What Quicktime files do Final Cut Express support ?

im trying to import a quicktime file that was MP4 and i exported it to .mov and it still won't import any seggestions?

MOV is just a container, not a format or encoded format. You can use a utility like MPEG Streamclip to convert your MPEG-4 movie to DV for use in FCE.

  • What video formats does Final Cut Express support?

I have Final Cut Express HD 3.5. What video formats are compatible with this program? Also, what frame rate and aspect ratio do my videos have to be in for Express to accept the video file?

Good of you to have read the manual. It helps us answer the question now that you've included that information.
Your material must be converted to either DV, HDV or AIC (FCE Native formats). As you have discovered, while FCE will accept a number of non-standard or native formats, it will not play happily with them.
DV and HDV are anamorphic formats. That is, they use non-square pixels. Standard DV is 720x480 (a 3:2 ratio) that FCE will do the conversion magic and have is display in a 4:3 format. Widescreen DV (aka 16:9) is ALSO 720x480 but the narrow dimension of the pixel is oriented the other way. When you tell FCE that the file is 16:9 anamorphic, it will do the magic and display the material properly. If you do not, it will display as though it is standard definition 4:3 and the people will be much skinnier but not taller.
HDV is 1440x720 but displays in 16:9.
AIC can be 1280x720 or 1980x1080.
All other dimensions are not supported and you may have very unreliable results when using them. This very limited abiltiy to deal with more than a couple of formats was one of the main differentiation points between Express and Final Cut Pro. There were a great number of other differences but this was one of the biggest limitations for most consumer level users.
If you want to edit a lot of non-standard,  non-native formats, look into Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro is within the editing paradigm of Final Cut Pro/Express. Final Cut Pro X has gone in a different direction which involves a new learning curve. Don't be fooled by the name, it is a very different animal than Express.

  • DVC Pro HD Quicktime files to Final Cut Express.....Possible?

    Hi
Had a filmmaker send me Selects from a project I did with her in DVC PRO HD Quicktime format
from her Final Cut Pro. Only audio will play in my Final Cut Express. Will she have to reformat and send again in a more FCE friendly format or is there anything I can do from the FCE end to access the footage?
    Thanks Mike

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE HD can only handle HD content through Apple Intermediate Codec (1080i or 720p), so your friend must choose this codec to export his material.

Does Final Cut Express support ProRes 1080p?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
ProRes codecs was introduced with Final Cut Studio 2.
You can't create a ProRes sequence in FCE, but if you've installed the +Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder 1.0 for Mac+ you will be able to import ProRes footage, but rendering or conversion will be needed.

What to do if Final Cut Express was installed after Aperture, on a new MaBook Pro Retina running OS X 10.7.4?

Bear in mind 10.7 and FCE are not supported working together.
FCP X is the supported application for Lion.
Users find FCE can mostly work to not working at all with Lion.
You can dowmlaod a trial of FCP X from the App Store.

  • TS2179 import files from final cut express to idvd

Import files from final cut express to idvd. When we are making a dvd in iDVD importing the files (widescreen mov files ) from final cut express they automatically change to 4x3. They look correct when played in the quicktime player. Has anyone had this problem.

Generally, I just drag the DV file from the finder to the iDVD menu window. Make sure you don't drag it to any Drop Zones, I think that might be your problem with the DV file showing up as the background. If you have default settings in iDVD, this drag and drop should then create submenus based on your chapter markers.
I'm not sure if you have any issues with the Chapters not showing up in QT. If you're expecting them to show up, then make sure that when you do the Export to QT that the option to include Chapter Markers is set. Upon conversion, you should see the Chapters within QT as well as when imported into iDVD.
    Hope this helps!

  • Can't move a soundtrack file into Final Cut Express

I most likely doing something wrong. Who can give me directions for importing a Soundtrack file into Final Cut Express.

What I do Les is go to Share in Sound Track then ...Share to iTunes. Then I go to iTunes and drag it to the desk top then import via FC. There maybe is an easier way but I don't know it.

  • Can I export Final Cut Pro files to Final Cut Express?

Can I export Final Cut Pro files to Final Cut Express?

FCE only works with DV for standard definition and the Apple Intermediate Codec for HD. Most FCP projects cannot be opened in FCE.

  • Avchd? does final cut express support it?

I just heard the final cut pro is now supporting this format, my question is will final cut express support also now??

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Look on Final Cut express scpec web page:
    "Input/Capturing Video
Plug-and-play support for most DV25-format camcorders and decks: MiniDV and DVCAM (NTSC or PAL)
Plug-and-play support for most HDV-format camcorders and decks: 720p, 1080i
FireWire device control of most FireWire-enabled MiniDV and HDV camcorders from leading manufacturers such as Sony, Canon, Panasonic, and JVC"

  • IMPORTING MEDIA FILES in FINAL CUT EXPRESS PLEASE HELP!!!!

I recently purchased a sony handycam that uses a hard drive instead of DV tapes. I'm trying to use final cut express to edit my footage but when I try to import the files from my camera, the files are unrecognized. I've tried to view them on the quicktime player and that also doesn't recognize them. I believe the files are MPEG2. Im a student and I have to finish this video project by next week and I was hoping to at least have gotten started tonight but have been spending hours just trying to import files. I'm terribly confused!!! If anyone knows what I should do PLEASE HELP. I don't want to have to do my editing on my dell laptop using a windows movie maker.

