What resolution to use

I wrote an application for outdoors gas measurements and I can't decide what resolution to use. I originally wrote it in 1400x1050 and I assumed that by checking the "Maintain proportions of window for different monitor resolutions" box it would go to full screen with no problems in case you are using a lower resolution monitor. But as I read in the forums and found out myself there are certain problems with that and when I try it out my front panel is a mess with controls overlapping each other (I guess there is no such thing as half a pixel).
Is it a valid solution to go for the lowest resolution possible? In my case that would be 1024x768 since I have a good number of controls and 800x600 is too small. Is the 1240x1024 more popular? Also should I check the "Maintain proportions of window for different monitor resolutions" box in order to resize for better resolutions or should I play it safe and just have the front panel appear at the top left corner?
Thank you.

The front panel scaling functions does not always work 100%. I had the some problem with an application once. The customer was not very happy with the scaling functions. So I wrote 4 separate applications for the screen resolutions the customer planed to use, and included all on an install cd. For me this was the simplest and quickest solution. Only minor changes on the front panel was needed in each case, and the customer was also very happy. Remember also to take the Labview font scaling problem into consideration. You can read more about it here

  • What Resolution to use from Istock for Youtube?

I'm trying to make my first movie which will be uploaded to Youtube. I will shoot my video in 1080. I am assuming (not always smart) that I should use the standard 4:30 aspect ratio. I want to use include some stock video footage...probably from istock. I have four options with increasing file sizes and costs. Small Web 320X180; big Web 640X360, HD720 1280X720 or HD1080 1920X1080. For use on YouTube does it make a difference? I have no clue what I should use, but obviously I would not buy the largest and most expensive. The video will basically be B-roll and I will do a voice over. Thanks for any assistance.

This is the iOS forum, so for iPads and iPhones.
    iPad2 & iPhone4s can edit in 1080,
iPhone 4 and iPod Touch can only edit in 720.
There is no 4:30 ration that I have heard of.
All HD formats are 16:9 ratio; thought there is a some odd or letter boxed cinema sizes.
There is no 4:3 HD format.
4:3 was a standard for early SD television, but is not an HD standard or even a format sorry.
You tube can accept various frame sizes.
You should start by thinking what size you want to deliver, and edit up to that frame size.
Stock footage should be up to that size too.
I'm wondering why you want to put B-roll on you tube? And why is there stock footage in your B-roll?
If you want answers specifically for iMovie for Mac you should as Apple to move this question to the mac forum.

  • What is the proper resolution to use with bootcamp and Windows 7 on a Macbook Pro Retina?

    Hi All,
Let me start by saying I have read numerous articles and blog posts about choosing the correct resolution to use when running Windows 7 via Bootcamp on a MacBook Pro Retina (15").  I have not found the "silver bullet" (correct resolution).  My eyes are sensitive to displays that are running in non-native resolutions (scaling).
When running the display in native resolution  (2880x1800) everything looks great, except that icons and text are way too small to read.  I have played with the zoom settings (150%, etc.).
When using any scaled resolutions, the display doesn't look as crisp and I get eye fatigue.  I have also tried Windows 8, with the same results (no surprise).
I would love to use this Macbook to run Windows 7 because the hardware is great, but it looks like I may have to switch back to Dell/Lenovo/HP.
Is there a proper or "best practice" resolution to run at in this scenario?  I want to give it one last try before putting the laptop away...
    Thanks for any help!
    Andrew

While I've never seen retina display, if you have not tried Hi-Contrast in Windows, you might find settings with it that are comforatable.
This is set with desktop rightclick->Personalize. You can vary desktop icon size in the View option above Personalize.
You can change most of what you see in Windows foreground/background colours & text with high contrast settings.
Also, text size in Windows browsers is variable with the Control an + and - key combo.
If the display you use is small maybe an external 24" or 27" monitor, if possible, would alleviate problem.
The attached pics are expadable by double click.

  • Hey I want to know what resolution a personas 3000x 200x is because I am trying to make one, but the middle part of the picure is movin to the left so some thing is wrong with resolution and interpolation. PS, I use Gimp.

I use Debian and Gimp program to make my own personas but it seem like I have to know what resolution or interpolation is needed for the best result. I am trying to make one in size of 3000px wide x 200px high but don't know what resolution and interpolation is matching the requirements of Firefox or personas. For ex: in Gimp when scaling an image the interpolation possibilities are 4 like:
    None
    Linear
    Cubic
    Sync

    Try the Personas forum.

  • Anybody know what resolution and KBPS quality apple use in their SD movies?

I want to digitize some of my movies into the MP4 format so I can watch it on my apple tv.
this is mostly children tv (thomas tank engine and so on). problem with dvd's is that we need to change often and they get worn. children do change their mind very often.
so, a digitized version in my Apple tv would be nice.
    I Use DVD FAB 5.
but when it comes to the kbps setting what should I choose?
I think that I can use the same setting as Apple them self. I bought walle movie and that was 1.1 GB and had very nice look.
anybody know what resolution and KBPS quality apple use in their SD movies?

anybody know what resolution and KBPS quality apple use in their SD movies?
They are generally encoded at 1500 Kbps for video and 128 Kbps for audio and a resolution of 640 x 480 depending on the aspect ratio.
The ToU of this forum forbid discussion about circumventing copy protection, so I'm not willing to comment on the rest of your question.

  • What resolution should I use?

I'm trying to creat a special graphic image to upload onto iWeb, but t always is A LOT smaller once loaded onto iWeb, what resolution should I use to create the image initially? I've ried 72 dpi but it still came out tiny.
    Thanls

    ThanX Kevin;
That's the core of the issue I'd also had with taking those suggestions into PhotoShop and then back to iWeb. Tu whit..:
In instances of some larger graphics, I've found a conundrum of going from one to the other not reproducing the image as the same size. I can paste back into iWeb something just copied from PhotoShop, and it'll be a third the original. How to deal with that.?
When I tried to increase my 'canvas size' and then blow up the graphic, I'm told that the "Clipboard export failed because it is too big to export."..? Yeah, it's a whole page graphic that I'd blown up almost 3x so that it's import into iWeb would be close to the original (out of iWeb).
So I tried various test graphics to see which yielded what. It would seem for my CS2 and iWeb1.1.2, there's some upper threshold, beyond which iWeb will only accept/display it around 300 pxs.
What's wrong with that picture.? How come I seem to be forced away from the recommendation not to resize in iWeb.? Or is there some secret combination to getting large (almost full page) images into iWeb without have to adjust them.?
Also I'd found what seems an anomaly with the idea of file size increase with iWeb adjustment. I checked my locally published files for pages I'd tried to use an image for background. The png size is declared by the finder to be 36K; but the original, a jpg, is listed as 76k. This seems the inverse of what I'd understood to have been recommended; particularly so for me when I'd set iWeb up to manipulate this image to fit the page by selecting "stretch". What's wrong with my understanding here.?
and so; what IS the definitive best way to get large size graphics into iWeb as small size files..?

  • What is the best filetype and resolution to use for flash, using a 1920x1080 stage.

    Hi all,
Hope this isn't a dumb question, but what is the best file type and resolution to use for a Flash stage setup of 1920x1080 and 1024x768?
Lately my images have been looking pixelated. There OK when I test the movie in Flash, and the SWF looks OK, but the HTML looks really pixelated.
    Many thanks to all.
    JR

is your page scaling (ie, 100% x 100%)?
if not, there should not be any problem.
if yes, then you usually want your bitmaps to be as large as the largest screen you want to use and NOT have them appear pixelated.
or, use vector graphics so they size without pixelation.

  • My screen is only show half of the application what resolution should i use

My screen is only showing half of the application, what resolutions should I use.
    MacBook Air. December 2010

It depends on which model you have:
    13" - 1440x900
    11" - 1366x768
This of course assumes you are talking about your internal display.

  • Kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?

kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?
Or What Cameras are available for Macs ?
This question used to come up for Macs that did not have Internal Cameras and the User did not have an External iSight.
Since the advent of Intel Mac and the Internal iSight and OS 10.4.9 (late Tiger) the question has broadened from "What can I use with iChat ?" to "What cameras can I use with My Mac ?" and from there into the current Question this User Tip plans to answer.
On the whole it is a case of matching a camera for the type of application you are going to use it most with.
A web cam can be used in iMovie to create Email or Video Blogs although Camcorders do a better job. Camcorders can be used as web cams.
    Camera Types
These fall into three main categories that themselves have subsets.
Your choice is going to be influenced by the Applications you want to use it with.
    1) Firewire Cameras (Plug an Play)
    a) The iSight (External) made by Apple and several other similar cameras have mostly disappeared off the market. (Although iSights seem to be still doing well on Ebay - See Version and Mounts).
    b) Firewire Camcorders. These vary as to which apps that work with dues to the different Signal outputs they can do.
Apple Article TA26556 Highlights some that have issues due to their proprietary DV Format.
    2) USB 1.1 able Cameras. (Not Plug and Play)
This includes most cameras pre Vista (more on that later)
Most of these will need a suitable Mac Driver either from the Manufacturer or from one of two Generic sources (macam and IOXeperts). Some manufacturers will include a Mac Driver on the CD that comes with the camera some will supply it as a download from their Site.
It is worth while saying at this point that iChat will also need this reasonably cheap iUSBCam Utility as well.
This Utility was originally designed for getting the External iSight to work on computers less than the G3/600Mghz spec for iChat. Then it included the ability to get USB cameras to work with iChat.
You will need one of these three options listed so far if you are OS 10.4.8 or below or have only USB 1.1 ports/sockets on your Mac.
    3) USB 2.0 Cameras. (Plug and Play in most cases)
    a) Those that are UVC (USB Video Class) Compliant (Also listed as Vista Certified)
Apple added a UVC driver to the OS at 10.4.9 but your Mac also has to have an USB 2.0 port that you can plug such a camera into (Some keyboard ports are not USB 2.0). This means that the camera is Plug and Play although it may not have all the features it has on a PC
    b) Those that are USB 2.0 but are not Vista Certified/UVC compliant. (You are going to need Mac Drivers again)
This site about Apple Compatible cameras may be of some help.
A Note on quality of Pictures.
Firewire cameras of either sort are best with Camcorders being the best of all. (Generally more pixels delivered faster to your Computer)
The Newer USB 2.0 cameras are tending to exceed the 640 X 480 pixels that earlier USB1.1 cameras use with some currently giving 1.3Mp resolutions. It should be noted though that not all applications will use this format.
Look closely at the maximum Frame rate (fps) a camera can produce. You may not get it is every applications but something that starts with a max of 15fps is going to give you no leeway.

Versions and Mounts Which Version Am I Buying ?
First off I will not say so much on Buying a second hand External iSight other than making sure you use a reputable Selling site or an Individual Seller so that you have recourse if the device turns out to be faulty. Try and get to see the camera working if you can, preferably seeing it plugged in and working or by iChat and seeing the Pic it produces (Get the person to show you live Screen shots (or Screen Share in Leopard/iChat 4) of System Preferences > Sound > Input as the iSight will be listed)
What I will list here is info about the different versions.
There were three versions before the External iSight was discontinued. There is little outward differences as the main change is the mounts that are included with each version. They all function the same way.
The versions are distinguished by letters (Revision A, B or C) in addition to the base part number and an added slash (M8817LL/).The Last model included different mounts for Laptops, Desktop Stand, Magnetic mount and one for a Flat Panel iMac (the Lampshade one). See pictures in this PDF on page 6.
Apple no Longer sell the External iSight or the Apple M9314G/B iSight Accessory Kit either but you may find it at other places as well if the mount you want/need does not come with the camera. Pics of Box and Contents
It appears that individual iSight mounts and other items can be purchased though this iSight Service FAQ page
Remember the youngest External iSight is likely to be at least 4 years old. Current anecdotal information suggests the cost of an Apple Repair to a faulty External iSight exceeds the cost of a USB Replacement (Or the value in real terms, of the camera itself - although higher prices seem to be quoted on Ebay and Amazon)

I will review further an correct myself.
The last reads the way I meant as in physically getting to see it.
I am not sure you are reading it the same way.
As a consequence your suggestion seems a bit ambiguous to my mind.
Thanks for the input. I will read a digest context a bit more and see if I can rephrase.
