TB RAID0 - 6TB for media and 3TB for Documents (Documents, Mail, Music, Downloads)
My mail is taking 2.25GB of disk space, it is not that much and might be moved to SSD especially if it benefits from it even if I do not really care will I get my email message displayed in 0.2 or 0.02 of second.
The most important think I would not like to lose are my media files and I would not like to find me in a situation when after I install Lion I have no access to my media nor on my local RAID or an External one (backup). The performance is very important as well and even if RAID works I would not like to find out that the same RAID HDDs on Lion are performing slower….
I think I will wait few updates of Lion prior to upgrading my MP to it.
P.S. MPG I guess is mac performance guide, and if yes - I know it. But what AYM is? Google returns me different results for AYM… starting from “Awards for Young Musicians” to “Aerobics, Yoga & More”

  • What graphics card or cards Mac Pro and Dual 30 inch ACD's?

I am hoping that you can all help with a few questions regarding running two 30 inch displays in a new Mac Pro and using Final Cut Pro, Motion, and After Effects.
My issue is which card(s) to order... Two NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB or the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB.
Can FCP work off of two different Graphics Cards? I would hook one display to each NVIDIA card via the Dual Link DVI port.
Or with the ATI, I would hook one monitor to the Dual Link DVI and one to the Mini Display Port with the adapter.
The ATI is obviously a more powerful card individually; but, two NVIDIA cards would allow for each monitor its own "lane," which seems like it would be an advantage.
Any advice would be great. I am primarily an FCP user and probably hit After Effects for 25% of my work.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Neither Motion or Color support dual graphics cards.
FCP used to have issues but they have been addressed in v7 (reportedly).
The 4870 is the better card by far but don't know if it will support 2 30" monitors. In any case, you are spreading the VRAM over a lot of pixels. You'd probably have better response driving 2 24" monitors.

fwiw - I don't see the benefit of gigantic monitors. They take up an enormous amount of desktop space, draw a small city's worth of power and don't offer that many more pixels.

  • Mac Pro and Raid and boot camp.

Hi. I was not sure where to ask this exactly but here is the question. I have 3 500gig drives. 2 are setup on a striped raid as the start up disk with the Mac OS. I wanted to setup the 3rd drive with Vista using Boot Camp. Reading the threads I was under the impression this could be done.
Thanks a ton for your help.

Yes it can. If it won't let you install, BootCamp may not create a Vista friendly partition. And best to format the drive under Vista, restart, then proceed with install. You may want to or need to pull your other drives just during the format and install phase of Vista as the presence of a GUID Mac OS X drive can interfere.
I've installed Vista on a dedicated drive about 3 times, but still waiting for more and better 64-bit support for some programs (probably SP1).

  • What is better Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Exel

I am working on Macbook pro retina for around 16 hours a day,  it is ok but the screen is to small. I am opening about 25 - 30 EXCEL windows, 20 - 25 safari windows at the same time. Excel windows are small, they only show 40 rows and S column   Now I am considering buying  iMac 5k ( but the screen is only 27", however a very high resolution but I think that fonts and digits displayed may be too small ). I am also considering Mac Mini or Pro with 40" 4K TV ( 4k computer monitors are 27 - 31" , so better idea would be purchasing iMac 5k ) . The problem is that 40 - 42" TV don't have Display Port ( I can't find  it anywhere )
Please help me to choose what would suit my needs better. I need large screen to work comfortably with an Excel sheets.  What is better? Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Excel ?. The other problem I have is that when I spend  16 hours at work with retina macbook , my eyes are ok. Using the  30'' Dell screen 2560/1440 my eyes are tired after 2 hours.
Thanks for your help on advance
    Best regards
    David

Currently you can only get 4 K at 30 Hz via HDMI. Some users have reported jerky curser movement because of the 30 Hz.
I would go for the 5K iMac. You can add a second screen at 4K.

How is your external drive formatted? Use Disk Utility to check the volume format. If it is NTFS, you will need to reformat the HDD as exFAT in order to retain universal compatibility (RW to it on both Mac and Windows).

If you use Windows program to partition the Hard Drive, the Apple partition gets destroyed.
Windows does not understand it is a guest on your Mac, and throws garabge wherever it pleases.

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

  • I just installed a 3TB hard drive on an early 2008 mac pro and the system doesn't recognize the drive.  What now?

I just installed a 3TB hard drive on an early 2008 mac pro and it is not recognized/not visible.  What now?

If the drive is correctly installed on to the sled, and the mounting screws are snug, not tight, and the sled is inserted properly so that all the roof-tangs catch as the sled is inserted, failure to show up in Disk Utility means the drive is not useable.
A Bug in 10.8.4 and later precludes Disk Utility ERASE-ing large drives in Internal bays. Use PARTITION only, and create one new partition, GUID partition Map, Mac OS Extended (journaled) Volume.

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro and want to install a 3TB internal hard drive. Is this compatible? The manual indicates 1 TB per bay, but I have already installed two 2 TB hard drives in two other bays, and have had no problems. Any suggestions?

    RE: SATA Bus speed:
Typical Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.

I have a new mac pro and can't get a side scroll bar.  How can I get this?

The scroll bar is now set to appear automatically when you start scrolling with a trackpad or scroll wheel mouse. If you are using an mouse without a scrolling device, you should change a setting.
In System Preferences, click General, and in the Show Scroll Bars section, click the option for how you want it to work. If you want to see them all the time click "Always."

  • Cannot Complete Installation of Vista with Mac Pro and Boot Camp

I only have one hard drive with my Mac Pro, and I partitioned the drive into two sections with boot camp and restarted with my Vista 64 bit Ultimate CD.
I have tried formatting the partition with Vista and it still gives me the dreaded error message of "windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria". I've tried deleting the partition during installation, and making a new partition with Vista, reformatting, then restarting the computer. Same message.
I don't know what to do. I've tried like mad searching for topics like this one here, but every one of them deals with installing vista on a second dedicated hard drive on the Mac Pro. I only have one. How do I get this to work?
Please help if you can. I would REALLY appreciate it. I'll be watching the thread. Thank you!!

Thank you for your reply! I'll be here all night.
I have the 3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors. I tried installing Vista ultimate with my 32 bit software, but I still get the same message (I own both legally, btw).
    Thanks for your help.
    Several things to do:
Run OS-X Disk utility and repair the disk if necessary, and file permissions.
Be sure your HD has the GUID partition scheme and if it has SMART that it's OK
    Zap the PRAM
Be sure you are logged in as administrator when creating the BC partition and starting the installation of Windows from Leopard
When I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit, I was using BootCamp beta, 1.2 or 1.3. I created the partition with BootCamp Assistant.app as you did. It's a 60GB partition that I formatted with NTFS with BC.
After starting the install in Tiger, I then simply inserted the Vista 64-bit DVD and that was it.
    It just installed.
Ditto with XP-Pro on my other MBP. Zero problems with BC. It was also done with a beta, BC1.0.
I have never installed Windows using Leopard. When I updated to Leopard from Tiger nothing changed, but there seem to be more problems with Leopard and BC2.0 than there were with Tiger and the beta versions.
There are no requirements about legality until after the OS is installed, so that's a moot point.
There are some install DVDs that are in ISO format and they won't work, but it seems that yours is working but not finding a suitable volume.
You might try reformatting the BC partition with BootCamp assistant as FAt32 and seeing if that works, but you are limited to 32GB if you do that, but it would be a good test. Vista should then format it into NTFS.
Be sure that your Leopard OS is fully backed up because stuff happens when you keep fooling around with partitions.