Those type of files are not directly supported by FCE. You will have to convert them to DV at the Sequence setting you use. eg. PAL 48 kHz.
Software or hardware based solutions are available.
Search this Forum for "Streamclip". This is one software solution.

  • Does Final Cut Express Support Other Formats (Avi, MPEG, flv, etc)?

I'm relatively new to Final Cut and I'm pretty excited to give this baby a try. Anyway, I've got some videos to edit and I know this software supports Quicktime videos but what about other formats such as Avi, MPEG, FLV, etc.? Do I need to get a third party software to convert these videos or can Final Cut Express handle them automatically?
Also, when I want to edit a video and viewing it on the viewer (The screen next to the Canvas), the screen is all white when it's being paused or when I want to scroll it with the dial thingy. Why is that?

    Hi,
Final Cut Express 4 supports only DV, HDV and AVCHD (last one only on Intel CPUs) using the Apple Intermediate Codec.
On other than these formats, you can use Mpegstreamclip (www.squared5.com) to convert your files into one of those supported formats, DV or Apple Intermediate Codec (when using HD material).
    Regards,
    Armando.

  • Need help with editing AVCHD files in Final Cut Express 4

The AVCHD files were recorded on a Canon HG10 before I bought a Mac Pro OS X 15.1.
I transfered them to a file on my desktop, like the instructions tell me to do, but when I get to the part of "mount the media files in the log and transfer", I get stuck.
The file is named AVCHD and when I try to upload it into the Log and Transfer window through the little plus sign on the left hand top corner, I get the following message:
"AVCHD" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
It does not allow me to import the files individually. I tried dragging the files to where it says "Drag media here" and nothing happens. If I try to drag the file to the area in the top left corner of log and transfer, I get the same message as above.
What do I need to do?

I have a different camcorder, but my experience might be of help to you.
I have a Sony HDR-UX1 AVCHD camcorder that records to 8cm DVDs.
I tried using Apple Final Cut Express 4's FILE > LOG AND TRANSFER command to capture directly from the 8cm DVD, which resided in an external Sony DVD drive... and I was not successful.
Then, I remembered my experience on Windows XP where I used Corel's Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus.
With Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus, I found I had to drag the contents of removable media discs and disks to my Windows desktop, which then allowed me to use the software video capture tools successfully.
So I tried the same thing with Apple Final Cut Express 4.
I dragged the BDMV FOLDER on my 8cm AVCHD disc to my Mac's desktop.
I then used the FILE > LOG AND TRANSFER command and simply browsed to the folder on the desktop and -- Voila! -- the contents of the folder appeared as video thumbnails in the LOG AND TRANSFER WINDOW and everything worked.
    Hope this helps,

  • Sony DCR SR42 files and Final Cut Express

Hi - I am the owner of a new MacBook which I bought specifically to edit movies from my Sony hard disk Camcorder. I have since found that this model is not on the list of supported camcorders for iMovie and in fact iMovie does not recognise the mpeg files saved by the camcorder.
Can anyone tell me whether Final Cut Express would work with this camera? If not I will probably have to exchange my mac for a PC laptop.

    Hi there,
I'm having the same problem with the same camera. I'm replacing it with a mini DV (picture quality is much better and so is compatibility with iMovie '06 and FCE).
But I've still got a ton of footage from the Sony that I need to convert.
When you converted your footage, what file format did you use? Were you happy with the new quality? And was the resulting footage easy to work with? Anything else you can share?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can I Transfer iMovie files to Final Cut Express HD?

I have just upgraded from iMovie to Final Cut Express HD.... I had captured 15 hours of world travel movies in iMovie and realized I needed a more powerful application to do the travel movies justice. But I am wondering if I can use the raw material that I imported or.... YUCK>... if I will have to re-capture the files in Final Cut. Can anyone let me know a solution that saves time?
    Thanks

apologies for naff formatting (reposted from an old blog post on an old website). Piero, do you fancy taking this on and hosting it? Improving it? I'm still out of the video editing world so I'm not really interested in reviving any of my old stuff yet.
File below is hosted on my mac so if the link is down, try again later.
This is only any good for DV stuff. No HDV stuff

OK, here's what I'd do based on what I've tried so far in getting iMovie
.dv files into FCE and avoiding having to render.
Open your iMovie .dv file in Quicktime Pro.
    Extract the audio track
Export the audio track as a Quicktime Movie, Linear PCM format, Channels Stereo (L R), 48kHz, 16bit sample size
Delete the audio track from the .dv file
Open the exported audio file, select all and copy.
Select All in the .dv file
Add the exported Audio file using Add to Movie
Export/Save As the .dv file as a self contained Quicktime Movie
    Use this movie in FCE
The benefit of this approach as opposed to exporting .dv file in one go is
that the only thing that is truely exported, etc is the Audio track which is
relatively quick. The video track is left unchanged so there is no loss in
    quality.
The resultant file never has to be rendered in FCE.

    Download: i5m_iMovie2FCE v0.9
It's an Applescript droplet that you can drag the iMovie DV stream media files onto and it'll run away and convert them. There's also a standalone version of the script if you want to run it from the script menu on individual files, etc. It's a 0.9 release since for ease of development in Applescript it doesn't include any error handling, etc. Also I've just realised it assumes 16 bit audio.

  • Is iDVD compatible with quicktime movies from Final Cut Express 4?

I am trying to find out if iDBD can be used with Final Cut Express 4 output or is it just for imovie?  If it can be used with FCE4 what is the extension.  Thank you.

    Hi
Yes - IF YOU DO IT RIGHT.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving
