What programs do you run in Background?

On my never ending quest to track down the reasons for Logic "Pro"'s quirks and oddities, I'm wondering how many people routinely run other programs in the background?
Has anyone seen conclusive evidence that programs such as Mail, Safari, Dashboard or others will interfere with Logic's performance?
I realize the safest route is, of course, to turn everything off. But how many people actually do that, and how many have real world experience to prove it's necessary?
Just curious.

Often I run Firefox and Preview (LPmanual) in the background. They use about 200MB RAM - but that is the only drawback. No strange events here - so far...
...but I don't run anything when I'm working on music.
Right now I am mostly busy learning Logic this way. And I had dashboard and spotlight disabled as soon as I discovered how. I use a separate disk cataloguer (CatFinder 2.7) to find things - it also shows all system- and invisible files in a search. I don't care much for all the extra services and assistants and animation options, in fact ideally I would like to see a slimmed down, DEDICATED OS X 'pro' version, made for stand-alone (not internetconnected) Pro Audio and Video applications. It could even be installed beside the 'allround' OS X, and selectable in Startup Disk.
In OS 7 to 9, an experienced user could easily adapt the system to it's actual needs, by removeing unnecessary extensions. I do not dare do that yet in OS X, simply since it has so much more seperate components (On my system about 650.000!!, whereas OS 9 held only a few hundreds, including invisibles.)
I think there's a lot in there I do not need. I did delete all printerdrivers except the one I use, but that is about as far as I dare go yet...
regards, Erik.

what program do you recommend to download movies onto my macbook pro

    iTunes.
Not sure what you're asking. You don't require any software other than what your MacBook Pro already has. If you ever encounter a popup window indicating you need something else, it's a scam and you should ignore it.

I've never been much of a gamer, but I distinctly remember playing this game too. A couple weeks ago i went and looked for old games like this, and TIM was one of the ones i found. I don't remember where I got it, but I'll put it up here for a day or two so you can grab it (it's abandonware): http://atrum.com/tim/.
Oh and I came across Legends (mentioned previously) in a slashdot post the other day and the game is gorgeous. I've never played either Tribes game, so I'm still getting used to the controls, but it's fun. Have been looking into contributing to the project. Just too bad they can't release all the sources for it (it uses the Torque engine).
As for the games I play, the ones I have played have been native to Linux, like Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 and RTCW. Speaking of which, I guess i should try out ET since everyone is raving about it. Now where's that damn CD...

  • What Resolution are you running your MBP-R at?

I got mine last Tuesday, I "Listened" to the fact that Apple has a "retina optimized' setting, right in the middle.  While Safari looks amazing at that setting, Firefox, safari, word and excel while looking VERY good are not as sharp.  Since then, I kept upping the resolution, now at the max, 1920 x 1200.  The non-optimized programs seem a LOT sharper, and life is good!  (Plus, I have oodles more screen real-estate.  I am 62 and prolly not the sharpest eyes, so wondering what others are finding works for them?
    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,
Everyones eyes are different, use what you like best. The retina display is awesome, and I find myelf changing the res. to fit a particular application, if I will be using it for a while., ei. flight sim, CAD, regular Apple stuff...
I say just enjoy what is best for you.

  • What programs do you recommend for email marketing?

We use Act for our databases and Outlook but have heard that Outlook creates problems with HTML distortion.  We're wondering, before we start a project, if we should use Dreamweaver for HTML, or copy and paste from InDesign or Illustrator to Outlook?  Or should we try a program other than Outlook?  We have CS5.5 but would be willing to upgrade if that would eliminate potential problems.  We need some expert advice!
    Please help!
    Ann0899

Dreamweaver will work, those other programs should never be used to create html emails or html in general, ever.
HTML email isn't the same as creating a website, there are a ton of oddities to working with html email. Here's a good article on the subject from one of the contributors here (Nancy O) that sums up most of what you need to do...
    http://alt-web.com/Articles/HTML-Emails.shtml
Sending really should be handled by a service like mailchimp.com, icontact.com or constantcontact.com (or similar) to avoid potential problems with getting your email address blacklisted.

  • What memory are you running in your KT6 Delta?

