What resolution is best when connecting to TV?

I have just got myself the mini-DVI to VGA adapter to connect my MacBook to my TV, the list of different resolutions available to use as the output seems almost endless and I struggled to make any sense of it! ... currently I have it set to 1280 x 768, 60Hz which gives a great picture but doesn't quite fit my screen ... I was wondering if someone who understood the difference between all the different output options could tell me which would be best for my screen ... the tech specs are here ... http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=KDL-37P3020&productsku=KDL 37P3020U&site=odwenGB&pageType=TechnicalSpecs&imageType=Main&category=TVP32-40+Sony+BRAVIATV
Many thanks, Matt

It is best to refer to the user manual for the TV. There should be a section about making PC connections in it. Is 1366 x 768 an option in Displays preferences on the MacBook? That should look the best.

Mine has four  Seriously shauntana the splitter is easy, a simple click to changre feed and eventually you will damage the HDMI port or cable by taking it in and out.  True you can only use one feed at a time nut you can only use one port on the telly at one time too.  I used it on my old one port telly for PS3 and Sky and it worked a treat.

  • What accessory to use when connecting to Harman Kardon AVR

    Hi,
we use a Harman Kardon AVR 145 for our audio at home. Please can anyone advise me what accessory to use for connecting the iPad? We have the bridge for our iPod, but that is no good of course. Please advise on a cable to use. Thanx!

Sorry, but you'll have to either wait for someone owning that equipment to show up or for someone to take the time and trouble to look it up and see what sort of connection options are provided on it. Or, if you want to perhaps move the process on a bit more quickly, and seeing as how you have it right there, you could always provide that info.

  • What is the BEST cable connection from Canopus ADVC 300 to Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card?

I must connect an ADVC 300 to a Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card.   For best quality, which cable should I use?
On the ADVC 300 there are outputs of firewire, S-VHS and RCA.
On BMPro it's a little confusing. On the breakout cable there are connectors that say:
    -5 B-Y OUT
    -4 Y OUT
    -3-R-Y OUT
    -7-R-Y IN
    -8-Y IN
    -9 B-Y IN
    -15 AUDIO IN RIGHT
    -10 AES/EBU OUT
    -12 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -14 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -13 AUDIO RIGHT OUT
With the BMPro, there is also a separate, shorter cable.  On one end it looks like S-VHS and on the other there are two connectors, one black and one blue.
On the actual BMPro Express card strip instead of using the breakout cable, there is HDMI IN (and HDMI OUT).
How should I connect this?  Is there an adapter cable of FIREWIRE TO HDMI?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Well, when I researched how best to digitize VHS (into Final Cut Pro 7), I learned two of the best devices to use are BMPro and Canopus ADVC 300.  I’m using the ADVC 300 for the built-in time base corrector.  I definitely want to use that to stabilize the video.  I also read how well BMPro improves image quality.  So, I thought to use the two together must produce outstanding quality (well, as good as VHS can be).
Perhaps I got confused into thinking I can use both.  But the BMPro appears to have an S-VHS adapter.
I guess I’m wondering what is better quality:
Run the firewire from the Canopus ADVC 300 converter directly into the firewire port on the Mac Pro
Or, run an S-VHS cable from the Canopus ADVC 300 into the BMPro Capture card
(I should mention that I have purchased all these items and already have the BMPro Card installed so at this point it’s not a cost issue, but rather an issue of simply which works best?)

  • Preventing screen resolution settings changing when connecting a beamer

I do a lot of presentations and every time I connect a beamer (not my own, one that is in the hotel or conference room, so different models every time) my MBP screen settings go often haywire.
My screen resolution on the MBP 15' (OS SL) is set at 1680x1050 (high resolution screen).
As said it does not hold as soon as I connect a beamer and at times the setting is not even available any more, at other times all of a sudden I have dozens more settings, etc. This is of course, to say the least, annoying, and sometimes I spend 10 or more minutes to get my screen to behave in a workable fashion.
Result is that my resolution on my screen become unworkable as (mostly) it defaults to real big resolution (and as such big script) that makes lots of items on the top bar 'invisible' (they fall of the screen).
Is there any trick to prevent this from happening?
    Thanks.

Excuse you, it's the same problem because my Cintiq has a problem taking in the screen resolution, which is why I'm not getting it to display properly. I explained it before, so if you can't read it, then that's your problem, and not mine. Even if you think it's a different problem, you don't have to be so rude to me. I'm not hijacking the thread, I'm just saying that I think it's a OS issue, and I don't see the point in making another one if I'm going to get a response along the lines of how there's already another thread that's similar.

Because instead of it being about the OP's problem, you've made it an attack on my character, which I consider an attempt to start drama. Thanks Community! I solved the problem. In fact it was not a problem but lack of understanding. These guys at Apple are way ahead in thir thinking. I will try to explain as short as I can.
In Lion, ihe Prefferences/Display show only two choices: 6-7 steps of resolution and some color tab. No two screens, no two display to overlap, nothing for us to do. "That was the problem"! Everything is automatic.
When I connected the HDMI cable to the Miniport into a T-bolt slot, the TV screen showed the "spiral galaxy" how Zyriab is calling it. In fact he gave me the best clue. That shows the connection is good. But where is the Mac Book image?
You have to drag it to the right out of the Mac Book display area, and "voila!" it will continue on the TV screen. The same with the mouse pointer, push it out ofthe Mac Book display area and you see it on the TV sreen. Good image, you can keep the max resolution, etc. The sound is still on the Book's speakers. I have to figure that out.
Thank everybody, especialy Zyriab, ne was the closest.
    High regards to everybody

I have lightroom 5.7. Now I have apple TV to connect my Mac to the TV scree. I wish to do a slide show on the TV. However, on the Mac, using ITunes to share photos with the TV, I cannot locate all photo files. What is the best way to save the slide show and put it where the Mac sharing can find it? So far, I made on one folder in Lightroom, put some photos there and I found them easily. Can this be done with a slide show? Please help quickly! Also worried that the photos I put on the new folder are hard to find afterwards, when the show is done. Where do they go when I delete from from the new folder?I am not alone

Not that I'm aware of. You just export JPEG copies to a folder that you can point iTunes to. For instance, I have created a folder in my Pictures folder called Apple TV. And within that folder I have other folders of pictures that I can choose from in iTunes to share with Apple TV. But there doesn't seem to be any way to share a Lightroom slideshow. If you have laid to create a video file that would probably work. Apple TV is a little clunky in my opinion. Some things are a little more difficult to do now than they were a while back. I probably haven't provided you with much help, but just keep experimenting and I think you will figure it out.

  • What are the best sequence presets and settings to use in FCE for the best resolution with the least amount on strain on computer?

    Hello!
Can someone please help me figure out the best settings to use in order to obtain the best resolution in FCE4 for a television show that is going to be sent out on full size Sony DVcam tapes, with 4:3 aspect ration and audio output at 48kHz? I am currently working with mixed media sources in Final Cut Express, and I am wondering what the best settings (presets and preferences) are, in order to provide the HIGHEST resolution possible, while putting the least amount of strain on my computer system?
I am importing mini DV-standard definition footage and still photos (from Canon Rebel camera, HD CMOS Canon camcorder that records in 1440x1080 at 48 kHz, and cell phone photos). For voiceovers I use the tools in FCE.
I use Voltaic (which I use thanks to recommendations from Apple discussion boards, love it!)  to convert the footage from the HD CMOS-Canon HD VIXIA (HG 20) camera, and then I am using print to video to output onto Sony DVcam tapes (full size). This is for delivery for a television network that broadcasts in Standard Definition, so I need to produce the highest resolution and best quality possible that also puts the least amount of stress on my computer system.
If anyone has any recommendations, help, or sources that can help me answer this question I would be greatly appreciative.
    Thank you!
    Susan Kayne

This is happening because your video clip properties do not match your sequence settings.  This is always a problem when you try to insert video from multiple camcorders/cameras (that use different video codecs, frame sizes & rates) in a single sequence.
It will help a lot if you provide more specifics - what FCE easy setup did you use to create your sequence?  For your DV footage, are you using standard 4:3 DV or anamorphic 16:9 DV clips?
If you plan to export to standard def (DV/DVCAM) and are mixing DV from a miniDV camcorder, stills, cell phone images and AVCHD then I would suggest that you use the DV NTSC easy setup for your sequence.  Use MPEG Streamclip or similar utility to convert your non-DV video (your AVCHD video) to QuickTime/Apple DV-DVCPRO NTSC.   Then all your video will match your sequence settings.  Yes, you will have to crop the AVCHD footage to 4:3 and you can do that in MPEG Streamclip.

  • I just connected my Mac Mini running OS 10.6.8 to a IG 32' monitor. What resolution should I select from the menu?

I just connected my wife's Mac Mini running OS 10.6.8 to an IG 32' monitor. What resolution should I select from the menu in order to provide maximum screen appearance? My wife has AMD and a visual acuity of 20/400 with central scotonata.

In System Preferences:Displays you have an option to show
Displays Prefs in the title bar above the screen - where she can
iteratively adjust to her liking. Higher screen resolutions, ironically,
result in smaller characters so adjust to suit. Below, Displays is
    4th from L.

  • What's the best way to connect the audio out of my Mac to my stereo receiver?

I want to listen to my mp3 collection through my home theatre stero receiver.
I have 2 audio interfaces that I connect to my mac through USB and Firewire: Digi Design Mbox mini and Maudio ProFire 610.
I've tried going from a headphone 1/8'' connector from the headphone out of my mac to rca connected to the aux (or whatever) of my stereo.
I've tried using a 1/4'' adapter on the 1/8'' to go from my mbox mini's headphone output to the rca aux on my stereo.
The problem is I'm hearing distortions that sound like clipping, or static, crunchiness on certain frequencies in a lot of my mp3's that shouldn't be there.
I listen to lots of music, and a lot of it uses distortion, like shoegaze, drone etc but I know what I'm hearing is unnatural.
I even hear these flaws when I listen to headphones through the headphone out of my mbox.
Page 2 on this instruction manual says I should be able to go from the monitor outs to my stereo. The monitor outs are 1/4 inch out so I figured I would need a 1/4 inch to rca cable.
I got this one from monster thinking it should work. No dice.
So my question is, what is the best way to connect my mac to my stereo? I need to avoid these distortions and flaws in the audio i'm hearing or I will go nuts.
Why might I be getting these clipping distoritons?
    any advice would be fantastic

It depends on how close the receiver is to the iMac. If it's just a few feet away you need at cable like:
    http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-THINTOSMIN6-Toslink-Digital-Optical/dp/B00016 W6Y6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1316096392&sr=8-2
However if the receiver is across the room or the house you would be best to enable Air Play, this enables you to wirelessly connect the receiver to the iMac. You will need the above cable and an Airport Express. If you are not familiar with Air Play navigate to:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/airplay/
I have been using it for quite some time and find it great. If you are not familiar with the Airport Express here is the link to it:
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
You can even find refurbished ones on Apples website for about $79.

  • What Is The Best Way To Connect Ipod To Stereo Reciever With High Quality?

I recently purchased an 80 gig and am a newbie. I ripped all my music at around 280kbps to retain good audio quality when playing in my car and home theatre system. There are tons of accesories out there (docks, jacks, etc) which is the highest quality to connect my Yamaha receiver. I would think a connection to the bottom of my ipod would be of a higher quality rather than using the headphone jack. Any suggestions would be great. I was thinking about using the monster itv link but mostly for audio. thanks