I am looking at upgrading my memory. I am going for 1GB of pc3200 with decent latency. Please post your memory configuration as i want to know what works with the KT6 Delta before making a purchase
I also wonder if i can use dual-channel memory even thought the board doesnt support it. So i wont need to upgrade my memory when i get a new dual-channel board.
    I would like to stay under/around $200

    HyperX as per sig.
Don't understand your question "can I use dual channel memory even though the board doesn't support it." Makes no sense. Since the board doesn't support it the answer is surely no.
BUT, if you mean "can I use 2 sticks which I'd normally buy for dual channel memory" then the answer is definitely yes. There's nothing special about dual channel memory kits - they are just matched pairs, that's all. The Delta series has 3 DIMM slots so go ahead and buy 2 sticks.
Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick!

  • I have a grey exclamation mark showing in the middle of my display - regardless of what program I am running....anyone know what it means?

I have a grey exclamation mark showing in the middle of my Macbook Pro display - any ideas what it means?

    Grey "Exclamation Mark"?
A yellow means no Mac OS partition for a HDD.
Maybe you have a power symbol like this one
If so, your mac is having Kernel Panics.
Could be caused by a system folder corrupted, faulty HDD, Faulty RAM or FAulty Logic Board.
    What to do:
    - Backup your data (use TimeMachine if possible)
    - Erase your HDD and Make a fresh install
    - If still happens, there is a hardware issue. If works fine on a new install, it was OS, so just start migrating your data back.
    Good luck

  • What programs do you use?

i use flash 8 and ilfie i ll start with final cut studio pro 2 in some months =)

I use Final Cut Express on my MacBook. It is supported and works fine. If you want final cut pro you will need a MacBook Pro as suggested by Douglas.
I also use Photoshop CS3, QuickTime Pro, and Parallels running Windows XP. For burning I use Toast Titanium.
For browsers I use FireFox and Safari. For Baseball I use MLB.TV Mosaic.

  • What resolution are you running your 30inch Apple monitor with?

(NTSC)I have an 8core mac with the 30" cinema display. The only resolution that looks sharp with FCP is 2560 by 1600 but the motion adjustment window in FCP is too small. I've tried other resolutions but the only other one that matched the 30" side to side is 2048/1280 but the text looks a little blurry. The other presets don't fit the screen.
Is there a way to be able to switch to other resolutions?

In case you didn't know this to be fact - that's the nature of LCD displays (vs old-school tubes, that is), they only look right at a single resolution.
I take it you can't resize the window in question? In case you weren't aware, you can drag a tab (say the Motion tab) from one window (the Viewer) into another (say the Timeline) to quickly give yourself more wiggle room. Or you can simply drag the tab out and it should stay open in it's own (floating) window, if my memory isn't failing me.
Or does all that still not get to the heart of your problem?

  • How to make a program run in background?

Is there any ways to make an invisible program with java? a program that is running in background but the user cannot see it and it's not in the Start bar and the user cannot close it.

There are also 3rd party software that lets you install a java program as a service in winnt/2k/xp so that you can start/stop it from the service manager, doesnt even matter if the java program is gui based or not, as there are options (in win2k at least) in the service manager that allows the program to interact (think show gui) or not...one software called JNT comes to mind..
Anyway, if you're using win98/me equivalent, then just use javaw.exe like suggested by previous posters.

  • I need free network analyzer software for my mac. we are trying to monitor what software may be running which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem.what is recommended?

My internet keeps 'tripping' at or around the same period time each day.  We have already replaced our modem from our internet provider and we bought a new airport extreme router. We do not believe these were the cause, although we have now ruled them out as a cause.  Everytime the internet fails, our internet provider company tells us that there is still plenty of signal coming into our house. There is something going on inside we believe, and a technician set up our Network Utility to run a continuous ping test to capture information about when it 'trips' againn.  Yesterday, it happened again, and when he checked the data out, he said he is sure there is something 'running in the background' on my IMac.  He advised me to download a free Network Analyzer so he could further investigate what is was that was causing the problem, so I need a free network analyzer software for my Mac. The issue has been going on for a long time, so it is not the new operating system, Lion. This morning, we changed the radio channel from 'auto' to 'manual' and set a new channel, hoping that might help. We are trying to find out what program may be running (even a tiny one in the background) which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem. What is free downloadable product is recommended?

Will Activity Monitor and/or Network Utility, both already in the Utilities folder on your Mac, help in trying to diagnose the problem.
If you are connecting via wifi what encryption are you using? If you're using the Exteme I doubt that you are using WEP, but worth checking as it seems Macs don't like it and work better using WPA.