OK - So now that you have all completely ignored the original question - in hopes of proving your manly-hood....
Does anyone have an answer to the original question....
"What is the best way to connect to a high end home stereo to retain the best sound?"
For sure any connection going through the headphone jack will be a big step back - enough so that you would easily hear a sound quality loss in doing so.
For the few of you who would like to argue/bicker/rant on the nominal sound quality loss....keep on doing so, but for those who actually have some respectable advice we would love to hear it.
For the record, I tend to hear just outside the normal human auditory range...
To help myself put it to rest already... a few years back I decided to conduct my own little listening test.
I took 6 different common ripping modalities (from lossless - to - 128kbps in both MP3 & AAC.... then transfered all of them in order to a blank. Used the same song for each - the song chosen opened with a few clean crisp bars of high freq. music, followed by an instant explosion/drop into a tight & low bassline.
The final cutoff that was achieved before I was unable to detect an audible difference was 198 VBR AAC. Having convinced myself that there was the ever sooooooo slight difference b/t 198 & 256, I went with my current ripping status of 256.... Just incase my audible range should become finally honed with age (yeah, like that is really going to happen) !
This test was run over a Yamaha DSP receiver, running at a constant 110w per channel (w/a max of 220w). The speaker setup was a full surround set of Klipsch Reference Series..... each speaker housing 2 x 6.5 woofer (each housing 2 x 1" Titanium tweeters) And sitting along side the 5 surrounds was/is a 150w continuous 12in. Subwoofer.
Now I am hardly stating that I have hearing as good as some of you extremely technically profound music enthusiasts out there, but for the majority of people making comments about sound quality, and lack there of - when played over a $120/40w Audiovox radio.... I'm sorry, but I would have to side on that of......"Hogwash, that you can hear a difference!"
So.... if possible would someone please offer some advice on a dock or cable connection that will allow us to enjoy the music we ripped at whatever
    so-called range we did!
For those interested in seeing who could hit the further bullseye with their eyes closed, You win!!! Now can you help us?

  • Database connection and what is the best method

Hi - I am new at this, so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
looking at a project costing form where specific users need to complete a form with some prepopulated data expense data
The data is in a local Access database at the moment, with plans on moving it to a web sql tables.
    Overview
I would like to be able to open a main form, select various criteria
    (ie select Project Number)
push button to load data the specific project data
push button to extend reader functionality and save as with a new name based on project number
After review, push button to send PDF to user by email (email address is in the loaded data).
User is able to save data locally on his PC (save capability with the extended reader functions)
When user finished, he can send pdf back to me for data upload to the database
    Question 1:
I am looking at the ODBC connection strings and javascript to do this.
Is this possible? If so, what is the best way to do this?
    Question 2:
Once the "extend features" has been used, can javascripts be used to load different data or extended the Reader functions can only be done after the data is loaded?
Any help or assistance as to where to look would be greatly appreciated.

As long as your database provides an ODBC driver then it can be used to access the DB. Please see my answers below for the rest of your queries.
    Paul
I would like to be able to open a main form, select various criteria (ie select Project Number) push button to load data the specific project data
<answer> This is doable. There are samples published but note that it will involve some javascript coding to accomplish
push button to extend reader functionality and save as with a new name based on project number
<answer> This woudl have to be done through Acrobat and woudl involve some manual intervention. Do you intend on sending the form with the data connection information to them? I woudl recommend that a separate form be used for this. The data connection may cause problems for them when they open the form (remember that they will not have access to the DB).
After review, push button to send PDF to user by email (email address is in the loaded data).
    <answer> not an issue
User is able to save data locally on his PC (save capability with the extended reader functions)
When user finished, he can send pdf back to me for data upload to the database
<answer> The form that they have will not be able to do DB connections so I woudl send back just the data. Then you can import it into your version of the form (that does DB connections) and you can do the update from that.
    Question 1:
I am looking at the ODBC connection strings and javascript to do this.
Is this possible? If so, what is the best way to do this?
<comment> I just did a presentation on this topic .....here is the playback recording. It also has samples that show how to do it.
    http://adobechats.adobe.acrobat.com/p69655795/
    Question 2:
Once the "extend features" has been used, can javascripts be used to load different data or extended the Reader functions can only be done after the data is loaded?
<commment> The RE functionality in Reader will only allow them to save the PDF locally. I do not know how big this project is but if this is only for a few users, then I woudl buy Acrobat for your people (this gives them the ability to do the DB connection as well as RE to allow for the Customer to save the form locally). If this is a large project I woudl go down the LiveCycle Server path and woudl pre-populate the forms on the server. Note that this would be at least a 100K solution whereas the Acrobat woudl be the price of Acrobat times the number of users that you have.
    Make sense?
